Ok, so, as a Chilean, it really upsets me when other Chileans refuse to call Pinochet a dictator. But I also understand that for many people it is not so black and white. Pinochet was in power for 17 years, and he took over the media and outlawed many political parties. My dad was 4 in 1973, he grew up believing Pinochet was a great man, he even shook his hand when he came to his school. When Pinochet finally left power, a lot of people still liked him. The key word being left, he wasn't overthrown, he resigned. A lot of what he did was covered up, since he left on his own terms. The healing has been particularly difficult because of that. For many years, Pinochet could sit in Congress and give his opinion because of the way he set up the 1980 Constitution. My dad is now embarrased he once liked Pinochet, but he shouldn't be because it wasn't his fault, and when he realized the truth he acknowledged that. However, many people don't like feeling wrong or embarrased, even if it is the right way to feel. So they will go down swinging for a dictator, but won't call him that

lorenz96596 You shouldn't compare Che Guevara with Fidel. I understand your point about Fidel being a "dictator from the left", but El Che didn't wanted to stay after the Revolution, he wanted to help other Latinamerican countries and even African ones through people's revolution. I highly respect that. I wish we had someone like him in the 70s to kick out Pinochet.

Definitely intergenerational hatred. My father, uncles, and grandfather were tortured in the Chilean concentration camps. I saw the long-lasting psychological effects it had on my dad. I will never forgive America, and the arrogance in which Americans demand we all "remember 9/11" without an ounce of idea or tact for what they did to my country. Y'all can go f*** yourselves. (As a nation. I don't hate individuals citizens. I just hate the loud overbearing way in which Americans claim to have the best country in the world--regardless of what statistics say.)

It happened multiple times, the United States is the worst country in the western hemisphere. The have put many dictators in Latin america. Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and the list goes on. I mean the US supported Batista and Diaz. The US screwed over Venezuela, by giving the Essequibo to Guyana, or the Malvinas to England when they(Europeans) should have no right to it. The US has allowed foreign powers to control our affairs. The US is a hypocrite with it's shitty Monroe Doctrine. Look at the Platt Amendment, and that's why Puerto Rico is the next slave state for the US. I know I missed a lot of US backed dictators and other US interventions that led to the massive death of our people, but the list would go on.

Allende was a hazard. He wasnt just made to look bad by the CIA, he actually elected ignorants to high offices and allowed communists to steal and take anything they wanted taking people away from their houses. Fidel Castro was fucking thrilled sending weapons and military forces to train a guerrilla. I know people in the US will be thinking about the ethics of what their government did but personally, I am fucking glad Chile is today an economically stable country and safe to live in. Allende would have us running barefooted in the desert pretty much like in Cuba. I don't agree with your uncle but the truth is that the only happy communist is the one living in a capitalist country. I happen to be glad my Chile is not fucking communist.

After 40 years, we still have to struggle with the consequences of the dictatorship. Despite of living in "democracy", Chile is one of the richest country from Latin America yet most unequal. Before Pinochet, we had healthcare and all the levels of education provided by the state, now we have to pay for eveything; get study loans to get into the university or organize benefit events to pay the hospital bills if you get sick. Although young people are constantly protesting to change all situations mentioned before and others, it has been really difficult because we are still ruled by the dictatoship's constitution, written by Jaime Guzman in 1980. It's almost tragicomic. You may ask why we haven't changed the constitution if the dictatorship ended in 1989, well, that's why the word democracy is in quotation marks at the top of this text. People who worked for DINA is still working for the goverment in some parts of the country, Pinochet died without even putting a foot into jail , and the other the men who were found guilty for planning and executing the dictatoship and the torturing were put into jails that look like five star hotels. Even the Mercurio newspaper that you showed is still read by many people. Well, I'm hoping that future generations won't be as cowards as many of my contemporary fellows and burn this whole country down so things will be better.

the reason why some people like Pinochet is because he annihilated the "communist menace" that was growing in Chile. You might say that Allende was just a socialist not a commie, but he was supported and pressured by the communist party. The people that support Pinochet say that without him, we would have ended like Cuba is now, and not like the modern Chile, which, compared with our neighbors, isn't bad at all. I personally agree that someone had to stop that, but no one can predict the future so he didn't have a strong excuse, and also killing and torturing, although effective, are not the most morally good ways to achieve that goal.

So is that an excuse? The Communist party was giving their support to Allende was bc they knew that their candidate wouldn't win, so was way better to give their support to a socialist than to a (I really don't know how to say this in English so here we go) facho. That didn't make him a communist. And no one could predict the future but why would they have to go on and give power to the armed forces. I mean, really? I can say that most of them have their brain a little damaged, after all the aconditionament it was really easy to put them against anyone (even the high ranges). So CIA said 'go on and stop the commy' and of course, they wouldn't wait one more year until the other election as we are a democratic country, they fucking massacred everyone that had the slightest look of a communist. But how would they know? Giving power to someone that's fucked up mentally never made genocide possible :)

Danny, just one mistake: that picture of Eduardo Frei is wrong. That's his son, also named Eduardo Frei, who ruled Chile 1994 - 2000.

Bro, you've got the Eduardo Frei picture wrong; look for Eduardo Frei Montalva, who was the president right before Allende. The picture you showed is of Eduardo Frei Montalva's son, Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, who was also president of Chile but between 1994 and 2000

Great job on exposing what happened although not all the info is exactly accurate is good enough for the time the video lasts and to show there was indeed a influence of USA in Chile and also many other countries in south America at the time against the very feared socialism ha- But at the end of the day because of the way the dictatorship was lead here or something Chile is today the safest country in south America with the highest levels of stability but unfortunately at the cost of a big violation of human rights... And I just love it when Chile is mentioned ! VIVA CHILE !

Thanks for making this video, it's important for the world to know what happened in our country. BUT: The Eduardo Frei you put in the picture is not the president that was elected in 1964, but his son, who was also president but in 1994. This is the Eduardo Frei you were talking about: es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduardo_Frei_Montalva

Loved the video, Danny. I'm from Costa Rica and I'd love to see a video about that time the US invaded us to train the Contra in Nicaragua. Fun times... said no one ever. The effects of that are still being felt in Nicaragua and Ortega got himself "reelected" just last November. Rip that old bastard a new one!
