That TV show is legit. It manages to integrate so many aspects of lore into a coherent world and plot it's insane. Characters are pretty well written and Sweet Tooth in particular feels like a perfect blend of every incarnation. Sheer insanity with murderous rage and a gleeful attitude when killing.

Just saw the tv show. It was actually really good, and the amount of easter eggs that were in the show is an indicator the people involved with the project actually care. Not sure if the trailers really did it justice. Hell I would not be surprised if some of the actors were as young as we were when we first played this game and probably actually played the games or at the very least read into all the back story stuff. Even then the content creators managed to keep it fresh, and actually made a setting where something like Twisted Metal could be almost believable, which is just a really hard thing to do. Yet, they made it work and found myself attached to the characters in every episode. The main actors you could tell were having a blast with their roles, and they actually seemed to give their characters the same level of gravity (and cheese) that you expect out of the cartoonesque characters from the earlier games in the genre. DO NOT READ PASSED THIS POINT IF YOU HATE SPOILERS . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . SPOILERS HERE (DO NOT READ AND GET ANGRY AT ME IF YOU READ): I am going to sound a little defensive here, but that is because I too was one of the people that was not sure if this was going to be good or not, and now I have done a complete 180. Boy howdy was I wrong in thinking the show would be bad. The entire first season is basically background stories in preparation for the actual twisted metal tournament that Calypso will be hosting. I was not expecting to enjoy the characters in the way that I did, but I was hit by nostalgia multiple times all throughout the episodes. The big thing I kept in the back of my mind: only true Twisted Metal fans will love this. However, even the non-acolytes have enough their to enjoy and immerse themselves into. If you are a critic of it, that is fine, but if you are not watching that show for just at minimum enjoy the sheer Twisted Metal cheese then your opinion is essentially watered down to being pointless. Let me tell yeah I geeked out at the reveal of the characters (mostly from either Twisted Metal 1 and 2 with other mentions). The wrestler and the voice actor that did Sweet Tooth DID A PHENOMENAL JOB, also he had LAUGHING MISSILES in the final battle of Season 1, I had a grin that could match that crazy clown when he lit his head on fire and shot LAUGHING MISSILES at the other cars. The reveal of Road Kill was great and made sense. The implementation of Outlaw (or in this case Outlaws) actually fit in well with the story setting they established. Darkside (sorta), Preacher (actor did great here too), Raven, Flower Power, Gramma, Stu (FREAKING STU), and other characters make an appearance. I will go ahead and say it: anyone that dislikes the show are the same type of people that would criticize the new Godzilla movies because its not Shakespeare or something (yes those reviews exist). Remember: this show was made for the fans, and in my humblest of opinions they did an all around really good job.

Just watched the entire show too and the most important thing is that, as the game goes, it should not be taken extra seriously, it's good silly fun and between that you have interesting things to look up to and enjoy. That's it. The show doesn't take itself seriously and that goes a long way for the watcher enjoyment. I barely remembered a lot of details of the games, ages since I played them, and still felt recognizeable. Also, it's well put how to fit such a premise into a series, I mean, the premise of the games is not a big literature fancy thing, and adapting that went really well. I know we often shit on things on, TV and so on, but this time a good healthy enjoyment with the brain turned off is the way to go

