Both of these guys (David Coverdale and John Sykes) have gigantic egos even Cozy Powell who also had issues with Coverdale after two years and left after the Rock in Rio festival in 1985 but at the time Coverdale was under contract with Geffen records and had all past albums re-released by the company and had the slide it in album remixed to give it more of a quote " US feel to the music" and that was the decision of john Kalodner the guy who also worked with Aerosmith to get their group back on track. John joined Whitesnake at the end of 1983 after the album was released in the UK and this was when Kolodner saw the potential to make them the next big thing, so when Geffen signed the group it was right at the time David signed with Geffen and work had started on 1987 shortly after Rock in Rio, however, it is bad enough to work in a group with one inflated ego and worse when there's two so with cozy he knew what was ahead of him if he stayed and chose to leave the band.

Local radio runs American Top 40 with Casey Kasem repeats from the '80s. On this, Casey says that Coverdale said that the "Whitesnake Concept" was to have an intentional rotation of personnel because it kept the creativity going and not have things stifled. That's what was being told at the time. That's the story being run on radio repeats concerning this story, just heard it at the end of January '24 at work.

Ultra big fan of WH here. The truth is that DC never recovered from this and music wise 1987 album is WS' pick (with slight exceptions here and there). The way band was treated (fired) after the album was released was deplorable and showed that DC wanted to milk all the money he could from it. He sensed it would be a hit and went all diva about it. I also don't buy "Sykes wanted to replace me as a lead vocal" shit from DC. Anyways, the thing that sicks here is that JS never recovered from this betrayal. Who can blame him.

I feel for Vandenburg and Campbell who had to mime John's guitar parts. If only the recording band stayed together for the tour and for several more albums, I can only imagine the quality of music that would have resulted. Whitesnake could have been one of the best British bands of all time. So many hired guns that followed but for me John was the best and most creative guitarist of all them. The 87 album holds so much for me in memories and inspiration.

It's a bit strange when the only consistent person in a band over time is one person lol. Whitesnake is basically a brand for David Covedale and anyone else he works with. It really should be called "David Covedale and others" :) It's a great band name though and there's a link between albums in terms of the type of music and David being the singer and a major songwriter. Still when line ups change the integrity of a band name can be questioned. It's a real shame he didn't keep that 1987 like up going particularly when Sykes is such a great guitarist and he helped write some of the songs on 1987. He should have been in the clips for that album and been able to enjoy the spoils from the tour that followed at least. Oh well it's history now.

The vocal recovery is a true fact from stretched vocal chords and sinus infection..keith confirmed as well than Ainsley i remember. The teacher Coverdale went by to get back on track is documented . John i think still not mature and patient enough on that kind of stuff , because , as singer , it that position , you have to shut up to get your voice back at least . You can't press doing vocal tracks . For the rest Coverdale have surely some responsabilities , but not that . If John , according to others sources , and not just Coverdale , wanted to press Coverdale or replace him for the recording , its logical he s fired . I mean , John had a point on songwriting parternship But on that , fuck no . Its normal . I would do the same thing Even worse as native mediterranean temper haha . Its like , if your soldiers don't follow you , you would be knocked in the back ... In that mental situation state , its a bit difficult, and believe me , after some time in studio its really hard to have a clear mind especially with conflict involved under the same house so to speak , its like you extract any potential treason from your camp at start to zero with a fresh team.
