The Right Opinion: The Turbulent Tale of Yandere Dev - A Six Year Struggle | TRO (ft. Thafnine)
This content is meant to inform, educate, and document, and should be strictly interpreted in that context.
Intro Preview:
Ah anime… my favourite, what do people who like anime say... uwu? I’m gonna level with you guys here, one of my most commonly asked questions is if I watch anime, and although I have seen a couple movies when I was much younger: Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, I haven’t really had the chance to enjoy much of it, although I have heard great things, and I really do respect the art, some of the art is truly beautiful. Now anime has been relatively popular since the early 20th century, it obviously originated in Japan, and often represented the cultural zeitgeist at the time.
The development of digital mediums has allowed the art to flourish and expand into new genres. One of those is of course, the video game genre. There are many anime video games, and it was in the video game heyday of the 1980s that anime inspired video games, and video game inspired anime rose to prominence. Since then, their popularity has continued to extend beyond their borders, with the style attaining international prestige amongst a variety of audiences. I also want to take a moment to talk about manga, which is typically used to refer to comics and graphic novels, often created in the Japanese style, manga precedes anime, and although mangas may be made reflecting an anime style, they are by no means the same. However, there is overlap, that overlap can be demonstrated in many characterisations of individuals, this is where we meet the Yandere.
Yandere is a portmanteau (which is our word of the day) of the words “Yanderu” and “Deredere”, Yanderu meaning sick, and deredere meaning infatuated, deeply in love. So combined you reach the lovely idea that this person is in love to a sick extent, they will do anything for their senpai, even if that means often less than charitable activities. This personality trait is attributed to manga, however, it has gained popularity in anime as well, with many characters being modelled around that mould. The psychotic behaviour paired with an often cute design seems to be a good contrast that has become quite the rave, and it wasn’t until one very cheeky game developer had a very cheeky idea, how about we make a whole video game from the perspective of a Yandere.
That cheeky game developer was a person by the name of Alex Mahan, currently operating under the very fitting name of Yandere Dev.

At this point, why the fuck would he buy the subreddit for? The subreddit mods should've been much more smarter than this tbh. They already knew YandereDev's already a total dick than what they thought at first glance. They could've just been against YandereDev and let those actual allegations and proof of evidences of bullshittery through the internet stay to that sub. Last time i've checked there was this similar unrelated incident happened. Where this person has his own subreddit turned against him, demoted him from a mod to a user, and they let most of the messages he posted on that subreddit sticked for a while. Unlike YandereDev's case, he didn't organize to buy the subreddit, and the subreddit would use those messages of that former mod to be seen by others.

The most annoying thing about the "email problem" thing is that 𝘯𝘰 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘪𝘮 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮. He fired an actual programmer who could fix everything wrong with his game because he couldn't handle someone being better than him. He creates his own problems that stand in the way of the game's development and then he wastes his time complaining about them, which is standing in the way of the game's development, he takes money from people, promising them to do something that he 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴𝘯'𝘵 𝘥𝘰 and instead plays videogames. He doesn't understand that a game needs a foundation to work, and he refuses to listen to criticism. He's his game's worst enemy, and he's the reason it will never be finished. I just hope his Patreon will be closed down, as it's very much just a scam. The fact that he makes so much money from yelling and complaining, it's disgusting.

@Imani Alexander Perfectionist is a PERSONAL attitude, whether he/she is having a team doesn't matter, MJ and Beyonce is a perfectionist who can & want hiring people for their success work. Perfectionist is, well, want to make anything perfect, but they usually have their own ideas how to make it perfect, if they realised they cannot make it alone, they need to ask other people OR hiring team that can do better. So, in a way, YanDev is a perfectionist, BUT he failed cause he think whatever he do is the right one.
@EosDoesStuff
@EosDoesStuff 4 жыл бұрын
@Imani Alexander Being a perfectionist doesn't mean you're actually successful or that you actually put in work at all. Perfectionism is an attitude. For example, people who attempt to draw something once, but it doesn't turn out the exact way they want it (because they haven't developed the skills for it yet) and then give up on art entirely. They aren't creating anything, and it's their perfectionism that's preventing them from creating anything at all. Being a perfectionist is not inherently a bad thing unless you let it take over your life like YanDev does. The ideal form of perfectionism is trying and trying again till you get where you want to be, and then trying even harder from then on out to improve.

