We were in Paris a couple of weeks ago. I can’t thank you enough for mentioning the different entrances. Our tickets stated we could enter in the main entrance or the Carrousel. The main entrance line was so long, but using the Carrousel entrance we had no wait at all. That tip saved us so much time!

This video did not disappoint! So informative, and of course the art and artifacts were amazing. When I was a kid I saw the Mona Lisa at the Met in NYC. I remember thinking how small the Mona Lisa was and wondering why the adults were clamoring to see her! Kind of agree with Antoine! When I saw the painting of Liberté it made me think of the Statue of Liberty....just a thought!

The man who stole the Mona Lisa was an Italian called Vincenzo Peruggia (1881-1925), an amateur painter who worked at the Louvre. On the 21st of August 1911, he took the painting out of its frame and, putting it under his uniform, a large white blouse, walked out of the building. Two years later he tried to sell it to the director of the Uffizi Museum in Florence. The director went to see him with two policemen who arrested Peruggia. The thief did not resist and said he just wanted to return the painting to Italy where it belonged. He served 7 months in prison and died twelve years later of a heart attack.

The painting by Delacroix that decorates the ceiling of that room is entitled "Apollo Killing the Python" and it was celebrated by many as worthy of Rubens whom Delacroix admired and imitated in his use of bright, warm colours.

We stopped to Paris on a cruise. The port was in LeHavre, 3 hours from Paris. We had 6 hours round trip, and 3 hours in Paris. My husband and I planned our Paris itinerary down to the minute to decide if we wanted to try to do it. In 3 hours, we saw the Eiffel Tower, stood right under it, walked through the lawns, got souvenirs, uber'd to the Louvre, had an excessively long wait for the ladies room (I was going to explode), saw the Mona Lisa, Winged Victory and Venus De Milo, looked through a gift shop, got slightly lost finding the exit (entered through the pyramid and came out somewhere else past a bunch of amazing shops??), got some baguettes, took photos outside the pyramid on those block things, complete with our finger on top of the pyramid...Walked from the Louvre to Place De La Concored, and made it back on our charter bus with 15 minutes to spare! 😂😂😂😂 I don't recommend that high speed of an itinerary unless you're prepared to ruuuuun. But we are so proud of ourselves 😂😂😂 Lesson learned -plan new trip to Paris NOT on a cruise and actually spend some real time enjoying the city.

Going to a big gallery like this is something that is impossible to absorb. You hit a point where you become “all arted out” well, I do…I spent several hours at the NY Met Museum, and left feeling that i had barely scratched the surface there. Most of the art Museums in Australia are smaller, you can see most of what is on display in a morning or afternoon, and… you rarely experience crazy crowding I always knew that the crowds were huge but I hadn’t seen just how crazy. Note to self, plan your Louvre visit for winter!

Ive been last year in octobre in Paris and i visited Louvre twice. When i realised how huge it is, i could not believe how amazing this place is. Idk if u can give this place a proper tour in a few months even. Every painting is story for itself, and u can spend hour starring at it. Luckily this year im going again and im gonna go to Louvre at lest once, but this time i rly need to plan this visit

Once again, this is such a fabulous video and shows the value of spending money to save time and sanity (our mantra)! Also, book tickets in advance if not using a guide. We know people who waited over 3 hours just to get a ticket. For anyone who feels overwhelmed, a guide is such a great idea. When we took our kids (10-14 at the time), I had them make a list of anything they wanted to see and they all cheekily said "the Garbage Pail Kid" aka, Mona Lisa. We entered the Louvre just as they opened with our prebooked tickets and made a beeline for her with a large group of other people. We then looped back just a bit to see a couple paintings I wanted to see, a couple sculptures, statues, and when we saw the last one, we had only been in the museum for 30 minutes. We walked more - we let our kids lead the way - and got food, probably at the museum for 4-5 hours total, but it was a really great experience.

Colleen and Antoine, you really outdid yourselves with this video. I have lived in Paris for years, and I learned a lot from this. As a child I remember the entrance to this enormous museum was a little door to the south-west of the pyramid. I have never used a guide in Paris anywhere because my father was a historian who gave us the low-down on everything. But Whalid is fantastic and I would love to have him as a guide. When people tell me they want to go to the Louvre to see the Mona Lisa, I try to dissuade them. I don't think it is worth the trouble. I haven't seen it since the early 70's before it was put behind glass. There are so many other fantastic things to see there. My personal top favorites are the Coronation of Napoleon, Liberty Leading the People, and the Victory of Samothrace. That is a tall order because there are so many other things which I absolutely love there as well. There has been talk in France of rebuilding the Tuileries Palace in order to display more of the Louvre's collections. In spite of it's enormous size, they have so much in storage.

