We have moved on from non-stick cook ware a long time ago. We have all steel but this year we got into cast iron pans and it’s been a lovely experience. Once you get the hang of it, your cast irons become so central to cocking. This morning I even managed to flip my eggs in the air! Only side effect is your forearms will get a workout!
@ilonabaier60423 күн бұрын
Interesting experience. My tip for you is to have your iron levels checked on a regular basis, as too high levels are more dangerous than not enough iron! This happened to me when I cooked with cast iron too often. My iron levels shot through the roof and it took a while for them to come down. I cook with iron now only a couple of times per month, rather sparingly. You can google this and see for yourself. My doc has also confirmed this. Perhaps Dr Patrick will respond.

@DrewPeabawls3 күн бұрын
@@ilonabaier6042 indeed these are also health risks but in general seems like you only need to avoid cooking acidic foods and make sure the pan is always properly seasoned. After that I believe the next risk would be dropping it on your foot. I’ll check my iron levels though!
@ilonabaier60422 күн бұрын
@@DrewPeabawls Cooking acidic foods does extract more iron from the pan but I never cooked or heated up for example apple sauce. Sometimes I would cook recipes with tomatoes and tomato sauce. I have been vegan for 20 years and my iron intake from my diet alone is adequate but not extreme. My high iron reading was from the pan. But as they say every body and everybody reacts differently and this is why having regular blood work done is a good idea. I enjoyed cooking with my iron pan because it was fun and the food tasted better. Proper seasoning is essential. Many youtube vids recommend flaxseed oil so I have used this. Bon appétit.

It’s easy to avoid plastic for day-day food storage with glass containers in the fridge, but as far as bulk food storage I don’t know what to do Whether you buy frozen food (i.e. you mentioned berries) or you’re growing it at home - most likely a lot of it needs to be stored or frozen and it’ll end up in plastic one way or another. Silicone - what about Diva cups? Basically it’s plastic and it sits inside your body for a week/month. Also, we just built a house and the plumbing lines are PEX… plastic! Would you just not thaw the milk in heat (instead thawing in fridge or room temp water) to reduce exposure? What would/did you do?
@StevenWDixКүн бұрын
You can buy a soft yoga mat, measure and cut strips to wrap the jars - insulating them and protecting against casual bumps. They can be held in place with zip ties. If the yoga matt makes you paranoid you can buy burlap or canvas material to sow an outer layer or even a protective bag with a carrying strap made out of canvas or burlap - which hold up better than cotton getting accidently wet. Big rubber bands are always handy to keep around if a seam gets torn etc and you gotta do something else. The wider the mouth, the easier to clean. Hope these tips help, maybe then you do not have to freeze anything.

Modern homes are being designed with PEX water pipes instead of copper. It's still not clear how much PEX leeches into the water, but whole house filtration systems aren't the last step to your faucet, they still travel through plastic pipes In modern homes. The only information about PEX safety is provided by the manufacturers of the material, obvious conflict of interest there

do we really know that microplastics are causing problems? Seems to be an assumption based on loose correlations. What is the actual causality?
@mercantilistic3 күн бұрын
We do know that microplastics are endocrine disruptors, they mess with your hormone levels, this is very well known.
@jays73183 күн бұрын
We don't know for sure, but there are signs. Some of the leaching chemicals have been shown to be endocrine disruptors. Also, all our organs have been shown to accumulate microplastics (liverm brain, testes, etc), which is concerning

@ I get it-intuitively it would seem bad -and there certainly is no harm in assuming so. But just playing devils advocate. Like the main narrative about “processed foods is that are correlated with healthy issues that are really representative of obesity not the chemicals or nature of the food
@geometerfpv28043 күн бұрын
There is no such thing as "causality". Think about it: how would you show "causality"? You gonna look at the little molecules going in there and causing the problems in real time? Data correlations are all we will ever have. And in this case, there really is a lot of data. It has become pretty mainstream, it's not even a "hippy person" take anymore.
@Gsp_in_NYC3 күн бұрын
@@geometerfpv2804 I suspect someday science will find causality in certain things---but again, with "processed foods" there is a correlation to things like diabetes, high blood pressure, and other metabolic pathologies---but if you really examine this--it is mostly related to eating "too much" of the processed foods and thus really is correlated to obesity. there probably is nothing really that damaging about all the chemicals and proessed nature--it is that people are getting too many calories. one could probably be healthy on processed foods if they maintain a normal weight---so the narrative is completely misleading with these very general terms about foods.
