In this video we take a look at the items that I use when cooking in camp. I was asked by a few people about the items that I use, so I thought whilst the weather was settled, I would get out and make a quick video. I would also like to wish all of the subscribers a very Merry Christmas and hope you all have a great time. I have put links below to some of the main kit featured in the video.

Love your vids! for those who don't know, Decathlon sell a really great stainless steel 400ml mug that's great for boiling water in, boiled eggs, cooking baked beans etc, folding/butterfly handle, light weight, and best of all £3.49! cheers.

@@markbailey2981 Just wish they'd do a slightly bigger one at a similarly reasonable price, the 400ml one even has markings stamped into it at 100ml intervals, the handle stays cool even when water is boiling, a cheap 600 or 750ml version would be awesome.

Hi Nikki, I hope you are keeping well :) Many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment as always. Yeah both frying pans are great. The trangia is easier to deal with, but the Bromwell is a more tradition type that needs looking after but will last a life time. May I take this opportunity to wish you and your family a lovely Christmas too. Have a good time, all the best, Mark :)

Hi Victor, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Yeah the mesh rings are easy to make and come in handy. I used a small sheet of cheap stainless steel I bought of eBay. I simply cut it to size and rolled it around a water bottle. They can be stretched or compressed to fit any bottle, then open up again to fit around the stove. I hope you have a great New Year too Victor..… thanks again, Mark :)

Mark Bailey a sheet of holed stainless 3mmx5mm (300x100mm) is now £7.99 . Well it was 10 years ago may still be worth it as long as don’t need any cutter to get right size. Very good idea though as it makes it a very lightweight. Many thanks and seasonal greetings to you. Think that looks the right size? Or you can buy the A4 sheet and make 2 if you can cut it like your original for a little more money

Great video, I'm watching a lot of this kind of thing while I'm in lockdown in the desert. I use Zebra pots myself, A good modification on the Zebra pots, it so dremel off the rivet and remove the bail, then replace it with Bowden Cable (Brake cable) It makes the pots a bit easier to pack, and the handle stays upright when cooking in the fire, plus Zebra also make bowls that match the pots, and nest on the recess on the lid (Zebra also make that MSR pot, and you can find it without the MSR branding for significantly less money) I also usually carry a couple of feet of brass chain (Sink plug chain) for hanging pots over a fire, infinite adjustment for cooking, and nice and light.

Hi Graham, I hope you are keeping well :) Many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I will have to try the mod on the billy pot. I have a Dremel and a couple of lengths of wire (a bit thicker than brake cable) but the same construction. I agree, it would make packing them easier. I sometimes use the canvas bags to store them in and its the handle that makes them awkward to get in. Thanks for the info on the pots. I will have see if I can find them. It is always nice to have another option. Thanks again Graham, have a nice day, all the best, Mark :)

@@markbailey2981 I got me one of the 14cm Zebra Billies from Firebox. (and the bag for it) ..Zebra near a work of art. The pan that comes with it I didn't want to drill holes in for steaming use..such the nice SS bowl it is. ~ I found that one of those cheap SS(10 bucks in US) 5" butterfly wing~esque folding steamers will fit, and opens just enough inside the 14cm Billy for steaming use. As said I got the bag for it from Firebox Stove folks which comes with an extra little bag to stuff things in, that fits below the handle in upright position when big bag closed for stowing. ~~ Other point being I use the little bag to store the nesting steamer, and steamer still fits snugly so to not rattle about inside the Billy. So the mentioned steamer can be wrapped with a dew rag cloth and still fit inside... ..still a bit of room below the nesting pan topside for small bits when closed up in your bag. The legs on them steamers are a tad short, even though they butterfly wing open to 9". One has to be careful not to boil off all that water below that can get away if not wholly monitored. I found a simple 3 inch round SS cookie cutter that nests inside of the steamer when closed/nested in the Billy. Putting the cookie cutter below the steamer gives me another 1/2" space for more water below. lol, and a cookie cutter if I ever try baking biscuits. Here's the steamer I'm talking about. If link doesn't work down unda search folding steamer basket if interested. ID of the 14cm Billy is 14.1 cm. 5.5 inch basket comes in at 13.9 cm. tips me hat ~ www.amazon.com/Vegetable-Stainless-Expandable-Steaming-Water%EF%BC%885-5/dp/B08QZCSX8D/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=5.5+inch+Vegetable+Steamer&qid=1616879407&s=home-garden&sr=1-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzSjhMRU85Mk81SlMyJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMjY5OTUxMk9NSDlaWUsyVDVKTSZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNjM3MDUyUEo3VDQ1R1JCWU9aJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

Hi Ant, many thanks for watching mate 👍. I was sent the Jacob Bromwell frying pans from Wade at Woodswalker65. They are a great pan if you can get hold of them. The only place where I have seen them for sale is on eBay. The guy usually sells them in pairs, but the postage was more than the cost of the pans. I think he wanted £40 postage from the US. I'm not sue what they are like, but I noticed on eBay that they sell steel frying pans made by a company called Garcima. They are about £15.00 each. I was looking at them myself, but I didn't really need anymore. They could be worth. If I see any of the Bromwell pans for sale I will let you know mate. Have a great day, all the best, Mark 😀🔥🍳.

