I really appreciate you posting this. I used to struggle shifting to my left side and an instructor had me move the ball forward in my stance many years ago. It worked for a long time but now I am in my 60's and have been struggling with my irons. After seeing this video, I moved the ball back to center and can't believe the difference. Now I am hitting longer, piercing irons with a beautiful draw again. I can't thank you enough!

My natural swing I have a slight draw so I play it. So wedges are in my back stance and so is the 7 but center with long irons

A lot of instructors will address where the ball should be in your stats; however, you go the extra mile and detail a good rule of thumb of how far away you should be from the ball as well. Great job!

Your videos are all very very accurate, not like a lot of garbage online. This morning I have seen your suggested ball position with the driver and then I went to the driving range! If you put the ball higher and more advanced in the stance the ball makes more distance exactly right. if you lower the tee and put the ball a bit back in the stance , the shot is more accurate . Thanks !!!You go straight to the point , you give excellent professional teaching!

In theory, you are correct and it is based on the proper balance etc. Most people would benefit from determining where the bottom of their swing and govern themselves accordingly. If the lowest point is to one side or the other, they should adjust those positions relative to that point.

Makes a lot more sense to me than some who suggest the ball, except for the driver, always be in the same position........about a ball or two towards the middle from the left heel. For me, this extreme forward ball position on all irons leads to so many bad fades on mid to long irons and then pulled short irons. Good info and keep it up.

Hi Todd, nice video. Everbody talks about ball position but nobody talks about a golfers personal swing arc. So the way I think is: Find out your personal swing arc (bottom) for each club. Now it should become clear where to put the ball in relation to that arc when you want hit it decending, flat or upwards. Even for a draw or fade swing etc etc.. But the problem is how to find out your personal arc ? Based on your experiences do you have some tips or even a method for us struggling amateurs. May be a "memory" doormat or so. Would be great to share your thoughts on this.. Regards from the Netherlands

Harry Knuth great post and questions. Yes the individuals natural swing arc will have an impact on the bottom of the swing or what we call low point. The other concept that changes the low point is aim...more rightward aim and the bottom of the swing moves back...just the opposite for leftward aim. How that helps!
@benjaminhogan3157
@benjaminhogan3157 5 жыл бұрын
I use the center of my sternum to find the low point for irons right on the front of the ball; for fairway woods, right on the back of the ball; for driver, a ball width off my left heel. This makes the ball look further back in the stance than it is, but it gives me clean ball/turf contact w/irons and fairway woods.

I have struggled with identifying the cause of the dreaded slice. There are three. 1. Open club face. 2. Out to in swing path. 3. Ball position too forward.
@jacobarmstrong2343
@jacobarmstrong2343 5 жыл бұрын
Johnny Parker personally i find most slices are caused by outside in swings. try placing your ball next to a 2x4 with enough room to hit it. take gentle swings you’ll train yourself not to swing outside in cause you don’t want to hit the 2x4. I would also work on aligning your hips shoulders and feet also they all contribute to in proper swing pathing. Keeping your right arm close to your body may help also.
@winstonsmith11

Honestly, I think people mostly struggle with shaft lean at impact with irons and wedges. They're trying to get under the ball with their hands, and they bottom out early. You can chase ball position forever, but it won't help if you're not committed to a downward blow with a stable left wrist. And many can't do that, try as they might, because they lose their spine angle in the downswing. Causing the classic casting motion. So, if you want to pure it, maintain the angle of the spine as a top priority. Treat the spine as a fixed axis, and simply rotate around it. Then, focus on a delayed wrist release with a downward strike. The loft of the club will produce launch and spin when you're delofted at impact. No need to use the hands try to get it airborn. You're looking for ball first, then turf. Not contacting both simultaneously. And down. Always down, and leaning toward the target. Then, with that knowledge, this ball position video may be helpful as a baseline. And if you're still bottoming out early, move the ball back accordingly.
@winstonsmith11
@winstonsmith11 5 жыл бұрын
To elaborate further, if anyone cares... If you can't seem to maintain the spine angle, it's probably because of a balance issue. Starting the swing with the weight out on the toes forces us to straighten up the spine towards a vertical position, cast the wrists, and swing the arms to the left in order to strike the ball and to stay in balance. Your brain won't let you whiff or fall down. So your swing plane efforts are basically futile. So start with a well balanced setup. Weight should be over the center of the arches in the feet. From there you have the opportunity to dictate where your body can go. Versus your body dictating where it must go to stay balanced. There's a lot of issues were faced with in the golf swing, and they seem complicated. But they almost always go back to the setup.

Great video and a neat little training aid. Tried to get it up in Canada but unfortunately Rimer doesn't ship here. For ball positioning and putter alignment I use a laser device called sqrd up, very neat. As per previous comment, was stance width changing. I could see with the wedges and down to mid irons being fairly close but I would think that long irons, fairway woods and driver the stance would widen. Just rambling. As always, love the videos as they always have great content and always make you slow down and think. Keep up the great work.

I like (when practising) to put a guide ball on about the 7 iron spot, (but placing it further away from myself) I try to swing the same (as if i wanted to hit the guide ball) this helps bottom out my swing in the same place everytime. It stops me focusing on the ball I'm hitting and encourages me to swing through the ball. Otherwise I'll try to hit the driver ball (with the driver) and my low spot moves forward.

