Great video and I’ve never thought of rigging out my EOS R but I do see it being very useful as I’m starting to do more weddings. I do have a cheaper monitor mount and handle combo that goes into the shoe is functional but I don’t like having that weight Into the shoe of the body. This is definitely an option I may consider. Thank you so much for all the info and insight.
@impact20twenty4 жыл бұрын
It's definitly not worth having all that weight on the hotshoe mount plus a cage allows for so much customisation and also separates you from the photographer, especially when at weddings or events. I've found that guests see you with a standard dslr and automatically think you're the photographer and then they pose and you're like.... Awks... I'm filming 😂😂.

Do you have a tripod that you recommend for this setup? Looking for something that can handle outdoor shoots with some (not a ton) of wind, and that helps to eliminate any shaking. Thanks BTW for this video and the links!!! This is what I have been looking for!!!
@RossJukesPhotography2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I use a Gitzo tripod but only because that's what I use for my general photography. You would probably find a good quality video specific tripod more useful with a fluid head. However, as with most things video/photo related, they get very expensive very quickly and generally, heavier tripods are better (but not always practical). I would try the setup 'as is' and see what you think about the handheld shots, sometimes (depending on the subject) a bit of subtle movement can be quite nice, and spending a bit of time with the setup first will allow you to see where your money is best spent! Good luck! :)

@@RossJukesPhotography Any recommendations on a carrying case? I have been looking around for something that I don't have to break it down and put it back together all the time. I shoot video with it a couple times a week so that much breaking down is a no go. I was considering looking for a case used for camping and then fitting in foam to protect at this point. There are some bigger cases, but in the $300-$400 range that I not quite ready to pull the trigger on without seeing first. Thoughts? What do you do/use. Also, can't thank you enough for the setup, shoots well!!!

How much of this setup could also be used on a C70? I currently have the EOSR but plan to eventually change to the c70 and don’t want to have to sell it all with the change
@RossJukesPhotography Жыл бұрын
In one way or another, most of it. As long as you get a decent cage for the C70, you'll be able to add rails/top handle and from there, you can add whatever you need. However, the C70 will have a lot of benefits over the 'R' so you may not need to add an external monitor etc. - The beauty of these setups is being versatile and only adding what you need for specific jobs :) Good luck!

Great video! Tons of useful information. Thanks a lot. One thing that I'm struggling with is that the smallrig camera cage which is attached to the camera just on the bottom making my camera rotating a little bit everytime. Just one screw ins the bottom is not enough, do you know a way to stop this?
@RossJukesPhotography3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you for the kind words! So I’ve had a similar issue with a similar rig in the past and the simplest answer I worked out was to find a correct size bolt to go all the way through one of the threaded holes on the side of the cage so it applies some pressure to the side of the camera (obviously not so much that it damaged the camera) - having this second point of contact seemed to stop all the ‘wobble’ for me, hope this helps

@@RossJukesPhotography Great idea, I'll try something like this without damaging the bottom of the camera! Thanks for the reply.

Great video and thanks (I mean the wife won't be happy but meh) for the shopping list 😂. I have a cage for the R already and I'm not sure I need to go down the rails route yet as im just loading out the cage at the moment. Do you find the record button difficult to get to or is it just one of those things you get used to? I've been looking for a remote trigger for the R on a handle or something but can't find anything. Have you found anything like that during all your research travels or can we customise which button is the record button? I've been looking through the custom menus today and don't think you can.
@RossJukesPhotography4 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks and apologies to your wallet 😂 I have never really struggled with the record button but have used a little remote trigger for both my R and M50 and likewise, considered mounting it to a side handle etc for a better feel, but never ended up doing it as it just wasn’t a priority... depending on your needs (whether it’s just a comfort thing or whether you need remote triggering etc) you could just use your phone and the canon app? That way you’d have all the key functions at your finger tips (though with a bit of a lag)... the beauty of rigs like this is that you can adjust them to your needs, there’s no ‘exact’ way of doing things 👍
@impact20twenty4 жыл бұрын
@@RossJukesPhotography yeh that's a good idea and one I was going to try velcroing to the cage but I've just learned that apparently you can customise the main photo trigger button to be the video record button. Will try it and let you know!

