2FAST 4YOU82 Well, it’s usually the neon ballasts that go out, not the bulbs. Bruce bud nick sells the ballasts for an affordable price. The headlights can be converted to leds also. 1993-1995 does not have this problem (no neon or hid), 1996-1998 does. What year is the mark 8 you’re looking at. I’ll give you a list of the problems that the certain generations have. All mark 8’s: Air suspension, Rear subframe brackets might be rotted (can buy brackets brand new still) Rot in general, rockers, and subframe. Tend to rot from the inside out. Brakes, (they tend to need brake jobs every 25k-50k miles) sway bars are hollow, might be snapped or are weak enough to snap due to rust. This is a cheap fix though. Cooling system is very sensitive, any air bubbles will cause it to boil out of the over flow, over heat, and sometimes even have owners selling them thinking it’s a head gasket issue. Oil filter adapter gasket, can sometimes mimic a head gasket leak (oil/coolant mix), or just leak oil onto the ground) cheap fix. Valve cover gasket leak (absolute pita, these are to be expected to fail on any old car) Alternators can cause issues that seem like electrical gremlins, easy replacement. The radios/amps tend to fail eventually. Power steering will develop leaks, (high pressure line, and the rack) Gen 1 1993-1995: Transmission (has a roller clutch), which is the typical failure point, they’re not bad at all, after 25+ years though there is a chance it will fail, I’ve had good luck with mine. Interior is cheap and delicate, depends on if it was taken care of or not. Headlights suck at night, high beams do just fine though. Gen 1/2 1996 (stay away!!!!, this year has many parts for the computers that are specific to that year, and can leave it parked for months until you find someone selling that part) Gen 2: Hid’s will fail and are expensive can be converted. Rear neon will fail (ballast typically fixes it) Blend door will fail (climate control will be stuck on cold) Power tilt/drivers seat motors will fail. (They automatically adjust, over time it will cause unneeded wear) Irmcs tend to be a failure point. Which will choke up the car and cause it to lose loads of top end power. That’s about all, if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask. I will answer any Questions you have.

The stupidity is what makes Mr. Random so entertaining! Among other things he thinks that buying an old used automatic transmission with high miles on it is a proper repair - for $400 what you bought each time was a rebuildable core. I’ve also enjoyed his hilarious home made hot air intake systems that he mistakenly calls a cold air intake. The great part of his selling it after all those repairs is that the next buyer is that much closer to having a finished car. As to blowing head gaskets: it’s not that the gasket or engine design makes it prone to this failure - it’s the initial problem of an unnoticed or ignored water leak leading to missing coolant and overheating.

I had a 1998 Lincoln Mark 8 for several years and only had one problem. The "seat/tilt wheel memory" setting became intermittent and was fixed by replacing the resistance unit for a small fee at a Ford/Lincoln authorized dealership. I loved the vehicle and wish I still had it. The car was way-before-it's-time with electronic features. Self dimming rear view mirror, turn signals that get louder thru the radio loudspeakers if you forgot to turn it off after merging, luxury interior, wipers that increase automatically in speed when you increase your speed, air ride that adjusts the height of the vehicle dependant on speed for aerodynamics. I loved the self-diagnostic trouble screen, the outside look, inside look and style, and the wrap-around dash. Mine was a metallic pearl. The car was a great luxury car, way ahead of it's time, at a reasonable price.

@@frankfarago2825 Thanks for your response. I only had the car for 4 years but have heard of many people having expensive issues with the neon tail light ballast, and replacement of the XXeon headlights . Again, I only had a problem with the tilt steering wheel but the dealership had the car on three different occasions as it was an intermittent problem. Noone at the dealership had experienced the problem and had to call a retired Lincoln/Ford mechanic to find the fix. Sorry I sold the car as it was a beautiful car. Had I of kept it a few more years I may have experienced more and expensive problems. With all the perks and electronics on the 98 Mark 8, i can understand why problems would be expensive, especially with the air ride suspension and replacement of the diagnostic center sensors or on-board computer.

