The seemingly impossible Quintuple-Double... is there reason to believe Wilt Chamberlain actually did it many years ago? This video answers that question.

Nope. A detriment to his team due to poor free throw shooting, no real shooting touch, vastly diminished stats in the playoffs, no mamba. Sort of a blend of Shaq and DeAndre Jordan, the best rebounder ever and a defensive force. A great player, he'd still put up big numbers, but nowhere near being the GOAT.

@@charms71 Wilt is a very goal-oriented person, and and under Alex (Hannum) he wanted to win a title and become the first center to lead the league in assists. He liked to pass to Hal Greer or myself, because we just caught it and shot it. Chet Walker usually caught the ball, took a dribble or two and then shot it - no assist for Wilt (under the assist rules of that time). So Wilt preferred to give the ball to us. - Billy Cunningham Wilt went out of his way to chase his assist stats - going as far as to AVOID passing to Hall of Fame teammate Chet Walker because he would most likely not get an assist from Walker under the format of recording assist statistics at the time.

I think wilt played against Russell alone almost as much as shaq did against other Hofers period. And most of the ones Wilt played against were younger and fresher than him. Whereas Shaq got a lot of his games vs hofers against old guard holdovers from the 80s. And pretty sure Wes Unseld was the only hallof fame center Wilt went against that was under 6"9. I've heard both Magic and Worthy tell slightly different versions of this story. Each one agreed that Wilt did not allow a single basket. Most of Wilt's quadruple-doubles ARE on film/tape, even though not officially recognized at the time. No matter who your "GOAT" candidate is, pick any ONE of their greatest individual achievements (e.g., "most 50 point games), and chances are that Wilt accomplished it more in ONE SEASON than your "GOAT" did in his CAREER. As Walt "Clyde" Frazier famously noted, “Wilt Chamberlain is the only superman to ever play the game. His records are HILARIOUS. Anybody they talk about doing something, Chamberlain has done it hundreds of times.”

@@marcusmvpgoat1236 Wilt played in all 160 games, and averaged 48.5 and 47.6 minutes those seasons. This is CLEAR evidence of stat padding. No team in history goes through a season without enduring multiple blowout games, so it is obvious with Wilt rarely stepping off the floor that he was padding his stats. A good example is the March 7, 1962 game between the Celtics and Sixers, in which the Celtics won 153-102, yet Wilt played the whole game. In BOTH Wilt's 50 and 45 ppg seasons, his teams were DEAD LAST in opponents' points allowed - the absolute WORST defense in the league. After the 1961-62 season, Wilt only delivered 22 in Game 7 of the 1962 EDF when it mattered against the Celtics, and they lost.

My grandfather was a statistician for the Minneapolis Lakers for one season, back when he was in college. He hated it when the team eventually moved to Los Angelos, but he remained a lifelong Lakers fan, up until the Timberwolves came along in the early 90’s. So anyway, he was only an official statistician for that one season, but he still always loved to go to games and keep stats for himself. Then, after the game ended, he’d compare his stats to the official stats, just to see how close his numbers were, and then, he’d point out what the professionals got wrong. Although blocks and steals weren’t yet official stats at that time, my grandfather used to keep up with them, anyway, just because he thought they were important. He was able to go to a few games that season, and fortunately, the so-called quintuple double game was one of those games he attended. Sadly, the myth about Wilt having 24 blocks and 11 steals was inaccurate, according to my grandpa, who was the most honest man I’ve ever known. He didn’t dispute the fact that Wilt had an amazing game, but he said he didn’t actually have 24 blocks, though. The truth was, unfortunately, that Wilt only had 22 blocks that night. He also should have been given credit for an extra steal that he made, so, apparently, it wasn’t just his blocks that were incorrect. Though it would’ve been an unbelievable game for anyone else, my grandpa said that it was just a slightly above average performance for Wilt. As it turned out, he actually finished the game with just 22 blocks, to go along with his 12 steals, but, in all fairness, it was still the only quintuple double ever, so at least there’s that 🤷🏿‍♂️