In your video, you said that a mirrorless or DSLR camera just can’t provide certain things that a cinema camera can and you mentioned 10bit color depth, but the EOS R shoots 10bit native
@RossJukesPhotography4 жыл бұрын
I believe it’s 8-bit interval and 10 bit over HDMI - so you would need an external recorder (unless there has been a firmware update which now supports 10 bit internal?)

Hello, nice Rig. I have a question about the ninjaV fan noise. How you deal with it in interview situations? Especially when you use the mic on camera, or ist it not possible?
@RossJukesPhotography4 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the question. In an interview, I would either be using a lav mic (wireless) or a boom, either way, you want the mic as close to the subject as possible for the best quality audio, so fan noise ‘shouldn’t’ be a problem, though I’d recommend monitoring the audio as you go anyway... hope this helps 👍

Been looking for a rig setup for my EOS R, this seems to fit the bill. Do you use this also with a shoulder pad? Or just mounted on a tripod?
@RossJukesPhotography4 жыл бұрын
I only tripod mount it myself because it’s mainly static interviews etc that I shoot. However, I’m pretty sure small rig have a shoulder mount option (and worth checking other brands) but should be easy enough to fit something to the rail system 😉

How much money for the total setup with rig, monitor, handle, battery?
@RossJukesPhotography4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jesper, so everything (not including the camera, lens or sound devices mix pre as that really is optional) probably adds up to around £1800 or $2200 - the reason I can’t put an exact figure on it is because the prices fluctuate and some of these things were bought on eBay, so it just depends how lucky you get. Also, you don’t ‘need’ everything here and certainly not all at once, so it’s worth just adding bits as you go along and work out what fits best for you, good luck 👍

Can you use this same set up for the eos r6
@RossJukesPhotography3 жыл бұрын

Thank you so much for this review. NEW SUB! So I have a budget of about $5-6K USD and I am looking to buy into a new camera system. I am contemplating between the Canon R, BMPCC 4K, or R6. The issue I am having is that I love the color out of the BMPCC4k but it cannot take stills. I am primarily a video creator but wanted the flexibility to be able to shoot photos if needed for clients and projects. Hybrid Shooting. I am trying to work out the best system with the budget I have. Seeing how I need a proper lens and lighting and atmos Nija V. I have microphones and sound taken care of. I plan on buying a friend's Canon 16-35 EF F2.8 version II. If you could please give me your opinion as it is much respected. Thanks in advance.
@RossJukesPhotography4 жыл бұрын
Hi Adam, thank you for the comment and welcome along! I think it really depends on what is your main output (video I’m guessing) and what is the perfect set up for that? If you think the BMPCC is the better option, go for that. The truth is, most consumer grade cameras can take a ‘good’ image and to be honest, most clients wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between a shot on a canon R5 vs an M50... so if you can hold back $500 or so, you could pick up a supplementary camera for stills anyway (I love the Fuji X100F - or the newer V as they have baked in presets)... it really boils down to making sure you tick all the needs for your main output... either way, with that kind of budget I’d imagine you can get a very decent setup!! Good luck 👍

@@RossJukesPhotography Hey Ross, thank you. This was the best advice I have received for sure. I really appreciate your fast response. Love the content. Keep grinding out the videos. I will look into the Fuji and M50 for stills. Once again, thank you!!

It doesn't make sense if you use manual focus and you're using the RF lense because it is good for autofocus to make the work easy, Using a different lens or cinema lens would be better if you mount it on the eos R. Nice build tho.
@RossJukesPhotography4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kirs, the RF glass is arguably better than EF but you’re absolutely right, autofocus is at a point these days where unless Hulu need specific racked shots etc, then using auto is great 👍

how to u handle camera shakes
@RossJukesPhotography4 жыл бұрын
LIVESH hi, it’s really just about using the right tool for the job, so for longer tracking shots etc I’ll switch to a gimbal. This setup I’d great for locked off shots or when you want that ‘handheld’ feel. Then obviously using warp stabilisation etc to smooth it out about mire. Counterintuitively, the heavier setup is easier get smoother shots when handheld as you have a bit more resistance to work with, hope this helps.
