Another episode that wasn’t banned, but caused a lot of complaints, was the one where one of the Tweenies put a mop on their head and did a Jimmy Savile impression. It was first broadcast before the Savile scandal, but was later repeated AFTER Operation Yewtree. Whoever authorised the broadcast probably hadn’t even watched the episode all the way through so it was an innocent mistake, but a lot of complaints were made by angry parents - rightly so.

@@elio7610 The BBC were never shy from flogging their old children’s shows to death. My youngest child was watching re-runs of episodes of Balamory that my eldest child watched at the same age 9 years before and my eldest children were watching episodes of Come Outside that were made 15 years previously. Even when I was a child in the late 70s through to the early/mid 80s a large percentage of the shows I was watching were really old - Bagpuss was a popular program made in 1974 but still being shown well into the 80s. Likewise Mr Benn and Finger Bobs were being shown for over a decade. We also still got Camberwick Green in the early 80s, and that was made in 1966! This still happens now. Some of my kids watched ‘In The Night Garden’ when it first came out in 2008 and I understand they’re still repeating the same episodes now on 2024. I think the BBC may have felt, and still feel, that kids programs don’t justify the same budget as adult shows and therefore don’t make as many new ones. Kids outgrow these shows quite quickly so they probably want to get their money’s worth by repeating them ad nausea to as many new successive generations of pre-schoolers as they can before the shows become too dated.

Former teaching assistant chiming in: Leaving a knife just lying there unattended in a kids' playgroup like that would be a MASSIVE safeguarding issue, not to mention leaving a CHILD alone. If a kid finds that and hurts themselves, it is 100% the adult's fault, and also vicariously the provider's, because you shouldn't have left it out in the first place. So there's no doubt that Judy's shocked, since the blame is on her.

Be Safe with the Tweenies. More like, Be Negligent Muppets with Max and Judy. In another episode, Judy walks away from a birthday cake with a candle still lit on it and leaves the kids unsupervised around it...the kids try to light a scented candle from said lit birthday candle and it's a miracle none of them got burnt or set the whole playgroup on fire. Another one where the kids are left unsupervised and Fizz wanders into the kitchen and gets bottles of bleach out the cupboard. One where the kids are left with electrical appliances and it's BELLA who has to tell the younger Tweenies not to play with them. There's ANOTHER one where Max goes out in the shed and leaves the kids unsupervised inside. Milo gets himself stuck through the window, and Bella goes to run out the front door. But it's the KIDS who get told off. And they're like, 4 or 5.

@RubyBlueUwU
@RubyBlueUwU 7 ай бұрын
Yeah, like, these kids are really young, the fact the kitchen was there, unlocked, walked into casually by Jake implying it’s not an unusual thing and isn’t considered off limits to them, and yet one of these care staff left that huge ass knife out in the middle of the room within reach of all these kids and THAT somehow isn’t the point here is insane. It would’ve made more sense if he’d commented that he doesn’t usually go in the kitchen or how it’s usually locked, maybe set up something going wrong that distracted whoever was chopping and resulted in the knife being abandoned and the door being unlocked, and Jake going in despite knowing he wasn’t allowed…but as it stands the real issue is them not keeping the knives out of reach of these children. It would’ve been slightly better if they’d just found the thing outside cool cat style than basically implying this place is completely incompetent and then blaming Jake lmao.

@Vision Don't you worry. Justin's done several obscure voice roles as well - he did all the vocal effects for the characters in the 2000 video game "Frogger 2: Swampy's Revenge", or at least as far as I am aware. You can get a bit of his Doodles voice in Swampy the Crocodile's voice, so I do suspect it is indeed him. He also did voice roles in Legoland (an old PC game similar to RollerCoaster Tycoon, based on the Legoland parks) and also in the first incarnation of that Thomas & Friends arena show, where he voiced Harold the Helicopter.,

My first memories of Justin Fletcher was on a show called Tikkabilla (apparently named after the Hindi word for Hopscotch) - essentially a spiritual successor to the older BBC edutainment show Play School, which ran from 1964 to 1988. On Tikkabilla, Fletcher was one of a rotating cast of hosts (that also included the likes of Simon Davies, Lorna Laidlaw and Beverly Hills) along with a hand-puppet dragon called Tamba. Additionally, he co-starred in the in-show mime shorts Higgledy House alongside co-presenter Sarah-Jane Honeywell.

@@morshu.4158 Honestly, I wish I knew. It’s been years since I saw those episodes aired; as my niece was about 5 & her brother was 2 (roughly 2002). I only know the episode was later banned, as they apparently thought kids would be scared of it! 🤦‍♀️😂

The Tweenies definitely had some interesting episodes… There were definitely some wild episodes about things like pinching, getting old, becoming an older sibling (this one specifically was a storyline which spanned across like 4 or 5 episodes) and last but certainly not least, racism.

Some random realizations I had watching this video: - As a child, I was convinced The Tweenies spanned years, instead of just 26 episodes and also that they were at least an hour, not 5 minutes. Shows you how slow time is as a kid LOL. - I also assumed that they all lived together and were related, I DID NOT CLICK THAT IT WAS A PLAYGROUP. I also seemed to have no comprehension of their ages in comparison to mine, like they all seem giant, what do you mean they are TODDLERS? Like, I know obviously they would be, but as a kid, they just seemed like "big kids" to me. - I don't remember Doodles talking, but that's just a foggy memory. This is so dark but unintentionally hilarious. Thanks for the trip down memory lane! "KNIVES!" LMAOOO.

A very difficult lesson to teach, but an important one. I remember my mother teaching me how to keep younger children safe around the house - one of the things was not to let them access the knives in the kitchen. I was getting to be quite a good cook by the time I was 12, but it was important to know how to keep yourself and others safe. If you wanted to take the children's TV characters of the day and teach this lesson, then it would be difficult to find an acceptable way to do it. I have to congratulate the producers for at least trying, even though the result was unfit for use.
