So a contentious topic within the Super Smash Bros community is the nature of homie stocks and if it's okay or not, especially in tournament. I decide to give my thoughts on this.

Homie stocks are for homies. They're the occasional symbolic gesture that says, "I value the fun we have, and the friendship we hold, over the outcome of this game". Homie stocks are a tone setter for friendlies, signaling to your pals that you're playing semi-seriously and dicking around is a valid option.

To argue that homie stocking in friendlies is a sign that you're taking the friendly too seriously is strange to me. IMO it's always been the exact opposite. I homie stock in friendlies _because_ I don't take friendlies seriously. It's the opposite in a tournament setting, where you should always be playing to win, e.g. never homie stocking, unless you don't care about the game.

Yeah when I first played melee, it was so obvious I lacked super basic tech skill (missing wave dashing, basically never l cancelling, awful recovery, etc.) and I ran into a lot of people who were playfully switching characters, taunting and homie stocking whenever I made obvious mistakes that didn’t really involve them. It was a nice introduction to the community to not just get destroyed and teabagged.

High ping still causes frame drops though. I get random games all the time on netplay where the fps is not 60. It probably just accidentally polled his fastfall on the same frame as his jump. I think he meant to bair from ledge so that explains why he just fell.

that's what he's saying about your cpu. when there's high ping and it causes a rollback, your game has to step back several frames and resimulate the simulation with the new inputs, and if your cpu is bad that will cause a frame drop. if your cpu is keeping up it shouldn't make a difference since person A will do their inputs independently, person B will do their inputs, and then if there's a conflict it will resolve it, it won't just eat the input

The Sheik RTC "homie stock" is interesting, but I feel like the logic could be extrapolated into a world where we just resign if our opponent is higher ranked than us, or if they play a character that's a 6:4 matchup to ours. I hit that level of post casual skill where I would beat my friends 100% of our games, but go 0-2 at every event I entered, and that left me homie stocking a lot to keep my friends actually playing for an hour or two instead of getting frustrated after a few matches, which I think lays out the crux of the situation pretty clearly: Dont homie stock if you're not homies. AND if you homie stock and lose, take your fkn L on the chin.

One time in tournament, playing marth ditto and we both have two stocks, and the opponent makes one of the most sad sds ever. I really liked this dude's marth playstyle (aka he was actually fun to play and not spamming fsmash) so I homie stocked. This was game 3 of a bo3 and I actually lost because I homie stocked. I was really sad but, I was happy this actually cool marth player won because I wanted my marth to be more like his.

Huh. That’s like making the choice of whether or not you want to learn from another player from the point of either winning, or losing the set. It’s not wrong either way, but what’s a bit rattling is probably not taking into consideration the weight of an immediate decision like that in the moment, and opportunity loss. How much do you trust yourself to learn from a specific loss, versus just using the most of your current knowledge to win? How cool headed are you in either scenario is how I end up trying to think about it, and I find that’s different all the time depending on the match and my opponent.

I disagree that "it shows you care too much about the friendly" but I'm from slippi era. For me on unranked it shows that you have respect for your opponent - you aren't there to just 3 stock them when you don't deserve it, you want them to have a chance of winning so they aren't demotivated. Or if it's a much better player than me, I don't want their SD to delegitimise my W at low level melee people SD all the time because they just haven't had the practice, but it's good that they are TRYING to ledgedash and sding or reverse laser and side b'ing off stage. I wouldn't want someone to top trying those things because it's making them lose friendlies. So a homie stock is just a mutual, "we've all been there". and most of the time when I homie stock, it ends up getting repaid later on. and if everyone homie stocks it lowers the standard deviation on stocks I wouldn't homie stock if someone was at 190 and I'm at 0 though, there's not an exact science for when homie stocking is cool, I wouldn't do it in that situation lucky was in because it was a dropped edgeguard and I "won" the interaction and made them sd with my mixup

I think there's one interesting perspective you've missed Toph. I know I'm absolutely in the deep minority, but I homie stock opponents only with the intention of causing mental damage through this option select: Either they win and feel bad for winning, or they lose and feel even worse (that one is the juiciest, yum yum). Basically as soon as you get homie stocked on, it's hard to get it out of your head for the rest of the match, and it's it totally on the homee to deal with that, and the homer is completely within their right to mentally fuck up their opponent. In fact when I get homied stocked on, I counter-homie in defiance because (at least in the common case of ledge dashing) it was MY choice to risk ledge dashing and gaining invincibility frames.