Believe me or not, but I worked for YanDev for a short time. A month, to be exact. I worked for him as an animator. At the time, I was an employed, senior-positioned animator with over 5 years of experience (currently 10 and now lead positioned). I had a lot of free time back then and friends of mine were fans of his game. Seeing as I saw that his animations were terrible, I decided to offer myself to him and see if I couldn't help improve his game's quality. YanDev was very polite to me and complimented my work quality as the best animator he's ever worked with. Honestly, that was quite likely, as most people who he had worked with until that point were only students. Either way, I made up some animations for him, he put them in an update, and progress was pretty normal for him. However, my perspective of him swayed when he began saying things in his videos that didn't match-up with the things he was telling me. He claimed in his videos to be actively receiving support from many different people, but disclosed with me in private that he was only actively working with less than 5 (including myself); most of which were highly inactive and would go silent for multiple weeks between offering him anything for his game. At that point, I was really shaken in the reality surrounding the stability of his game and it's future to ever actually be finished, but that wasn't why I stopped helping him. He asked for a sequence of animations from me to improve the quick-time melee struggle that his game already featured (you know, when someone challenges you and you have to mash to defend them? That mechanic). Basically, each struggle would be an animation loop that could then lead to a success and failure state. Failure lead back to the previous and success lead on into another loop, until either Yandere Chan was defeated or killed her challenger. That alone was about 9 (rough guess) separate animations just to implement the mechanic. However, he wanted me to produce variations of this mechanics for each different weapon that Yandere Chan could hold plus her use of the weapon against the type of challenger that she could face. That meant, for this mechanic, he was requesting a ludicrous amount of animations; close to 100 animations that all had to be carefully and mechanically connected to flow into one another as seamlessly as possible (as YanDev, somehow, didn't know how to blend Unity animations). I explained to him, politely, how extremely large that workload was and that it may not be best to invest that much of my time into developing that feature right then; especially since he told me that he didn't require me to properly polish these animations, since it was mostly just to showcase the mechanic for KZbin. Instead, I offered him an alternative mechanic for the struggle (I was an independent game developer as a hobbyist myself with over 15 years of practice) which would universalize the animations to his variety of targets, remove the variable of Yandere Chan's weapon, and simplify the mechanic in general so that it could allow him to implement the feature more quickly while only requiring about 6 animations from me. My advise to do this was because, "Failures are things the player will try and avoid, so investing so much time and effort into a part of the game that the player's going to try and avoid may not be ideal." His response to me for that idea was to quote me saying that and then say, " I am very sorry, but I do not subscribe to this school of thought at all." After that point, I politely told him I had other work to worry about and wouldn't be working with him anymore. I could clearly see at this point that his game was going to flop and no amount of free labor on my end would fix that. BTW, I got an email from him recently (about 3 or 4 years after I stopped working from him) asking me to come back and help him. I never replied to it.

@Chiibea Thanks. I appreciate the support and sympathy. Concerning my comment, this is probably the first time I've mentioned it via a post somewhere. That said, I'm not too concerned with the whole event (I mean, it did happen many years ago) and the work that I did for YanDev was fairly simple. After all, I had a full-time animation job at the time, so I was never going to dedicate myself to him like I did to my workplace (especially since I wasn't being paid to work for him). Either way, I'm fine and I stopped working for him as soon as I was certain of my suspicions (being his abilities and the state of the game). I'm sure my story could make its way around online and that's fine, but I have no reason to spear-head some kind of reaction with it. That said, my sympathies do go out to all of the other artists and fans that have given him so much time, money, and effort in order to support him and this game. Honestly, after so many years of this, I'm surprised that he's still able to get any kind of support. I still have no idea of how he convinced Tiny Build to help him. They're great and talented people and they should've had enough collective experience amongst themselves to realize that, after talking to him, that becoming involved with his game would be a mistake.

