A now-deceased friend, a long-time Ford, CDJR, GM, and Toyota dealer, summed it all up for me a few years ago about how the auto industry changed since he became a car dealer in the 1950's. He said that when he started as a car dealer, the auto companies were manufacturers that provided financing to sell cars; today they are finance companies that manufacture cars to sell financing. You are spot on with your comments on turbocharged gasoline engines. Turbocharged engines are essentially a construct of the EPA fuel economy testing cycle. A small displacement turbocharged gasoline engine will achieve better city fuel economy on the EPA test cycle because of how the EPA test cycle is designed, even though the small displacement turbocharged engine will NOT achieve that economy in normal driving use. Apple to apples, a turbocharged gasoline engine will also have about half of the longevity of a non-turbocharged engine. The used market is starting to recognize this, and that trend will intensify as more high-mileage turbo'ed used vehicles hit the market. Toyota was brilliant when they built high quality hybrid vehicles with normally aspirated gasoline engines, but their foray into turbocharged gasoline engines married to hybrid systems is just asking for trouble.

Not sure what to do for a full size truck anymore as none of the manufacturers are producing anything well built and reasonably priced. Went to test drive a new Tundra last year with our family expanding, not only was the price too much but the fit and finish was no better than the F150 I drove earlier. Couple that with the plague of issues (just visit any tundra group) and I held off thinking maybe another Tacoma. The problem causing governments to dictate these policies is that fossil fuel use is irreparably changing the global climate and we're all liable to be killed due to societal collapse from natural disasters and generally weather becoming too hot in the tropics to survive so there's billions of people trying to migrate towards the poles. The gov'ts have bigger fish to fry. The automakers and Big Oil have known the damage they were causing since the 1960's and chose to prioritize milking their existing business over spending money on real change when they had ample opportunity. They even toyed with EVs in the 90's, consumers loved them, and then they killed them because it was a threat to their profits because the long term service/maintenance costs of EVs are so much lower (recently confirmed by Consumer Reports) which is a significant source of revenue in terms of parts + for dealerships who are their actual customers.

Toyota has always been the brand that sells a understated but better vehicle for slightly lower price than the competition, but with the new Tacoma that humble approach has been abandoned. Now we get a truck that's practically the same size as the old one (although it does share a frame with the full size Tundra) with a smaller displacement engine than the previous generation for a higher price than the previous generation. People would be alright with the smaller engine if Toyota were passing on the savings to customers but the price is going up. The money people are paying for these new Tacoma's is enough for Toyota to give it a mild hybrid V6 and make an absolute beast of a truck while still turning a profit. I am reading the comments and still haven't seen anybody who prefers this new turbo four cylinder setup to the old V6.
@richardoaks35978 ай бұрын
A few reasons why it costs more: 1) More features come standard, for instance, adaptive cruise control ( I could do without all these safety features for a cheaper vehicle) 2) More hardware for the turbo engines, just because it’s a smaller displacement engine doesn’t actually mean that it is less robust. They have added more to the cooling system etc. 3) inflation 4) development costs for new generation I don’t know why everyone is mad at Toyota for adapting to the EPA regulations. Ford, GM, Stellantis, they’re all going turbo. But let’s shit on Toyota because they didn’t offer a V8, and let’s forget to mention that the V8’s offered by ford and GM have cylinder deactivation, dont tell me that’s a better long term solution to turbos.

It’s a no for me now. I think Toyota is going to lose a lot of faithful loyal customers. I had a 2003 4Runner and currently own a 2017 4Runner. My wife has the 2008 Highlander. We have been waiting for the new 4runner, Taco, and GH to release. I might just look for a 2022 V6 Highlander for her and either go with the 2024 4Runner or 2023 Taco until we hear more stuff on these new engine. I want the new tech in the trucks, but not sure about the price or engines.

The smart money is on the Nissan Frontier. 40k'ish gets you a fully loaded model with a V6. It's not as flashy but the Frontier has always been pretty reliable and having less flashy tech means less shit that can break down the road.

I am 54 and just upgraded my 21 4Runner SR-5 Premium to a 24 TRD Pro 4Runner. I also bought a 90 and 93 Celica as well. I am in agreement with you and did a video last week on this. Increasing price and potentially decreasing quality could be disastrous. I’m in for a new Celica if it comes, but I think I can get quite a few years out of the 24. That’s when Toyotas really shine though, long term ownership.

I agree, way to expensive now. Couple that with dealer mark ups and I am outi don't think the company minds losing the sales since pricing is outrageous. If they only lose 10% of sales with 20-30% price bump the net is positive on the balance sheet. You can repair alot of vehicle for the difference in price from the taco to the comps.

Great video with very interesting content ! You are spot on about the wear issues with small turbocharged motors, mechanics in the industry have known this for a long time and consumers are figuring it out also. Toyotas truck pricing is out of control. The Frontier by Nissan is the big winner in the short term leading US sales by a large margin to start 2024. I would not buy a new Toyota truck because of prices and lack of decent engine options. I am now looking at Frontiers and base Ford F-150 4x4 models with the N.A. 5.0 engine. Last new car was a 2021 Highlander which I love.

