I'm with Michael on this. Ignoring the price and brand, just looking at the watch and how it's built... the Pelagos beats the Sub. With the Rolex you're buying brand and status. With the Tudor you're buying a great watch. Also a correction, the movement in the Pelagos is a Tudor in-house movement, not at all related to ETA. I would argue it's a BETTER movement than the Rolex as it has a silicon balance spring, on top of the full balance bridge and 70 hour power reserve..

I’ve owned a Pelagos LHD for the last two years and it’s a fantastic watch. It regularly gets compliments, more so than my Rolex, which I love but is very common to all finance bros, tech bros, lawyers and doctors. Each time you get on a plane, take a look at the wrists as you’re boarding. You’re typically gonna see several black subs on the way to your seat. Love it but unfortunately, there’s nothing special anymore about a standard black Rolex Submariner

I don’t get why people complicate the situation. If you want a nice mechanical watch, you have various brands to choose from, and each has to make a profit, as does the shop selling it to you. It’s no different to most other things. The nicer it gets, the more it costs generally. If people think the cheaper stuff is just as nice …….. just go buy it. If people want to use sundial or their phone…… just do that. Simples 😉

I used to have a milgauss (the blackface version). That was a great what and hugely underrated for what it was. The only thing I hated about it was the high polish finish, just a scratch magnet. I really liked the Pelagos on paper but in the metal I was underwhelmed. The bezel action was really good and the size was nice on my wrist but damn it is so light! The lightness combined with what felt like quite a flimsy bracelet meant it felt like far less of a quality product than the Submariner. Granted they aren’t the same price but the Pelagos isn’t really a Submariner alternative. I would go Omega instead.

I’d say the Pelagos is better than the Sub on paper, but I’d rather have a sea dweller 4000- the model that briefly came in between the older style 40mm 16600 sea dweller and the monster sea dwellers after like the James Cameron. It has the 40mm size, no date bubble and the higher depth rating (just to boast about don’t think anyone takes a dive watch that deep these days) PLUS it has the modern solid link bracelet and machined clasp as opposed to the 16600 which has the old hollow links and stamped bracelet.

For the price you do get more with Tudor’s watches in general. But you can’t deny the history and status that the Sub has. For the same price, any reasonable person would take the Sub. But I don’t think it’s worth over twice as much at retail and three times as much in the market today. But out of these two watches, I’d probably stick with the BB58. The black gilt has more character than either in my opinion and it’s even cheaper than the Pelagos especially second hand. I’ve seen them on straps as low as $2,500 and on a bracelet as low as $2,800. That’s where I’d go and spend the difference on a nice dress watch and a GShock to complete a perfect 3 watch collection.

Comparing the lume issue is tricky because Rolex doesn’t lume the bezel. There are incidences of the lume pip falling out of the sub. So, lume can always fall out, when it’s present. The lume doesn’t fall out of the vast majority of Pelagos watches, but it’s not even present in 100% of Subs. Not saying which is better. I have and love a Pelagos and have only handled Subs briefly.

Great video guys. Keep them coming. Here's my two cents. If you want to say the sub is better looking, has a finer pedigree, is more reliable, or that it's "more luxurious" you can make those arguments. But if you say the sub is jewelry and the pelagos isn't, I don't think that argument holds water. If the primary difference between the Pelagos and the Sub is that the Sub is a piece of jewelry then the Tudor is what? A tool watch? A function first, no-BS reliable watch whose primary purpose is to be legible, waterproof, and accurately measure elapsed time while diving? Ok but by the way, it costs 4500 dollars. There goes the no-frills argument. Try explaining that to a non-watch person diver and you might get a funny look. There are any number of dive computers and quartz watches that do all of those things better for a few hundred bucks or less. The reason it costs 4500 dollars is that its a well made mechanical time piece bringing you not just rugged dive-watch functionality but also swiss tradition, brand pedigree, and a handsome luxurious (sub the word "expensive" if you feel that term doesn't apply here) aesthetics. In other words "jewelry." In other words, BS. I'm a diver. Among the watches I own are a tudor diver, a rolex diver, and 2 or 3 dress watches as well. I love them all for what they are. But let's be real. What they are is jewelry.