There were two Wilt Chamberlains. The first WIlt was from 1959-1968. The second Wilt from 1969-1973. The latter Wilt didn't focus on scoring so much but defense and rebounding. I've always found it odd that NBA pundits routinely dismiss Wilt in the GOAT conversation. No disrespect to LeBron and Jordan or even Kareem. But I don't think either of these great players could amass 53 points, 32 rebounds, 14 assists, 11 steals, and 24 blocks while playing all 48 minutes. One way to verify this feat is to contact the eyewitnesses! Chet Walker, Wali Jones, Billy Cunningham, Johnny Green, (Jerry West/Elgin Baylor DNP), Luke Jackson, Bill Melchionni, Matt Guokas, Archie Clark (first legit crossover), Freddie Crawford, Darrall Imhoff, and MEL COUNTS are still alive! During the years Wilt put up huge numbers, he was asked to be a scorer. Both are IRRELEVANT because both guys are retired. Thats why ESPN and big sport companies only prefer LeBron and MJ debates, because it includes an active player, which means more clicks and more interest = more money. The media has ALWAYS been pushing the GOAT debate with an active player. For example, Kobe was constantly being put against MJ, and then as soon as he retired, they ditched that and focused entirely on LeBron. There is methods to their madness.

#1 no doubt, Wilt was not only the greatest basketball player of all time , but also the greatest athlete of all time. I think that because he was 7'-2"" people think he wasn't a great athlete. I guarantee no one could out run him , out jump him or were anywhere near his level of strength. On top of that was his endurance, it is almost hard to believe a man his side could pull the minutes he did at the pace they played in his era ! One word Superman!!!!

Wilt is the Babe Ruth of basketball. The records and stories are so astounding that people can't believe them, so people naturally focus on all the reasons they might NOT be the greatest ever. But if you don't do that, and consider that it's even possible they MIGHT be the greatest ever, you're led almost unavoidably to the conclusion that they WERE the greatest ever. Because even if you mark them down a bit for the eras in which they played, they're just SO FAR beyond everyone else that it's not enough to close the gap.

You've got to bow down, Wilt," Rodgers told Chamberlain. "Admit it, cat, that we're a much better club with you feeding us part of the time and then getting back to protect our basket." ..Despite grudgingly yielding to Hannum's authority, he still resented the coach, and complained about him to Guy Rodgers, one of his closest friends on the team. But Rogers thought Hannum's strategy was obviously paying off. Rogers wanted to see the Warriors win, and it vexed him that Chamberlain seemed willing to put his own pride ahead of the best interests of the team "You've got to bow down, Wilt," Rodgers told Chamberlain. I consider Wilt to be the GOAT, let's just look at ONE of his stats, Wilt scored 30 points and had 30 rebounds in 124 games, including the game that this video addresses, that works out to about once every ten games he played. THE ENTIRE REST OF THE NBA.... 36 times, that's every player who ever laced up a pair of sneakers and walked onto an NBA court... 36 times. If that doesn't indicate how good he was, nothing will.

Wilt WAS a stats hog and selfish in his early career. He STARTED changing that to a degree with the 76ers - at least in part because he respected Alex Hannum (the ONLY coach to beat the Russell-era Celtics in the Finals, and then he won a SECOND championship with Wilt and the 76ers - but the Celtics went down in the East before the Finals THAT time). He turned into a very good "team player" with the Lakers, to the point that in 1972 his old rival/friend Bill Russell watched one playoff game Wilt was in and said "he's playing like I did - but better!".