Hello sir, quick q, I've only ever worked with flash and cheaped out with crappy tweening doing the alternative animation work for me (and also those old "fighting game creators" of the 90s), but wouldn't it be possible to tie animation variables to the weapons? Or is this a case of his narcissistic perfectionism and/or spaghetti code getting in the way of multiple superiour ways to do something faster? Like you only work on the very beginning and ending animations bit by bit and the engine (ought?) to fill in the blanks with those initial 9? I know that wouldn't be perfect/pro quality and might have a few glitches but it seems like you could bulldoze a bunch and then slowly tweak it on the side later on. Say a struggle with a knife vs screwdriver looking _almost_ the same except for the ending being a stab vs a cut. Or the sword vs a crowbar/pipe/shovel. (Like the difference in the struggle animation being the victim can't put a second hand on one, but on the others.) Basically I'm curious wtf his divine commandments were and how much 'freedom' (tho I can probably guess) you had in making these work. I could swear I've played something like this....Maybe the sopranos game? But I'm blanking on the exact one.
@Gav_EXE
@Gav_EXE 4 жыл бұрын
@@Poglavnit_Pferdefuhrer The variables that would determine which animation would be used were 1) The weapon Yandere Chan was hold and 2) The type of person she was struggling against (I believe they were things like Student, Teacher, Rival, Officer, etc). Many of these challengers had base models with differing proportions, so it made sense that the animations would have to be unique just to make sure that the models would line up to avoid interception (the geometry clipping through each other and stuff). However, you are correct. Some weapons, like a screwdriver or a knife, would likely share similar struggling animations since they were both small, one-handed weapons, so the only significant difference would be their ending animation (when Yandere Chan would kill her challenger). However, with the advent of 3D animation and programming, certain aspects of animation can be layered and partially adjusted to allow for certain elements to be changed live during gameplay. You've likely seen this when a character walks on a slope and they're feet adjust to match with the angle of the floor. This too is something we could have done to compensate for the differing proportions and limbs of the various challengers Yandere Chan would've struggled against, allowing us to unify all their animations even better and knock down the workload even further. Unfortunately, YanDev made it clear to me that he doesn't know how to do that. Anyway, when I was quoted saying, "Failures are things the player will try and avoid, so investing so much time and effort into a part of the game that the player's going to try and avoid may not be ideal." I was talking to YanDev about his suggested workload and how it inflated the animation total just to compensate for the player failing their QTE. If the player succeeded every QTE, only about 3 or 4 animations would be necessary. However, by having the characters looping back into their previous animation stages by failing the QTEs, the workload would easily double; not to mention that insisting every animation combination had to be unique was crazy. When I suggested my idea to him, I said it would be better to focus on a more universal approach to the animations and just work out getting the successful animations functioning first so that the basis of his mechanic was at least working. Doing so would both lighten our workloads and give him the most productivity for our time (I especially didn't want to give him almost 100 unique and complex animations when he'd told me previously that he expected all of the game's animations to be reworked closer to game's release. So, the idea of me breaking my back over so much work just to have it thrown away in the end wasn't very appealing). His response, in quoting me and giving a single sentence reply, was terribly rude and unprofessional and made it very clear to me that he had no interest in being productive. Edit: I will at least give YanDev credit for saying that I didn't have to do that huge load of work because I wasn't being paid for it, but he was still uncompromising in his idea for it in general. It was either he got what he wanted or no work was done.