@@Trash-N-Treasure ever consider the fact that a Twisted Metal "Multiverse" MUST exist more or less due to the fact that loser of Twisted Metal die. So if you entered twice, youve won at least once. Meaning the multiverse theory is really the only valid theory & that characters are where continuity comes from, NOT the game itself. Just a thought wink wink lol. Depending on who you play as, thats the continuity, thats who won last year or didnt enter ever before if they're new (like ATV). AGAIN, JUST A THOUGHT! Calypso having multiversal power isn't out of the question, like at all really. He could be the Rick Sanchez of Twisted Metal, having a Multiverse revolve around him & his power. @moo-snuckle I like this idea, but I'll do you one better. As much as I don't like how they downplayed the story in the reboot, what if that universe was secretly the hub for all of the TM universes and it's version of Calypso is actually The Devil. They play around with it in almost every other game, but what if he actually is the big bad who is aware of the other universes. He waits for people to die in other universes and stores them in his version of Hell until he decides who to use and how to use them in his own tournament. If they win, he reincarnates them back into their universe, completely unaware of what happened or that they died before. The other Calypsos would be ok with it because it keeps their tournaments full of participants every year. It also offers an explanation as to all of the artifacts in his trophy case and could even explain why he only has a few key participants in the tourny; he "books" the ones that would entertain him the most. As for other Calypsos (like the one from the main timeline trying to take out Calypso from Black) they are basically left to their own desires or fates (like TM4 Calypso losing control to Sweet Tooth). I hate TM3 Calypso and his lack of originality or insistence on dick moves when granting wishes, but you could even retcon him to be aware of this multiverse, so he blatantly acts like an ass to the contestants because he knows the bigger picture and, ultimately, nothing he does will have repercussions.

Just finish the first season of the show. I really liked it, it doesn't take itself too serious. I think the alternative would be too up it's own ass to be dark and edgy. The show is a good balance of the tongue and cheek humor in the games and the gory nature of the games. I hope they make more seasons!

A lot of people who didn't like it mention a darker tone was missing, and usually will refer to Black or even 2012. Which I fully agree, would be way to cheesy/edgelord. Black was a product of its time, and 2012... was 2012. That said, I really didn't like the show and found it insulting-levels of quippy-style humor. I didn't need Bill Hicks level of joke writing or anything, but the entire show was pun-level, and it had the reverse effect of making things to edgy by taking a lot of the impact away from scenes. And as far as "gory nature", there was 7 minutes of car combat in 5 hours of show based off a car combat series, and then maybe 15 minutes of fighting/gun play beyond that. I felt it was devoid of any action, and was child like in presentation. Not helped by the fact that I have no interest in the love plot (the true major storyline) because I find both participants in it to be terribly unlikeable. They can make more seasons, upon more seasons; and they should as people really seemed to like the show. But I will be takin' a pass on it. I tentatively wait to be disappointed by the new game when it comes out, which... - started production pre-show - is being made solely by Sony again without Jaffe and Campbell - already was taken away from 1 studio - will most likely try to replicate the show in some way since the show was a success (can't wait for Days Gone with a car and holymen instead of bikes and zombies) Only potential positive I give the game is it is being directed by the same guy who directed Motorstorm. Which as long as it wasn't just Motorstorm: Apocalypse (which was awful) could potentially be solid.

I just got done watching the new TV series and it was quite awesome and acted as an homage to the game series and acted as a season to generally build up the world, its characters and the story it's going to tell in future iteration of the show. I was giddy as hell in the finale and I can't wait til everything starts coming together in season 2.

There's 4 character artist I believe then only one "illustrator" so based on there being two seperate titles I think it was Darrin that specifically did the characters within cutscenes. Technically you could argue Outlaw won the first and second tournaments in their games. Since Sgt. Roberts wish from the first game canonically came true and his sister, Captain Roberts, whole thing in TM2 was to save him and to complete his mission to end the Twisted Metal tournament. And in Head-On, which you admit to being canon to series, both Cpt and Sgt Roberts co-drive Outlaw. Meaning Cpt won the second twisted metal. I too like Darkside. The Dollface character is my favorite in the series. And Black is a super cool anti-villain. Great video man

It’s honestly pretty smart, to make the world of twisted metal reflect around a character’s perspective. Silent Hill did much the same and it left future writing teams…sometimes a little too much room to expand the silent hill universe. The way you explained everything means that future games can easily be written from the perspectives of any of the 13+ drivers on top of the many established personalities of “sweet tooth”. Coming back as Incognito games was definitely the play to preserve the TM legacy.