I'm a fan of Homie Stocks but I only do them in pretty specific situations. If my opponent was really messing me up for a stock and then SD's in a way that had nothing to do with me or was caused by some lag while I make it back alive with high percent, I might homie stock since I feel like both of us earned a stock loss or at least that we should be back to even. If my opponent rushes an edge guard or some other move and SD's I don't Homie cause my pressure was part of them rushing and messing up. I also NEVER homie a SD on a ledge dash. Going for a frame perfect ledge dash is a Gamble you choose to take knowing full well you might die. For this example of Lucky vs Hax I think I wouldn't have homie stocked since Hax died while rushing inputs on an edge guard. That lack of control under pressure is something Lucky helped cause. However, Lucky said after the set that it was super laggy so I get why he would do it especially if it lagged right at that moment. Lucky might have also done it to make sure Hax couldn't blame cross country lag as easily.

Ur story of the guy homie stocking his last stock is perfect. The “kool aid” being taken to far. The other way is bad tho, no homie stocks ever is logic being taken to far. Dropping a kill combo and sd’ing are 2 different situations. Its video games, not meant to be a perfectly logical medium, and its a social experience. Logic being taken to far sucks all the joy and magic out. Balance and knowing where the boundaries are, is key.

This video is old, but I wanna add that in friendlies especially, in some situations it's good to homie stock imo to make the game closer and more tense. Last game last stock just hits different then last game 2 stocks to one (in the case that the friendly is player in the form of a set)

I hear you say that you won't homie on unranked because, "I don't know you, we're not homies" - But unranked as an environment is just your skill vs. your opponent. And like you said in your last video - When you're playing against someone who is *at your skill level* melee is at its best. That is peak melee for a player. When you cruise unranked and you meet someone like that. That you play with for hours because you both recognize that, "Yo, this is both fun and I'm learning a lot." - That's a Homie, in my opinion. Homie stocks serve two functions. 1. It's a friendly and you want to practice on even ground and pretend unforced errors don't exist 2. It's a real match and you want to PROVE that you can win without their SD at 0. If you win with the homie they have no John. If they win with the homie, you CAN technically get to John, but if it's truly a "homie" stock you aren't supposed to John. It's about playing on your terms.

something i feel people never bring up about homie stock culture is how up until slippi came out a huge percentage of melee friendlies were played on winner stays rotations, so when people say the outcome of friendlies don't matter that's not entirely true. time on the setups at a tournament/fest is a finite resource so if I feel like someone is beating me solidly and "deserves" to stay on the rotation I feel like homie stocking is a pretty nice friendly gesture. I don't think its something people should feel pressured to do but I do find it a bit annoying and speaks to a little tpp when some top players act like caring about the outcome of a friendly is something only someone with a bad player mentality would do when they can effectively sit in their hotel rooms and post about what matchup they need to practice and have great players show up to play them as long as they want . its so far removed from mid level player experience of roaming a venue often having to wait a while to play any friendlies at all and really wanting to keep winning when you finally get on a rotation you feel is giving you good practice.

I’ve been playing melee for like a month now and on unranked. I haven’t yet played in online tournaments yet mind you, but I homie stock if the dood is clearly new or just being hella chill. I think personally, I practice better if both my opponent and I are having fun and not being afraid to try dumb things out. That being said in tournament unless I personally know you, I’m probably not homie stocking.

My personal opinion is it depends on how the set is going. If both players are playing well and someone SD's I'll SD as well because I dont wanna win that way. But that's basically it, I'll homie a stock with a buddy but tourney is play to win

Not rolling with mistakes, being too nice, and trying too hard not to play lame held me back from improving for like 2 years. I think I even got to a point where I just stopped looking for and seeing win conditions if they didn't feel fair and cool.

