Basic sim setups make you work a lot harder to make up for the lack of normal controls usually available to you in the cockpit, which is great cause it will force you to improve your scan rate! It’s great fun to set zero visibility and fly an ils all the way to touch down and see if you can get it on the runway....keeping up with those twitchy needles the closer you get gets very challenging , failing an engine in a twin makes it even more exciting! There is one trick this joystick played on me when I was practicing before my first flight as a student. Yaw axis control. To turn right you need to turn joystick clockwise. Seems logical. I got used to this wery well after many hours in simulator. But when I got in the real airplane and used rudder pedals for turning I got confused... To turn right you move your right foot forward, left goes backwards... which is counter-clockwise! Intuitive direction of steering is exactly opposite from what you have on joystick. As a result it took me more that one lesson to unlearn this and start steering correctly. So my advice for anyone planning on using this kind of joystick - also buy pedals.

One of the first things to start getting wonky will be that twist stick and the lock that keeps it from twisting. If you want a solid. dependable, durable flight sim joystick that will last over 5 to 10 years of almost daily use, get a CH fighterstick. In the space of 6 years I've had 2 saitek 45's an X52 and an X56. 3 logitec sticks, (the same one in this vid) and a thrustmaster joystick. Since then I've owned the same CH joystick since 2008. And aside from having to clean it and one time opening it to put silicone grease in the friction components, it moves just as smoothly and with the same precision now as it did when i took it out of the box.
@romeotangoatc7064 жыл бұрын
I had one of these joysticks and it was a disaster. After about a year it started developing creep in the rudder (twist) function. No amount of calibration would solve this. I had to disassemble it and rig up something to rotate the potentiometer enough to get the rudder to centre properly. Over time, even that started to fail. Two other friends of mine developed the same problem as well. One started developing problems barely two months into ownership, the other had it develop after about a year. I subsequently replaced it with a Saitek AV8R-01 and that was brilliant...until one of the throttle controls started to fail too...sigh. Anyway, enjoy your joystick, but don't be surprised if problems start to develop before too long.

For a general purpose joystick my buddies and I, after our Sidewinders failed, switched to the 3D Pro. Along with Thrustmaster (TFRP) pedals. The 3D Pro is approx, in the UK, £39.00 at the time of writing and the TFRPs, approx £80.00-90.00. The downside with the 3DP is that it's handed, whereas a Thrustmaster stick can be configured. The 3DPro is great value and great durability too, so are the TM pedals. On the 3D Pro wear in the throttle lever eventually does for them, but still usable - some aircraft over rev/runaway that's all LOL! I use the top hat button for outside views etc. I use the trigger as a trigger (for combat sims) or brake for stick brakes as fitted to certain ultralights (or TM pedal toe brakes as appropriate for most other aircraft).

The Thrustmaster T16000m is a bit more expensive, but well worth it IMO. It's ambidextrous, with configurable hand and thumb rests. It has several more buttons (and an symmetrical throttle). Those Logitech sticks flog out in as little as 6 months of light flying and with such a small range on rudder input/stick twist, it will end up driving you crazy!

Hello. I used to play with a USB PS2 controller, and I used to do a feature in menu controls, It's called: "Center ailer rudder" in flight control surface/Primary control surface section, (I think Number 5 on keyboard), So this feature make the yoke returns to the middle in cockpit & it's make the plane balanced & going straight when I lose control of the plane or when I take my hands off the controller to relaxing my hands or when I get up from the computer for a minute, So when I came back to the computer I found the plane still going in a straight way & I feel happy. (This function it's not Auto pilot, It's Center ailer rudder) But after I play with a new joystick "logetich Extreme 3D Pro" and when I adjust the same feature (Center ailer rudder) on one of the joystick buttons. So when I click on that button. I see the yoke returns to the middle in cockpit, BUT when I take my hand away from the logitech joystick, the plane going down or going up. So I have to hold the logetich joystick all the time to control the plane. Why was this not happening to me on the PS2 controller? Is there any solutions?

Good video and very appropriate during this trying time. I too have a very similar setup to you including the same joystick. Simple, inexpensive and quite effective. From my experience I’ve found it most effective for practicing IFR procedures. Many aspects of IFR flying. Is it a tear drop or a parallel entry, the hold, course reversals, going missed... combining the sim with actual ATC communications available from many sources like KZbin, Live ATC, etc can, in my option, keep certain aspects of our IFR skills sharper than they would otherwise be. Using the sim with foreflight on the iPad is particularly effective. Perhaps there are other iPad apps, that might work just was well, that you could have available to you. Thanks for the reminder! Love your channel.

A quick tip for the 3d Pro from someone who's been playing IL-2, DCS and other combat flight sims with them for over a decade: Dismantle the joystick and cut the first 360 degrees off the centering spring in its base. This makes the resistance much more comfortable allowing for easier precision adjustment. Additionally, the top hat is pretty useless for looking around in combat games like IL2. You've hit the nail on the head by using it for adjusting trim, as this is what the hat is most useful for, allowing you to click one degree at a time with just the thumb of the joystick hand instead of having to take your off-hand away from the mouse to the keyboard.

Hey mate, disable the ai aircraft in the x plane menu, as this will really improve your fps( by about 30 in my case whilst flying the default c172). Just a heads up for ya! Great video!

Good content, I am a Spaniard with a lot of interest in making my passion of flying my profession, I just bought these controllers to try to increase my flying skills, but I need your help, do you recommend these Xplane 11 program or instead of these probably a better option like microsoft simulator 2024 or something like that?

Nice one Stef , I had a joystick similar to that and in the settings you should be able to adjust the sensitivity of the Joystick so as to make the flying even more real . Hope your back in EYZ soon , I,m going to try and do my IFR currency this week some time , will bring the cameras along .. stay safe ..

Thanks Aidan, I'm still playing around with the settings but straight out of the box it was pretty easy to use. Enjoy flying again Aidan, looks like we'll be able to do the same this week too.

I really enjoy this joystick, BUT the throttle is not micro adjustable enough for things like air to sir refuelling

Is that comfortable the use with your left hand? I ended up getting an old Logitech Attack 3 because it looked more left-hand-friendly.

Nice, other than the fact that my laptop isn't a macbook, you're running pretty much the same setup as I am now. One thing I do find useful is Navigraph, to bring the nav-aids in the sim in line with the real world, and I've played around a bit with orthographic map tiles for the places where I wanna do VFR flying. Stock X-plane uses open street maps data for roads though, so you can just follow roads in there and get roughly where you wanna go. I'm not a real life pilot. I'll take a discovery flight when my life allows for it in a few years time. In about a year or 2 I should be able to go back to a normal 40h/week and that's probably when I'll pick it up.

I've had one of those joysticks for probably 10 years. It's a stupidly old design (2003) that hasn't changed.

I actually ended up returning this product(bought for $40) a long time ago because I thought it wasn't accurate enough for an online only game that used to exist. I'm surprised that they still make this thing. Well, I have a Flight Stick X that's been sitting in my room since 2006. I also thought that they don't make those types of controllers/devices anymore because they're aren't any games out there that use them.
