This is a Japanese version of suicide by cop and extreme dissociation. I was stationed with the Navy on Kyushu in the 1990s and used to make monthly trips to Fukuoka which is a great town. It's so sad that this young man saw no other way out. But it is a credit to the Tokyo first responders that no one died. Very excellent episode, and I'm going to talk to your sponsor now. 😁

As a Japanology student, next year going to Japan I often find that I have a more positive view about Japan and a rather negative one on my own country. I like that Adrian often covers japan and mentions the usually low crime rates in the country, it's that touch of reality that no country in the world is a totally safe place. It just shows that we as society are failing at keeping everyone on a good path, it is quite negative, but also positive to think that no country is that much better than the other, all nations have flaws and cracks.

The reason why all the phones in Japan make a loud noise when taking pictures is due to the fact that there were incidents in the past where people were photographed without their consent. And Japanese do not like strangers taking pictures of them without their permission. And also the case of voyeurism was an issue in the past. I was stationed there for three years. It’s a beautiful country.
@Libellulaire
@Libellulaire 9 ай бұрын
Rather than "taking (innocent) picture without consent" it's more due to the huge amount of predatory pictures taken of females, including minors. Even in the West it's not uncommon for men to take pictures of women when they're climbing stairs or while taking public transit, in Japan (in Asia in general) it's even more common. Probably partially due to the fact that both in work and school uniforms skirts are mandatory.
@sleepymonsteraddict
@sleepymonsteraddict 9 ай бұрын
I wouldn't say it's fully a problem of the past, but it is safe to say it's not that big of a problem anymore. The shutter sound is indeed something that I wouldn't just link to voyeurism but indeed more to let people know that a picture is being taken. Just like any country in the world Japan has it problems and it always will have, but as someone who studies Japanese, I will never stop looking up to this nation for their level of respect and hospitality.

I'm very glad no one got hurt, and as crazy as this is going to make me sound, it's still the truth. Due to the rather traumatic experiences I have had in my childhood, I understand that level of nihilism. I've never tried to do anything to anyone else. Everything has always been aimed at myself because of the level of self loathing I feel sometimes, but I really do understand what it's like to be where he was. No future. No hope for one. The feeling that no matter what you do or how you do it, literally everything eventually blows up in your face. It doesn't take very long before one starts to feel rather worthless and irredeemable. I just wish more people could be like me, and get over the stigma that comes along with being a man who needs help with his mental health. You absolutely can be a "man" about it AND still feel and properly express your emotions in a safe and healthy way. I just wish more people understood that. Please, if you need help, talk to someone who you know you are able to trust. And while I know this is fairly useless in a KZbin comment, but I'll be there for you if you feel like you can't go to someone you know because you're afraid of being judged or dismissed. I would never do that to anyone who truly needed help.

Happy Halloween Adrian. Just wanted to point out that there is trick and treating here in Tokyo tho mostly for kids. I live near Shibuya and every year the kids in the neighborhood trick and treat for 4 hours on a designated day (usually on. Saturday) the whole event is organized with the participation of residential buildings, houses and businesses around the neighborhood. Each year we get around 700 kids coming around our building. The kids’ route has been mapped out and there are about 40 stops for the kids to show off their costumes and get treats. Houses, businesses and buildings are all decked out with themed decorations of their choice. Last year we did, Stranger Things, this year we chose Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It’s always a fun, loud and a happy affair. We love it!

I actually read an article a few months ago about the phenomena of people committing terrible crimes specifically to seek out the death penalty. It has happened in many different countries, and apparently the only thing that stops people from doing that is to simply abolish capital punishment.

So glad that nobody died! Still, I feel for the people that were there and were traumatized by the attack, must have been absolutely horrifying to go through! I just don't understand how anyone can plan to try to kill/injure people that you don't even know like this! I know what it's like to want to die, but why would you want to kill innocent people to try to achieve death for yourself?

I've been listening to your videos for over a year now, and this has quickly become my favorite crime channel. Not only do you base your videos around the victim, but your voice is very calming, and I really appreciate you leaving out the sexual assault details. ❤ However, I don't think I'll be watching your videos on Halloween, otherwise you'll probably tell people to force me (a woman with mental illnesses brought on by generations of abusive mothers and thus unable to work) have a baby lol 😂

I wrote an essay once on the Kübler - Ross model, and while not perfect, it can explain the behaviour of a lot of people going through a recent loss. Some never make it out of the fourth stage.

He’s probably learning the real meaning of being depressed now that he’s in prison. I’ve heard Japanese prisons can be very rough. Glad he didn’t kill anyone, and also that his stabbing victim has fully recovered.

I'm glad to have a case like this once in a while, even though Kyota had intentions to kill and showed no compassion, his execution showed low determination to kill people and it is clear that this crime was more committed out of pain and mental problems rather than out of hate. With a lot of the cases I feel like the people involved should never be released and if they are they'd still be bad people, based off the hate motive a lot of killers have, but with Kyota I feel like the judge words are hopeful and realistic, he could very well get over his mental baggage and try to reintegrate into society. His life won't be easy given the trauma caused in such a big city, but this case seems to be leaning towards an all positive ending, which I like.

I don’t blame him for what he did, life can be a struggle once you are an adult and sometimes you lose yourself as time goes by. I find it hard to believe how I’m still sane to this very day, as I’ve dealt with terrible things within my past as well. Sometimes, you just need to walk it off, freeze yourself away from this world, and harden your resolve. Life doesn’t get any easier, it never really does.
