3:19 Hold your striker firm and pull the ferro rod against it. You get a more consistent spark right in front of the striker, and more of the sparks will land on target. :)

Nice idea for a fire kit! For years in my hunting pack I've kept a BIC wrapped in a combination of fishing line (with a couple of small hooks under the wrap), jute, bank line, Gorilla Tape, and inner tube ranger bands. One tip is to put a plastic zip tie around the top of the light, clinched tight with the locking part wedged under the gas valve button to keep it from getting pushed accidentally. You can twist the zip tie around to free up the button when you need to, and twist it back to 'lock' it shut. Next one I make I'm going to try adding a birthday cake candle, a ferro rod, and a Fresnel lens. I think I one of the credit card sized plastic lenses might roll around the lighter if I make it thicker with cordage first. You might consider replacing the BIC with a Clipper lighter, which is basically an upgraded BIC that uses a beefier wheel, replaceable flints from a Zippo, a refillable fuel tank, and a gas valve that increases the flame height when you tilt the lighter on its side so the flame reaches further (meant for lighting pipes). You can get robust metal versions of the Clipper lighter as well for a couple dollars more, which isn't bad as they're around the same price as a BIC already.

Suggestion? Use a fero rod as long as the lighter, w/a lanyard hole. Easier to handle w/ cold hands, and tied into the package. Carry more than one straw. And a chunk of fatwood is great scraped as tinder, as well! This kind of thing is a "line 1 item", it stays on your body. Pocket or around your neck...

I've carried a mini bic for decades. I used to just put duct, and then gorilla ( when it hit the market) tape on them and call it good. A standard roll of tape is the same width as the mini lighter so it's a natural fit. I got a lot more use over the years from the tape instead of the lighters but both get used. The downside to taping the lighter is you can't shine a light through to check fuel level. For the last 5 years or so I've upgraded to a mini bic inside of a metal cover/sleeve found ón Amazon. The three most obvious advantages are: The metal cover protects the plastic on the bic ( although you have to try pretty hard to break one). The tape is now on the cover instead of the lighter so the lighter can be removed and checked for fuel level. This brings peace of mind knowing how much is left. The third advantage is you can turn the bic around in the case to prevent unwanted fuel expenditures... Although in all my time of carrying a bic, I don't believe I've ever lost fuel by accident. The cover adds very little weight, and practically nothing to the dimensions of the bic alone.

I actually used a Firestarter as you show today that I made 6 yrs ago. Lit up as if I made it today. Tip: use the widest straws you can buy. Jumbo.Don't settle for the skinny ones....too hard to get the cotton balls into it.

I like this idea. I've been using cotton balls for a long time now, however I use Neosporin instead of Vaseline. It adds at least a little first aid element as well. Love this video, keep em' coming!

I’ve always kept a Neosporin cotton ball in the cap of a tube of chapstick then dummy corded to a lighter with gorilla tape and a section of brass wire. If you add a sewing kit or basic fishing kit (stored in a mini toothpick holder) or a mini ferro rod to the mix, there’s basic first aid, food procurement, fire, and gear repairs in a real compact but useable package.

I like mineral oil rather than petroleum jelly. I did a completely unscientific test and the mineral oil soaked cotton burned much longer than the other. I keep several soaked in a small pill bottle. I cram as many as I can in there and it typically lasts the summer camping season.

Thanks for the video. I have a few hints on making your fire starters easier. I haven't had a problem with Vaseline making it hard to melt the ends of the straw. Don't seal an end then try to put the cotton in, it will bust the end back open because of air pressure. Cut your straw about an inch and a quarter in length, put in your Cotton ball, then squeeze one end of the straw, real close to the end with your pliers. Burn seal that end, then pack the cotton down in the other end just far enough to grab it with your pliers, and seal that end. Always make a few in case you need another later. Keep in mind they make big straws too. Bigger around that is. You can also put things in these straws like salt, pepper, fishing hooks and sinkers, matches, anything you can imagine. Just seal them up and they're good to go.

Good idea, have been doing something similar for years. Tape a yarn needle and a couple fish hooks to a lighter, get a couple tender tubes (straw with cotton ball), wrap it with #15 tarred mason line with a short lanyard, and attach it to my Victorinox SAK Huntsman. The Bic or similar type lighter works even when out of fuel. Remove the wind screen, take a tender tube out, fluff the cotton ball up, use the lighter as a spark wheel.