Now that the recent allegations have come out, I've finally sat down to watch this video in full. It's a shame. It's such a shame that such a concept of a game had to be executed (or at least attempted to be) by someone who really isn't a good person at all. From his belligerent side to his stubborn side and now the grooming side, I think he's become the person TRO would call a cretin. He's allowed himself to spiral downward, and even with a video such as this, providing proper criticism and pointing out the tendencies that are absolutely destroying him AND his credibility, his nature has caused him to ignore all of it. With all the voice actors and even some of the most supportive KZbinrs of the game dropping it after the news. Even if you want to separate the art from the artist, the game's development is directly tied to YanDev and his reputation. He can't proceed if he can't get the voices, assets, art, etc that he needs. And he sure as hell ain't getting it easily now that he's ruined his reputation THIS much. @@doubleh333lixIn my opinion as a man i rarely see beauty as an external attribute. Yes there is a form of aesthetics beauty to “beautiful” people but that does not go beyond an small attraction and maybe some sexual attraction. That is but superficial and wears down fast. Beauty is often how people treat you. How they are as a person. When someone is genuinely a nice person to even people he will never have anything to with in his live like waiters/waitresses, employees or random people on the street that is just so much more attractive and overshadows any superficial beauty someone might have. Furthermore i think everyone has something attractive and beautiful about them if they genuinely care about their appearance.

On the bright side, Alex has become the example of everything not to do when making a game. Alex's incompetence has paved the way for future aspiring devs to not make the same blunders as him. Other than helping prevent these mistakes from being repeated, Alex has no redeeming qualities. He lacks work ethic, he is a control freak who has driven away any possible help from professionals, and he can't take criticism. It's disgusting how he's essentially scammed countless people out of money for a game that doesn't even have an official demo. Also, his "game" is constantly shooting itself in the foot. He spends so much time coming up with elimination methods for rivals and then gives the first rival and invincible bodyguard that trumps 90% of the methods of success. First. Fucking. Rival. Is the final rival gonna have a FUCKING ORBITAL STRIKE THAT FIRES THE MOMENT YOU PULL OUT A KNIFE?! Oh wait! There won't be a final rival considering Alex can't even finish the first one. There are so many indie devs that have done so much better than Alex in the time it's taken him to scam 11 year old girls out of money on Patreon, it's really sad. Toby Fox got noticed by goddamn Nintendo for his work! Do you know how much of an accomplishment that is? Oops! My bad! According to Alex's defenders "Undertale is SiMpLe!" and that somehow debunks the fact that Toby is still more dedicated than Alex will ever be. Yandere Sim will forever be remembered as an absolute joke and the example of what not to do as a dev. Can't wait for the second rival to come out in 2169!

I can name you some other devs that take their jobs more seriously than Joke Dev. Glowstick Entertainment: Dark Deception- a truly brilliant horror game with chilling enemies and unique game mechanics for each monster. Scott Cawthon: FNAF- the horror game franchise that put indie developers on the map. Is also a decent guy and has passion for his craft. KindlyBeast Games: Bendy and the Ink Machine & Showdown Bandit- These guys are awesome. Both exceptional games that despite their flaws look polished and have great concepts behind them. Otherworld Interactive: Hello Puppets- Despite its short runtime, HP is a great game that had heart put into it. You can tell they wanted to make it as enjoyable as possible. Also took advantage of the Oculus Rift’s controls and gameplay mechanics to enrich the game. Dynamic Pixels: Hello Neighbour- Great mechanics, good gameplay and a good story to boot. With the exception of FNAF, all of these other games were developed and released within the six years Alex has been “developing” his game for. All of the above were met with glowing reviews and eager reception, and have all amassed a cult following of some form or another. So really he can’t use the excuse “coding is hard”, as all of these games prove that anything is possible with a bit of dedication and perseverance- two qualities he clearly lacks.

