Back at it again with the Legacy reviews. I don't really know what to say about this one, other than I spent way too long trying to figure out how to write this video in a way that wasn't too preachy.
I have strong feelings about this figure and the design, but I didn't wanna come off like a terminally online culture warrior. That said, I am also planting my flag in the ground on this issue, despite the unpopularity of my position within the fandom.
One major thing I should've mentioned as well is just how unfun she is to play with and pose. Her articulation is limited in some regards and my copy especially has crappy wings, so putting her in a pose feels like stacking a delicate house of cards.

They certainly aren't but that's not the right term to use for it. Elita-1 from the same line looks dramatically more feminine. That's because that's what Elita-1 looks like, and this Windblade figure doesn't really look like Windblade.

It is infuriating I agree. "Oh but it's a show aimed at kids. We don't want to degrade women". First of all kids are stupid. They're not gonna know a random robot on store shelves is female unless they have feminine features. Especially since we don't do bios on the box anymore. Second, a lot of the more raunchy female TF toys are aimed at adults who just want something different. And it's typically of characters people already like because of their character, not their appearance. Though it's not like this fandom buys characters already based on their appearance. But that's for different reasons. I'm sorry we don't do more sexy men like Lio Convoy and Lost Light Rodimus.

This is the series where a alien truck dude literally has abs for grils and the windows for wide pecks. I think people just get triggered over those apparent feminie designs being there since they associate it with degration.

These are the same kids that have likely played games like GTA, and are playing with action figures to represent war or have seen Optimus rip and tearing the Decepticons a new one in the movies, but that doesn’t mean they’ll start treating women badly just because they watched or played a certain media or because they see a toy that looks feminie. Especially when at worst, all that media did is make the robots look feminine next to the masculine ones. A action future of a fictonal female character on TV isn’t gonna make kids degrade women just because she has a feminine design.

I feel like the main issue with a lot of the less popular character molds is they tend to be way too generic for the sake of possible recolors or retools. There's even the perfect example in this very video from Shadow Striker, she's clearly just a pretool for RID Sideburn.

Specifically the backpack, if you want. You could miss transform it into the 2 parts line up with the wings or take off the backpack to give the wings more options for posing. My only grip was the Face, kind wish the eyes were bigger like in cybverse and the paint was closer to the show. I probably will end up doing that myself at some point

Windblade is my favorite figure from United that I've gotten my hands on so far, but if nothing else, I at least agree with you about the turbines. They really did half-finish them and then try to tell us it's a feature. I guess I like that both sides looking different gives you options as to how you want to display the turbines, but man, they could've done _something_ other than leaving them unpainted. But it's a small gripe.

The "chunking up" of prior designs to fit within some aesthetic kicked off by Siege is... sure a thing. TF Prime Arcee and Bulkhead, Animated Bumblebee, now Windblade. Strongarm at least started thick and ended thick. And I like the Prowl mold but as a Chromia??

Just like Legacy Prime Arcee, this figure does suffer looking more like an athletic, adolescent boy than a slender, feminine woman. I've seen this really cool custom transformation done by someone splitting her nosecone into skirt pieces, not only making her look more samurai-esque, but also giving her the illusion of wider hips. As far as I can remember it didn't seem like that difficult a custom, and it make the figure look a whole lot better while keeping in able to transform. What bothers me most, however, and is a common criticism I have towards Windblade designs, are those stupid mouth seams HasTak insists on giving her. Sometimes they look okay drawn in the comic books, but more often than not, they make her look like she either has a creepy ventriloquist mouth or a pair of saggy granny cheeks. It's especially bad here, since it's etched into the face sculpt rather than just some tampo I could paint over. Personally, I'll probably skip this one, maybe wait and see who it'll look retooled into Slipstream. At this point I'm grateful Blackarachnia was allowed to keep her arachnid bitties back in Kingdom. Imagine the lnych mob messing with her feral funbags would've provoked...

Not only does she actually look cute and, you know, like a person, but combined with Mairghread Scott's writing being the only version of Windblade that I really liked, I basically see IDW Windblade as the best and definitive article of the character.

