Thanks for showing that you don't need to remove the cutting part of the tool, that makes it much easier

Great video Norbert! But how to measure out to get always the same length. In case of doing 1,5 cm shanks, what to do to make them similar?
@NorbertRenaud
@NorbertRenaud 4 жыл бұрын
At the beginning the shanks are not looking the same length, but practice makes perfect, after a few you will know exactly how much to cut.

Is that more than 18 Gauge? It looks like it. The range for the looper is 18-25 Gauge wire. I have some Malin wire that is .043 in DIA and I was wondering if it was too thick for the tool..?
@NorbertRenaud
@NorbertRenaud 4 жыл бұрын
eric hey Eric, not sure as I get mine in mm but I’m sure it easy to convert. I usually go for the 0.8mm and 1mm for the big game ones

@@NorbertRenaud Looks like 1mm is 0.0394 ″. This wire is .043, thats definitely thicker. Nervous about breaking tool. Broke one already
@NorbertRenaud
@NorbertRenaud 4 жыл бұрын
eric I wouldn’t chance that thick wire, I find the 1mm already thick, I use that one for shanks in front of the hook for solidity only. Wire is cheaper than the pliers , better order thinner one I think

@@NorbertRenaud Yes...sadly I agree. I made a test shank with it but was flinching thinking it would break. I think repeated attempts might break it. Thank you!

Hi, what do you do with these R-shaped shanks? Thanks 😊
@NorbertRenaud
@NorbertRenaud 3 жыл бұрын
I use mostly r loops on my flies for pike. R loop gives you much more strength as you close them and secure them with the tying thread . It also makes a wider opening giving your articulation more room to move .Hope that helps 👍

@@NorbertRenaud Thank you for the explanation. I use the one-step looper for jewelry purposes, so I thought this had something to do with some jewelry component I wasn't aware of, lol. In any event, I found your video interesting and maybe I'll find a way to incorporate your technique using this tool for jewelry-making after all! 😊

I’ve heard a few people breaking the looper on 1mm , personally I have no problem with wire up to 1mm but not sure for 1.5 that could be a bit much for it..

An American fly tier modified the one step looper with a dermal using a cutter blade to remove the cutter arm on the looper toolI don't know if you think this is a good solution as it is a bit drastic but it makes brilliant shanks
@NorbertRenaud
@NorbertRenaud 6 жыл бұрын
Stephen welham no need to modify the looper, both loops can be made without removing the cutter....

@wolverinex4243

Update; I brought one and broke it on second try. Apparently the tool is made of brittle alloy so it's not good for thick or hard wires. There are limits, even if it fits the hole on the right side. The tool needs to be made of steel or a stronger metal. The construction is very quality. The metal is not. They cut corner on that. I would gladly pay $50 for one that is steel. Very dissapointing. Great tool, good concept, bad delivery.

I’ve heard of a few braking , luckily mine still doing fine after 100’s of shanks. But I usually don’t don’t heavy wires over 1mm ( most I use is 0.8mm) Maybe try to get a replacement from where you bought it .

@@wolverinex4243 also try to squeeze slowly and gradually when forming the loop, i think it helps not to put to much pressure when bending thick wire. I also use the largest 3 mm looper , maybe that helps 😉
