This is such solid information. The biggest issue for me was getting off of my ego and into the idea of scoring. Last round I put my driver away for most of the round. Kept the ball in play. 88, which for me is really good.

3 putts kill. You can execute all the great advice Matt dispenses, have great ball striking, yet your score will remain stagnant and/or you'll give your opponent (who does none of those) way too many chances to tie or win. Guilty. No 3 putts.

Really like the vibe of this channel. Solid, practical advice that you can easily apply to your game. You don’t have to overthink 1000 different elements of swing and stance and shaft angle to start dropping shots. I played my first ever 18 holes yesterday and shot 114 (very bad but better than I expected) and thanks to your advice I was able to recognise where I went wrong with my course management and lost unnecessary shots - off the tee box and on the greens mainly. Will continue using the advice in your vids and I’m confident I can get under 100 soon

Nice playa For you, your main focus must be Driving the ball IN PLAY - that's all. Doesn't have to be long, doesn't have to be SMASHED just IN PLAY Then you have to work on getting it on the green when you're around the green and preventeing 3 putts...work on getting the speed right on your putts taking note of the uphill and downhill slope on a green But most important is the long game for you now, to learn how to hit a golf ball better

Great content as usual, Matt. I saw the results of a robot test recently, which showed a driver actually hits shorter than a 3-wood for club speeds below 90 mph, even with a perfect strike. My speed is 88 mph, so I gain absolutely nothing from a driver. I hit a 1” shortened 3-wood straight nearly every time, 190-210 yards depending on contact. I don’t carry a driver.

Off the 1st tee yesterday hit 5 iron, as I was still kinda stiff, and it ended in the fairway a decent distance for an old codger...missed a 5 footer and made bogey, but compared to the frequent sixes, sevens, and rare eights an easy 5 put me in a positive frame of mind that carried for several more holes to start the day...shot my best 18 in a month or two...what a head game...!!

I've always wondered though, the average tee shot likely includes artifacts of forced layups due to doglegs, etc. Every good golfer I've played with under age 50, tends to hit it further than 240-260. I'd love to play a few rounds and place my ball in the fairway 240 every time from the tee and see what happens.

Then this morning was tempted by the dark side, watching a n other KZbinr who was suggesting to go from 13 to single figures I need to add 29 yards to my 230 average. Thoughts of driver experimenting came into my mind before thankfully I watched your video directly afterwards.

Check it out here golf.com/instruction/approach-shots/key-lowering-handicap-stats-golftec/ you do not need any more than 230 off the tee bother. Add 29 yards! @@GolfSidekick to be fair it was 20 , the 29 was my typo! His exact words were you need to add 20 yards if you can. Not fair to broadcast who because at times he speaks some sense. But your video was spot on and the examples hit home. I think it’s a reality of golf that as we look to improve sometimes it’s easy to snatch at a holy grail. Rest assured this subscriber is not going to deviate - the mini driver stays and you even influenced my 6 hybrid purchase! Though now I’m hitting everything better it fits between my 6 iron and 5 hybrid like a dream. Thanks again

Oh right I know the video from jon perkins He doesn't reference the starting distance you're hitting the ball though so it is misleading because it's using the averages of a 16 handicap driving distance vs the averages of a 9 handicap. Strange Dangerous using averages without standard deviations or mentioning the absolute numbers but 'more distance=lower scores' is the latest sexy marketing of current times.

where did you get that chart? I don't understand why the longer the hole the longer you need to hit it to keep up with your handicap. As a back of the envelope calculation using the scratch yardage rating (normalized by 18) rating = length/220 + 2.25 could be used to represent average score of scratch vs length. 440 yard hole would average 4.25 where a 330 would average 3.75. (of course this doesn't take into account difficulty etc but just a rough number for the effect of length). What is it about the longer of the hole that it would be assumed that the scratch golfer would gain some super powers that they don't possess on the shorter holes? Or is the super power in the brain and we are assuming here that the shorter holes on averaged are designed to be more narrow on average so that the typical scratch golfer would be more expected to lay back on their tee shot (ie. the effective length of the holes are longer)?

Do you want a club to get in play on every hole? Get a Cobra One length hybrid. It's a game changer.

Couldn't agree more! I have a 3 and 4 one length hybrid Cobras. Finally left driver in the bag last week and was teeing it up with the 3 and hitting it farther than the driver and in play! It is very satisfying golf for my abilities.

@@GolfSidekick Absolutely. And btw, my gf asked me Sunday evening if I was gonna work on my new flop shot I’d told her about. I said sorry, Matt and I discussed it, and we’re just gonna work harder toward not getting short sided, lol.

@@BrandonSpears-s3u Playa do me a favor, go do 1 hour short greenside bunker splash practice. Get that ball high and soft on 10-15 yard shots. You'll discover the flop shot from that - it's the same shot. But bunker is low hanging valuable fruit that teaches you the flopper by association
