Ok, all 3 of these look really good. And I'm loving the idea of chopped pear in sticky rice.

When they asked if adding barbecue sauce to okonomiyaki is 'tradish' I actually had a moment where I realized that this challenge is literally perfect for the spirit of Okonomiyaki. While crepe dishes in Japan have existed in one form or another since the 1800s and have evolved, Okonomiyaki as we know it today was invented during World War II when rice rationing and scarcity forced Japanese families to think outside the box for bulking out meals. It's evolved over the years (a restaurant in Osaka claims they were the first to add mayo in 1946) but Okonomiyaki is just 'as you like, grilled.' So, in a sense, by making it into a store-cupboard challenge dish, that is about as close to the original spirit of Okonomiyaki and its mother-of-invention origins. So well done, Jaime.

Why I’m instantly freaked out when Jamie said that he is gonna do Okonomiyaki?

Other East Asians can chime in, but I've never seasoned rice in my life.

I'm Chinese and yea we just eat it as is. Rice and water into the rice cooker and that's it 🤤

As a South Asian I can confirm we don’t season either.

South East Asian here and yep. We also don't season rice.

Hong Kong here and yea, it's just water to cook rice. The flavour comes from the food you're eating the rice with. I'm glad other people have clocked this too. I think western palettes don't quite understand white rice still.

I actually like this change in battle format with the chefs commentating from the sidelines on one normal at a time. The editing ups the drama and while sabotage between the boys can be funny I prefer watching them intently focused on their creations.

I don't think there are any youtube channels I know that do their sponsorships better. You're transparant (which is really appreciate), but they also just lead to good videos. An artificial restriction makes a good cooking challenge

That amount of bacon is even too little for Japanese standard! Also, you forgot some ao-nori (nori-powder)!

He did add it at 13:37 but my gripe with this is that it doesn't use Okonomi sauce or even an approximation of it. That with the lack of tenkasu, yamaimo or dashi in there kinda makes it too far away from okonomiyaki to be any kind of authentic. Also, definitely agree there should have been way more bacon on there, or even ebi, corn or just something. It was far too plain.
