Fr tho many did. Harold the 1st the English hero and his wife "swanneck" was a love match. Edward 1 was messed up when his wife died the crosses he erected still stand. Richard the 3rd grew up with his wife. Even the usurper Henry 7 was said to be happy with Elizabeth York. Eddy 4 and the white queen. Eddy 8 gave up the crown for his wife.

He was given the pressure at age 10. Edward III had at least one parent with him until he grew up. The black prince had his dad with him his whole life. Losing your parents at grandparents at age 10 and then being given the pressure of a whole country does things to people.

I kinda think Joffrey was based on Edward of Lancaster - son of Margaret of anjou and henry vi cause after seeing his mockumentary I am convinced that Joffrey is worse than Richard ii, if Richard ii was anything like Joffrey than he would not been able to crush the peasants revolt, wouldn't have been loved by anne of bohemia , have two successful campaigns in Ireland, wouldn't have been shown Mercy by the lords appellant in 1388, and definitely would been have killed as a teenager.

Far too many significant things omitted. Henry of Bolingbroke's father John of Gaunt is barely mentioned. He was the the most powerful noble in England throughout Richard's reign and a huge influence . s proven warrior and politician he was a sophisticated man who was a moderating influence on both Richard and those who opposed him. Unfortunately in the early part of Richard's reign he spent a lot of time in Spain pressing his second wife's claim to the throne of Castile. Not mentioned were John Wycliffe [ translated the bible into English ] and Geoffrey Chaucer the poet. This reflected the fact that English was taking over from French at the top of society. Richard spent the first 7 years of his life in Bordeaux and spoke French as his first langauge. Bolingbroke and even his uncle, Thomas Duke of Gloucester [youngest son of King Edward III ] spoke English as their first language, so Richard came across as favouring the language of the enemy.

When Henry Bolinbroke became King, as Henry IV, he spoke English. Nevertheless Richard II could also speak English as he did during the peasant's revolt. Also there was a cook book written in English written in the King Richard's kitchens. It should be noted that the English at that time is significantly different from Present Day English.

Am reading new bio right now The Red Prince by Helen Carr about John of Gaunt highly recommend it. I was a medieval scholar at university started a Chaucer society. I always appreciated Gaunt's patronage of Chaucer plus his political acumen via his son Henry and his enduring love for Kathryn Swynford. Of course he and she are the ancestors of the controversially legitimized Beaufort clan who for better or worse spawned the Tudors...this history is amazing back when rulers ruled by earning their thrones amidst great dangers. One of the joys of reading Chaucer in Middle English is seeing actual modern English evolve via Norman influence. I can't get enough of this history glad so many people here enjoy it as well!

That is about what happens when you take a teenager who is already a little too spoiled for his own good, and then you give him a serious superiority complex. That is bad enough without throwing a crown into the middle of the whole thing. When you hand him a crown you then have a recipe for FLAT OUT DISASTER. And that's putting it mildly

No Richard wasn't a tyrant. There were a lot less excutions under his rule than most other English kings. He was also not a warmonger like a lot of medieval kings at that time. That's why a lot of the nobility didn't like him. He actually wanted to stop the wars with France, which a lot of the peasants had to pay for. This documentary is basically one sided drivel.

John of Gaunt probably gets a worse reputation than he really deserves. By the time he assumed a leading role in the military, the Hundred Years War was already turning against England. John was actually a very brave military leader who performed decently. If anyone deserves blame for the war going badly in the 1370s, its the Black Prince. That Spanish expedition was just foolish and unnecessary.

After watching this again I wonder why they never mention what Richard II's other uncles, John of Gaunt (Founder of House Lancaster) and Edmund of Langley ( Founder of House York), were doing all during Richard II' reign? They said that their youngest brother Thomas Duke of Gloucester was responsible for giving Richard II the news about getting rid of his friends and was one of the 5 lords(also including Henry Bolinbroke who was John of Gaunts oldest son) that confronted Richard II but in the end decided to let him keep the crown, but where were they while all this was happening? Then when Henry Bolingbroke had enough of Richard II's tyranny after Richard II stripped his inheritance that he was supposed to receive after the death of his father, John of Gaunt, and invaded and took the crown, Richard II had actually left his uncle Edmund of Langley in charge of the realm, while he was campaigning in Ireland. So obviously Richard II must have trusted his uncle Edmund of Langley a great deal to leave him in charge so I'm surprised that this video said absolutely nothing about him?

Technically the Plantagenet dynasty didn't end until the Tudors (1485) as both the houses of Lancaster and York were descendants of Edward III and so Plantagenet's themselves.
