We learned about witch trails and my history teacher told us a method used to determine whether a woman was a witch was to tie her/him's ankles down with weights, throw them into water and if they somehow survived they must have used their powers then they would be hung or brunt at the stake. So it was either drown or survive to die.

Yup. This started in Europe and was based off a book by King James VI of Scotland called "Daemonologie." He had a theory that if a person was a witch you could find out by doing what you said, tying them up and throwing them in water, and if they began to sink that meant they accepted the waters of baptism (not a witch) but if they floated that meant they rejected the waters of baptism (they are a witch). But apparently he didn't mean for people to actually start killing people suspected of witchcraft, he was trying to make a point that we should use evidence before we convict someone. James actually dismissed many people that came to him with accusations of others being witches because he could straight up tell they were lying/there was no evidence to support their claims.

weird fact my history teacher told me about mouldy bread ~ apparently when the black plague was killing and making everyone sick around Europe, the only town that had no one sick was a little town in Germany and the only reason they think now is because they were so poor they all ate mouldy bread and mould contains penicillin. ok just wanted to get that out there bye.

if you ever have the opportunity to go to Salem, I would highly recommend it. I went there a few years ago and I found it so interesting. they have lots of guided tours (some even at night) that go really into detail about what happened and the people involved. it has a stone road and lots of cool shops around it. if you do go to Salem, I definitely recommend going to Turners because I still dream about their mac and cheese

Just over 10 years ago I made my acting debut in "The Crucible", portraying Judge Hathorne. Out of the actual 7 Salem Judges, Hathorne was the ONLY one who never recanted for what he did. Even Judge Danforth (the Deputy Governor at the time) recanted!) But Hathorne went to his grave some 25 years later...still thinking he had done the right thing. To show you the after effects: The very name "Hathorne" was so despised in that region that his great grandson...Nathaniel...added a "w" to his name in order to distance himself from the Judge. His new name: Nathaniel Hawthorne!!! (...and NOW you know...the REST of the story!) In any event, some legislation came about shortly after these trials. At the time, courts were allowed to accept "spectral" evidence. The legislature outlawed that practice...thankfully. When the US Constitution was adopted, numerous Amendments were proposed as a result of those trials! For example the Fifth Amendment...providing that you cannot be forced to testify against yourself. The right to legal counsel in any criminal accusation is now part of our highest laws. The right to examine the evidence against you. Also...and very important...the right to be considered INNOCENT until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. One other thing: You mentioned the Catholic Church. However, in the play "The Crucible", we hear the line from Judge Danforth..."The government and the 'central church demand to know...' clearly referring to a protestant church. Catholics did not come to the New World until long after the new nation came into being! It was in the late 1800s when Catholics were streaming into Ellis Island in vast numbers, seeking a chance to live "The American Dream". But in 1692, there were virtually no Catholics at all in New England! (And yes, there were...obviously...Catholics here before then, but in the 1600s they were few and far between. If I seem to know a bit about Hathorne, it's because I researched the actual judge in order to find out what sort of man I was being asked to portray. From all the evidence, I found him to be a real jerk! lol

I took an early North American literature class and we went through documentation from the Salem witch trials. My professor talked about a theory that states that the girls ate the mold and had hallucinations, but it only went as far as it did because of power. If you research the women you'll find a lot of them were widows and owned land. These women had influence and people made up this "witch" trial to get rid of them. Also, the men who died were the ones who tried to stop it. I definitely believe it was a mix of mold and conspiracy against the influential women of the town.
@carolinepisarchuk6319
@carolinepisarchuk6319 7 жыл бұрын
Not just a conspiracy towards powerful women, but spawned from younger girls, who because of the puritan way of life were not allowed to play or have normal childhoods, so these accusers were essentially having fun and getting attention from this. Many apologized and admitted to lying or "being influenced by the devil" years after the trials were over.

Giles Corey was a hero. I don’t believe mold had anything to do with it.Liars,thieves and murderers still being given a pass when the simple truth is it was a targeted land and wealth grab against those who couldn’t fight back.

