I 100% agree with packing some eye-catching jewelry for travel. Many years ago, my luggage did not make it to my destination for 2 weeks. I remember how lucky I felt to have packed an adjustable gold chain, a colorful multi-strand necklace, and a few bold earrings in my on-board personal item. I wore the same 3 or 4 shirts for the first 10 days...but with all the colored necklace strands twisted together one day, only the blue beads another, big bold red earrings next afternoon, or the adjustable gold chain at its fullest length for an evening outing. After a little over a week, I resigned myself to knowing my suitcases were never going to make their way back to me, so I gave in and bought 1 dress, 1 pair of pants, and 2 tops, but honestly, looking at the pictures, no one could tell I wore the same things over and over again at the beginning of the trip because the mix-and-match of jewelry played such a leading role in how put-together my outfits looked. Ever since that experience, I make sure to have at least 2 changes of clothes, some cool jewelry, and a few scarves in my carry-on. Lost luggage is NOT going to ruin my vacation! (BTW, my luggage pieces were found the last day of my holiday, so I collected them at the airport and flew back home with never-opened suitcases.)

@@AlyssaBeltempo Yes, I have a lot of "traveling" and "starting over in a new location" stories, it seems. Thank you for the inspiration! I believe that feeling good about how one presents oneself to the world can have great impact on the outcome of one's path through life.

@SilverSerpent64 Thank you for such lovely words. I learned a lot from that experience. One habit I've developed since that I didn't mention: I now save money to buy a wearable memento of every place I visit. I try to get something "distinct" or representative of the places I've been---a cork purse in Portugal, niche perfume in France, a batik skirt in Polynesia, an emerald charm in Colombia, a jade ring in Guatemala, silver earrings in Peru. Much better souvenirs than magnets or liqueur! I can wear my pieces for the rest of my life as a memory of the countries I've been to, and very often, support a traditional artisan or a small business while I'm there.

@@irairod5160 what a story you have. I'm currently putting together a small capsule wardrobe for an upcoming trip where we will be moving cities every 2 days so my bag will need to be light (COO). I always put a couple outfits in my personal item just in case the airline makes me check my carry-on at the last minute and loses my bag. I will look to colorful jewelry and accessories to make my smaller capsule work. Thank you for the inspiration. Oh, and I've already started doing what you do with trip mementos. I no longer buy souvineers for others and only buy what will bring me joy when I rewear it.
@irairod5160 Жыл бұрын
@Kimberly Berlin Thank you for the kind and thoughtful comment! Yes, pack 2 pairs of eye-catching earrings and 2 necklaces that can be worn long or short. If they all mix and match, even better! Most pictures are taken from the waist up, so give preference to those rather than bracelets, belts, or even purses. Another very lightweight accessory that I think adds a lot of mileage is a silky or satiny square scarf. It can become a headband, a neckerchief, a ponytail tie, a bracelet, a strap for a wristlet, a headscarf, a shoulder wrap, a mini skirt over a bathing suit or leggings, a dickie under a shirt...and it can hang from a belt loop or a handbag. If you make a capsule in which there's a predominant neutral color (mine, in summer and spring, is usually navy) and every other color you pack looks good with it (brown, nude, or taupe shoes, many light-colored tops and a few brights, 1 or 2 prints or graphic designs) you will easily have 20 combinations in a backpack.

Interesting subject Alyssa which ties in nicely to my new approach to dressing in general which is to color block. I basically have 3 capsule wardrobes. One in navy, another in black, and the third in white & cream. I also have colorful summer dresses which stand alone. I recently traveled for 2 weeks using only the black wardrobe, (3 bottoms, 1 button-up, 2 silk T-shirts, 2 cotton T-shirts, 1 camisole, long cashmere cardigan, with a couple of cream items thrown in, a cardigan, 1 silk top, 1 camisole. Animal print flats, black leather loafers, black and white sneakers. 3 scarves but ended up only wearing one black & grey leopard print. It was a visit to London & Paris in October so lack of color was totally appropriate but I did use jewelry to brighten things up. It's amazing how little one can actually get away with and I really enjoyed the simplicity of getting dressed!

I’m nearly 58 and a lot of things I couldn’t wear (shorts!) but I could resonate with the concept of having a couple of silhouettes you love, keeping a neutral palette but then add some texture and colour to keep it interesting! I don’t wear much jewellery apart from a watch but I love statement earrings as my hair is short and choppy and they take up very little room in my suitcase 😊

I like to challenge myself sometimes for traveling- example: I was with my family in Bavaria in spring a couple years ago- I decided to pack ONLY white and creams…..the combinations and “add on’s “ I chose to add during my trip made it really interesting! Gonna do it with black or brown/ tans next! Aloha!