Bic lighters are absolutely a go to..... not only will they work with fluid.... they absolutely work without!!!!providing you have a good tinder source ready.... cuz after the fluid is used up... your left with a spark wheel that works every time!!!!!

For a ferro rod that size, have you tried a "Rat Match" (Esee)? Its half ferro and half magnesium. As long as you have your ferro rod you'll have flash tinder. Five Star Gear makes one as well thats a little less expensive. It comes with a ceramic scraper as well. Ive been using both for about 6 months now, they seem pretty comparable.

I always find it easier to hold the striker still and pull the rod back. That way i dont send the tinder flying all over the place. Good tip for clumsy people like me. In the scouts we mixed sawdust with a very small amount of kerosene to make a sort of paste. The flame gave off a lot of heat over some time so would dry out timber helping it to start. Never seen anyone else mention using sawdust (pine dust from school woodwork lessons) and paraffin in this way.

I always carry a Bic lighter in a bright orange Exotac waterproof firesleeve that I wrap a bunch of Gorilla tape around. The tape is an excellent fire extender and will even catch fire from a fero rod, which I keep in any pack I carry.

For as overpriced as they are, I switched to the exotac cover for the bic lighter. I was so tired of reaching in my fire kit and finding a dead lighter. I don’t have that problem anymore. Also, guitar picks work as awesome firestarters, so I tape a few to each lighter.

I use heat shrink tubing instead of straws, and fire plugs (dental rolls with something flammable) instead of cotton ball & vaseline. That small rod looks like 1.5" or about the same length as a fireplug. So just under 3" of AAA battery wrap heat shrink tube, insert rod into one end, and the fireplug in the other. heat shrink the ends to capture them both inside. Fold in heat shrink in half and duct tape to form a loop for a lanyard. 7" length of battery wrap allows for 2 fireplugs on one end and a 3" rod.

You need a o-ring around the button to stop it from being depressed. Trust me seen a tune of empty bits in my life. My mom showed me this at age of 7 I'm 60 now and it saved me 8 time in the woods. Bics are good for summer but up here in canada they freeze! Yep.

Excellent idea. As a ferro rod warrior, you need to put a 90 degree burr on one or both sides of your ruler stiker to get a serious scrape. Also ceramic strikers are the bees knees

I didn't see bic lighters in Europe. They have Clipper lighters which are refillable and have a removable sparker which is handy for sparking a fire if the lighter is empty. As for drying out a lighter, it's extremely difficult when it's cold and wet and everything just keeps getting wetter and your fingers are almost paralyzed.

I think the Clipper is a better choice for few reasons if you run out gas with the Clipper you can refill it also remove the flint striker unit and light the Cotton that way you can replace the flint in the Clipper so bring a pack of flints and Gas ...... Endless fire 😉👍

I've been making my own version of water proof fire starters now for at least a few years....and man do they work NO MATTER WHAT!!! obviously nothing new here.. but..I just take an old small sauce pot that i use for all my wax projects...and I'll melt down wax..of any type works....along with Vaseline over a medium heat.. never boiling... they both have low melting temps...and then I'll take my cotton of choice usually round make up removers...as they stack really well after they cool and cure!! And most of the time one make up remover I can get 4 or more individual fires from just that one!!!! Or if needed light up 3 or 4 for almost a half hour of burn time.... cheap extremely effective waterproof they look good depending what color wax you melt and for getting a fire going.... I'm still yet to find something that's easier.. 😊

This is great Jason! Love the use of the steel ruler as a striker, scraper, crude cutting tool in a pinch. I was going to suggest adding a larger ranger band around the bic (top to bottom) for extra protection, ‘water proofing’ and more tinder maybe if this would be something that lives in a pack or pouch not for quick access. 🤷🏼‍♂️ I carry a mini bic in my fifth pocket and the wazoo fire steel and the ceramic folder wrapped in bank line on my keys. I don’t carry any tinder as part of my edc, need to fix that haha! I may start EDCing an Exotac fire rod with the capsule top. In my bumbag which I have on me or nearby 99% of the time I have my Victorinox 91mm ranger - I replaced the toothpick with a tortoise gear firefly and have a pill fob/cash stash with two Exotac quick lights in it attached to the key ring loop. Australia is the best place I’ve ever been. Only the south east coast. People are awesome, some beautiful scenery not far from the cities and man if you wanted to get lost in the wild it wouldn’t be difficult haha!!

