It would be great if you redid this video as the options have massively changed both in availability (some of these don’t exist anymore), in offerings (some have upgraded), and also in pricing - flyin’ miata is double now.

For anyone who is wondering about the mazdaspeed turbo setup. I’m currently running it with the FM intake, adaptronic ecu, 420cc injectors, and straight pipe. Car is sitting on 15psi and it does the job. But with this setup you won’t be getting anywhere close to the 250hp range. I recommend just doing a different setup. Save ur time and money

After watching this before I bought turbo gear and now that I’ve gone through many many engines and have found a great setup that works for me (260whp) in watching this again I can’t recommend enough please listen to this advice. He is bang on with setups. You might save yourself $100 here and there but in the end you’ll pay for the short cuts you take. Take a little longer to save and Buy a kit from a reputable brand. Really interesting watching this again knowing what I know now. I wish I had listened more. But you’re wrong on one thing too - don’t buy used injectors. New ones aren’t that expensive.

The holy bible of turboing miatas is here. Awesome job. Also, wouldn't be a bad thing to add a small side note at the end, regarding the extra cost beyond 250-300whp and a short list of what needs to be done. Built engine, additional cooling, trans swap, ignition & fuel upgrades etc.
@TheCarPassionChannel
@TheCarPassionChannel 5 жыл бұрын
"short list" *remove your engine from the car and fully disassemble it, reassemble with stronger parts and put it back in This in itself is significantly more difficult than installing an entire turbo kit, which is why I narrowed the information down a bit in this video. 95% of boosted Miata owners have stock engines for that reason :)

Spent $670 on solely hardware for my eBay 1.8 turbo kit that I pieced together myself. Another $670 for MSPNP2, $45 for RX8 injectors from a pick n pull yard, $150 for wideband and $260 for custom downpipe. $1800 for the full kit essentially, and tuning done by myself. So far it’s been running great, EBay is definitely the way to go if you’re on a budget. Could have saved maybe $200 if I went internal wastegate but I wanted to do a wastegate yeet pipe and hear cool wastegate noises, external was totally worth it

TheCarPassionChannel for sure, only thing I wouldn’t recommend is eBay fuel pump. My OEM one died and I got one of the kemso ones, but it was flowing way too much and blew my stock fpr, took me a while to narrow down that issue, was causing weird idle issues and inconsistent AFRs that were impossible to correct without leave VEAL on 24/7

Hey guys, here's my experience with the CXRacing kit on my 1.8, just to add to Greg's data on the CX section of the video. TL;DR: Good mid-tier setup, not too expensive, not too cheap. Not best fab, not the lowest quality. Fits well, minor adjustments. What I am running: -CXRacing T3 Turbo/Intercooler kit for 1.8, $1323 with discount -MSPNP2 $810 shipped -FM Happy Meal Clutch & Flywheel $699 -RX8 420cc Injectors -Walbro 255 fuel pump -AEM Wideband -AutoMeter Boost Gauge -MaxQ Coolant reroute and a new stock radiator Setup has around 2500 miles so far and pushing an estimated (double checked by Greg himself using virtual dyno) 248whp on 13psi and around 220wtq. Fine-tuned fueling on the basemap by me, AFR in WOT at 11.5, no changes to timing, as the basemap is very good (yet quite conservative) right off the bat. Watched all of Greg's Megasquirt how-to videos 40 times each and spend a lot of time testing settings in Tunestudio. It's all trial and error. Next up is getting the car professionally dyno tuned. The main thing about the CXRacing kit is the downpipe and manifold. I purchased their "v2" for the 1.8, which is apparently a thousand times better than the 1.6 kit and older 1.8 kit, which include the rinky dink manifolds that cracks if you breathe on them (according to Miata bois from meets I been to) ALSO: The DP comes with 2 welded bungs for Wideband o2's but I truly dislike the placement. One's too close to the turbo and the order is almost upside down, which is bad for sensors. I've drilled and welded my own o2 bung at the bottom end of the DP. The V2 is a lot better, the manifold has really good welds and seems very sturdy and is thick walled, 11 gauge. I had absolutely ZERO fitment issues with the turbo, DP and manifold. It all just worked together nicely. Good quality V-band clamps included for DP. Able to keep AC and PS. The intercooler setup for the CXRacing, included in the kit, is also very good and very popular. It does the job and fits well. HOWEVER: You do have to cut a hole in the fender to run the intercooler piping after the turbo with this kit. I was okay with this. Good quality black silicone couplers and decent T-bolt clamps. Comes with hardware to mount everything up, fitment was spot on. The TURBO itself, is a half decent chinacharger. The wastegate is a 2 port IWG, which is great for electronic boost control. However, you will HAVE to port the wastegate hole (kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZqZn2hsYpeIjZI)--- Greg's how-to on this topic. It's exactly what I did in order to eliminate boost creep and control boost with 4 port MAC solenoid with MS, also suggested by our father, CRAIG. RELIABILITY: 2500 miles in, no issues. Zero fitment issues and zero faults thus far. Knock on wood. The oil pressure line seemed like the weak point, but nothing that hi-temp silicone for the gasket and thread sealant couldn't fix. The only real low quality point in the whole kit was the exhaust manifold gasket. It was the cheap ebay pore-y looking one, and failed about 1500 miles. I replaced with a 4 layer, metal OEM gasket and problem fixed. The T3 flange gasket supplied is a high quality metal one, and have not had any leaks. The other thing, which was preference, was the location of the o2 bungs as I previously said. All in all, I think this whole setup is a good bang for buck as it is not the cheapest (in quality or money) nor the best quality/most expensive. I think it's great mid-tier kit that requires very minimal modification, and could provide a lot more power if you wanted it to. I'm happy at 250whp and I don't feel like I'm pushing the kit to the limit yet. If you read all this, thank you for taking the time and happy BRAPS!