Look, I dont mean to be a hater but I want to discuss perchance. When it comes to Windblade's design, I don't know about you but I associate her with her main Japanese aesthetics 1st than the curves of the body. It's so cool to see transformers display certain cultures with respect I feel. That's why I think most people weren't complaining about her as suppose Shadowstriker, people wanted the frankenstein-esque gal, not the repaint. I think we, as a community should stop expecting fembots to just look like fembots, and instead look at what makes a character that character. so what if they're slightly less round or less curvy? We should vouch for more experimentation for their designs. If the male bots get away with unique and different designs while being faithful to who they are, so do they.

People have vastly different body structures from one another and so do transformers, just look at guys. Plus there's examples that go against that you know like strika. Legacy united windblade is still just as much as windblade as one of the hyper sexualized ones because she has her characteristics still, her japanese inspired aesthetic. And if you think she doesn't simply because she doesn't look girly enough, I think there is simply something wrong with how you look at people besides fembots.

see, thats the biggest problem ive had with modern hasbro/takara designers. They DONT know how to sculpt cat like heads... cough cough lioconvoy... and they DONT know how to make female robots. Look at the NEMESIS titan for example. Thats supposed to be a female? Generations/Kingdom Arcee and blackarachnia are the only two recent figures i can give thumbs up to, in terms of fembots translating to figures.

I can kinda agree with you on the Windblade; I don’t think it’s that bad in my opinion, but I could’ve been much better. I feel the same about the SS86 Slug with Slug being my favorite Dinobot,albeit Slug is A LOT WORSE,that figure looks like actual garbage akin to a cheap knockoff with those proportions. At least Shadow Striker has an obvious excuse of her origin design being a head swap re-deco of RID Sideburn (would’ve preferred a design based significantly more on the Cyberverse design, but I don’t really mind what we did get either), and Hasbro used that as an opportunity to utilize this mold for another figure before even revealing the Sideburn; it’s like the Titans Return voyager Optimus just being a pre-tool of Octane.

A problem I have is that the wings look *ugly* with how they prominently show the underside in the robot mode, ports and all. Yuck. I can't think of another recent deluxe that does that. That said... I'm getting this. I've always dug Windblade's design, but I got into Transformers after everyone got sick of her and Hasbro didn't make new figures. She and Chromia in her first series were the perfect duo to me, so I guess I'll own two figures you hate 😅

Here's a propose for a new windblade transformation, instead of a backpack, the arms become the nose cone for the jet mode, shoulderpads and all, there would be flaps or curved panels at the butt that would cover the chest in jet mode, the head would tuck in the body like the thrilling 30 version, and the leg transformation would be the same like on the Legacy version. If someone's willing to make that happen I'll be happy (btw this idea is based on my version of Windblade I thought of, with her also being my favorite of all time next to Bumblebee, she needs some more love) With the idea I just thought of that's just one of a million ways to give female Transformers Transformations and designs that are fun, clever, and still make them look female but not too weird or uncanny looking compared to the male characters. Ya'know just a thought.

I dunno man, the Generations, Titan Returns and Cyberverse figures of Windblade are actually appealing while also still making them for children. Heck, Prime Arcees also have that appeal too without making them like porn figures that aren't for children. Even Elita One from the same line as this Windblade has that feminine appeal that many previous figures have. You can like feminine features without turning them to borderline porn, and Legacy Windblade just isn't appealing.

While she isn’t the sexist version of Windblade, she is the best built and I really do appreciate that. He more masculine build doesn’t bother me as I’m very much a fan of the idea that Transformers should be androngenous by design. They are robots, why would they have boobs? I also think this is why so many fembot figures tend to suck, as it’s more impossible to make a robot out of designs like G1 Arcee do to the hyper-femininity of it. To each their own, though.

I think the biggest travesty for me is the crummy VTOL mode. It's short and stubby, unlike the concept art or any other iterations which have a sleek design that I really like. Easily the worst looking of any of the official figures' alt modes. Robot mode is okay. Honestly, I don't really care for the T30 robot mode design. I am disappointed they didn't try to be more faithful to the Cyberverse incarnation on which she is based. It feels like it would have been better to use the RID 2015 figure as the starting point, just add better articulation to the robot mode and more paint apps with a Cyberverse head sculpt.