I looked up for how long Toby Fox worked to complete Undertale. 2.7 years. For a 'simple' game. At least, Toby didn't work alone. Imagine if he did. :/ Also, Yandere Dev's defendants can't use that as an excuse when it is known that he decided to work alone with a 3d game, which are known to take more time than an RPG (unless Undertale is not an RPG.) If Yandere Dev worked with a team, then his game would be completed sooner. And that's sad. :(

Here lies the problem with his entire game and attitude, well put! You *always* finish the core functionality of a game first, so you at the very least have _something._ Adding the pandering fluff, such as: an entire dense meal of an Easter egg menu; pointless character arcs (Kokona) for the sake of giving his main advertisers (KZbinrs) stuff for fans to gawk at; and coding and animating everything around stolen assets only so things look pretty; will make it _extremely_ difficult to backtrack each and every one of these *6 years worth* of changes to add in the basic, barebones stuff. It's basic logic. As much as I hate to admit it, as I found this game through KZbinrs, I think the pressure to constantly appeal to the audience by giving them things to do has ruined the development from the very beginning. I don't place the blame on the KZbinrs though - they're just doing their job - but rather YandereDev, which should have not been tempted by quick riches and fame immediately, and stuck to the most basic rule of programming (never mind developing...)

Plot twist: "Yandere Simulator" is actually "Yandere *Dev* Simulator". It's obvious that "Senpai" is a self-insert, and that is why he is unwilling to take criticism or make major changes to the game. Rewatching this after the voice recordings coming out of him grooming a 16 year old really recontextualizes a lot of his decisions, in my opinion, particularly the decision to sustain a significant social media presence. As much as the criticism and drama does upset him, his most recent (known) victim (who should receive NO blame in this situation) *did* initiate contact with him due to being a fan of the game. How could he cut off such an easy opportunity to get children in his DMs? This whole situation makes me sick. At the very least, most of the game's volunteers have left the project entirely, its major KZbinrs have stopped promoting it, and partnered games have severed ties. I feel that he will only really give up, unfortunately, if his Patreon is taken down... one can hope.

He has autism, and autistic people sometimes have a bit of trouble emoting with their voice, so it ends up sounding robotic or bland. There is also the fact that we autistic people often simply can't hear how we sound to others, or we have a hard time controlling the pitch or tone of voice. A neurotypical person might accidentally say something that sounds sharp or harsh in the heat of the moment and regret it because they can 'hear' themselves, but for autistic people (at least in my case) it doesn't register, so unless it's pointed out it's like...walking down a familiar path. The act of speech, of projecting tone that dictates meaning, is not just a part of linguistics but interpersonal communication. We'll have the tone down, but sometimes forget about the emotional communication aspect.

As a person who also has autism, the yandera dev doesn't have a pass, because what he did was unacceptable, he knew what he was doing because of how high functioning he is, this means you can't pass it off as an autism thing, because autism isn't something you use to get out of trouble and when you know your in the wrong. You can't just explain it as " he just has a hard time communicating ". If you actually believe that, than it shows how you just use your autism as a tool when you make a mistake.

I actually feel really sorry for the artist that never got credited, imagine you see an opportunity to work with a game developer who you've admired since the beginning of the games creation, you finish the incredibly hard work that he dishes out to you, you don't expect a single penny from him in return, and you still get let down. I can't believe Yandere Dev thought he could just not credit a poor teen who put hours of their time into his needs just because his game is "early access"

Although she was changed to be a clingy little sister who just wanted her brother’s attention, she was originally supposed to be a promiscuous little sister with a “crush” on her big brother (Yan-dev had work arounds saying that she was actually his cousin who was adopted like what happened in the first season of SOA between the main character and his sister)