I use one of the ligher holders that includes a decent folding knife blade (Like $6 on Smokey Mountain Knife site). Gorilla tape layers on one face of the lighter. It comes with a belt clip but I take mine off so it rides in the pocket better. I like the idea of the ferro rod and cotton/petrol additions. I use clear plastic Jumbo "smoothie" staws for pocket fishing kits etc. (Amazon for like $7-8 for 100). They are easier to fill, hold more stuff and being clear allows you to know which kit you have. You got me excited now to see what I can come up with. Man, I'm a nerd...

i've checked several bics after a couple years in a cache or a bag and found them to be inoperative. the flint disintegrates and won't spark. some even flamed up way over normal and one even exploded. i bought a package of 48 bics sealed in plastic. after a couple years they were useless too. don't depend on a bic, unless you're changing them out every few months.

I like to wrap a bic lighter with gorilla brand duct tape and a couple of guitar picks if available. I stopped the button from being depressed and secure the lighter to me with a length of 36 bankline attached to my belt on one end and a Canadian jam knot on the other end with the loop running under the pedal.

Really good video. I bet if you wrapped that straw with a couple wraps of foil, the straw would burn more like a candle and really extend the burn time. Plus, if you unwrap it, it will also give you a dry place to set your tinder on, a small place, but nevertheless a dry place. Something I have been thinking of doing, but have not tried yet, is to get some of those extra-large milkshake straws, and some thin jute twine, and fill it with melted wax, and make a sort of waxed jute twine dispenser. I'm not sure if it would be better to wax the jute first, or pack the jute in the straw and try to pour melted wax over it and fill in all the little places inside?? I think I'm going to try filling the straw first, and place the filled straw in near boiling water, so the wax will flow easily to the bottom of the jute, ensuring fully waxed jute top to bottom. The only thing I'm thinking, is the jute might be turned into one big wax lump and difficult to deploy, and maybe waxing the jute first and stuffing it inside the straw would be better. I think this would be a great way to store A LOT of fire-starting material in a compact, and cheap way. Just cut open the top, and pull out as much waxed jute as needed, and do your thing. I think these huge straws would also make great little compact mini kits as far as fishing, meds, cordage, fire starting, and so on. For fishing though, I would use ONLY braided line, since it won't have any memory of being placed in such a small compact type of kit. Mono line would just turn into a bird's nest of a mess. You could even add in 7 or 8 Berkley Crappie Nibble bait inside it as well, so it truly is an all in one survival fishing kit. In the fire kit, you could even had a small ferro rod, and small striker along with cotton balls. I was also thinking of melting one end in a longer area, so I could put a hole in it and maybe add it to my keychain. You should think doing some videos on making these, as you have great ideas, and I think the ideas are almost endless. Anyway, that's just my thoughts. Keep up the great work. I just put a petroleum jelly cotton ball covered by a regular cotton ball in the top of a Zippo and run a band of duct tape around it. Far less work and more durable.

Take a small water balloon or the pinky finger from a rubber glove and place it over the top of the box lighter, it water proofs it and helps it to float

I have those clipper lighters. They cost the same as big but they are refillable both gas an flint. Personally I don’t see a reason to pay bic’s ridiculous price. Which really blows me away when you get to the little one. I like the little bic but they cost more then the full size. I guess it gets to me because I don’t smoke. So my only uses are heat an cooking. I also use $1.00 wax toilet seal an Vaseline. The toilet seal is beeswax so it has many uses. Plus most won’t steal it Especially if you’ve used it for some thing and they think it is warn. Lol I like aluminum foil squares with cotton balls an dryer lint. It works like a candle an can be used more then once if need be.

Do like the straw idea, in a wet climate with cold hands that would be just the ticket. Have a little emergency fire kit I'm my med kit at present, just hear me out. Use the cotton makeup remover pads instead of cotton balls because they can double as bandages with duct tape. The Vaseline is in a tiny TicTac box that was left around the house one day. Yes, too much fussing in a crisis, it's straw time! Will disagree with the Bic. I'm an ex smoker and Clipper lighters are far superior. You can re-gas and flint them. The inner parts are interchangeable so you have 3 and you almost always have a working lighter. They are tougher than Bics. The flint/striker part comes out so can be used independently of the lighter to make sparks, you can even drill a hole in part of it and put on a lanyard.
