EU is just as bad, thats why I was cautious and not glazing the EU when they forced apple to go to usb-c connector. They don’t care about individual rights they’re just willing to boss around these companies because they are by and large US companies not EU ones so there is no bad blood domestically.

The worst thing about the Apple story is that a backdoor would mostly only impact small crime. Larger groups already don't use these off-the-shelf solutions used by everyone. Remember how they busted that crime ring in Australia (iirc?) by selling them bugged "encrypted" devices? Same with data storage. Why would big criminals use default encryption when they can (and probably already are) using independent solutions.

I doubt Apple was the only one that got the letter, I'd assume every major cloud storage provider got the same request. If that's true and they aren't talking about withdrawing from the UK, they are compromised.

In the UK the argument is we need to got after criminals by backdoors in encryption & access to everyone's bank accounts. The truth is the criminals & money launderers are hardly ever affected because the authorities go after the low hanging fruit i.e. the average citizen.

Please like and raise awareness about the fact Microsoft Edge has the same functionality as Honey about finding coupons at the browser level, no extension necesary. If someone wants to investigate, I recommend to stop updating an instance of Edge to preserve aplication code.

It's pretty obvious that the move on Apple is a Five Eyes one rather than just the UK. Not really a case you could get through US courts system, but UK law is much more vulnerable. Apple should pull out of UK. UK politicians LOVE iPhones and would cave quickly.

Do you not realise they have access to that type/level of encryption. Thats why you dont hear them moaning about it. Years ago, I forget his name but some guy Phil Zimmerman IIRC created PGP or pretty good privacy using public private key encryption. They hounded him so much until he gave them a back door into it. Any encryption they dont have access to, they keep on at companies until they give in and give them a back door.

So what happens when you use your Apple devices for years thinking it is encrypted, and suddenly it is demanded by and released to the government? Who "accidentally" or purposefully release it to health insurance agencies? Because it's in the best interest of the government to deny you coverage for pre-existing conditions when applying for government subsidized medical insurance? Keep your iPhone for every day stuff, but use a de-googled phone and get a Garmin watch that allows you to use any name or other personal details you want for your health tracking... and delete your health data once a year and start over with a new Garmin account and new name, etc.. Delete it more often if you think you would look bad if your health data was released to health insurance.

I'm unfortunately not eligible for ADP because I'm stuck with an old iPad Mini 4 that I can't get rid of for the time being, and the iPad Mini 4 went out of support before ADP was added, so even though I use my iPad Mini 5 and not my iPad Mini 4 I can't enable ADP on my Apple ID. :(

Jeez dude. It's NOT that complicated. You literally say you don't use your Mini 4. So simply REMOVE/LOGOUT of your Apple ID on the Mini 4. Tada!!! Now you're eligible to enable ADP on your remaining "eligible" Apple hardware (eg. your Mini 5). Like I said. It's not that complicated of a problem to solve. If you still wanna use your Mini 4 with cloud services then just register a new throwaway AppleID to use with the Mini 4.

@@EricS-uf9mv I use my iPad Mini 4 as a backup for my 2fa backup codes and secrets, and a secondary Trusted Device on my Apple ID. If I sign out, it won't sync whenever I add new backup codes or secrets, or download new 2fa apps, and it won't receive Apple 2fa codes. Hence, can't get rid of it yet. One day, when I can finally get a new iPad, I can finally replace that old thing. (And dw all the 2fa docs are independently encrypted)

One thing about DOGE accessing treasury payments systems is that Elon now has (among other data) a list of all government contractors, which means he can sell that list to U.S. adversaries so they have a verified list of whom to target with their cyberattacks in order to gain access to sensitive/classified data.

That story about DOGE does seem like a nonsense to me. I dont see how it is different from employing a new federal employees or a contractor. Let's not forget that Snowden had full access to some of the most sensitive intelligence from NSA and he wasnt even a government employee. So from the privacy point of view it is not different from previous administrations. However, this would be completly avoided if the government didnt collect so much info about us in the first place.

It exists exclusively because Trump, via executive order, renamed the existing United States Digital Service to United States DOGE Service and created within it the U.S. DOGE Service Temporary Organization, which is tasked with "advancing the President's 18-month DOGE agenda". That executive order requires every agency to create a DOGE team of at least four employees in consultation with USDS to implement the president's DOGE agenda. None of that was authorized by Congress.
