The Tyrant demon in Doom Eternal is one in sort of a strange spot. The lore links it back to the Cyberdemon but theres obviously physiological differences and as a result, how exactly does that all work out? The lore logs do state that the Tyrant is one of THE oldest species of demon currently alive today, and they are likely derived from the original inhabitants of Hell. And as we know from the DLC logs, Hell was originally a realm much like Earth with a civilization of its own, but was corrupted by the desire of Davoth, its appointed guardian, to make his people immortal like him. Thus, the human characteristics of the Tyrant such as the skin, along with the herbivore like eyes you pointed out, insinuate that they're original form resembled human beings.

Oh my, so the lore of my fanfiction story is correct?! I didn't played the new Doom yet, but on my story ( which is a Doom/MLP/40K crossover ), the Hell realm was a gateworld, from where many species could quickly come and go, but then the Chaos Gods appeared and a massive war started, resulting in the defeat and corruption of Hell.

Most bipedal digitigrade dinosaurs walked that way because they shared a common quadruped ancestor, and evolution rarely works backwards. So what your species gets, it's stuck with, unless you add in a factor to the ecosystem that would require an adaptation to regress to further the survival of the species.

@@fishpancakes284 Honestly the tyrant doesn't really look like a hardened killer to me, in fact its whole body looks kinda squishy, and its claws aren't that large, further driving home the possibility of them not being the apex predators. Excluding the eyes and the horns, they're also built remarkably similarly to a human IMO, which I don't know what that proves but it is interesting nonetheless.

@@afungai1649 It dose look pretty squishy but that’s most likely due to its very thick skin, hippos for example look very fat and squishy, yet are some of the deadliest animals on the planet and certainly are not prey to anything else. Their claws actually are quite big, they may look small when compared to their own body size but you have to remember that Tyrants are easily one of the biggest demons both in height and weight. They also have very sharp teeth which indicates a carnivorous or in the very least an omnivorous diet. I suppose they still could be prey it’s just that’s it’s unlikely.

One of the devs of DOOM said that the Cyberdemons don't have a specific original species, but instead a Cyberdemon is defined as any high ranking demon that was cybernetically enhanced, which makes the Cyberdemons from Doom, Doom 2, Doom 64, Doom 3, 2016, and Eternal all eligible for the title of Cyberdemon.

Wouldn't the side facing eyes be more effective if the creature didn't have horns? Side facing eyes give a greater field of view, but the way the horns have grown almost completely blocks all sight behind and to the sides of the Tyrant. And I don't think the argent energy mutating the creature is the reason why, because as far as we can tell argent energy only makes horns larger instead of adding them to a creature. Since the horns are located directly behind the eyes, it makes me think the Tyrant was a predator on its homeworld.

Could be for the male of the species to become a prey with a hindrance to show to prospective mates that it can survive while existing with a handicap (like peacock feathers). As long as they could outsize most of the predators on their homeworld, it may just be important to get bigger horns and have a mode of attack even if it straight out kills a majority of males of the species as only a few need to be the alphas of their species and reproduce. I believe other prey horned animals also have such features such as mountain goats which likely don't need to see as much on their environment (cliff slopes) as much as they would need to protect their heads were they to fall.

Considering that Tower of Babel was where you fought the Cyberdemon, that seems to be the idea. It also mentions that they got their cybernetic enhancements from the UAC, so they were a menace even before being augmented (at least with more than a single-shot rocket launcher). Them acting as wardens and slavers for ages would also explain the practicality behind their side-facing eyes, the wide field of view allowing them to keep watch over a greater area and ensure that nobody steps out of line. They may at one point have been similar to bulls, which can (and will) effortlessly tear you a new one despite not being predators. And given their size, there probably weren't many species capable of overpowering them.

With the eyes, it seems like the face is actually stretched out a bit, most likely to fit the mechanical skull. The eyes ars further apart, but at the same time they still seem to face forward quite a bit if you acknowledge the stretched skin.

It may not be the canon lore, but in my fan head canon at least, the Baalgar Cyberdemon was the “Lord of Tyrants,” the same that the Slayer fought in the Tower of Babel, and a member of the same species, and the aesthetic differences are simply because he’s been destroyed, resurrected, and HEAVILY experimented on and pieced together, with the UAC simply “doing their best.” Again, just my own personal “for fun” head canon🙂

Basically if a mortal is kill by a demon, they are ressurected in Hell, where they are captured and tortured to oblivion (as demons literally feed off of suffering and pain). Once the victim has become a lifeless husk the body is discarded into the Blood Swamps where it slowly morphs into a low-ranking demon.

