When I was in my early 20's I worked in a large machine shop with non stop noise and loud obnoxious machines. Most of the employees where jerks and it was a hard place to work. We were given an hour lunch break and almost everyone gathered in the break room and just continued the noise and chatter. I discovered that I could sneak off to the very quite warehouse, eat my lunch and then recline on pallets of card board boxes. I discovered that in 15-20 minutes of relaxing, clearing my mind I could recharge myself as much as if I was getting on a full nights sleep. I continue to do this 40 years later with the same results. I have always just called it a nap, but I now realize it is something more.

I can’t speak for Hinduism, but in Buddhism, meditation is supposed to be a relaxed state of letting go where you abandon the process of thinking and doing. In fact the way he describes yoga nidra is exactly how meditation has been taught to me by various monks, and that the idea of using meditation to focus is completely wrong. The goal of meditation is not to focus on the breath. Focusing on the breath or a meditation object of choice is not required, it’s just a useful technique to help you relax if you find your mind is wandering/etc. Another common practice in meditation and very emphasized practice is to have body awareness. Buddha teaches to scan the body and to relax, rest, let go of thoughts and intentions, be in the moment, etc. I’m only commenting this because the pervasive conception of meditation as a concentration practice is the exact opposite of the purpose and essence of meditation

That is just one form of meditation. I think a meditation practice needs a combination of concentration as well as letting go. I will say I always found concentration practices to be boring/tedious so I have a bias towards letting go practices. Awakening/Realization can happen in many ways and there are many paths. I find it fascinating and sad at the same time how so many people live their whole lives in a subject/object split. Very sad to me that so many people do not realize their true nature that is right in front of their face. We are so wrapped up in our identities and thoughts, that we never stop, turn within and inquire.

well, maybe for some. ADHD is another cause of restlessness at bedtime. To manage, I pace gently inside my house while watching something educational (its not exciting, so I have to press in with my attention). I practice "Yoganidra" regularly using "Shavasan" (Corpse Pose) & deep breathing and due to my long practice, I can sometimes go beyond one hour. Quite often, after about 30 to 40 minutes, my pulse rate drops to 50 BPM ! It is truly refreshing. I am always fully awake, but my body goes into deep sleep. At the end, I come out of it slowly. One should be disciplined enough to really practice total lifelessness without moving any part of your body (except the lungs) even a millimeter. You should learn to resist the urges for small scratching or moving a limb, that you would feel initially. Once you overcome the urge for couple of minutes, it will go away automatically and then will not bother you again. Being truly in Shavasan and breathing deeply is the key. Thoughts in the mind will keep coming and going.

As these improve add some form of weight / resistance training once or twice a week. The key is to improve balance, flexibility, cardio capacity, and strength in a gradual manner without any injury which will set you back and add frustration. Quality of life is key. You need balance, flexibility, cardio fitness and strength. Train to improve without injury. Meditation is not only focused awareness. In Patangali's 8 limbs of Yoga this is called Dharana. There are two higher levels-, Dhyana and Samadhi. It's certainly not new agie. And intention setting and showing gratitude, you will find, is a very important part of this practice- (which Western science really needs to explore and embrace in a more holistic and contextual way) These three stages of Meditation are the foundations of authentic Yoga and Meditation. Thousands of years of observation and progressive development supports these practices. Western science is just tipping the top of that iceberg. Is it reasonable to assume that this practice could be helpful for those suffering with moderate forms of various mental illnesses such as Anxiety disorder, OCD, ADHD, and perhaps situational depression? As someone dealing with everything just mentioned, I get very bogged down by my obsessions and suffer from severe mental fatigue. Seems like it's safe to assume that NSDR would at least provide some relief? I actually mediated (in a way that seemed more like NSDR because I didn't focus on anything) once for about 15 minutes before a meeting and felt fantastic/rejuvenated for the next several hours. I'm going to try NSDR with scripts everyday for the next month (for 10-20 minutes each day, maybe 30) and report my results here. If anyone else reads this and wants to join, let me know here and let's update every week or so!

Thank God for the real meditators in the comments, calling out the renaming and “demystifications” of these ancient practices. This video exhibits the worst thing about the Western mind… Taking practices that are supposed to bring the practitioner towards deeper existential reality and realization of truth and rebranding them as something to help you “be more productive“ while running around in an egoic illusion of yourself. It’s actually sickening. It’s like trying to analyze why the warm hug of a mother is good for an infant and then training a robotic puppet because it can hug more efficiently than a mother can. It’s all head and no heart

The way I see it, this is actually a positive step towards the meeting of science and mysticism. Science is so rigidly objective. It will eventually take another step, and another.

Ironically, after solving what used to seem like an unsurmountable challenge, I stopped fearing, and stopped practicing my version of yoganidra. This lead to significantly decreased creative performance, and overall productivity. I used to call it over-resting that I performed after having top quality sleep out of fear to start the day out of stress and burden of responsibility that felt fate-determining then, and for legit reasons. I am definitely going to perform it again, and keep it for good. Top quality shit it was.

The highest and most advanced form of meditation, is conversely the most simple form of meditation. It’s very similar to this, except you don’t need to lie down and listen to a script. You take the thought ‘I am’ and let it direct you back to the place of effortless witnessing. It’s actually the opposite to the whole ‘focusing’ meditation techniques. You stop focusing and allow everything to be as it is, while you simply rest in awareness, as awareness. I’ve measured resting heart rate and HRV doing this (using Oura ring) and the Oura ring app measures it as if you have been sleeping. It’s the most restful place one can be in besides deep sleep, because it’s effortless.