The Rolex Sub has become jewelry, the Pelagos is a pure tool, a work instrument. They are completely different watches. I've worn the Pelagos 42 for four years working offshore .Lightweight yet chunky titanium tank, worn on the rubber strap, bashed daily, immersed in oil, grease and rancid sea water it has never missed a beat. I do love the group illusion of "tool" watches. Pretty sure if measuring time was important to a task and I turned up with a mechanical watch... I may not be taken seriously! I mean... I'll definitely have one if you're giving them away ☺️

Pro divers use dive watches as back up in case of their dive computers malfunctioning. Computers glitch, mechanical watches don’t. So it’s more about safety than accuracy. Most probably use G shocks, but I know many use mechanicals.

@@willburrows8834 this is so wrong lol. if they wanted a back up they would just bring a gshock or second cheaper dive computer but in reality diver's watch redunancy comes from the classic buddy system. If there was a problem with your computer you would surface as soon as possible using your buddy's computer as a guide.

@@Davidtime really? Two dive computers would be pretty bulky when working on subsea engineering. I stand corrected if that isn’t the case but I would have thought a watch of some kind plus a dive computer would be the safest way.

I don't think Tudor will ever beat Rolex not by product or branding. Here's why Tudor is for people who love Rolex watch design, its DNA or owned Rolex watches before, but hate how the brand + AD handling customer nowadays. Tudor is always be the love letter to Rolex every now and then according to their last hit release of BB Pro and Pelagos 39mm (which in normal situation people will likely notice it as Sub if they don't see it closely). That's why they aren't or ever be able to beat their bigger sister.

This might upset a lots of watch geek, but tbh Tudor watched quality control is awful compare to its price tag. I owned BB58 Black and the lume has not been properly filled on each hands (one of them have black stain on it) I have to went to back to AD for replace new hands which took 3-4 weeks, also some dude on watch community few years ago found Pelagos lume index came off from the bezel. This still not included the BB GMT Pepsi when it released with Date Wheel issue. Tudor is decent Rolex homage brand and watchmaker, but their price not and never worth USD 4,000. There are so many brand out there provide more better QC, more superior finishing and better distinctive looks at this price point such as ORIS, OMEGA, NOMOS and JLC.

Rolex has a bad image in my private environment. Car salesmen wear Submariners. For me, the 14060M came into question, it went back to the dealer. Felt cheap. New Submariners are better, of course, but they are also extremely flashy, visually. Embarrassing ;-) The Pelagos 39 is simply the better watch, for me. Price did not play a role in my decision.

Or that you have a rich dad. Or are a poser. Christian was right - the Sub in its current form is male jewelry. And it’s 4 or 5x more expensive - if you want to buy one at prevailing rates since only longtime customers with big spend histories are going into an AD and getting one any time soon.

For what these watches are for - diving/active wear. Any diver would go with a Pelagos first. Yes, if you ask watch nerds that foam at the mouth for the Rolex name/allure, of course you would pick a Rolex. I had an 114060 and sold it because I enjoyed wearing watches like a Turtle in most occasions. I used to skateboard down the Mission Beach/PB (San Diego) board walk with my sub and it felt wrong, a small pebble and replacing the glass/ceramic bezel would have been north of $2,000.... why? meh, got rid of my Rolexes (3). Waiting to buy a Pelagos 39. Seikos keep my wrist warm these days, and I'm having a blast; SBDC101, SBDC171, SPRE93J8..... my needs are met. Cant wait to get my hands on the Pelagos. I wouldn't get the Rolex again. I do regret selling my OP39 blk. That was a great everyday watch. Sub? you compulsive watch buyers can bid over that and pay thousands over MSRP for you to realize a few months later that its just a shiny object with a nice label.....

So I'm going to blow up your argument. Christian. You say "the allure of Rolex" as though that is a guaranteed thing. I would argue that in a room full of Rolex, which happens all the time, the Tudor is more interesting. The Tudor has better materials and the same quality movement objectively. The question becomes who are you buying to watch for and what do you truly want? Assuming that you want to be an individual, then if you're a Rolex guy or Rolex guy, you're a Tudor guy then you're a Tudor guy. Allure based entirely on other people's perceptions and trying to impress is not the way that truly impressive people think. Of course I'm just playing devil's advocate here, both watches are awesome. There's also the argument to be made about occasion. I do not think that the TUDOR works well with a suit. The submariner can go anywhere truly boardroom to bottom of the ocean.