Great video mate. Think I tend to use a similar set up depending on the plans. Don't get the chance to go out as often as I'd like at the moment but reassuring to see the similarities. Still love using my lixada folding twig stove with the option to also use the trangia with it should the need arise. I like to be as compact as possible when I can, it's so easy to over pack. You can hang the MSR pots over the fire, just keep a Small stiff wire with Hooks on both ends about length of handle that will hook the handle end above the pot to the latch. I love the MDR pot, bit heavier than some bush pots but its a great latching Container, I do wish they made a better way to use the MSR pot lid as a small Fryer, I keep a grill but it doesnt have the folding legs, you just sit it on rocks or couple logs over fire, but I am liking that yours has legs build on it, and of course you didnt have a link to it haha

I bought an MSR Stowaway on Mark's recommendation and it's been fantastic. I much prefer a saucepan shaped pot, where possible, for actual cooking, compared to a cup or billy shape. Just for boiling, even, it boils way faster on a broad flame spread bc of the base to depth ratio. Downside is size, weight and bulk, but I'm into camping not hiking, so it rocks. I even bought the larger size for if I have to cook for friends!

Sometimes I'm amazed that the zips don't burst off it, but it keeps on going. I am looking for a larger pack for longer trips. I was looking at a Karrimor Sabre 75, but I think it will be too big. I'm not the tallest of people. So I am thinking of a Savotta Jaakari 40-60ltr. I haven't seen them before, but the size will allow me to use it as a large day pack and then it can be extended for the times I need more room. Hi Mark, great video. I’m looking to not waste money or space in my pack on a cooking set up. There are so many mfgs of kit and combinations of how things slot inside others. Hi Alan, I was about to say, Pathfinder seems to have a good selection which seem to nest together. I only have the mug and lid, but have looked at the rest of the gear and it all looks well made. I tend to have a mish mash of things. If something fits into something else, it is usually down to luck lol. Zebra billy pots are a good pot to use and carry. Have you looked at MSR? they make some titanium cooking items, mugs, plates, etc. I like the Stowaway pot that they make. The handle folds over the lid and locks it place, so you can store other items without them falling out.

@@AlanAlanAlanDave I have tried various military canteen water bottles over the years and they are great. I still have one here that I use from time to time. Like you say, it all nests together for storage and the cost of them are usually cheap. The BCB Crusader cups are supposed to be very good. I tend to stick with the taller skinnier bottles nowadays as it suits the types of pockets on the rucksacks. But I certainly wouldn't have a problem using military style bottles and cups :)

Mark Bailey great! I look forward to it. Most reviews are of either single items or full kit but not of ranges of kit, except for some stoves. Sooner the better for me as i’m feeling a tad swamped by all the choice. So say for example a decent kit for a few hundred quid that will do the job but only for occasional use. A mid range for over twice that value for people who are into it but can’t overspend and a flat out ‘pro’ kit which might have less gear but will be a real insight into how kit evolves... i’m just thinking out loud, so please don’t take this as me telling you.. thanks and best wishes, Darryl.

Thanks, Mark. Once again, a really help full video. May I ask you a couple of questions? 1. Where do you get the foil ring for the triangia burner? 2. Does theTomshoo wood burning stove fit nicely into one of the zebra Billy pots (12 cm or 14cm)? 3. Is there a stainless steel water container that you could boil water in that also fits inside either the pathfinder or the titanium cup? Thanks for your patience Rgds Imran
@markbailey2981
@markbailey2981 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Imran, I hope you are keeping well brother :) Many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. The ring for the trangia burner I made. It is very simple to do. I bought a small sheet of pre- drilled stainless steel and cut it to the height that I wanted them and then simply rolled it around a water bottle to get the required shape. I have had it for about 10 years, so they last a long time once you have made them. No, unfortunately the Tomshoo stove doesn't fit in the either the 12 or 14cm billy can. I was hoping that it would, but it is slightly too big for the 14cm. I don't know if it would fit in a 16cm pot as I don't have one to try. For the last question I'm struggling to think of any small steel water bottles that would fit in the mugs. It would be easier to find a plastic container that would fit in the pathfinder mug, and then boil the water in the mug. But if you are looking for stainless steel, then It might be worth having a look at the Klean Kanteen website. They make a large selection of stainless bottles and containers and could have something on there. I will leave a link to their website for you :) www.kleankanteen.co.uk/ I hope this helps Imran, have a great day, all the best, Mark :)

Thanks, Mark, for spending such effort in your patient reply. I didn't get a 'ping' to say you'd replied so sorry for the delay in my thanks. I should have read the responses below as you'd already explained the triangia stove. Apologies. I've moved to wanting a stainless steel water bottle / canteen and nesting stainless steel cup so I have more options to boil water. Titanium is a bit expensive (and I'm trying to avoid aluminium). The pathfinder system looks great but is also pricey. ..but sometimes you just have to bite the bullet. It's a bit of a shame the BCB crusader canteen just comes in plastic although they do do a steel cup. I have checked the Klean kanteen website as suggested and although the products look good value, the nesting cups seem limited. The nalgene stainless steel bottle with gsi nesting cup seems a good option but the cup sadly doesn't come with a lid. So the search continues. I really appreciate your approach to Bushcraft and the manner of your teaching. Thank you for all your efforts. Peace.