Well, I also have a Mark VIII, a 1997. And unlike you, I really like the car. So I have no problems spending money on it. (currently nearly 15k on a $2600 car). Also mine has over 260 000 miles on it, and the essential parts still run like clockwork. It also has a propane fuel system added (because gas prices in Europe are what they are). 1. The HIDs. Yes, the original bulbs are by now vaporware. But 9006 hid bulbs, even though not meant for the 9500 housing, give off a more useable light, with barely any additional glare. I was actually disappointed going from Chinese 9006 hid bulbs to old factory 9500 hid bulbs. 2. The rear neon. It is just a small tube in the upper part of the housing, reflecting off the mirrored plastic that gives that cool look to it. Usually the ballasts go bad, but these days those can be replaced $100 on eBay. Or you could rip out the neon completely, and put in a strip of LEDs and a thin layer of frosted clear plastic, would probably look the same and the wiring would be much simpler. The other problem is that lots of crap and water get into the housing and the plastic reflector get dirty of chips off inside, once that is gone, doesn't matter if its neon or LED, it will not look good. 3. gas gauge failing. Might be the cluster (don't bother fixing it just get a new one from a wrecking yard). Or it could be the float of the fuel pump housing. Mine was the latter. 4. My sunroof still works. Of course i don't use it very often. My leather is still intact, after 5 years of dailying this, haven't managed to break it yet. Electric seat motor. You don't need the whole seat, just the frame, or just the motor. Also, easy access feature, which moves the seat and the steering column for entry and exit, can be turned off. 5. power steering blah-blah-blah. This is a problem. Not the power steering pump itself, but the fact that replacing the steering rack, the headers/exhaust manifolds or accessing engine oil pan is essentially an engine out job, in the sense that engine stays in place, but the whole front subframe needs to be dropped. so a $300 job becomes a $1200 job. 6. Unless you're a MarkVIII purist, chuck the whole air ride and put in Arnott system. I did, and now the car drives like on the rails. Also, Arnott replacement system is 1.5-2" lower than factory ride height. As my air ride was stuck in the highest possible position, with the replacement i gained 5mpg on-highway mileage. 7. Mirror tilting can be disabled. 8. My cats still work. 9. Just remove the transmission and have it rebuilt with slightly upgraded parts. I did. Cost the same as a junker transmission. 10. Headgasket. Well. I do have a case of disappearing coolant, about 1 liter every six months. But the car runs fine in the whole rev range, does not overheat and premixed coolant is €2.6 per liter, so I just top it off. To that list I would add: 11. IMRC actuator box. The 197-98 have electronically actuated IMRC valves on the intake. A little box behind the engine, with 1mm cables running from the box to the IMRC valves. There cables get frayed, or the box stops working properly. And it is nearly impossible to find this part. Luckily this feature can be programmed out from the ECU. 12. Although the body itself is surprisingly resistant to salt and corrosion, there are some parts that are not. One would be the rear sway-bar. With it broken, it drives like a car with a solid rear axle, with a new junker one, it drives like a sports car. The EVAP canister tray also rusts through, dropping the canisters on the ground.

Main 2 issues I seen were 1. airbags if it still had them, solution is cheap conversion kit if you buy 97 Ford Thunderbird v8 front quick struts and rear springs, 2. Transmission which you install a shift kit which is easy to install and a transmission cooler with fan. Never had the broken seat issue in any Mark 8 I had, never had the bad head light issue, never blew a head gasket in one of these, never had the clogged cat issue. Like the previous post said you had a clapped out car nobody took car of.

Not trying to discredit the video but half the things he said in this video are false and half are pretty true.the rear neon is easy to find actually and only an $80 paty all the parts he listed that were "unreplacable" are easily replaceable and not hard to find if you join the mark 8 forums on Facebook.also the "not reacting well to mods" is highly false..or else nobody would have bought the 90s cobras..first mod to be able to do anything is swap to cobra intake manifold headers exhaust tune and your stock 5.0 mustang fast..you just got a bad mark viii lol.not trying to hate on the video either I've owned 3 mark viiis and I know there a pain in the ass but cmon don't judge them on one car.also its not cobra powered lol the cobras are lincoln powered if you do your research the 4 valve was in the mark viii first.love the channel tho and keep up the great vids

Yeah, I can see that. Not the car for most. I have one. Overheated, leaked, couldn't trust on a long drive, etc. 2 years later, I find it to be one of my most favorite cars I have ever owned. It handles pretty well considering the cheap conversion kit I used. I got videos of it sliding around.

Perhaps it’s the fact that to talk down on vehicles everyone else is happy with. You played down the ranger for Christ sakes. Have you seen the following for rangers? Take a different approach dude, the car isn’t for you, so be it. Doesn’t mean it’s a bad car, it’s a car for car guys. A collectors car at this point with what was one of the most sophisticated setups at the time, that’s why there’s so many sensors and fancy, expensive items. Don’t buy 20 year old special cars if you aren’t prepared for the ups and downs of owning them. Half the comments would agree with what I’m saying. Good luck

