If you put the grate in the pot laying on its side, then you have an oven as well. The grate acts as a baking rack and you can put that over a fire or firebox and put embers around the pot to bake evenly.

Very nice kit. Lately, I am finding myself gravitating towards videos that demonstrate the use of their cook kits. I am impressed at the ingenuity that some have in using them in the field. And you get cool meal ideas as well. Would love to see you do a similar video. Take care.

In Australia we normally just call it a billy. Also, to add further information to the history of billies, there are hundreds of Australian Indigenous languages. Billa may mean water in one of them but not all of them. A billabong is a pond in the Australian vernacular. Perhaps the etymology is linked to that?

We just call them Billies in Australia. I have a little kettle virtually identical with yours. I don't know that I'd bother with it when I had the Zebra billy. Good video, thanks. I hope all goes well with the weather for you.

I keep inside my Billy pot a Trangia mini set together with a Firebox Nano kit, Primula coffee filter, a mini Guyot set for cooking/eating, Coghlans mini salt/pepper shaker, tiny dish cloth and a foldable MSR long spoon. All inside the Billy pot.the Guyot set can be converted into tongs by adding a ranger band and a twig (a little tricky but works). If you drill holes on the top (not bottom) of the tray that comes with the pot you can use it as a steamer, season it and still can be a frying pan or plate. Amazing how much you can fit and how versatile it can be.

the small grate you have can be used inside your billy can if you turn the pot sideways in the fire and bake in it. I have the 16 cm billy can and am waiting on the 10 cm. I have made soup in the bigger one for a group camp and have used the pan that came with it as a warming dish as well as an eating dish

I recently viewed a video by a British Gentleman who owns several sizes of Zebra pots. He drilled small holes (looked to be around 1/4" inch) in the center and around the first bottom ring of the pan that fit his Zebra. This was done to the pan in his largest pot. You will find the the pan from the next size down will nest nicely inside your larger pots inner pan. You now have the means to steam veggies and still have a pan to fry in or for use as a plate etc. For steaming, also be sure to drill a hole or two in the lid to allow excess steam to escape. The Gentleman I mentioned did this in the depression on both sides of the lids handle. You will not notice the modification to the lid.

I grab gear off my shelf for each trip and then unpack a lot of it when I get home, especially my coffee/cook kits. I have my go-to gear (usually the cheapest/easiest to replace) but I use it all. I checked Malcolm's site and he has the coffee pouch right now, but not the Billy Pot pouch. If you talk to Steve at Firebox, I think he will sell you just the clips still. If not, their version of the pots work flawlessly once they break in and are worth a couple extra bucks for those clips alone. Buy the size you don't have yet and just move those clips to the one you use most. I have the 16cm and bag (actually two w/the included accessory pouch) from Firebox and love them. I still need to get the 12.

A real billy pot is a minimalist approach, just a tin to boil water ,heat stews etc. In other words one bucket for everything. What you've created is a mess kit.