@@Trash-N-Treasure yeah but the only problem with that is it doesn’t seem like sweet tooth in the TV show is like the sweet tooth in your timeline explanation where he’s more ominous with a dead set goal of swapping places with calypso he just seems like he’s more of a Deadpool type where he’s more for the comedic aspect than a serious down to earth level of both the perfect balance of goofiness but seriousness. To top that off I do have a theory that what if Mr. Ash is an alternative version of Marcus Kane and sweet tooth mixed together from another reality or some thing like an anti-version of them where there is a calypso who is more of a heavenly beings who wanted to kill the calypso in the story that we’re focusing on maybe because of the fact that a needles cane controlled calypso is probably too dangerous for all forms of reality given what we saw inside of his head that’s probably what he chose to make the world and maybe that’s what he actually made the world at the end of the series of head on making head on a prequel and cold Harbor and Black a sequel. maybe I got my timelines mixed up on that but it could be the case which is why we don’t see them mentioned in head on as in this new reality sweet tooth has already succeeded and Marcus may have regretted it ever since. everybody still playing the rules but Marcus is taking on a different role as not to be snuffed out as a personality for betraying sweet tooth and it’ll also explain why he can kill calypso at any time and why he didn’t take his advice when telling him about killing again would bring the curse back in other words Marcus could’ve been controlling that form of calypso at the time and by killing him Marcus probably was freed and took the appearance of minion or this is a different calypso from another timeline who basically created his version of Sweet tooth and Marcus to be separate well those two basically are somewhat of a necessary evil balancing act personality. So if there was ever a sequel it would be trying to stop calypso tooth or a calypso kane by bringing an end to his false reality by helping minion help write the wrongs of this reality anyways not to get too worried but this is just food for thought on how a sequel could play out but there’s a number of ways you can do it without fucking it up

@@Trash-N-Treasure another thing to needles and calypso do seem to be intertwined more ways than one other than just now one taking over the others body and the other getting killed. Given that there’s very much parallels to their lives the only differences is that due to Marcus being in the way that’s the only soul difference and calypso does have a good version of himself out there too but we don’t know too much about him like we do Marcus but ignoring those two for a second both seem to have A fond enjoyment for hurting other people and racing both also seem to be very blood busted and crazed to the point where they only get enjoyment when they’re basically riding on the race tracks and seeing others die for the sake of a greater purpose which both had to usurp power from some hire figure that was in their life calypso usurping minions power and Sweet tooth usurping calypsos power. So pretty much them fusing together or calypso being sweet tooth and vice versa was always destined to happen through a bunch of Similarities and hints throughout the series both of them have younger siblings and troubled fathers as well as questionable childhoods however The only question is where do we go now.

If i recall correctly,the newest game shows a cinematic that shows calypsos tower in hell, so maybe they are all in hell,and every so often he gives a chosen few a chance to break the cycle of tournament every so often,and then plays as your saying. Ive been on a TM lore kick all day for some reason, and strangely i feel like in a certain way the ambiguity and inconsistencies throughout the series uniquely allows it to be more intriguing speculation, and yet it still has enough cohesion that its super compelling at the same time.i haven't seen plotholes and vagueness ever play to a series advantage like this one seems to that i can recall. Who would have thought a demolition car battle game could get so Deep after all this time lol

If I was a demon running the Twisted Metal games, I'd never want them to end. The fun is the chaos and destruction. It gives a way for the studio to write out the less well recieved characters. I got twisted metal two and three for Christmas. When I was a kid I didn't know much about discs. It was a new time for all this. I grew up with VHS tapes and cassette tapes. One day I put the video game in the CD player and Rob zombie songs started playing every Rob zombie track that was on that game would play in my CD player😂

I loved these games as a kid, especially 2 and 3. Also enjoyed 4 and Black, and really didn't put too much thought into the Continuity. To me, I guess my head canon was that each game was sort of a mindfucked soft reboot, and with the mental hospital story lines it kinda just made sense within the context. Something else I enjoyed was being able to put the 3rd game (maybe others?) into a cd player and getting basically a Rob Zombie and friends soundtrack while driving.