I currently boosted my 92 1.6 Miata with the Ebay DYI T3 turbo kit, stock ecu with the AFM and stage 1 XTD clutch and 13 pound lightweight flywheel. Running perfectly. Hardest part of the build is intercooler piping, i had to order extra elbows. Routing it was a pain because i decided to keep the AC. And also drilling and tapping the oil pan since the ac is in the way. Now i did bought black mamba oil feed line and return line, vacuum lines, FMU, and Flyin Miata o2 sensor modifier, a Narrowband, and get a custom down pipe made to plug with my ISR cat-back exhaust. You will also have to buy and change your engine oil and filter, new coolant, water lines, drill bits and taps for the oil pan. 3 layer exhaust manifold gasket and make sure you get the cast exhaust manifold instead of the tubular one since they tend to crack with heat. I also have a 1.8 torsen LSD and 1.8 Miata injectors running a safe 8 pounds of boost and a 8 degree timing on the engine because i have an intercooler. I used the high pressure oil port on the side of the engine so i did had to buy the AN4 fitting. All said and done i feel i have a happy medium build. Just know that if you chose to do an eBay kit, you will have to buy extra stuff and will have to do custom modification to the piping, manifold, intercooler mounting brackets.... if i had to do it again, i would probably buy a full kit, just because it takes a lot of time to custom fit everything. Also if you don’t have basic mechanic knowledge do not attempt to install an eBay DIY kit, and just know that you better plan on having the car down for more than 2 days, so don’t attempt if that is your only car. You better plan on having a back up car while you install the kit. FYI: The boost gauge and blow off valve and boost controller supplied with the kit work great by the way. Also currently saving up to buy a Megasquirt ecu. This car is just my project car therefore it is not a priority.

When it comes to the cx racing kit i have had it for 2 years... 1. The manifold is bullitproof, the person that built my first engine was asinine, and when it grenaded the manifold took on the fat hit. There was barely a scratch on it. The original turbo has never failed me (running 18 psi) and everything lined up perfectly! I whole heartedly vouch for this kit! I am in not way related to or sponsored by CX Racing but they made a great product and at a good price!

Excellent video, sooo helpful.. for anyone in the uk wanting that 250bhp figure, imprezza td04L turbo is a good option (low mileage turbos are just £100, lots available over here), suiting the kraken Mani and downpipe (£600).. then using a motorsport electronics me221 pnp ecu is the usual setup (£650). Clutch - £300 rx8 injectors £80, wideband £80, intercooler £100,- or scrap yard rover 400 (nearly free!) So can be done very reliably and pretty cheaply too.. :-)

To those that have read Greg's updated article and are interested in Revent Shop, be warned. You will more than likely not get your kit for over a year. I placed an order and was quoted 5-8 weeks, and was met with excuses after excuses as to the delays, including excuses as to why I couldn't get a hold of him. After a year and 1 month, I finally gave the guy a deadline to when I needed the kit or I go elsewhere and he still couldn't meet that. At that point I had built up enough money to buy a Flyin Miata kit, received the kit in a week, and am loving every bit of it.