Go Fake Yourself when I was 4 in kindergarten the teacher passed out a coloring sheet as she handed it to me I saw it was a pilgrim lady and pulled my hand back and it dropped to the floor. I responded they were evil liars. I had a heavy wooden door put on me and churchmen placed stones on it till I couldn’t see or breathe for two days, they laughed the whole time. Since I was 4 living in Louisiana never knowing of Salem, Giles Corey, witch trials or anything related, this was an odd feeling thru the years. As a teenager I learned in school about the witch trials and immediately knew. The preacher started it to be relevant and gain property with the townsmen. I visited the place last year for the first time at 53 years old, I took a pic of his name on the walk path and in the photo is an very old boot next to my feet... I was alone and nobody was standing next to me! ... so I thought😳 I’ve joked about being him reincarnated, but in reality it could just be a weird coincidence. Anywho, take care

there hasn't ever been a human outbreak of ergot, it really only happens in animals. I was just in Salem a few weeks ago and i met this historian, i guess there was a research psychology paper done a few years back that basically determined it a mass hysteria crisis. also because of the length of witch trials it was impossible for ergot to even break out and last for all that time.
@88lakeshore
@88lakeshore 7 жыл бұрын
also one of these affects of ergot is that your limbs turn black and fall off and there was never any record of that happening so it couldn't possibly be ergot for that reason as well

If anyone is really interested in the Salem Witch Trials, I would recommend watching The Crucible (Winona Rider is in it, she plays Abigail). It such a good movie and it’s also a play. AND THEY HUNG TWO DOGS ALONG WITH THE 20 PEOPLE.

Wicca started in the 50s in England... paganism, as a whole, has been around for a very very long time. Witches Can be pagan, not all pagans are witches.. wiccans can be witches, but not all witches are wiccan.. wiccans are pagans, but not all pagans are wiccans. You have to be initiated into Wicca to be a wiccan.. can't just call yourself a wiccan. I am a witch, but I am not a pagan. I don't believe in the 3 fold 10 fold bs. Nor do I do the karma.. You might be from a long line of witches, but a long line of wiccans, true initiated wiccans, is highly unlikely.

Amber Silva there are a ton of rules in Wicca. Not sure how you can practice as you see fit. I do apologize about saying bs. It was rude and uncalled for. If you're practicing as you see fit, are you sure you're Wiccan? And not eclectic? There are many many paths in the pagan religion. Not just Wicca. Lots and lots of beautiful ways of practice

I actually just went to Salem a couple weeks ago and it was so eerie. You can go into old houses that people lived in at the time, and there's a huge graveyard and memorials for all the victims... It's of course turned into a sort of tourist attraction but it's so interesting to be in the same place that such a tragic event happened hundreds of years ago.

I had always been fascinated with the witch trials when learning of them in school. My sister as well and we always wanted to go to Mass during Halloween time and this past Halloween (2018) we finally were able to visit Salem and it was such an amazing experience! We did a mock trial and the people in the trial were able to try the “witch” or not. And they just had so many cool things to do and learn about! And then at night the kiddos and people came out and enjoyed trick or treating. It was hands down one of the best (& most crowded) experiences ever! Highly recommended!

My great great great great great great grandma was accused of being a witch and they hung her... I also read a book that was called "the witch of the black pond" and it was kind of the same, everyone accused her of being a witch because she could swim and the only other person who could swim was a boy who was a sailor and the girl had a friend who was also accused of being a witch because she was not a puritan. And the main girl did not die in the end but we never finished the book because of coronavirus. I'm sorry in the beginning I made it sound like the book was about my grandmother but it was about a girl named kit and her friend hannah

Since I’m reading this book in class, I love this book!😤☺️💛💛 apparently there’s this theory of why “the afflicted children” were being “bewitched” because a recent test years ago, (2014?) they tested the soil where they grew crops, where it used to be Salem Village, there were micro bugs or something like that, that made the children(girls) having these affects.

I remember watching a video that talks about the modern stuff that would make you be seen as a witch during the Salem Witch Trials. To sum it up, 'a living woman'. That's it. Lol. I've heard of this one test they did where they would tie the 'witch' to a chair tethered to a rock and dump them in a lake. If they live, then they're a witch, if not, then no. Sooo...what if the person was able to get free (like untie or cut themselves free).

I live in Maine, not far from Mass, and last year a friend of mine and I went and spent a weekend in Salem during the fall, the beginning of October. There is no experience like it! We took a night walking tour through Salem learning the scary history, taking pictures, etc, etc. I had forgotten all about Gallows Hill until now. During our tour we were told that is one of the most haunted places in/near Salem and were told of many stories. Soooo.... after the tour my friend and I drove up to Gallows Hill. We didn't see anything but we both were just overcome with a strange, uncomfortable feeling. We parked on top of the hill for probably half an hour and just felt creeped out the entire time. I highly recommend taking a trip to Salem during the fall. I bet you and Josh would love it!! The shops in the heart of Salem are amazing, the people and activities that we met along the way were great. I cannot wait to go again! Definitely an experience worth every penny.