I love this and all things travel! You're so wise with your analysis. A well-planned capsule can make a trip more fun. If you have exactly the right mix, you'll save time, money, and bag weight. No dithering around, and you might even have to (get to) purchase a few more treasures on your journey. I have sweaters, shoes, and jewelry pieces that are the best possible "souvenirs" from my journeys. I get to enjoy them always. Don't forget to try on EVERYTHING before you depart to ensure each item is ideal. Bon voyage!

Great tips. I always set out possible outfits at least one week before, in a 3 colour palette. I finalise it when I know what the weather will be like. I’ve just been away for 7 days in the UK with a minimal capsule, 4 tops, 3 bottoms, 2 layers and 2 shoes. That was basically 12 outfits before varying the shoes and layers which brings it up to 48.

Thank you for this!!! Hope you`re doing well!

When I travel, I’ve learned to be realistic about what I take, especially with regard to being comfortable if I’m going to be out and about all day long. Because I never check a bag, I only take my faves, those things I never tire of. Cold weather traveling is the most difficult because clothes are bulkier, so I wear/carry my “biggest” items, i.e boots, jeans, heaviest sweater, etc. And, of course, being able to mix and match is crucial. For sleeping, I take a good-looking, but comfy, street-ready top and bottom, so I can run out for an early morning coffee or a late dinner. I also fly with a HUGE, but malleable, canvas tote to transport my purse and any “soft” clothing that can easily survive being squished under the seat in front of me.

some tips and tricks to think about. it is still uber hot here in florida, so to think about packing sweaters? ugh. and double ugh for jeans which i just do NOT wear. ever. hate them. lol. why? they don't look right on me. ever. never have. so while i cannot get much specifically relatable to my own personal issue of picking out a capsule for some upcoming travel, i still love all your basic tips. the one takeaway for me is about the jewelry. mine is mostly vintage costume, but i use it for the same purpose. i have been giving out this advice to others who come to me because i have become known as the queen of packing light when travelling. lol. (lots of the advice comes directly from you, my dear!) thanks again and kitty kisses for apollo.

I make my packing list early and edit often. I use only carryon and am limited due to walking a lot or hiking vacation thus my outfits tend to be outdoorsy; mainly tech pants, easy wash and dry layer friendly tops. I bring my ipad and battery bank all the time therefore bag has to be light weight, no leather bag. I mostly cook breakfast and dinner from scratch, thus don’t need dressy outfit. I love accessorize with headwear, scarves, and jewelry I don’t mind losing (nothing expensive). They are small and packing friendly. After the trip I highlight the items on packing list I didn’t use during the trip as a reminder not to bring for similar future trips.

I've been in England and in Paris in the spring when it was 40-60° F in the daytime. Take at least one heavy wool cardigan (or 3) plus a trenchcoat for the rain. A warm scarf, or you can buy one there. A travel umbrella. Plan to dress in layers. In 3 weeks, it can go from pleasant fall weather to winter, so those wool cardigans will be your friend under your trenchcoat. I envy you! It's going to be beautiful.

Honestly, I don't even think about getting bored with my clothes on trips! I don't tavel to put on a fashion show for strangers. What I want, even on a long vacation, are clothes that I can just grab when I'm jet lagged without worrying that I'll look like I got dressed in the dark or a hobo. I learned to pack very light. My necessities are in my carry-on; at least 3 knit tops, socks, underwear, jewelry, basic makeup and skincare, toothbrush, etc. My pjs, spare shoes, more tops and bottoms, a dressy outfit, etc. go in my checked suitcase. I wear black or dark blue jeans, my trainers, and my outerwear on the plane. The airline lost my suitcase on a 10-day trip to London and the hotel never told me that the airline had delivered it. After 5 days I asked at the desk about contacting the airline and they had it in the storeroom the whole time.

You're not the only one! I have a strategy for long trips. I'm a big walker/hiker, so a few months ahead I buy new (or select from my closet) hiking shoes, running shoes, and sandals. I wear them in (before traveling) for about a month or certain number of miles. Then they're perfect for the journey. I might also take flip flops for the beach. Before I depart, I'll either donate or dispose of worn shoes. They served me well, and I've had a fabulous adventure too!

No, you are not alone. I once traveled to France with a single pair of shoes (congratulating myself on my light packing), and lost the heel of one somewhere on the cobblestones at Versailles - didn't notice till back at the hotel. Fortunately the French-speaking friend I was with was able to help me navigate the local shoe store/European sizes. Now I always take 2 pairs for even short trips, just in case.
