had my first breakup in deviantart notes. I still have screenshots, looking back it was truly one of my most surreal experiences. think it’s fair to assume a lot of others also had insane middle school drama on that site

My first experience with fetish art was seeing drawings of cartoonishly obese Sonic characters. As a kid, I just thought it was hilarious and that they were drawn as a joke. Turns out they were drawn for different reasons entirely.

I was always confused by that, when I looked loud house characters I would aways find images of them fat and I never got it, but it always put me the wrong way like it was drawn for all the wrong reasons, guess I was right lol

Its crazy to me that back in the early 2000s, my art instructors encouraged students at my college to join DA so their work can be discovered by ad agencys and companies that wanna hire. I joined in 2003 and remember using the forums to seek out small gigs for those who wanted a logo or poster designed. Its like in its early phase, DA was taken seriously as a professional platform for artists to find work. Then in later years, it was a place for Sonic recolors wearing diapers lol.
@JamesRindall
@JamesRindall 11 ай бұрын
Not totally true. Even within the last few years some professional artists got discovered in Deviantart. The fetish stuff is really just a small and niche part of the site that got infamous among internet users but not everyone else. As of now, the most normal way of making a living in Deviantart is by using Patreon or having people commission stuff, so it's still a good way to get jobs even in a smaller scale.

I always thought YCH stood for "Your Character here", since a lot of artists dont take commissions unless you have an OC to use, especially the ones that don't have limits on what they'll commission, that way you know they don't necessarily like to do this type of art usually

I started with bases, because I was young and didn't even knew drawing tablets existed, so I had to draw with my mouse. I actually put a lot of effort in the drawings, and spent hours making just one, using GIMP at the time. I'm currently a professional illustrator :) edit: I love how one can tell you try not to loose it while talking about the small man-baby.

I definitely can relate to the whole DA Families theme, though in my case it was on Discord. I used to be on a server where everyone was super close, and considered the admin be everyone's parent as a joke, then we separated each into generations, and eventually made a whole family tree to showcase them, with everyone having their own icon based on their pfp or niche at the time (one guy got in as a bunch of ice cubes, for instance, because they just chewed ice on VR in a regular basis). Heck, one user even started a written story about a made up lore of the whole server, using level roles as part of the plot to indicate our relevance/power level in the story. I unfortunately left the server sometime ago because I went into a depressive phase, but managed to keep a picture of the family tree as a... memento of those times, so to speak. I dunno if the server is still up, but hopefully they're still around having fun.

as a regular DevianArt user, I really enjoyed this new iceberg! I have so many funny memories from the past about people saying how cursed the site was (like with the fetish art and all) but then I ended up making my account about 3 years ago and honestly it's a really cool place, you just gotta know the right places and the right people, and there are some really cool and awesome people there that make really great stuff. I've made a lot of my friends on there and I've shared my art with my friends and family and they're support has been really amazing. I think it's a great place to express yourself and to get yourself out there with making art.

the Chris chan impression omg! Also something to add about groups - before groups were a thing, we had clubs. They were basically normal DA accounts, but they reupoloaded (with permission and a lot of watermarks) members' art relating to whatever fandom/character etc the club was for, with the original linked in the description. I ran a club back in the day and they were SO ANNOYING TO MANAGE! Because no matter how many times i put "DO NOT FAV" on the art or the page, there would always be someone who'd ignore it. When groups were added to the site, everything became much easier.

You have been on FIRE so far into 2023, like, seriously, making a really unique list covering your top 25 videos of 2022, discovered Captain S "lore" featuring a goddamn interview, a video about the Daria fandom which had me intrigued despite me having no prior knowledge of the show other than its very chill style and great character design. Then this iceberg about a website that has been around the internet block for a while now with constant weird and obscure content being made by so many people over the years, and having a very rich history in and of itself. I am watching so many creators now that it feels hard to keep up with some more than others, so I really hope that I will not miss out on your amazing content throughout this year

..It's really weird that I'm realizing this from an explanation video of a deviantart iceberg entry about fetish art, but I didn't have the usual experience of losing my innocence. That is to say, I can't really pin down any specific moment that I lost it. I think it was more of a gradual loss due to various horrible experiences across the span of years. Anyways, I apparently share my name with not one, not two, but THREE CARTOON RODENTS. A squirrel, a mouse, & a chipmunk. Yes the chipmunk is from that fucking band.