Excellent video! You have given me confidence to return. My last few trips to Paris (I go for two months, every March-April) I deliberately avoided the Louvre because of the crowds and chaos. With some 200 museums in Paris, I decided to focus on all the other ones - and returning to my favorites. Now I think I’m ready to tackle the Louvre again - perhaps hiring a guide. So, thank you. Btw I’m sure you have mentioned this in the past videos, but one of my favorite cafés, Café Marly, is hidden behind pillars near the Louvre Pyramid. Great people-watching. FanTAStic video!!! Very helpful, interesting from beginning to end and I would like to visit. Don’t really care about the Mona Lisa but, there is a very large battle scene across the room or around the corner that I have seen images of that I would like to see closer. Vibrant reds and whites and city walls and it looks very realistic. Not blood and guts, though there were probably red splotches. I don’t remember the details but do remember the size, the realism, the depth and the detail. Skills far superior to mine, I believe, but I would like to see. I remembered it during your tour. An interesting point about the Mona Lisa being so popular because it was stolen. Would the same apply to Vermeer's The Concert if it's ever recovered, I wonder?

Thank you so much, the Louvre is on our list as a full day tour. Can you tell me are you able to leave the Louvre to get lunch, at one of the many bistros you had in another video I watched , and go back n without having to pay again?
@LesFrenchiesTravel
@LesFrenchiesTravel Ай бұрын
No. Once you leave your ticket is complete. There is a restaurant inside the museum. And there is a good court in the exit area if you stay line and want a quick bite after. But you would need a new ticket to get back in.

After visiting the Louvre 2 weeks ago I understand why people get lost. There are room numbers on the map but I haven’t seen a lot of them in the rooms themselves. I think they should really improve that. Fortunately all elevators are lettered so that sometimes helped with my orientation.

Felt like I walked through the same room 10x trying to figure out if I missed something. Being able to cross off rooms on a paper map would be nice.

Lovely! When we visited the Assyrian section was being refurbished. How could you forget to mention that one wing was occupied by the Ministry of Finances, which had to be physically evicted, even before the atrocious pyramid was built?😂 How could you skip the Rubens series?

My husband and I are coming to Roland Garros and we will be in Paris on the first Sunday of June, I read somewhere that entry to the Louvre is free on the first Sunday of the month, is that true?

Not all the musées are free the first Sunday of each month, only some of them. For example, It is the case in Paris for le musée d'Art moderne, le Centre Pompidou et le musée d'Orsay.

If it's any help, we went to the Denon wing first and it wasn't too bad, had lunch, then explored the Richelieu wing after and it was pretty empty. I think more people hang around Winged Victory and Mona Lisa which is fine because where we were was pretty peaceful!

I'm so sorry that was your experience. I truly hope you can make it back! And here's hoping as they get older, your kids will look back and appreciate that you took them. I have one kid who is definitely NOT a museum person but she looks back even a couple years later and her opinion is "yeah, it was pretty cool, I guess." I'll take it.

The trick to seeing the Louvre with kids is to build their interest (the fort, the mummies, etc). Another trick is to hire three guides that do scavenger hints for kids and families. We've talked with quite a few families that really enjoyed it.

Another excellent video - entertaining and informative. Your guide was charming and quite knowledgeable. I can’t believe you were able to see so much in just two hours! But that’s the advantage of having a good guide who can point out salient details and explain their importance. In my visit to Paris I spent two whole days in the Louvre, and saw all the things he pointed out, but they were kind of lost in the oceans and oceans of incredible art. I would’ve liked to have spent more time looking at Marianne for instance. I do wish you would vary your attire somewhat. We’re all kind of tired of seeing that same marinière. A loose fitting dark print top would be so much more flattering for you. Anyway, I’m no fashion maven, but variety can be a good thing. That aside, I love all your videos, and I hope you continue to create content as excellent as this. Thank you so much!

Sorry my choice of outfit bothers you. I don't recall anyone complaining about Steve Jobs or Obama stating the same thing all the time. I guess it's the plight of being a woman to be judged this way. My plan is to continue creating valuable content for people who are more interested in info about Paris than what shirt I am wearing.

By the end of the 20th century, I accompanied two couples of fellow linguists - one American, the other Japanese [alphabetical order]. They wanted to see Mona Lisa and Michael Angelo's slaves. Mona Lisa was not hard to find, but I got lost on my way to the slaves. When we eventually reached them, we were exhausted, and decided to call it a day. LOL
