Here in my part of the Philippines, the expats who don't know each other seem to ignore each other. Not even a nod when passing in public. I'm fine with that. Everyone had their reason to leave the West and many don't want to bring it with them. I have some expat friends, but they are people I have met and vetted in social settings. My biggest reason for not speaking much with other Americans is that they invariably bring up politics. I left the US in part because I hated the politics.

Guys try to reinvent themselves when they come here because they didnt like thenselves back home, which i am all for, but then they just make up lies instead of actually improving. So, ive met 36 navy seals, 70 millionairs, and guys with mansions on the beach... when in reality they live in soneones attic and cant afford furniture.. sad reality of the world, having to keep up with the jonses to impress strangers. It’s ultimately not being happy with your lot and incredible jealousy, maybe you’ve a nice house or nicer car or maybe your partner is the bomb. It will be just an excuse for something for them to pick on…I’ve had run ins, with all my neighbours from them impacting on us. Like for example completely floating rules of where we live and lying openly about it. To digging 1000 sqm plot without any permissions and causing me $1000’s to correct the medium term problem(currently he’s going have a huge fine by the local authority) but these guys are Usually US military with poor Filipina partners ..as stated they cannot do anything to locals so they think it’s ok with other foreigners..downright weird. Most guys here have a jaded passed but hide it.

I had lived in China for eight years as an ESL teacher and two years in Thailand having retired. In China, I think the two biggest issues I had with co-workers and others were foreigner superiority complexes (having to prove themselves as better than others), and cultural/political divides. Here in Thailand, it seems that foreigners just want to keep to themselves and do their own thing. Even to return a pleasant hello or good morning is too much for them. Usually, their heads are facing down to the ground or oblivious to their surroundings due to whatever is being pumped into their head through earphones. On another note in that I see a problem with expats...nationalism. When you hear where someone is from, automatically the stereotypes and prejudices arise. As an American, I get this a lot. As if the other person's home country doesn't have a checkered history and flaws in moral compasses, therefore their country is the best in the world. With that mentality, I have no idea what the hell they are doing traveling the world to escape whatever it is from their home country. One final thing...I seriously believe each and every expat is mentally damaged in some manner. We are all running away from something in our past, or trying to find something that makes us whole. Usually, it is not a place that will fix that emptiness or deficiency, so they continue to wallow in the mud that they brought with them.

I noticed Ex Pats live in kind of closed in communities over there. They either attract like people or possibly gravitate toward others just for convenience and adopt behaviors of the others. Just some thoughts after living there. The negative bad people.. These guys seem to want to make an impression on others.. almost to make themselves feel better... 1. Scenario Number .. I live here (VS )You are just visiting... Little subtle passive aggression. 2. Do you have a gf here? Seems innocent but some of these guys want to show how dedicated they are so they tell their gf that you are a player so this sick individual makes his poor gf think hes emotionally protecting her. 3. Dysfunctional drinking. After some of these guys see how often ppl drink in the Phils...Its like their permission slip. 4. Avoiding meaningful interactions with locals to the point that they become suspicious or jaded. Trying to learn the language is such a huge plus. 5. I mean this respectfully. A lot of Expats are Ex Military.. Most people would tell you the military culture is often full of heavy drinking and aggression with hazing and abuse built in. Ask them. 6. The heirarchy.. Hottest gf...Little Ford Truck..Own house.... Some of these guys their whole circle and house is their life.....Unhealthy lifestyles surrounded by adventure and a great Ocean and they dont even go to the beach,,, 7. I salute Black people. because at least in the Philippines they still acknowlegde people. White Americans really have nothing in common with Europeans and they often dont speak to us. 8. Youre just trying to live but if youre in ok shape and semi happy and decent looking and enjoy interacting with other people...Some people see that as competition. 9. Jealousy.. 10. Asking questions in the presence of others just to judge or shame you with their plethora of experience.. meanwhile the guy is sitting by his wife in the house he can never leave and every day he dreams to cheat on his Wife...Yah I met these guys..... 11. dating vs budget is trrue

Maybe expats are prone to hate each other is based on the circumstance that here on the island their circle of friends and acquaintances is suddenly much smaller compared to back home? This is especially true, if the expat has no interest to communicate with locals. So his world has shrunken significantly, which might cause some stress due to loneliness, which translates into more aggressive behavior. Just a hypothesis. Sometimes they call it "food for thought" 😁

Sounds great as allot of us expats here like to pay it forward and help out some in the community but be aware their are very specific rules even to volunteer as you can only do so much without stepping on toes as they can consider it taking work away from a Filipino. so research and reach out to organizations you wish to help. I own a contracting business USA but over here I offer consultations and advice about my experience as it is free but if i start doing actual work then i can get my butt in a sling. So reach out to organizations like I did for Habitat to humanity. Enjoy and be open-minded and just take your time, slow down as it takes awhile to adapt, adjust and accept how it can be different here as Patience is tested. And you might also find life is even busier as you deal with "The Learning Curve" aas i refer to it making your best life here and finding out where to go to make that happen. Like where to get foods you like, or the best gym for exercise you like, or even which pizza joint has toppings and sauce you like. Information is power and having Filipino friends to guide you is as important if not more so then some expat who is in a bubble or only has limited knowledge. I can learn more in a afternoon hanging out with my girlfriends Dad then 20 lunch dates with expats.

I live where I have seen 3 white guys and 1 black guy in the past 9 months. A head nod was the only thing exchanged. But, as you stand in line at airport immigration, the same demographic numbers, most people in the foreign passport line are indistinguishable from filipinos. So, there are likely many more expats that blend in than white or black people. Anywhose, seeking expats in a foreign country is an unnecessary activity in my opinion. I focus on my woman, my dogs, and the occasionall interaction with people who live around me.

