All I've used the control panel for was when a game didn't have frame limiter so I put the maximum framrate to 200 instead of running it uncapped at 900+FPS and 99% utilisation constantly. It was also useful to turn on/off Vsync in some games where it caused problems with either jittering or heavy input delays.
@shivamverma71519 ай бұрын
yes same here, i use the amd radeon software (amd equivalent of nvidia control panel) to limit my fps to 60 on GTA vice city, because the in-game one limits it to 30 and when uncap it runs at 500 which has issues like cars are always braking themselves and you can push cars by running into them.

I do the same, I put NVC Global limit to 144 to match my refresh, then I use RTSS per-app limit of 60-144 (usually 90 FPS) to tweak individual games. This keeps menu FPS below 2000 and makes sure my frametimes are very tight, usually around 12-17ms no matter what I'm playing. I stopped messing with NVC settings years ago but things like DLDSR, resolution and video color settings are all good to tweak and setup to your preference. And as you said it's useful to force stop Vsync or ensure 16x anisotropic gets applied if in-game doesn't include it, etc In my experience Unity games are the easiest to "optimize" with ini edits, thread priority, etc But none of that is accomplished in control panel.

The only good return I have had from Nvidia Control Panel was where I had severe screen tearing due to a mismatch between refresh ratio of my monitor (144hz) and the arbitrary FPS lock (60 FPS) I set for Forza Horizon 5 through Nvidia Control Panel (You cannot use 30/60/120 locks in the game with a 144hz monitor, it will be 48/72/144). Disabling the trilinear optimization from Nvidia Control Panel fixed the tearing issue for me in that game.
@shadesoftime5 ай бұрын
It's not a "trilinear optimization", it's "triple buffering", which means having 3 buffers to which frames are drawn so that a buffer not currently being changed can be displayed without any tears (those appear when the monitor is showing a buffer where part is the old frame and another part is the new frame that wasn't done rendering). "Trilinear filtering" is another word you might have seen in the panel and it's one of the cheaper options for mipmap texture filtering

One solution is to ensure your FPS never drops below your refresh rate. If your frames are dropping because of this, it's wise to lower your resolution until your frames are stable.

@@saviourr69 hey I'm not exactly an expert, but from what I know reflex should be set to "ultra" (if you have a good gpu like 20/30/40 series) or just "on" if you have a lower end GPU. Shadercache won't impact much but when set to low amounts can cause stutters, you can set it to 10gb, or if you have a hard drive with lower capacity (like 250 gb or 120gb) set the shadercache to a lower amount
@Tryptaminedm10 ай бұрын
@@natto6157You are confusing Reflex (in-game only settings) with the low latency mode setting found in Nvidia control panel. In every game that supports Reflex, you should 100% have it enabled as it is by far our best option and it overrides the NVCP setting. HOWEVER, what most of these idiots always seem to recommend is to set Low latency mode in NVCP to "ultra" which INCREASES latency instead of decreasing it in MOST games, because it is completely bugged, and simultaneously decreases your FPS by altering the render queue. Look up videos of actual latency testing with advanced hardware on YT - you will see. Sometimes it will literally 2x input latency. Instead, set low latency mode to "on", vertical sync to OFF (increases latency), G-sync enabled, and frame cap in-game (#1 choice) or per individual game in NVCP settings (#2 choice) to a comfortable FPS that your system can sustain without stuttering which will happen usually when it hits 100% GPU usage even at 100+ FPS. In single player games, just frame cap to where your GPU is below 100% usage like 90% of the time, and 100% of the time for competitive games. I autistically self-tested every setting mentioned here, it's definitely the best configuration 9/10 times.

@@saviourr69 The shader cache is only used the first time a shader is built when running a game. The next time the game wants the same shader it will pull it from the cache rather than building it again. @@saviourr69Reflex ingame and low latency mode from NVCP they are the same tech afterall. the reason why Reflex is better is because Reflex doesn't need to travel to the game pipeline it's already in the game while Low latency mode needs to go the game pipeline in order to reduce latency which is slow.