Hey this is great stuff and I like your coaching method and appreciate how quickly and precise you can talk (my style, I’m from jersey). Anyway, I’ve been digging into videos because of a very specific position/distancing question/problem I have w driver. I see you mentioned “below the shoulders and where the club sits” as the method for each example (wedge, 7, 3w, D). But I see you are more extended for each increment. (You even show a comparison between wedge and driver when first explaining body/arm distance from the ball ). I learned a bit from you’re video and agree with your body positioning length increases respectively but would love more clarity on that minute change of “below the shoulders” to slightly under the neck! Any help please! Thank you in advance! I’m doing a dance on the tee boxes!

Biomechanically speaking, for hitting a relatively straight shot (very slight draw, which would be "neutral"), and with proper stance of approximately 2" outside of neutral joint alignment (which you should always do), then the bottom of your swing arch, with proper weight shift and post-up, should be approximately 2" (remember 2" outside joint alignment?) away from center towards target. Because during your post up, your lateral movement towards the target should end in neutral joint alignment with your leading hip socket, placing the bottom of your swing arch (with spine tilt) approximately 2" ahead of center. This would place your ball almost dead center in your set up stance for any flat surface, neutral ball flight, descending ball strike. Does not matter which club you use. This should be true for ALL of your clubs. The only time your ball position should change would be based upon lie, or when needing ascending ball strike with a driver off of a tee, or other "special" ball flight characteristics (high, low, draw, cut, etc.). The bottom of your swing arch should not change no matter which club you use. If it does, then you are altering your swing path per club, which is probably the root of your inconsistency problems. Again, ball position should not be determined by your club, it should be determined by your lie and the desired ball flight characteristics, period. Modifying ball position based upon club selection is a fallacy and is the #1 cause of inconsistent ball striking, especially among amateurs. Most amateurs set up with an entirely too wide of stance, and they employ far too much lateral movement. You should never set up with more than 2" outside of neutral joint alignment (hips sockets) for all clubs except driver, which should be no more than 3" outside neutral joint alignment. If you deviate from this, then you are probably an consistent ball striker, and, over time you are probably going to need hip replacement and perhaps have knee and lower back problems as well.

On your guide, the video showed a single position each for wedges, irons, hybrids/FW woods, and driver. I know wedges are usually the same length, so that makes sense, but is there really no difference in position for all the irons, despite a 9 being so much shorter than say the 4?
@USGOLFTVshow
@USGOLFTVshow 4 жыл бұрын
fretless 5 good question, this is intended to be guide and you are correct their is a slight difference between the ball position of a 4 iron and a 9 iron. The 9 iron will be slightly back maybe 1/2 a role compared to the 4 iron...Hope that helps. 👊

@fretless05 4 жыл бұрын
@@USGOLFTVshow Thanks! That's perfect. I wondered if there was a small difference or if the placement between 9i and the woods would look like a solid line. Knowing the difference is slight will help me greatly, particularly with the long irons that I think I current have too far forward.

@b-radg916
@b-radg916 2 жыл бұрын
Every club? I’m guessing your friend hits from the center of his stance (really, the bottom of his swing) on everything off the ground/not teed up. Since reading Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible, I play all of my irons at the bottom of my swing, except if it’s a strange lie or to change the ball flight (lower = further back). The only sensible reason (to me) to play forward is if it’s teed up.

@@USGOLFTVshow The hybrid and wedge placement. I had heard in the past about placing the hybrid ball position in the center where you have your irons. Plus, do you put all the iron shots in the same position? I had heard the longer the irons, the further forward to out the ball so the 5 iron is almost at the same position as the hybrid.

Good instruction, sir. However, some instructors say positioning the Wedges back of center line by 1-2 golf balls spacing so one can get more compression and distance. So, whose right? I am in the process of reinventing my golf swing to be better and consistent.

I have to disagree on this one. I do not change the ball position, no matter what type of club I am using. As a right handed golfer, my ball position is one club head inside my left heel, that never changes. The only change I make is I vary the width of my stance by moving my RIGHT foot either farther forward or farther back depending on the type of club I am using. I get good compression with every club and I get a divot after the ball every time. It is much easier and less to think about.

Should have filmed the ball positions from the player's perspective. By filming on the side opposite the player, you're placing the ball for longer clubs to the right of center from the viewers perspective, which is opposite of what you're proposing. For a beginner, it could be confusing.

Take a look at Jack Nicklaus ball position, all on the same front heel kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIi2pHyYqNVmoLM I've tried all this and much more and still can't work it out. If you are all as frustrated as I am and so disillusioned with golf then just give this shit game up. Everyone is just trying to sell themselves and not really caring for how we hit the ball.

This guy is concentrating on the position in relation to the feet and is somewhat wrong. The ball position should be in relation to your lower and upper body. You can have the ball in the middle of your feet and then have your upper body too far back which will mean in reality the ball will be too far forward and also if you set up with your upper body forward and the ball in the middle of your stance the ball will be too far back in your stance. Make sure that both your lower and upper body are over the ball.