New here with my first NA Miata with the 1.6. I’ll be boosting it on my own, I built my own turbo setup on my Honda Del sol, having mig and Tig welders at home makes it all so much easier. But I used an eBay tubular manifold and modified it and reinforced the welds on it, and used random intercooler piping pieces and just welded it as I need to and it came out nice and clean. Had a Garrett t25 but am now running an amazon special Turbo and it spoils great, runs fantastic at 9psi around 250whp. Can’t wait to build my setup for the Miata, main concern is the tuning software that’s the expensive bit it seems

I just wanted to share that i made the mistake of thinking that the diy/solder-your-self ms3-box would only cost 445$ + shipping it turned out that you also need to buy the ms3x-card to have the same functionality which brings you up closer to the ms2pnp-price and i ended up ordering a ms2pnp instead to keep to (my strategy) bolton-only-mods..

Greg, what I personally have found with the widebands is its not the brand, but it's the distance people are fitting them away from the turbo (eg to far away). If you read the bosch official documentation on the lsu4.9 sensors, they can handle up to ~900°c which your engine will never see, without it blowing up!

I'm about to start my turbo build using a td04 turbo from subaru forester 2.0 and have a manifold and downpipe made by my friend who's a pro welder. The most expensive thing on my shoping list should be an megasquirt but we'll see. Anyway this video motivated me to start wrenching on my miata a bit more

Biggest thing that some people need to consider is the time investment. Replacing a clutch a second time because the first one was trash or troubleshooting a leak because you have a cheap blow-off valve means time that you don't get to spend towards your career, family, friends, charity, etc.

Informative video man, holy shit! Funny to compare my setup and being remembered that mine is more custom than i thought.. Some Specs: Garret GT2860 RS with a custom RB26 elbow from a Skyline. Custom manifold and 3''downpipe.. Audi R8 Red Top Coilpacks Mitsubishi Evo 5 Fuelpump and intercooler Mitsubishi Evo 8 Dumpvalve ECU and Sensors are all Haltech.. And more, producing > 309,4 HP on the crank.. It's pretty robust, running this setup with no issues for 2 years now.

The flywheel weight helps with spooling as the turbo builds more boost under load. That's why when you rev in neutral you don't get much boost. A heavier flywheel puts the engine under more load and hence builds better boost quicker. That's my understanding of it.
@TheCarPassionChannel
@TheCarPassionChannel 4 жыл бұрын
I don't buy it. The engine is under the load of pulling the car, a little disc in the middle being 10 vs 20 pounds shouldn't matter.

I agree on everything except the XTD clutch. I've ran the stage 2 with light flywheel in 2 different turbo cars for several years without issue. I've drifted my 200ish hp Miata for 2 seasons without the first slip. Until I make big boy power, I'll continue to run their clutch. It's probably been the most reliable aftermarket parts on my car. Haha

Hey Greg, thanks for the mention. We have been following your stuff for a long time and love it. One small correction, our hotside kit comes complete with a turbo and only costs £1080 or $1380 so considerably better value than the other kits. Keep up the great work and hit us up if you ever want to do another project, Doug.

Yeah I worded it kind of funny there, I meant that if you were to run a cheap TD04 with the Kraken kit, you could get down close to the price of your kit (which is super reasonably priced). On my info sheet I have it listed at $1429, probably just a conversion accuracy difference. And I think it would be legit to do a G19 Turbo Kit install! Maybe if I can find a friend who wants to go turbo I can work on a video install for you guys!

Great content. I have a few questions I'd like to ask. 1. When will you have to upgrade your injectors? How much boost can you run before having to upgrade injectors? 2. Can you get 180kw with cheap turbo and A set of camshafts and port flowed head? 3. What if your car is front wheel drive? Is the gearbox and diff much stronger because they are in 1 package? 4. What if your engine was a reverse flow. Intake port and exhaust port in same direction? What must you do to get the most amount of hp without heat issues

After doing a few turbo builds myself, just gotta say good job in covering topics! The oooooooooone thing I noticed was you only talked about megasquirt. There are other options such as haltech, adaptronic, motec, etc
@TheCarPassionChannel
@TheCarPassionChannel 5 жыл бұрын
Right, as well as a ton of options for other parts you can use in the kit as well. I chose to narrow it down mostly to parts that are commonly used in the Miata community, otherwise it would have been a 2 hour video that took a month to edit, haha. But those are all great options, I know a lot of people that prefer Haltech way more than MS. But 90% of Miatas are on MS, so the community support is huge and I decided not to go into detail about other options.

I did not have a good experience with Bell parts or with their company, so I left them out of the video as I don't like to make it a practice of putting information out for thousands of people based on just one bad experience. But, there are a lot of people on BEGI/Bell kits that are completely satisfied!

Installed a 1.8L CX Racing kit on my NA MX5 and it's actually not bad at all. Fitment us close in all areas and the only real problem was the heater hose hardline that attaches to the headers and I had to take a small cut out of the hood apart from that it was mostly straight forward