Each Character has their own continuity Its not by game...but by character. Because if you lose Twisted Metal...canonically you die. So yeah. Continuity goes with the Character you choose not the game. I wish these KZbinrs could understand that. Amazing video! While I agree 3 and 4 were the low points and add nothing to canon they can be fun. I mean Rob Zombie was a playable character in 4 come on. Small Brawl proves that TM can still be fun while not taking itself seriously. TM4 especially had solid gameplay and the twist of Sweet Tooth dethroning Calypso and him ultimately becoming a competitor was pretty clever. But don't get it twisted (Pun intended?) Black will always be the GOAT.

Also it would make sense that he does have soul manipulation powers like Shang Tsung as well as memory manipulation that way most of the drivers can go on without the need of worrying about them dying and skipping over most of the mental breakage as they’ll probably need it for the tournament and not to the point where they can’t participate. A death race is no good if most of your drivers who died in the previous tournament and came back and remembered that they died who go through the traumatic experience of remembering it to where they don’t wanna participate anymore do you want to get them back in so erasing their death from their minds it’s probably a good way to keep them in an instant cycle of trying to get that wish

Wow, I’m quite surprised that you don’t enjoy 3 or 4. Personally, I find all the games in the series enjoyable except for two of them, which I agree with you on. Small Brawl and the latest update in 2020 just don’t feel right compared to the other games in the series. It’s almost as if they don’t fit in with the rest of the series. Despite those two exceptions, I think all the other games are great and provide a fantastic gaming experience.

While I was definitely being a touch hyperbolic, it's true I don't like playing them. The cars feel a touch to fast and floaty (explosions send them flying) and the creative team just really dropped the ball. The games' cutscenes are ugly in my opinion, the characters are borderline insulting with how one-note they are (Meter Maid, Drag Queen, Rob Zombie, Mr. Grimm NOT on a bike, etc.) While they ARE good enough to play compared to games like Vigilante 8, Hard Truck Apocalypse, Rogue Trip, etc. I don't like that they carry the Twisted Metal name. Atleast with Small Brawl being a childish game, it's just a side game. 3 and 4 are considered main series entries.

I agree that the games had some ugly scenes and cut scenes. However, when I played them, I didn’t have a problem with parts three and four. In my opinion, they were very fun games and I still think so to this day. There could have been some improvements, but it was funny to see cars flying through the air after laying a landmine. At first, I was confused when it happened because I was waiting for them to teleport through a portal. But when I hit the detonate button and the person flew off the map and died, I couldn’t help but laugh. It’s pretty cheap, but also funny. There’s no competitive play to the point where it really matters because you’re just fighting against AI and speedrunning through the game. The main reason I liked part four was because you could play as the bosses. They were really overpowered - you could just go Sweet Tooth or Moon Buggy and spam your specials. It was quite ridiculous. The reason I liked part three was because I didn’t feel alone. You could have an AI fight with you. It was kind of sloppy, but the game still felt fun and that’s all that matters in the end of the day for me. Other people might see it differently and find it disappointing, but for me it was quite fun. I still have the games today.

So I totally know that feel. As far as bosses, I don't know many in the series that you CAN'T play as; but that said, still know the joy of playing as them that you speak of. David Jaffe himself is quoted saying "....[in and of themselves] they're good games, they're just not good Twisted Metal games" And that's like a watered-down version of my opinion. I find them to be average car combat games, and absolute abysmal Twisted Metal games haha

You made me think of a possible story to solve the death thing. Maybe the first movie could be set up like its real so that people can get killed off. The second movie, the racers know they are stuck in this torture dream reality and finally break free. The final movie could be a real life race finally. Of course tying in the satan soul selling plot line haha. The show looks horrible. Twisted Metals humor is more surreal and violent like the movie “Natural Born Killers”. Tho that also doesnt mean its a comedy. They already had the cop story and the daughter that explodes killing calypso. heres another version of Twisted Metal movie or show. Exactly what i just said with the cop story line. That way its a bit more grounded and the super natural element of hell well reveal itself towards the end. The world is on the verge of an apocalypse. Even the 2nd game said “this years tournament will be the world”. Even trying to follow the games would involve creativity so why dont they do that? Because that makes it their own anyway.