@@Hudbudd you're wasting your time trying to use logic on someone who is only in it for the hype (positive or negative). The classic tale of scoring a cheap vehicle with questionable maintenance history, and when it fails; trash the vehicle make and model but not the sensibilities that should have made a more informed decision. Watching this vid was cringeworthy. One would think he was critiquing a showroom new MY 2021 vehicle with his hyper critical levels of dissatisfaction over routine maintenance issues with a 20 year old car. Oddly enough, I don't get the vibe that he went in completely unresearched. Infact I believe he looked up the known trouble areas then later disregarded them. Zero due diligence behind checking his purchase over critically in the face of a sweet deal. This vid is the reality of his irresponsibility setting in. Deep within he knows it's a good car, but because this example represents the roll of the die he threw, he projects it outward in disappointment with himself. He is clearly aware that Mk8s are lauded by 99% of the folks who've had the pleasure of owning them...for a damn good reason. This is the kind of kid that would go after an 03-04 Terminator because of what it represents, but if he was to encounter real world problems with it due to lack of service hystory, would trash it on a video. He's definitely not a "car" guy. Every car guy knows that vehicles come with inherent quirks. A car guy knows that a vehicle's age, mileage, etc. are good guides to know which quirks to watch for. And when they do manifest, it isn't treated as if the car broke some sacred promise...especially when it was gotten for a price inversely proportionate to reliability.

most of those issues, mirrors and seats wear from the OVER USE .. by not turning off the Auto feature, easily done, as far as the air ride, it is easily repaired, in fact when I buy one on springs... I put air back on it .. Mark VII's have a good following of great peps .. willing to help, if you had only asked ,,I have several in my collection, and just bought another, in the last week... they are awesome cars ... I just bought a 98 LSC with 60k miles last week, from elderly folks that could not get in and out of the car very well anymore, but at 90 years old thats expected. Everything original, and all works fine for now. Still on stock HID's and they look great, but when they go I will get a kit and convert it and use the same bulbs. I may pull the neon to see if I need to seal it up somehow, before it breaks... I have my old stereo from my Tbird, and want to put it in my Mark but I heard others mentioning it may make the neon light ballast go out?

So you got one lemon and replace two transmissions with used $400 eBay( God knows what's wrong with them already) instead of rebuilding them properly. That's why you knock the car? I would agree that the 4.6 timing system is a ridiculous adventure to try and replace with a ridiculously long and three piece nightmare to boot. But on the other hand every 4.6 leather two valve or four valve has been ridiculously reliable for me.I've had a half a dozen two valve, and 3 (4v) cobras /Mach 1 cars and they were outstanding. Put Over 320,000 miles on two of the 2valve, and none of them less than 225,000 before I sold them, running mind you. And at least 12 f-150s (4.6 2v) in a fleet of HVAC trucks. and that's not mentioning the 70s and 80s and '90s Ford trucks I've had with 302/ inline 6 / v6 and diesels,,, all of which were outstanding vehicles. Have had a little bit of all type of vehicles Toyota's Chevys dodges hands down the most reliable and durable trucks I've ever owned were all Fords. Chevy's rear end is garbage, Dodge interior and transmission garbage, and the only complaint I could ever make about a tundra is you should have made a 3/4 ton suspension package or maybe 1ton...but that's only because I pull way too much weight with them in the first place. If you're going to buy a reliable vehicle make it a ford, except that damn 6.0 (unless you have an extra $6,000 plus to dump into it and then it's actually not a bad motor)... Good luck!!

Little things will continue to go wrong on a 25 year old car; that's no surprise to us old folk, who have had old cars in the past. For someone like the author of this video to expect no problems, is almost hilarious. Besides, for a lot of us, it's a labor of love fixing our cars, and sometimes improving them. My neon brake light died, and I did go through the trouble of rebuilding it with LEDs to avoid the problem in the future, as LEDs are easy to find, and a neon with ballast for this car, just isn't. It wasn't difficult, just a bit time consuming, but working in a nice garage with my stereo playing and having a cold beer handy made the day go by real quick, and then BINGO! I had a well working brake light again. Same with lots of other little fixes. Happy wrenching!

All the the problems you listed are well know, 20+ year old cars especially the mark viii require patience and some skill to maintain. Ballast replacements for the neons are available if you'd looked, power seat issues, steering wheel motors etc are all well understood by the community and are far less challenging to repair then you make out. Air ride maintenance is certainly a new skill to a fist time mark viii owner but again, our community has plenty of info to help sort it out. Unlike some later European system (IE w220) the mark viii system is downright simple to work on once you get your head around it. I think your problem is best summed up by "the cobra powered Lincoln" line, the mustang cobra got the Mark VIIIs engine not the other way around. Enjoying these cars requires a degree of patience and skill you simply don't seem to possess, unless your willing to really apply yourself to this hobby perhaps avoid such a complex car in the future.

Man, this is fearmongering at its best. Coming from an S-class (unfortunately just totaled because I was rear-ended), all of this is trivial. Bags or a coil conversion kit is pennies on the dollar compared to $1500 a piece AirMatic struts. The newest of these cars are well over 25 years old at this point, so if you’re going into an old luxury coupe expecting Corolla levels of reliability, you’re on a fool’s errand. Picking up a 44k mile Collector’s Edition car this coming weekend, and I couldn’t be more excited. Besides a couple dings on the left rear quarter, the car is absolutely spotless and all original.
