Hi Richard. My sincerest congratulations!!🥳 The Australian summer is about to start and at 24 currently I want to put in a huge effort to get to 19.9 or lower. What did you find was the 20% of things that made 80% of the difference? What are you doing/not doing now that you previously weren’t doing/doing? Would really appreciate your insights! Thanks in advance.

@@willemflach9834 what really helped the most was changing the mind set, accepting bad shots and moving on immediately, being able to take my medicine and not go for the hero shot and finally playing bogey golf and accepting pars would come and doubles would happen. Along with the mindset change I stopped over swinging and only swung 80% for much better control and consistency, luckily power has ever been a weak point but now I have power and control 22 degree hybrid from the tee and I get a consistent 200 meters(220 yards) straight or a small left to right shape (spread of about 10 meters) so I know when I tee up left side I will be left to middle..... Two things I wasn't doing that I am now is reading the lies and I put 90% of practice is putting especially distance control and chipping / pitching, I never used to read my chips as putts, now I do, my short game if taken from 150 in plays more like a 8-10 handicap so I am looking next year at two things getting under 15 handicap and adding a 5 Wood to my bag and maybe a 3 wood

Great video Matty boom-boom. Last month I was invited to play with hickory golf clubs, first time I have tried these. Driver was about 13° of loft, a 3-iron, a 7-iron, a 9-iron and a SW. Played forward tees at 6300 yards, Par 72. It was stress free and fun golf. Zero lost balls because the ball was easier to control and never went over 200 yards. Each approach shot was set up for easiest up and downs, no shots taken with the wood off the ground, irons only. Results, 81 stress free and zero double bogeys and zero birdies. Easiest 9 over and most enjoyable I have ever played, I play off 3. Really has taught me that without the hero shots, golf is easy and more enjoyable Playa

I started doing the toe down chipping whenever possible now. I used to only chip w my 60°. I shot 84 for the 3rd time this morning. I have yet to break this number but i played better than any other time today bc i was never in a bad position, i just didnt make any long par saving putts this time. Got myself a birdski too. I took out my 3wood for my 2nd shot on the par 5 to try and make it on in 2, then i heard the chief playa voice say "you are not jack nicholson", and i put it back in the bag and just hit a nice stress free 7wood to my layup 60° distance of 75 yds and put it within 3 feet for the easy bird. WhaddaJediGolfMasta thanks for all you do playa

good advice! My handicap is generally between 14 and 15. I drive just 200-210 (I'm 65). But I had a nice 85 today as I did what you preach (1) no lost balls and (2) just a single bunker (I got greedy and tried to hit a par 5 outside my confidentiality zone). Putted well (31 putts) and frankly didn't even hit the ball that well. But course management is so crucial (along with not getting mad at yourself).

Ty . You put emphasis on course management. I found you better than a week ago. Saturday I went out and hit 9 holes From my first tee shot to my last putt I emphasized course management (for the first time). The game suddenly became easier. It's like what I've been missing. I will never golf again without the mental approach you PRESCRIBED!. My misses became manageable. Discouragement then anger have been my Achilles heel.. Not this time. On average I hit 90 over 18. I was 3 over in 8 holes then I double bogeyed the 9th hole. I was elateted. Every shot I thought-processed and played safe to give me the approach distance for my "free throw". It worked wonders on my mental aspect of my game. Instructors work on mechanics. NOT YOU! A GAME CHANGER!!@

Been off with injury for a few months, tried playing through before taking a break and my scores sky-rocketed, high 80's/90's. Watched this in the morning yesterday (Wednesday 24th) before a 09:00 tee time, first game back after injury. Played the 9/10, zero hero shots, lay-up/safe rather than pin seek, and walked off with a 78, including a double bogey on the last (which hurt) and 2x 3 putts. Easily left 3-4 out there today, but i'll tell you something Matty....most enjoyable round of golf i've played in many months.

Love the video! Brought back what I could do in my teens. Over 50 now, trying to break the 80 mark. I am a shorter knocker than I used to be off the tee with an avg of 200-210…so hybrids or 3 wood into many par 4s. The strategies are great….esp the up and down shots. A must practice constantly and working to get those shots within 5 ft or less. Love your channel.

I'm back for a 2nd watch. This is the perfect video for me. I have been stagnated around the same level for years now. 15ish handicap. Took 3 lessons with a pro since last season and things hadn't been improving much consistently. It was like suddenly things clicked for me and my ball striking and wedge game improved a good bit. In just the past week I dropped 2 strokes off my handicap by posting low scores. 82, a 41 in golf league and another 82. I have good swing speed around 110 with driver but very erratic any given day. One of the biggest things for me is recognizing that the driver isn't working on a day and gearing down. I or 2 bad shots and it needs to go away immediately. One day 3 Wood was the next stop that worked 260 down the middle is a fun place to play from. Another day might need to go down to 4 iron. Whatever you have to do. Give yourself a chance to be around the green in two. Trying to fix driver on course and spraying into the trees is demoralizing, especially when you are trying to shoot a score. Wedge game is crucial. I know you advocate staying out of the 40-80 yard range but I have been money with the wedges. Having that wedge game helps take pressure of when you do get in trouble and have to punch out. Knowing you you can atleast hit the green majority of time and save bogey. I've been sticking some inside 5 feet, so satisfying saving par like that. Drill those 5 ft and under putts as much as you can. That's what can keep a really good round going, or can salvage a day you don't have you best game tee to green and still keep the score respectable. Either way they are crucial. Thats the starting point 5 ft and under putts. Then practice lag putts to get them within 5 ft. Then practice short game shots. Then irons then driver.