That is setting the 'nvdrsdb0.bin' and 'nvdrsdb1.bin' files(by default in 'C:\ProgramData\NVIDIA Corporation\Drs\') to READ-ONLY mode after making any changes as games can override settings. This ensures the settings stick and are forced to work. There are also other factors to consider such as rising heat of hardware(and also room temperature) on subsequent runs, and the fact that after starting a game once already, it will load up faster/run smoother the next startup as a lot of it is in memory(can reset that manually for example using ISLC). The room temperature thing isn't so easily fixable.

Shader cache helps a ton in some games, like in modded skyrim n stuff. Default value should really be 10gb out of the box, i think default is 4gb? Also power control mode to max perf just doesnt let the card to run at idle clocks so higher power usage when idle and higher GPU temp too. Might help with older games and reduce latency a bit as well.

Low Latency Mode Ultra + Maximum Peformance Power Mode + G-Sync + V-Sync Fast in NvCP > RivaTuner 3 FPS cap below max refresh > in game V-Sync. I've done a ton of testing personally over the past few months and this has rendered the best result in games where you can't get double your monitors refresh rate consistently such as Borderlands 3, Call of Duty and Fortnite. Tested on 40 series card.

why fast vsync and not just on?
@xTroubleShooter10 ай бұрын
@@TheJacobi As stated in the panel, V-sync on limits the GPU render rate to your max refresh rate. It is good for tearing but can cause (minimally) longer latency and stutters. Fast renders unconstrained and delivers latency that is closer to V-sync off. This in combination with V-sync on in games or/and a frame rate cap (Rivatuner recommended) makes your GPU work the hardest with the least tearing.

You're totally right! Nvidia settings don't really change FPS much. People with lower-end hardware should pay attention to stuff like unnecessary processes running in the background. That can actually help improve FPS. Tweaking Nvidia Control Panel settings might just give you a placebo effect at most. So, big thanks, brother, for making this video. As a small creator, you've done a terrific job and you were straight to the point.
@benfrese357310 ай бұрын
There is to note that there ARE settings that can have an impact. Especially the "Max Prerendered Frames" (now called Low Latency Mode) which, as far as I understand it, would decrease input lag at the cost of hitting the CPU harder since the frame buffer is lower. So when the CPU can't deliver fast enough Low Latency Mode might result in stutters (I have that in Elden Ring where the CPU is already under pressure, so turning of LLM helps with stutters on my R5 3600) All that said: great video and please keep on Myth-Busting!

It just lowers the number of frames stored in the frame buffer so that they don't stack up, it doesn't make CPU work harder
@benfrese357310 ай бұрын
@@kennybust Well that might be true, but it makes a slow CPU more obvious since the buffer is gone. So the CPU might not work harder, but it still leads to stuttering that can be avoided with more pre-rendered frames/low latency mode OFF.

@3borsresistance5515 ай бұрын
VSync should never be on for using FreeSync or GSync. VSync means that the GPU will wait for the VSync signal of the Monitor till flipping the image buffer, thus displaying a new image. GSync and FreeSync on the other hand take a new image at any time and as soon as they have a new image they will try to display it, limited by the refresh rate of the monitor (and the GSync / FreeSync capabilities). VSync off allows for FreeSync or GSync. If you disable VSync though and don't have FreeSync or GSync, you'll get screen tear, as the monitor won't synchronize to when the GPU flips the image buffer and might just start a new image in the middle of displaying the old one.

You’re right about the misinformation surrounding tuning. I recently tried out NVIDIA’s free tuning app, which is still in beta. I installed it because I wanted to see what it could do. After setting it up, I played COD and noticed some stuttering. I couldn’t figure out why, but I followed the app’s recommendations for the game settings. Later, while adjusting my FPS settings, I saw that the NVIDIA app had enabled on-demand texture streaming. This feature actually reduced my frames and caused lag, which is why I was experiencing that stuttering. So, I uninstalled the app. It wasn’t worth it. I’ll stick to in-game settings and NVIDIA’s default settings, which seem to work best for me.