Your very welcome :)……… No worry about the late reply brother. I often miss comments and questions. I think its how You Tube works. Sometimes you will get notified, other times you don't. Yeah it can be awkward when trying to marry cups and bottles together. Like you say the BCB set is a great kit, the people I know who use it love it. They just boil the water in the metal cup or add water purification tablets into the bottle. The path finder set is also a great set. I know that they make one similar to the crusader style with a steel bottle, cup and nesting stove which is about £59.00 or they make the standard shaped cup and wide mouth bottle for around £40.00. The cup comes also comes with a steel lid. Your right, it can be expensive, but at least if you know what is available and the cost, it then gives you a rough figure to work out if you decide to buy a separate bottle and cup. Here are a couple of links to the ones I mentioned: (Standard shape) www.woodland-ways.co.uk/buy-online-pathfinder-gen3-stainless-steel-widemouth-bottle-and-nesting-cup-1395.html (Crusader Style) www.woodland-ways.co.uk/buy-online-pathfinder-stainless-steel-canteen-cooking-set-1394.html As for the titanium cook sets, I notice Amazon sell a lot of titanium mugs and bottle which are not too expensive. Here is a link to some of the cheaper titanium mugs with lids: www.amazon.co.uk/Lixada-Titanium-Portable-Camping-Foldable/dp/B0788KYBR4/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1546187322&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=titanium+cup&psc=1 I hope this helps. What is your view on alcohol stoves? How long does small bit of fuel last? Good for boiling water (how long) or or can cook well with it?
@markbailey2981
@markbailey2981 4 жыл бұрын
Hi G P, I love alcohol stoves. I like their simplicity, ease of use, plus they are cheap to burn. I opted to go with a Trangia burner as I like how they have a screw cap and a simmer ring. If I fill the burner to it capacity I can boil quite a lot of water. The main thing is to keep them out of the wind if possible, then boiling times are reduced. Plus they are great for cooking. One fill of the stove will usually last for me to boil my pathfinder mug for a drink plus boil water to cook an MRE. I usually carry a small bottle that holds around 150ml, so I can top the stove up (once cool) or fill it up if it is burnt out. Once I have finished with the stove, I simply screw the cap on and save what fuel is left in to stove. They are a great addition to the kit. Have a great week mate, all the best, Mark :)

Hi Hatoonisar K, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Yes the Tomshoo stove will fit in the 14cm billy pot and it will also fit in the 1.1ltr MSR stowaway pot too. I hope this helps :) All the best, Mark.

Where to order some nettle tea?
@markbailey2981
@markbailey2981 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Donald, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) I find most supermarkets sell nettle tea nowadays. If I'm not harvesting my own, I like the nettle and peppermint that you can buy. Twinings tea make a few different types if they are available to you. Thanks again and have a great Christmas, all the best, Mark :)

I've been using the GSI Pinnacle Soloist for four years now. Review here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKbIoHSjYpmCsKs . I find it is a good balance between light, versatile, small packing footprint and super functional.

Hi Mark, great vid as usual. I'm looking for one of those mesh fire rings you use, but can't find one anywhere. Did you make it yourself? Cheers mate....

Hi Jerry, I hope you are keeping well. Many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) Yeah the mesh ring was something that I made. They are very simple to do. I bought the stainless mesh off ebay for a few pound. I then I cut it to size and rolled it around a water bottle. Job done :) They last for years and years. Here is a link to the type of mesh I used. Thanks again Jerry, all the best, Mark. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3mm-Stainless-Steel-3mm-Hole-x-5mm-Pitch-x-1mm-Thick-Perforated-Mesh-Sheet/152128927226?hash=item236b9735fa:m:m6LDO8E960tPWh78DCVNFkg:rk:7:pf:0&var=451326569271

Any chance of details for the fire ring?
@markbailey2981
@markbailey2981 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan, funny you should mention it. I have order some steel to make one on video. A few people have asked about it. It is a simple process. I ordered the perforated steel from eBay, its 1mm thick with 3mm holes. But there are loads of different sizes available. Then you cut them to size you want and then roll them around a metal water bottle. Once they have been used a couple of times, they tend to loose their sharp edges and become a bit more pliable if you need to make any adjustments in the diameter. Cheers Alan, all the best, Mark :)