I like that the whole first season was setting up the world characters and the tournament so that when season 2 comes they can just go all out balls to the wall. Kinda similar to the MK movie reboot being the set up and world building so the sequel can go more into the actual MK tournament

Black is my all time favorite. Wouldn’t want the main show to go that rout though… I think the intro from TM4 is the BEST Twisted Metal content of all time! But that’s it.. I love some of the art style and auto spheres and direction of 4 and I love the level locations and color palette of TM 3. TM2 is just so magical to me. But the story/stories, atmosphere, art style, hidden locations for characters, attention to detail etc in Black makes this game a master piece to me. I’m thinking about buying it on the PS store. I’d have absolutely LOVED the sequel to Black…….. I also love the mystery about Black. I love not knowing who or what black is exactly. Very cool and fun video! I’m binging TM content the past 4 weeks. You got anymore videos coming? I think brawl also has the best idea and concept! I wish they’d’ve done more with the character the being kids. That’s so fun and could really be great. Remake all these games. Literally all of them and fox all the character endings for TM3 especially but all of them a little bit. Give us some new characters in Black >:) and a sequel. I’m beyond excited for the show even though there’s some story ideas I’d have liked differently. Just have needles scalp on fire :(

That, and fun little things, like going to the moon and destroying earth, with everyone left fighting for last man standing in a crater on the moon. One thing to remember when you get a chance, like Twisted Metal 2, it has combo moves, though they may throw you off at first. For example, TM2's freeze shot (left, right, up,) is a cash suck attack in RT.

By this idea, they all still die, every time, and they all still return to drive through the damnation, again, & again.

I loved 2012. When it comes to Twisted Metal, Black has the aesthetic and feel I love the most, although TM2 was played A LOT when I was a kid. Black just took everything great about the first two entries and went dark with it, which the characters really benefitted from. So when 2012 landed, it continued that same feel from Black and it was just amazing playing it on PS3. I will agree about the story though. Only 3 characters given an actual story was just downright disappointing and the reasoning for that was David Jaffee himself. He said that because of KZbin, there was no reason to include a story for every driver because people would just watch it online, which I'm interpreting as implying the game wouldn't sell because of that. Turns out that after a strong start in its first two months of sales, selling nearly 500k copies, it fizzled out and I believe it's total copies sold is almost 900k, like between 850k-890k. The lack of story content plus the industry trend of online passes needed, meaning used copies would have to pay $10 to access online multiplayer, really hurt that game in my opinion. Jaffee has given us two great series in Twisted Metal and God of War, but the man's personal views of things on both of these series is just baffling to me. Not only did he create the issue that I believe he was implying with his KZbin comment in regards to TM2012, this dude, JUST LAST DECEMBER I believe, said GoW Ragnarok was basically just DLC for the 2018 entry sold as a full game, which was just laughable and inherently wrong. Dude should just stay away from anything game related, which development wise, he has since 2019, although he does have a consultant role with Movie Games.

Game play wise tm3 was hands down the best. All the other games it felt like you were sliding around and didn't have as much control over the vehicle. Tm3 the vehicles did exactly what I wanted and you didn't slide around unless you wanted too. I know everyone hates it but it's my favorite game. I got so good I would freeze my opponent and jump over them while hitting left,right,down to shoot backwards and I got so fast I could kill the enemies with low health before they could even defend themselves.

Youknow if they ever brought this series back i would love to see it as a thirdperson kinda hero shooter where each character has unique abilities, the only reason the car genre is dead I feel is because most games now adays kinda do it as a footnote, like one facet of the overall game, they dont base an entire game around the one mechanic. I really love the really dark vibe of twisted metal black such a contrast to everything on the market now. I think the biggest strength of the series also is less is more hearing about a persons past is one thing but actually watching their whole backstory would kill it, games more about who they are now and what they are chasing rather than who they were, its kinda the mystery that makes stuff interesting who they were.