LMAO when you were scrolling through the search results of MLP I was lowkey looking for my own art. I got somewhat popular in some MLP circles with my fan art, redesigns and AU work. I made a map of Equestria and beyond and frankly did an ungodly amount of research into every single piece of mentioned geographical, historical and creature-related lore from both the show, movies, comics and other media, so I could place these locations out on the map alongside my own original locations since the map was made for my mlp AU that I intended to be a comic (unfortunately discontinued). Despite my numerous clarifications and edits that it was an AU and not meant to be my own interpretation of the OFFICIAL map, I STILL to this day get comments of people asking "where is x y z-ville or blorbo-town or glup shitto's forest" and whatever. I see that damn map reposted to places like derpibooru and pinterest. It's STILL among the top results of google images when googling "mlp equestria map", lmao. EDIT: I got curious and googled equestria map. My map is, shockingly, still among the top results. And is apparently available as a wallpaper now without any credit or mention to me.

Its just part of who I am and I am glad I have deviantart as a resource for that. I am happier having accepted that part of myself instead of trying to hide it or hate myself for it. Now before anyone comes at me for being a freak or weirdo, #1 nothing can be said to me I haven't heard before, and #2, there are FAR worse fetishes out there when monsters like zoophiles and necrophilies exist.

My first DeviantArt account had actually been banned since 2016 because I was too young when I made the account (by about 4 months). I finally got it unbanned this year just to have it deactivated because I didn't want my old stuff on there anymore. It was fun while it lasted, but in the end most of the people I had been talking to either stopped visiting the site as often or had already left. Aside from the questionable posts that appeared on the main page and stolen art, I had good memories of DA.

I vividly remember joining DeviantArt when I was around 11-12. I had never been exposed to anything related to the LGBTQIA+ at that point in my life, so I had literally no understanding of gender identity or sexuality. I didn't even know that anything other than cisgender and heterosexual existed. I made art about me and my friends, our lives, things I was interested in, etc. One piece that I remember posting was a vent piece about one of my closest friends drowning out at sea. A very popular artist on there (I can't remember their name) found that piece and comforted me through it. They were 13 and they identified as agender (having no gender identity), but at one point they told me they were born a girl. This was my very first interaction with the LGBTQIA+ community, which as I've previously stated, was something that I didn't even know existed at that point. I was interested in trying to understand them, so I asked them questions about their identity, but they couldn't/wouldn't answer those questions for me. I then turned to the internet, which had basically nothing regarding my friend or their gender identity. I asked people around me irl about it because I wanted to get to know my online friend better and I wanted to make sure that they felt comfortable and happy around me. Because I couldn't find anything, I went with what I knew: she/her pronouns and he/him pronouns. We were good friends for a while until I commented under one of their journals calling them a girl. Full context: their journal was about how bad of a singer they were. Me, who was an avid singer at that point, left a comment to the effect of "Don't say that! If you keep practicing, you'll get better! Just keep working at it. You've got this girl!" They immediately jumped down my throat, telling me about how I was a horrible person for misgendering them, that I deserved to die because I had dehumanized them and had done something so awful to them that they now despised me. I was completely in shock (ONCE AGAIN I HAD LITERALLY NO IDEA WHAT I HAD DONE WRONG) and I tried to explain myself to them, providing evidence that I had been trying to understand them better but I didn't have the proper information. I told them that if they could just tell me what I had done wrong, then I would correct it immediately and never make the same mistake again. They ignored me and instead aired out our messages to their fans (they had like 30,000 followers at that point) and told them all to harass me for being such an awful person. I ended up abandoning the account for a few months because I just couldn't handle the amount of hate I was being sent. Death threats, doxxing threats, rape threats, just about anything bad that they could think to say to me, they said. Me, being a literal prepubescent child, couldn't handle the amount of bullying I was going through. It got completely out of control and I had to ask my family to help me shut down the account, along with many other social media accounts I had made (I was also being cyberbullied on those other accounts as well). It was a very horrible time for me, especially because I didn't fully understand what I had done wrong. Long story short, my family helped me delete all my social media accounts and the experience scared me so bad that I refused to ever make another social media account. It got to the point where my family went behind my back when I was around 13-15 and made a Facebook account for me because I kept refusing to make any social media accounts for myself. After they did that, I straight up told them I was never going to use it and that they could not force me to get social media until I was ready for it. I figured I was ready when I was around 17-18 years old and that's when I created my new social media accounts for myself. Still don't use the damn Facebook account, but I'm doing much better with the internet now than I did when I was younger. After all, it was the internet that helped me realize that I'm a pansexual transgender man. It was the internet that helped me learn more about my mental disorders and taught me more about how to take care of myself. The internet helped me figure out who I am and who I don't want to be. TL/DR: Got bullied off of DeviantArt for accidentally being transphobic before I even knew being trans was a thing, only to later find out I, myself, am actually trans.