Just look at it this way...in America, everyone sues everyone...in the PI, there is no malpractice insurance for medical diagnosis errors, and so on. Lots of folks from other countries find this amusing. Americans LOVE conflict. This does not mean the PI is perfect. For example, I saw a recent KZbin on foreigners being scammed on home build projects and this made me very sad. Also, foreigner price is a reality. Today, I made an inquiry on a price and the Filipino said 150K PHP, but 250K PHP for you. "Take it or leave it." What rational person would expect this approach to result in an exchange or yield a profitable outcome? I have been here 5 months and do not really have any foreigner that I would consider a close friend. Spending almost 100% of my time with my Filipina and some time with her family. Very wonderful! I thought I met a fellow foreigner I could call a close friend, but he is arrogant and an "exploder" and treats his Filipina horribly, yelling "f*ck you" at her all the time, so I stay in touch, but tend to maintain a safe distance. He actually did this in front of me a few times. Very sad. She spent the day with us today and use us as a release valve, I guess. She is a nervous wreck and walking on eggshells. I am not a psychologist and do not understand many of the behaviors I observe. Anyway, stay well.

My Filipino girlfriend laughed so hard when she saw me doing it; i was embarrassed and then once she tried my concoction she actually liked it then invited me over for a Fish soup and her Dad made his homemade soup so i ended up leaving with a new recipe. haha.. I like your touching on more in depth thoughts and attitudes as it is something that isn't talked as much about as I bet you'd be an interesting person to hang out with.

You just earned a sub and holy god I hope this video blows up. This need to be talked about morel. I'm glad you're not part of the same KZbin expat vlogger plagiarism culture (same recycled topics, identical thumbnails, misrepresentation of western expat life in Asia). You hit the nail on the head near the beginning. Just like 2000s era reality tv (and today's full time social media influencers) attracted the most narcissistic and greedy from the general population to participate, I'd love to see a study comparing rates of personality disorders among expats vs. the general pop (back in their home countries). If there's one item where my lived experience has been different from yours (I'm currently in Thailand), it's how so many entitled western expats look down on and are rude to locals. And the most entitled people I've seen give off total losers/toxic back home. I get the feeling their home countries eventually got tired of their act, they had no more bridges to burn or people to use, so they booked a one way ticket to a country where their lack of social or job skills could still let them live on $1000/mo (especially if they churn out low quality clickbait content on the regular to keep the electricity on). Of course not all expats are like this. For some it's just geo arbitrage when they have a stable online career with western salaries (their personalities can be anywhere on the spectrum). Others are responsible retirees who saved up decent nest eggs. But at the cost of making my own stay in these countries more restrictive, I hope southeast Asia someday does a better job screening out a lot of these losers coming just to exploit the local population while demanding to be treated like royalty.

Life in the US is not real, as in we have lived with certain protections from situations that will no longer be there in a third world country. The culture is delusional because of this. There are a lot of adjustments and learning to do, and us old people are a bit slow at this, so TAKE YOUR TIME to adjust. Give it THREE years. Don't make hasty decisions like buy a house or get MARRIED! You've got a LOT of adjusting to do. Slow down and enjoy it.

Before watching I’m assuming that too many expats will undoubtedly skyrocket prices up. El Nido restaurants are super expensive bc of tourists so expats living there is just gonna hurt more. I also believe maybe a lot of expats are more type a personality and do not integrate with Filipinos and adopt the culture, or they want to get away from last culture and don’t want them foreignizing the local scene

Great topic, the problem is most are simply not happy with their lot and are incredibly jealous, it’s 10x worse than back in the west and your dealing with a lot of guys that have Walter Mittey’s syndrome 😂. I’m sorry to say alot of very low class individuals with poor Filipina..maybe running away from the west. The amount of guys that have absconded from their responsibilities back in their home countries, you can see that from the many KZbinrs that have a similar situation. Just something you have to deal with here ..the green eyed monster.

This is one thing i've noticed in my 20 yrs of expat exp. Seems to me as ppl age, MANY go into "negative mode". The term "grumpy old man/women" would apply here. Im guessing its due to one or a combo of various characteristics/criteria/etc: 1) Aging causes health/vitality problems (sure, it can be minimized by doing fitness, eating right, no smoking, none to little alcohol, etc), but we all still age, and will eventually die. its a 100% fact. thus it brings a "withering away" psychological/spiritual aspect to living. 2) Assumption of being given respect simply b/c one is older, lived there longer in the country, etc. Many fail to learn that respect is EARNED, not given. (e.g. I simply wont respect some foul mouthed, boozer, who is elderly simply because he/she is older than me. Not Happening). 3) Ego. Self-centered/ self serving. (self explanatory). 4) "Boo-mer Mentality" Im better than you in every aspect. I deserve to be treated like royalty, while I treat you like cr-ap....AND I expect you to simply grin and bear it. (ties in with others on list.)

Unfortunately it’s a human trait that we will do bad things if we think there are no consequences, coupled with the fact that most expats are not the cream of the crop to start with. Many have all the issues you mention as well as being financially strapped, unable to have a good lifestyle in their home country (let’s be honest, we are talking about Americans, despite their super strong currency)

Re "sense of dominion", it's quite legitimate in some cases. Yeah the house & farm are in the wife's name, but as long as they are together they are treated as one person by the tax code, 13a visas, balikbayan privileges. Some of these guys are seriously dangerous to mess with, armed, connected & know who to pay how much to get rid of a problem. There's a dark underbelly you may avoid by luck or a guardian angel, but it's there & some guys walk the line.