I am someone who enjoys tinkering with settings and benchmarking to see the difference (I love fact checking), and it absolutely annoys the hell out of me how every time I just simply install a driver, turn on DLSS Quality, cap the frame rate to my monitor (or half cause I can use Frame Gen) and I have perfect performance, low temps, low latency, and zero issues. I do not open Control Panel, I don't tinker with Rebar, no registry edits, none of that other crap.

Of course don’t forget to enable Gsync in the control panel. Vsync and frame rate limiter used with gsync is also worth it for the ultra smooth tear free experience in my opinion except for super competitive games where you actually care about the latency (I can’t tell the difference in latency with it off but I sure can see the tearing and that is very distracting and makes your framerate look way lower than it is). Other than that there isn’t much of a reason to touch the control panel again.

The only tweaks that truly matter are actually specific to a few very one-off, but not unheard of use cases which have nothing to do with game performance. The first example of these applies if you're using a combo of both a VRR monitor as well as have a 4000-series card, and has to do with preventing a frame pacing bug specific to DLSS3. Firstly, to get the best experience with DLSS3/Frame gen while running VRR, you want to actually force V-Sync on in the control panel, and disable it in the game. If you don't do this, there can be issues with both frame pacing as well as screen tearing when running games that use frame gen. This is actually documented in Nvidia's drive release guides, and to my knowledge is supposed to be fixed in a future driver update not needing this workaround, but to my knowledge has not yet been corrected. In either case, letting the driver handle v-sync as opposed to the game is typically a better solution, simply because many game devs do not do a good job of implementing v-sync correctly, which can cause issues with VRR not engaging correctly in certain titles. The 2nd tweak which is optional, is whether you prefer to use low-latency mode or not, which is another tweak specific to VRR monitors. Setting low latency mode to Ultra, basically prioritizes frames to be queued instantly, which decreases the millisecond delay related to input and total system latency, at the cost of overall average framerate. (This setting is kind of similar to reflex, but is technically not the exact same thing) So basically, setting low latency to ultra is preferable in any sort of competitive or fast-paced game (FPS, boomer shooters, etc), as it will slightly decrease your overall average input latency, at the cost of leaving a few frames per second on the table. (In the default mode, frames are queued which increases overall latency but can result in a higher average frames per second). If the game is slower paced or insanely demanding, setting this to off may be preferable, but the main thing to note is that Ultra mode will also cap your FPS at slightly below it's refresh rate, to stay in the VRR sweet zone that avoids true v-sync and keeps you in g-sync/VRR mode which has better input latency. That FPS value is typically going to be around 116FPS on a 120hz, or 224FPS on a 240hz, for reference. Outside these tweaks, the 3rd minor tweak that is relevant in certain scenarios, would be enabling DXGI swapchain. This is only needed in certain games when running specific post-processing injection on titles that aren't natively running DX12 or Vulkan, such as Special K HDR injection, or Reshade/RTGI injection -- some games simply need this enabled to prevent crashing or to get it to boot successfully without crashing. There is also a more advanced tweak for this that can only be used in NV Inspector, which involves manually changing the hidden setting OGL_DX_PRESENT_DEBUG to a specific hex offset that can be used to force compatability in games that otherwise would crash with Special K. Outside of these, you shouldn't be messing with any setting in Nvidia control panel, unless you know what you're doing or for these very specific use cases I've mentioned.
@Hyokkuda10 ай бұрын
That is 100% true, with a few exceptions for various reasons. If your monitor has GSync, you don't need VSync, so you can disable that to actually save some FPS. VSync is supposed to eliminate screen tearing at the cost of performance, while GSync does the same without performance cost because of built-in hardware inside the monitor. Too bad it's not set automatically. If a game does not have an FPS limiter, you can force it through the control panel, but it shouldn't be set to global due to higher latency for certain games. Software and driver limiter is actually slower than in-game settings. Everything else doesn't need to be touched. Power management set to maximum performance is terrible if set under global, especially on laptops. Bearing fans are not eternal; they will wear out quicker if they keep going at full speed due to the maximum performance enabled. The same goes for fans set at full speed. It's nice to have a cooler laptop or desktop, but the lifespan of the fans will be greatly reduced.