There's an unused Tyrant death model in the game. It notably has the entire left arm missing, a second ribcage entirely of metal, And a very thick cable from the hip to where the left shoulder would have been. It is otherwise identical to the regular Tyrant. Both the used and unused Tyrant models have 2 rails for the cannon that are supposed to slide out the barrel before it fires; but because of a skinning error they're stuck crumpled inside. The rails can be seen on the concept art if you want an idea what they'd look like.

While Tyrant and Cyberdemon are clearly related(even if not as close as seemed at first), the more interesting question is development process on their bionics. Someone thought that their implants were success even after Cyberdemon aka first prototype was defeated by Slayer in less then a minute. Meanwhile they don't appear to have influenced the bionics of the Hunters. Are demons running two separate competing factory lines?:D

As another comment (which for some reason isn't showing up here, but appeared as notification) said, Cyberdemon was their proof of concept prototype. Hunters are produced in cultist bases too and we even see the production process of first few ones, BUT who designed them remains a question. Hellpriest claims that he did, but he sure doesn't look like an engineer:D Though that pointless skull decoration on the gun suggests that indeed someone less practical then UAC was involved. Then we have Spider Masterminds and in that case first one came from warping around Olivia Pierce. It just came with bionics installed just because she had bionics. Can Hell just snap cyborgs into existence? Who knows. Maybe all Hunters, Tyrants, Masterminds are just "hell energy clones" of their prototypes which are kept somewhere in Hell and are used as matrixes in daemonic army printing/teleporting machine? Then we have Carcasses and other enchanced basic demons, which are clearly produced by cultists en masse. The only missing cyborgs are loyal(once again, from our PoV) UAC cyborg guards/cyborg commandos that you can remember from Mars facility as source of your armor tokens and as multiplayer player characters. They were Hayden's answer to Marauders. Pity we don't see them in combat.

Something I've always been curious about is how intelligent the demons actually are. We know the archvile is generally considered the most intelligent of demons, but nothing much is said about the others. Are individual demons intelligent enough to think for themselves or are they at the same level of cognitive function as eusocial insects? None of them really exhibit behavior that indicates some degree of creative thinking or even awareness of their environment, but that might just be the result of gameplay limitations.

Here’s my theory on it’s species relations to the 2016 cyberdemon in the original DOOM we can see that it’s the same demon just with a few add modifications as the arm blade and the back jet boosters I believe that 2016 cyberdemon is a sub species of the tyrant possibly created by the hell Priest or by one of the rulers in the inner circles of hell and possibly used as guard for the inner circle of hell rulers and used in hordes of them

What? The _2016_ Cyberdemon looks almost nothing like Tyrants. Just about the only thing they have in common is the plantigrade leg structure. Also, the Cyberdemon wasn't a one-of-a-kind, but a member of an ancient race called Baalgar demons. And it definitely wasn't any kind of "guard for hell rulers", because by all accounts the Cyberdemon itself _was_ a hell ruler.

@@TheDaxynn1 Yep, you’re right, the Tyrant appears in a Slayer Gate before it does in the “main campaign.” To be fair, though, the Tyrant doesn’t really need an introduction; it doesn’t have any weak points, and the suggested tip on how to beat him in the Codex is “shoot it till it dies” LOL

The timeline screws over the hunter/tyrant theory as the tyrants existed before the fight with the 2016 cyberdemon as DoomGuy killed the OG cyberdemon who was most certainly a member of the tyrant species so in think you could be right with the hunters and tyrants but not with the 2016 cyberdemon

I mean we all know the reason why the tyrant has a leg ripped off and arm ripped off not because of the slayer it was because of terror billy the main protagonist of wolfenstein because there is a boss fight in wolfenstein 2 I think and you use a spear and take off it's right leg and left arm and the tyrant vowed to comeback and kill for bj's descendants aka the doom slayer and as we can see he couldn't keep it's promise

Interestingly enough, even though the original Cyberdemon only had the rocket attack it still has the same wires and mechanics going into it's gunless arm. Anyone remember the Doom Zoo website from back in the day? I remember it had an interesting idea that there's a flexible piece of bar running through one arm, across the chest and into the other arm and the reason the Cyberdemon hold it's free arm out when it fires it to lock that cross-beam into position as it acts as a sort of shock absorber for the gun's recoil. The Doom Zoo also made a point that the eyes are spread so far apart as to give it better depth perception.
