Sorry but this is a pet peeve of mine. On a tube amp (or good amp) the volume doesn’t control the volume level like your tv volume does, it’s more like a voice, your tube amp doesn’t want to scream quietly. The key to a good amp sounds is too get as much gain from your volume knob then dial in the right amount on the gain knob. I see too many people with big amps put the volume low and the gain high and wonder why they sound like mud and get buried by my smaller amp with the reverse: V high and G low. So when setting up you should keep your gain low and increase the volume as high as you can then increase gain if needed. Again sorry for the rant (yes i’m Canadian).

Unfortunately, if you're gonna use one of the currently made woosie microphones (except the Bulletini) you have to crank the gain up to get the distortion you want. I do set my amps exactly the way you say because I use very powerful old microphones that supply their own crunch without cranking up the gain or using a pedal board with numerous goofball pedals all over it (I just use one cheap pedal for delay only).

Thanks for the vid. Any advice for left-handed players? I cup it the same way, but the active (left) hand is now at the low end of the comb. Maybe I should start holding the harp upside down? Any suggestions?

The SM58 is pretty difficult to hold. It depends whether you want an acoustic tone or a dirty tone. For acoustic the Audix Fireball should be quite small and easy to hold. For dirty tone I would recommend the Hohner Harp Blaster.