I'm gonna sound like a boomer, but I think it's pretty messed up that we're at a point where we're unironically describing what was once a normal social media post as "basically a twitter post but longer".

It's not that deep lol. I described it that way mostly because it was funny to say.

The way people treated bases (or anything even remotely reffed) on dA was the reason why I spent years scared of using references on my own art because I was paranoid someone would call me a tracer ghfdagfgfhgh I've finally unlearned that but boy it did some damage to young me Edit: Oh my GOD, I didn't know the origin of the "god I wish that was me" meme alkjhkjahljf I use it all the time, I'm in tears XD

Now, I don’t use DA anymore but my profile is still up. But there are things that still linger in my mind. Like the Animaniacs fan comic, where a cartoonist is pulled into the TV by the Warner brothers/sister and turns into a dog herself. It even had an original song too, and remember someone in the comments saying something along the lines of “I wish I knew how this song would play out” or listen to it. Never the less, I think the artist had a uh…crush on Yakko Warner, with there being some moments here and there. Hopefully it hasn’t been deleted so I can go back and see it again.

Were the Deviantart families popular in 2010-2012 by any chance? Because I remember there being a similar family craze on the European Flipnote Hatena server. It all started with Pikawai, a group of young teens who had ocs based on existing characters from Nintendo games and made amvs with them. It turned out they were so talented at what they were doing they got noticed by other young teens in Europe on Flipnote Hatena, who consequently wanted to create their own Flipnote Hatena families. Flipnote Hatena family audition Flipnotes were also very common here. As far as I’m aware of none of these families lasted too long though, maybe two years maximum. I remember the Pikawai family having some sort of hierarchy of who is which family member, but I forgot. But mostly the family part lost its meaning, because other groups mostly used ‘family’, because they tried to get the same clout as Pikawai had. Yeah, it’s a matter of you just had to be there to totally understand. This all went down between 2010-2012, so that’s why I wonder.

DA families were popular all the way back in 2008 or so, and persisted (maybe to this day? I'm unsure tbh). But the Flipnote connection is very interesting lol.

Damn...this felt like a nostalgia trip for me especially looking back on the old but gold days of DA, now it's inevitably gone downhill since 2017...

I thought the trollface was originally the "cool face" from a comic where two guys get pulled over and the driver puts on his "cool face" and says "problem officer?"

I used to use deviantart. Deviantart with its new platform design and updates it doesn't feel alive as it used to. I had to leave my DA since a lot of artists go to social media for selling/sharing art. It's kinda sad since ik a friend still uses it and doesn't use social media to promote or share their art more and prefer to stay on a dead platform. Idk how to break it to them

Common DTKO W, can’t wait for the next parts! Deviantart takes me back, but did anyone ever use PaigeeWorld? It was more niche and similar to Instagram in format. Died off a couple years ago and if you didn’t save anything it’s all lost media

Down a long forgotten rabbit hole for me here. Used to have 120 followers on there and did random fanart. Stopped using it around 2018 as life got too bust. Made some new posts recently, but can't get back into it :/ Also found out that there is a conjoined twins fetish because I drew one and it got added to a very strange fetishy collection...

A new iceberg and it's about DeviantArt? Oh no, it's about to get cringe and disturbing due to alot of furry/NSFW/NSFL stuff (some entries may be general about the site, so I may be wrong) also, I recommend Solar Sands' channel for this, he has a playlist of him browsing DeviantArt and looking at some nasty stuff

Definitely hoping Solar Sands would be covered in the iceberg. TheFandomMenace too since he was one of the first guys that made the "Browsing Deviantart" series [mamed DAWTF]. Not alot of people mention about the latter unfortunately :(