I'm a 9 HCP with aspirations of scratch. I thought my short game was okay, until I played with scratch golfers and it's chalk and cheese. Me knocking a half decent strike to 8 feet instead of stiffing it to 3 feet most of the time like they do stuck out like a sore thumb.

Similar story to me - got 86 with 8 pars, 1 birdie (!) but 5 doubles and 1 triple. I feel like the course management isn't too bad, but sometimes I just duff shots and it costs me a stroke and sometimes position. Hitting off sodden winter (NZ) fairways is so much harder than driving range mats. I kinda wish we had more grass driving ranges (or any!?)

First time I came to Thailand I thought I was hot poop. But then I played courses with 90 bunkers and not 30. Water everywhere. Jungle. Snakes. Lost balls. Greens where it mattered where you landed on them or missed them. It taught me how to play golf faster in 2 weeks than the previous 8 years. Straight is where it's at. Some you will convert to the way of the playa but some will cling to their driver like dog shit to a blanket. That's life.

Technique before speed. Very true Boom Boom. Have you ever played this course with just a 9 iron mate? Getting proper good with your 9 iron, yes off the reds is fine, is a really good, quick way to start figuring out golf imo. If nothing else, you learn how far your 9 iron goes, and from there you, can easily work out your other club distancés :) Cheers!

I’m waiting for the “scratch to +5” series Matty. When I figure it out, you’ll be the first I tell. It may be as simple as “make more putts dummy”… 😅

"Going far left is a nipple-licker, it opens up the hole very nicely." (13:44). OMG, I'm dying, had to replay that one several times to make sure it heard him correctly LOL!

I'm going to watch the video, but my thoughts are 1. avoid penalty shots period. Play away from water and OB. 2. bunkers are bad, as is deep grass, but not as bad as water and OB, avoid if possible. 3. Play to the fat part of the fairway and the fat part of the green, don't take chances just to get a couple of yards closer to the green 4. Position your approaches below the pin if the green has a lot of slope 5. Worry more about speed than direction on long putts, you rarely miss the hole by more than a yard left and right, but if you get the speed wrong you can be 10 feet, or more, long or short. 6. Practice short putts of 8 feet and under religiously. 7. Don't try to hit the ball as hard as you can unless you are absolutely certain that you know where it is going to go. Be realistic about what shots you can pull off, and which shots give you trouble, avoid those. 8. Your score is hurt more by your poor shots than it is helped by your great shots. Play a little safer and you will shoot a better score most days than if you take a lot of chances.

When I shot my 4th 59 I didn't do any of this stuff, I just swing 110% driver every hole and hit right at the pin every shot the goal is to hit it in the hole. Period. :) Every comment section needs a villian, yours are too positive.

If only I could keep the ball in play off the tee I’d be GOLDEN. Approach game is pretty solid (40% greens average) chipping is 8/10 for my level, and putting is pretty solid.

Tee off with a hybrid or something else, there are worse things than using an iron instead of a wedge on the second shot, like for example.. hitting out of the woods 😅

Just arrived at 15 (from 17) mostly by improving swing. Oh but do I need Matty BB to remind me on course management. I scored my record round ever last week (like a 10.3 hcp Baus) and almost repeated it 2 days later. But didn't. One use case on that second round: At hole 9 I was tempted and tried something too risky, it was a pretty narrow hole with water all the way along the right. longish par 4. Hit a super 5 wood off the tee, making me think I could get a GIR with the only iron that can fade on me, 6 iron. And yes. Splash. Discipline vs Sensation. Argh. "if you hate boring, you hate scoring" I will tell myself 10 times before going to sleep each night till my next round 😀

Matty boy! I wanna replace my driver and 3 wood in my bag to get consistent off the tee. What clubs do you suggest I hunt on Ebay? Does it matter if its a big brand or not?
@GolfSidekick
@GolfSidekick 5 ай бұрын
Too broad a question. What’s wrong with the current club? Did you get a lesson and a fitting? Do you know now your specs to find a good club on eBay? I don’t suggest hunting for any unless you know your game deeply. I would suggest lessons and a fitting when you hit the ball better. Much less wasted time and efforts and money

I duff & fluff shots a lot. But I am also chipping from uneven surfaces and rough a lot. But I hit much higher green in regulation than people with my handicap. My theory is if I can get above 50% on green in regulation the chipping woes will be less important. I have had rounds above 50% but my average is not above 50% GIR. Most people in high handicaps do waste way too many shots around the green. Probably I could learn something from planning my shots with the goalposts and such a bit better such that I am on the fairway more often when I am chipping and work on my chipping.

This video is for me except my 5 wood is probably the worst club in the bag. My card usually reads a bunch of pars and some 3 or 4s sprinkled in. So maybe I will leave that in the bag next round