I think the market needs vehicles with a whole lot more technology. More actuators, sensors, etc. Also the screens and the sleeping options are relatively limited. A 32" screen would be nice. Full reclining driver's seat with built in comforters would also be nice. And to ensure our clients understand the level of comfort and luxury we give them, the price should be upped another 40%. After these changes, I think we're off to the races!......AFFORDABLE. SIMPLE. RELIABLE. PERIOD. First one to figure it out wins. Cheers

You have this exactly backwards.. first off , a consumer doesn’t subsidize anything, they consume and aren’t producing, how would you subsidize a product you’re not evening creating , this product is being exported to you. The world is subsidizing u.s. consumption , I.e. United States consumers.. we are able to do this because for now.. our currency is the world reserve , the only thing we produce and export is our debt to other nations.
@us-unclesam65668 ай бұрын
@@gdub9998 You start with the Marshall Plan after WW II. You rebuild your enemies infrastructure with American Tax Dollars. Next you rebuild the middle class in that country, once again at American expense Next, you give the country, Most Favored Nation Status in world trade agreements. Next, you allowed domestic industry and manufacturing infrastructure to relocate, in the foreign country and build and ship back to America with tax subsides. You let business acquire the benefits of cheap labor while all at the same time you allow them to charge American waged based prices for the products made overseas. You keeping going foreign country to foreign country hunting down the cheapest wages. That is the business model destroying American manufacturing. ( Remember Adam Smith in the Wealth Of Nations, wrote the role of government in a free trade economy is to protect HOME manufacturing.) Look at this way, when hard times comes, who goes down first the rich or the poor? America after WW II was the richest country on the face of the earth and had an untouched manufacturing base geared for war. We had to rebuild the world, destroyed by the war. It was boom time in America. Being the nice guys we were, we did it on the backs of the American Workers Tax Dollars. The Problem is that business got fat, dumb and happy on building a foreign consumer market and used our money to do it. Now, the worm has turned, America is slowly going broke, after exhausting its massive reserve from when it was on top. Some call it Globalization, others Free Trade and the truly wise call it a scam of unprecedented wealth transfer from the backs of American Workers to world elites.

The debt Toyota has is similar to other companies so that is a wash. It's high because they have so much market share. I do agree with Japan declining in economic terms due to an aging population and lower birth rates. The only thing propping up the US population is the high immigration rate. Birth rates in the US are down too from current citizens. Toyota's quality is going down due to the EPA continuing to increase CAFE fuel economy ratings. Not Toyota's or other manufacturers fault. They are forced into small displacement engines with turbo's. Not gonna get into the political discussion on this matter. It is what it is. Toyotas are more expensive thus the increased sales of higher line Hyundai's in the SUV line and like you said on Chevy and Ford options over the Tacoma's and Tundras. Another great video. Thanks.

Hey bud I've been looking at the new Tacoma for a few months and made up my mind will be getting a TRD Sport (will be road driven mainly) and I get the prices are stupid... This will be my first truck. And I did consider the Ranger especially the Raptor but, I just don't trust Ford for the long term reliability. I see a lot of people mention Toyota maybe complacent banking on their past to sell their future vehicles - but the reliability can't be denied. Also people mentioning the turbo and, more parts? I've had 2 Suby STi's and never had an issue with them. The 1st a 2004 I had until 2011 and got a 2012 STi and still have owned brand new and never had an issue with a 4 cyl turbo and remember - Toyota owns 40% of Subaru. So with all that said I know the Taco is more money but you are getting more comfort and tech than the 3rd gen. Does that justify the major jump? Likely no - but hands down everyone agrees this is the best cabin for a Tacoma.

First of all, to lower MSRPs, Toyota should go back to basics and just install necessary & robust items and don't get suck into all these techy nonsense like other brands. The all motor V6 is fan favorite. No if or buts! Second and most of all, in my opinion as a Toyota loyalist, is to sanction dealerships that are marking up prices like these rides are made of gold, and no other options are available to buyers!

Hey Ben, I think there is one thing that you got wrong about "Toyota is being pushed to adopt new technologies to build these small motors because of tighter and tighter restrictions". It's not that Toyota HAS TO build these smaller motors, but they are choosing to build them because they get the government subsidies to do so. Look at Ford, Jeep and others they have chosen to keep the V8 and not take the higher subsidies from the government. I bought my first Toyota in 1981 and now I have two Lexus now as well as a Toyota Tundra V8. I won't be buying any of Toyota's new, over priced junk. Thank you for ALL you do! Mark

Toyota has recently undergone a huge philosophy change. Their OG philosophy was "tried and true", now they are almost all Hybrids, Turbos and in some vehicles both. Without their reliability/longevity, they suck as a brand. Because they usually do not have the tech, the size, the features or options that other brands have.

Love the videos Ben! I don’t know why anyone would buy a SR5 Tacoma for $43K I trust the Nissan (yes, Nissan) Frontier V6 and cloned Mercedes transmission much more than the Toyota. Sure, with the Nissan, you’ll replace a windshield wiper motor, or door lock actuator, but it’ll still end up cheaper, and the powertrain will last longer because it’s naturally aspirated. Truthfully, the Frontier is the best bargain in the segment! Also, a 2.7 V6 (which is the base F-150 engine and is known to be solid) Ranger XLT with the FX4 package and heated seats is only about $2K more than the base SR5 model Toyota! Who the hell would pay that for a base model?!?!?

Prices are high. My wife's '18 RAV4 XLE hybrid is a perfect vehicle so we want another Toyota so I looked at the new Avalon replacement Crown. The least expensive without dealer add ons, taxes, doc fees, etc. was base model 46,000 to 55,000 for the platinum. They are all hybrids which is fine but you could buy the last year of the Avalon I would say from 38-42 grand. I told my wife we can now buy a well equipped certified BMW X5 or Acura MDX with low miles for the same or less money. A new RAV4 hybrid is 34-40 grand depending on model. They are pricing themselves out of the market.