Yea there’s arguments to not pick up on what would be bad habits if you’re goal is to improve. An improvement mentality though in the age of Slippi I don’t think is gonna stumble much on homie stocks. Finding the right opponents for you to get better takes adapting to a specific mindset to find appropriate players to match against. For me, if someone’s not playing in that same mindset to begin with, I don’t think my expectations whenever more serious should be set to a friendlies game. I’m just free to leave, or pull out a pika and courteously peace out.

when i first start playing someone on netplay we usually homie stock first few games then after that it is zero homie stocks

For me it’s one way or the other. If we start out with homie stocking early on and both of us are having fun, we stop homie stocking later on, but if we gradually get adjusted to playing against eachother and end up playing a long session, it usually ends up with a few homie stocks here and there

Homie stocking in 90% of situations I see in friendlies, is something I find so reprehensible that a lot of times I only give it my F game the next stock, because I just can't be bothered to care for the next fifteen seconds.

I homie stock out of honor. If you're comboing me nasty and SD in the middle of it, the stock is yours. I'm too honest to take a lead I didn't create, its as simple as that even if it's tourney. Toomany ppl look too deeply into it and get offended over it I really don't get it. Homie Stocking is also a great way of conveying "I understand, bro. Shit happens." Especially with online experiences. Now there's ANOTHER type of homiestocking that IS toxic invented by a friend of mine and it's called the "soup strat" where you kill your oponent and kill yourself if you're at high percent just so you ice your opponent from getting a kill so they don't build momentum. THIS type of homiestocking is extremely scummy and for some reason it is trending with Doc and Mario players idk why lol

I think the homie stock in friendlies is like when you're playing pool and your friend accidentally pots the black ball, but you catch it before it drops down and play on since you want the game to be fun and not just ez win.

Honestly I kinda get that falcon who homied the last stock. If you're consistently losing to a good player, and they SD, winning that game is hollow. It's not enough for me to want to do that (and I've certainly won sets based on people SDing when they were playing much better), but i understand the mentality of it. Also I definitely feel what you were saying with the shieks and execution tests vs. homies. Like I'd struggle to want to homie a missed ledge dash cuz I play peach and those people certainly aren't letting me off the ledge for free lol.

I homie stock on unranked so they don't rage and DC. Normally I wouldn't care, but getting a good connection is difficult as it is, and a big % of people just DC when they lose really bad, so if I homie stocks I might get a few low ping games in

Funny how, for you, the conditions for giving a homie stock are that the other player failed executing a combo that would have taken your stock PLUS they loosed their stock in the process instead. I've never seen it that way lol. For me it's just a matter of if you the other player fucks up and loses their stock WITHOUT me being part of the whole interaction. Like neutral was just reset, other player is on the other side of the stage, tried to make a ledge dash just to get on and begin neutral and they fuck up and sd. That's when I would consider homie stocking because it was just a brain fart and it's unranked so whatever there are no high stakes (although it's true what you say, it could still be good practice for improving your B game). I would 100% homie stock you if it was a situation like that AND you were very low percent lol. That for sure is a "damn that sucks. Let me make it even". But I usually never expect anyone to homie stock me. If they do, cool. If they don't, who cares it's unranked lmao. Idk. It's just like a kind? gesture you can show strangers? Like saying good morning to a stranger passing by when you're walking on the street, I think? It's considered a nice gesture but I don't think anyone will be mad or will expect everyone else to say good morning to them lol.

I swear every time I homiestock I play worse the next stock/always lose the game. And when my opponents don't do it back I've got this sense of entitlement "I should have had that stock". Constantly thinking about it instead of thinking about what's currently happening in the game.

if someone doesn't homie stock you, just don't homie stock them, don't get salty about it. you have to have clarity of mind when you play melee. don't homie stock if it messes up your mentality. you should be thinking "aww poor guy, we've all made those SDs, I'll give him the stock", not "damn now I am socially forced to homie stock! fuck I'm down! how will I win?!?!" really in melee you should always be thinking "eh I've won these before" even when you're down, not obsessing about past interactions. and last stock you should be thinking "I am the fucking clutch god" not "oh shit I don't want to lose!"

When i want to play friendlies i want to know who is gonna win the match i feel like that is the point of a match. So when someone just kills themselves i dont know if i would have won the game or not. i think its dumb to waste a game like that for no reason like im mature enough to lose a game because i sded its still fun to play the match out.
