I remember I loved Mother Teresa, and was all for her becoming beatified, until I read about her history. When I read what her nuns said about her, about what she was really like- that she was a tyrant who, in a nutshell, abused patients and themselves, I felt betrayed, and I was so angry. This woman sat there and kept medicine and necessities from desperate people because she claimed that pain and suffering made people closer to Jesus by sharing his own suffering, and yet, when she got sick, she got herself top-notch medical care. Guess she didn't want to share in Jesus' suffering. She was such a hypocrite. I'm still angry about it.

I saw a public service announcement on TV back in the 1990's. In a voice-over, Mother Teresa described how she found a man dying on the streets, and her order gave the man a bed to die in. She said something like, "He died with the most beatific smile on his face." At the time, I felt something was profoundly wrong with Mother Teresa. She ignored the man until he was ready to die, then she put him in a controlled environment where she could control his suffering and death...all for the glory of Jesus Christ. That's messed up.
@marksaffian20829 ай бұрын
The poor of Calcutta would just die in the gutter by the thousands. She saw this one man and gave him a bed. In the end she gave succor to thousands. It is an error to say that she ignored him before his situation became hopeless. Imagine the terrible plight of those desperately poor people. She did something to ease their suffering, give them dignity, and show them kindness and love. No one ever said that saints were perfect in their lives. Did she handle this reality as you would have? Of course not. Did she make mistakes? Of course. Had you taken on this mission would you have made mistakes? Of course. How easy it is to criticize.

@Corey Robinson I did research on this years ago... Hitchens, who spent all of one afternoon at Mother Theresa's organization, put forth Mary Louden as a MT "volunteer" in his hit piece 'Hell's Angel', when in fact Louden was a professional writer[ "Journalist, writer, and poet. Has appeared on radio and television programs", married to a PR professional which might explain how Hitchens contacted her] with a career of trashing religion prior to her "service" to MT, who only spent two weeks there. Here are two books Louden wrote prior to "volunteering" for MT: (Editor)Unveiled: Nuns Talking, Chatto & Windus (London, England), 1992. Revelations: The Clergy Questioned, H. Hamilton (London, England), 1994 So yes, a setup. If anyone bothers to actually comb the internet for actual Western volunteers at Mother Theresa's org in Calcutta they'd find overwhelmingly positive experiences by volunteers of every religious stripe. But alas we believe what we want so I don't expect much conversion. The Hitchens and their believers will just have to be water off Catholics' backs.

The first time I saw her on TV I screamed ran to a closet and hid until they switched off the TV. For years I couldn’t look at her face, then I went to a Catholic secondary school, where I saw her image AGAIN I felt like I was going to pass out. I don’t know why I felt this way, but in my early 20s I found out the truth! She was a cover up, involved in trafficking and selling babies. For some strange reason this story is brushed under the rug. My spirit of discernment was strong in childhood, even stronger in adulthood. She had travelled to the U.S. for one thing or another and, while there, she had ‘toured’ a newly opened men’s residence of some sort (like a homeless shelter or a Salvation Army recovery house or something) in New York City. Big news event. She single handedly decided that those men did not need the ‘lavish’ extras of beds, dressers, rugs, etc. one shot showed beds being lowered out of the windows to the street. She stated that all they needed was a mattress on the floor and nothing else in their rooms. For some reason her belief was their command and these men were stripped of any normalcy or dignity. It was then reported that afterward she had boarded a private plane to return to Europe. No one seemed to have any problem with that. I remember thinking “then why isn’t she rowing herself back across the Atlantic?” I never saw her as a “saintly” person after that episode and most people I knew for many years after would take affront when I criticized her so-called sainthood.

All my life i adored respected and was a follower of Mother Teresa till the age of 22 That's when during one of my conversations about how divine and godly Mother Teresa was, that one of my friend from Calcutta who actually overhead my conversation told me the absolute truth about her, and this was back in 2007 and it was hard for me to belive him at that time. And then i researched on my own and found out that my friend was actually telling the truth She was actually just a person who wanted to spread Christianity and for that she used the poor and their sufferings, she equated the sufferings of the poor to that of the curcifixion of Christ and made the poor belive that their suffering was for a divine cause and for path to paradise and to Jesus Christ She let them suffer and die even if proper medical care could have saved many of them, she would even take the children from the streets and the first thing she would do is baptise them to Christianity and then only took care of them, she just wanted to buy her place in heave, that's all she did
@zs20012 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say she was selfish to the extent of doing all that just to buy a place in heaven. I'm sure there would've been easier ways to 'buy a place in heaven' than to work tirelessly in a far-off country instead of just proselytizing nearby masses or simply serving in the church. That being said, I think she actually believed her religion and its ways to be the absolute truth to the extent of forgetting all rationality. It's this fervent adherence to her beliefs, howsoever wrong they might have been, that made her blind to the reality of the people she was supposed to be caring for. I do not think there was any malice or ill-intent involved. Then again, one can only speculate...

That's appallingly to say the least. A true Christian is supposed to encourage hope to the needy and not dwell on their already sorry state. Jesus came and died so that we could have life. He came so we can have a better future. If He wanted us to suffer, then why did He heal the sick, let the blind see and let the the mute speak? If what Theresa did is true, then she'd be answerable to God. "Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life" -John 8:12 Jesus died so that those who are suffering won't suffer anymore. Theresa is wrong. That's not Christianity.

You know as part of her canonization process the Vatican actually brought Hitchens in to argue as "Devils Advocate" and found his objections unfounded? St. Theresa was called by Christ to accompany and comfort the dying, not necessarily to heal them. And comforting the dying is one of the corporal works of mercy. The secular world lashes out at her because they have no way of understanding how suffering can be a good thing. Even for most Christians the idea of uniting our suffering to Christ is not easy to understand. She reached out to people society had deemed untouchable. Keep in mind also that the objections raised in the video are mostly based on the accounts of two people who clearly had a personal ax to grind.

"Mother Teresa wanted people to live in impoverished conditions so she could identify with the poor whom she's serving." ― Bill Donahue, President of the Catholic League “Mother Teresa was not a friend of the poor. She was a friend of poverty. She said that suffering was a gift from God. She spent her life opposing the only known cure for poverty, which is the empowerment of women and the emancipation of them from a livestock version of compulsory reproduction.” ― Christopher Hitchens