I don't care where you put Wilt on your all time list, but there is one thing where I think many fans have it simply wrong about Wilt. Many fans will use Wilt's playoff PPG as a way to say he "choked" in the playoffs. Well, let's look at that specific aspect and consider things that seem to get often overlooked. In 1967 Wilt was asked by his coach to take on more of a Russell type of role (defensive anchor and facilitator focus over scoring focused) considering how well the Celtics were doing with their center in that role, and also to maximize the offensive output of the other scorers on the Sixers. Wilt played 108 playoff games after taking this role which was 67.5% of his entire playoff career. During this time he took 12.7 FG attempts per game and averaged 17.6 PPG. Prior to this when he was in the main scoring option role in the playoffs he took 26.1 FG attempts per game and averaged 32.8 PPG in 52 playoff games. So his shot attempts went down by 13.4 a game after accepting the role change and this playoff span was more than twice as long as the span where he was taking the most shots on his team. Shot attempts changing and amount of games after that change is where the main correlations are. He simply was trying to score less per coach's instruction and scheme. His first scoring option playoff PPG at 32.8 is only slightly behind Jordan's 33.4 and ahead of anyone else's. He also had a 56 point playoff game in 4 quarters, where the only playoff games that surpassed that were Baylor's 61 in 4 quarters, and Jordan's 63 in double overtime. Also In 22 elimination games Wilt averaged 31.2 PPG. For comparison Jordan (since he is considered to be clutch) averaged 31.3 in elimination games. The "choker" label for Wilt based on playoff PPG is unwarranted.

In 1962 Wilt won the scoring title (50 ppg), yet he lost the Game 7 of the 1962 EDF against the Celtics and got outscored by Sam Jones 28 to 22. Where was the 100 points and 50 ppg when it actually mattered? Sam Jones also hit the game winner over Wilt as the Celtics won Game 7, 109-107. Once again, keep in mind that the 1961/62 Sixers had the absolute worst defense in the league, and it was reflected in Russell's high scoring. In the 1962 playoff series alone Bill Russell had games of 31, 31, and 29 pts in the series. Bill Russell never in his career averaged 19 ppg in a season, but he averaged over 20 ppg vs Wilt in both the 1960 and 1962 playoff series - in spite of the fact that Russell was a team-first player who usually did not need to score to dominate a game (à la Bird). In 9 playoff meetings against Russell, Wilt's ppg decreased from his regular season every time, while Russell's increased on multiple occasions.

@@emeanuele caught it and shot it. "He said in training camp that he wanted to lead the league in assists. He thought that would be cool. Of course, we all thought that would be cool too. But he didn't want us to run. He wouldn't throw outlet passes off rebounds. Only Billy or Chet were allowed to run out and score on the fastbreak if they got long rebounds.

@@camaradiop3731 The ABA beat the NBA in exhibition games EVERY YEAR after the first - and the ABA champion won ALL of their exhibition games against the NBA Champion every year (no matter who the respective champions were each year). Yes, ABA stats definitely SHOULD be counted - the ABA is just as much an "ancestor" of the NBA as the NBL is at this point, particularly since the NBA is playing ABA STYLE BASKETBALL and has been since the 1980s (a point DOCTOR J made in an interview - think he might know a little on the subject?). Basketball Reference DOES have "combined" lists on many stats - and it's very interesting to see where the best ABA player seasons and players land on those stats. Hint - it took the NBA 22 YEARS before Reggie Miller IN HIS BEST 3 POINT SHOOTING YEAR EVER finally beat the ABA record set by Louis Dampier in *HIS* 2'nd ABA year - and it took Ray Allen *26 years* to take more 3 point attempts than Louis did. Hmmm, the #2 and #3 (debateable since Steph hasn't caught Rays totals yet) all time best 3 point shooters in NBA History BARELY topped the best of the ABA - and it's possible Ray had not been BORN yet when Louis set those ABA records (Reggie had been but would not have been in grade school yet). For more perspective. Louis scored 199 3 pointers in the 1967-1968 season - and backed that up with 198 in the next season. John Starks was the first player EVER to score 200 or more - in 1994-1995, 27 YEARS LATER - and never hit more than 168 in any season after that. John hadn't even been BORN when Louis set THAT mark. It's also interesting to watch Don Buse (Pacers long time point guard) lead the ABA in assists AND Steals during the last ABA season - then do the SAME in the NBA the first year AFTER the merger.