Hello! Game designer with directing experience here.This video was rather sobering, because this shows exactly what happens when you go against everything that I've been taught about games development. Allow me to explain, and I'm sorry if this drags on a bit... The first thing that I noticed that he seems to get wrong right away is "scale." Projects spearheaded and developed by just one person are few and far between for a reason, even fewer that come out as successful titles. Now, I might catch some flak for this but just because you can program doesn't mean you can make games. If we want to be hyper-literal about it then yes you could make a game, but it wouldn't be a good one. See, a game isn't just an idea you put onto an engine and have people play it. There's a lot more that goes into games development, and it is FAR more than "I have an idea and a story I want to tell" and you hop straight into engine. The first mistake Y.D makes here is... 1. He did not define his goals. To elaborate on this further, he specifically did not seem to have a hard end point. Before a game is even developed, a designer, director, producer, or whoever is presenting the idea will have to give a pitch to whoever he wants funding from or to his team, go over the core concepts of the game (in a powerpoint oftentimes) and define the larger goals for the game. Now, this is a random idea but let's say a designer wants to present a game that has the player using short distance teleports and a grappling hook to move around an environment at high speeds. What the designer would have to do is present this, justify it, and possibly even (if this is a designer going to a director/producer, or director to producer) come up with a proof of concept. The engine this is used for should also be presented in the opening argument. This proof of concept should be nothing more than grey blocks, and the core mechanics of the game. Just a functioning teleport, and a grappling hook. It doesn't need to be complete, it doesn't need to look fancy. All you need to do is show that it can be done. After that, the team will get together and they will brainstorm and discuss what they will do with that game. By about a week or so, the team should know exactly what they're doing with the game from beginning to end. This timeframe may change depending on schedule, team size or even amount of teams working on said project, but lets go with the low assumption for the sake of this point. The general story of the game should also be decided upon conceptually, and by the point development truly begins on the game the whole team should know exactly where their production begins, and how it will end. To do this, they need to define a goal, saying "once we have done this, then the game is done." Now I'm not including bug testing because half of the game's development could be spent just fixing smaller issues and bugs, but it's imperative to know where your end goal is. From the looks of it Y.D just kept adding and adding, deciding half way through development that he wanted X feature and Y feature added, which lead to an overscaled project. "Scale" in this sense means how big or complex a game is. For example, a team of 6 people will not be able to create the next Zelda game even in 10 years. However, they may be able to make games like Necrodancer, Necropolis, Helltaker, etc. Complex/complicated systems aren't always a good thing, and the best designers are the ones who do great things with simple concepts. 2. He got lazy. There really is no excuse for this. Now yes I do believe he should spend at least some time on those emails, but no more than about say, an hour a day. You don't need to open all of them, nor do you need to respond to all of them. If you are scared of tech issues, there are ways around it. His claim of spending 8-12 hours a day reading emails is bullshit and not even the good kind; it's just an excuse. If one of my programmers had told me that he was spending all his time on his emails and not doing the work I asked of him, he'd be dropped from the project. Now, you can't exactly fire yourself if you're the one making all the decisions, but you have to hold yourself to some sort of standard. I'm bad for procrastination too, and I'd consider myself lazy. However if you don't get the work done you will never, EVER see results. Do you want to just say "oh, it isn't happening because I'm lazy or because of X excuse," or do you want to push past your personally perceived flaws and actually make a product? Now I'm not going to comment on the horrendous things he has been saying to people, as that's a whole other rant on professionalism that I could make but nobody needs explaining. Moving on. 3. He let his pride get in the way. I've ranted on far enough, so this will be my final point. Now, at this point he's made a lot of money off of an unreleased game, and he's got a lot of people eager and willing to help. Eventually he went to go get help for his game, and when he got it he shut it down because it wasn't in line with how he likes things coded. Here's the thing, I'm not good with coding. I suck with it. I hate every time I have to take a glance at C# when I open Unity, and I much prefer Unreal Engine because I feel I have a solid grasp on blueprinting. However, do you remember when I said being a programmer doesn't make you a game designer? Well, this is where the programmers come in. The relationship between programmer and designer is that the designer comes over to the programmer with all their presented ideas for the game being developed, as well as any concepts that they think they could pull off. "Hey, do you think that when the player opens this door here a cutscene plays where we could have this trap go off and collapse the roof to create an obstacle in this part of the level?" If the programmer can do it often they'll say yes. Sometimes the designers will go to the lead, the lead to the director, and the director to the lead programmer, but I only have experience with small teams right now so I won't comment largely on that. Now, a part of working with other people is you get more perspectives, and no matter how smart you think you are there is always someone out there who knows something you don't. If someone has a solution that is better than yours, who do you think is going to make it further? The guy who pushes away this help, and keeps going down the same tired path that set his production on fire to start with, or do you entertain the idea and take notes? He fired the programmer provided by the publisher because his coding wasn't enough like his and didn't work with how he has coded the game, which by the way in C# within Unity Engine, isn't a hard thing to overhaul to even student programmers (specifically programming specialists, not designers who had to learn programming like myself for a class.) As such he screwed over his deal with the publishers, and honestly he's just eating himself alive. That's all I should say given that I basically just wrote an essay and become the epitome of procrastination for my own work. I didn't ever know a whole lot about the Y.D development, but hearing all this kind of irked me, so I felt impassioned enough to write this with the hopes that someone might get a little more insight into what NOT to do for game design. Game design isn't easy folks, that's why G.D.D's exist (Game Design Documents) that clearly outline goals, and it's why a lot of games get release dates once they reach their late beta/alpha stages. The only reason a lot of games get delayed is because of bugs, which often show themselves after alpha and playtesting. Hope this gives some insight. GLHF everyone! Edit: Just a bit on budget vs scale, the scale of the game is often determined first, and then you propose a budget for the game. That's when the producer comes in with a yes/no regarding whether it can happen, but you have to tell them the time frame first. Just because you get more money AFTER you start development, doesn't mean you need to suddenly increase the game's scale. That will just throw the entire game off track and eventually you get this over-scaled mess that will never see completion because Y.D attempted to add too many features that will never ever get the polish they need, paired with poor attitudes and motivation means that the game will never be done. For anyone reading this who is ever scared of over=scaling, just follow K.I.S.S, it's my favourite thing to tell myself if I feel like we're going over our heads a little: Keep It Simple, Stupid. Again, simple doesn't always mean bad and complex doesn't always mean good. Necrodancer and Helltaker managed to do a lot with just simple movement mechanics, Cuphead mechanically is just a contra styled game (though my god they went HAM with the animation,) and mechanically can be recreated easily. Start small, and consider other additions to be stretch goals. Want to do a metroidvania, and want to have three characters? Complete development on the first character's story and plot, and actually have it built and in alpha. If you have plenty of time to spare, go ahead and do the second, but make 100% sure the quality is consistent. People may not notice something looking amazing in a sea of good looking things, but they'll always notice something looking like trash in a sea of good looking things. This is why people really focused on the N64 trees in Pokemon S&S. The whole game could have looked top tier, but just the look of those trees put everything off. That's why sometimes just saying "good enough" works so long as you can keep the same kind of quality throughout. However I'm already ranting on far too long again, so GLHF and have a good one, everyone!

