I would like to agree with you, but we tend to forget the "not so innocent" things in the 60's. I was there. It wasn't so innocent for our black brothers and sisters in the south during the race riots during the civil rights movement. It also wasn't so innocent for the young Vietnam vets who lost their lives for a pointless war. And it wasn't so innocent watching JFK, RFK, Malcom X, and Martin Luther King Jr. get assassinated. But at least we had our incredible music.

@@bobblowhard8823 The times weren’t so innocent, I was thinking along the same lines as you. I suspect that some of us feel that way because we were too young to really know better even though many of us fought and protested against the many heavy issues of the day - and I think people just generally look back at their youth and see innocence because we REALLY DO know better now.

The story goes the producers were putting pressure on them to come up with another hit. The lead singer, Howard Kaylan, got disgusted and wrote this song as sarcastic joke toward the producers. But they said "YES! That's it! Put it on wax! It's a hit." using hackneyed rhymes like groovy and movie, and phrases like "your parents hate me," or "They'll turn the lights way down low, maybe we won't watch the show..." an old fashioned name like Eleanor {Roosevelt?} and he think she's "swell.." an old term from the 1930's and 40's in the USA....it was all meant to be sarcastic. If you don;t believe find the interview with Howard done years ago.
@MisterWondrous
@MisterWondrous Жыл бұрын
Did not know the backstory, but thanks that is great. They were genius. I was attributing their use of "etcetera", "pride and joy" and "swell" to a generalized insouciance, not unlike that of Peter Cook in Bedazzled, although not coming on quite so heavy with it. The song shifted attitudes.

They had a lot of great songs such as "It Ain't Me Babe", "Let Me Be", "You Baby", "Grim Reaper Of Love", "Can I Get To Know You Better", "She'd Rather Be With Me", "You Know What I Mean", "She's My Girl", "You Showed Me" etc.

From The Turtles, " Battle of the Bands" album from 1968., Elenore was written to appease their record company, White Whale Label. They kept bugging The Turtles for another big hit like Happy Together. They had wanted to expand their sound but wrote this to keep the company happy. It was one of the first pop songs to use the Moog synthesizer. It charted Number 7 in the UK, Number 6 in the US and Number 4 in Canada. Great vocals, romantic lyrics and a memorable melody made this song so beautiful with great instrumentation. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Daniel. 👏👏 So groovy. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

There's so much history around this band. Howard Kaylan's voice was the envy of many rock singers. If you want to watch a really funny semibiographical story watch the movie "Dinner with Jimmy" about their first visit to the UK, meeting the Beatles, Jimmy Hendrix and others. And then there's the transformation of Mark Vollman and Howard into the Flourescent Leech and Eddie duet act and their collaboration and touring with Zappa and The Mothers
