That moment with the Iron Golem at 4:36 is a great example of the type of horror that I think a lot of mods are missing. It's something normal and benign. It's not attacking you. It's not loud or in your face. But turning and immediately knowing something is horribly wrong with what you're seeing - that's a type of fear I don't think many of these mods have captured. That sense of dread and the feeling that something bad, something unknown, is going to happen is far more effective in the long-term than the loud music, screams and other things meant to startle you. Man from the Fog is still my personal favorite of all the mobs in this series, but that Iron Golem's presence in this video is fantastic. Great work, Calvin.

@@DarkDashV6One who watches still uses the basic ass default walk animation and from what I have seen cannot even turn his head. His model is an SCP-096 ripoff with generic spooky voice lines. He is super intrusive which ruins all surprise value, and his AI is basically on the same level as a normal hostile mob. Steve Dweller’s design is fairly well made with decent animations as well. He only shows up semi frequently and he has other unsettling behaviors like door knocking and mining sounds in caves before he shows up. He also inherits the capabilities of the OG cave dweller like climbing and crawling which is a step above The One who Watches. He shines the most when paired with a Herobrine mod like in Calvin’s series as he could easily be imagined as Herobrine going full hostile on you.

I think I figured it out. I know why we all love this series and Calvin so much. Probably for the majority of the veteran minecraft community it makes us feel like kids again. It’s like watching captain sparkles survival play through, TDM mods, yogscast israphel, etc for the first time. It’s like 2011-2014 in 2024. We’re all grown now, but this is the kind of nostalgia with a hint of new mature horror we can enjoy.

i think it's also because it's not entirely off the cuff, there are some preplanned parts (backrooms, lost cities, etc), but they're so good at conveying a sort of narrative within the series yet it still doesn't feel like it's being read off a script. i remember there were loads of preplanned moments in some old iballisticsquid series', and they added so much depth while still remaining natural and authentic; this series replicates that feeling perfectly. this shit is an art fr

The thing I love the most about this series is that Calvin sees and/or acts towards the dwellers as if they where entities rather than mobs, it truly feels as if he lived in a haunted house and he was aware of the ghosts there is and acknowledges them but doesn't let himself be terrified of them so he plays the game as if it was a normal world and has this "I'm not scared or you" but is scared anyways attitude and I love it.