I agree, especially 1st and 3rd points. This is also problem with Star Citizen: the project has taken 250 million dollars and more and after 6 years. While many people call it an epic scam, I just think that Star Citizen is grossly mismanaged and suffers from lack of leadership. There just isn't a guy or gal there who draws the line on the sand and says "All right, this is as far as we go. You have other improvements or features? Save it to add-ons, DLC's and updates". Rather Star Citizen just piles idea upon idea and comes overburdened to the point is justified to ask will it ever come out. Many people point that lead of the project Chris Roberts isn't really a first timer, so he should've accounted all that and accuse he is running a long con. But people also conveniently forget that Roberts's last game was published in 2003 game Star lancer. He was out of the business for a long time and large scale game development isn't as it used to be. Him getting overwhelmed is not so inconcievable. Don't forget that reason why Duke Nukem Forever was delayed so long was because of George Broussard's inflexibility. Yandere Dev suffers from all of these plus bad interactions with fans. He has a good idea that is worthy of a game, but his means are severyly lacking. On top of that, he seems to be incabable of asking outside help because he absolutely doesn't want to "mar" his vision in favor of game coding. He could be actually a decent game desingner but his inablity to compromise anything is what shoots himself in the foot. Also he isn't doing any favors to himself by communicating like a patronizing prick.
