Honest moment here, I've been so aggravated with my house these last 3 or 4 months. I've been decluttering for 2 years (or more) and have been feeling very frustrated at the, seemingly, lack of progress. Y'ALL!!!! We cleaned and put our house ALL the way back together from Christmas choas in LESS than 2 hours this morning!! Mopped and everything, (I rarely mop) it was amazing. Yes. Been decluttering for years too and do 5 min pick ups and aim to leave every room better than when I entered it and still the house isn’t tidy but I know it’s getting better and easier to clean. It’s all about the mindset shift! Congrats on getting it together and doing the mopping. I bought a new easy to use, simple mop a few months ago, it’s a game changer! It made me realise that my main enemy was a mop where the sponge was always falling off.

I had bought my son 2 pairs of jeans from Kohls. They were cheap (already on sale, 30% off coupon and Kohl's cash.) They didn't fit and when I went to return them the line was longing! I made the decision to donate them to a wonderful organization called "Gifts for All God's Children." No guilt and got back some time in my busy day. Praying they bless a beautiful child.

My third youngest son is on the behavioral spectrum with a tentative diagnosis of Asperger’s. A lot of our extended family doesn’t understand how exhausting it can be for us on a normal day, let alone on a holiday when we have a million places to be. I got really short, upset and we left a family gathering sooner than I anticipated. But I needed my son to feel better more than I needed to stress him out for the sake of people who don’t understand the extent of his struggles. We took a breather at home, some napped and I enjoyed some silence before we left again. We get cast out more than I care to admit because of how our son acts. But that’s just who he is. This coming year, I promised my husband and myself we will prioritize our immediate family’s wellbeing for get togethers more than we did this year. We are the only ones who have to deal with the fallout of having a son potentially on the spectrum. Other family have kids who are content to do whatever for hours and are quiet, “well behaved”. We have four boys with one who needs extra help. We have no semblance of a normal family 😂 I say that with all the love in the world to all of my boys. It’s more important to have them together and feel safe with us than to sacrifice our emotions to make other people happy!
@SassySue67
@SassySue67 Ай бұрын
Maybe next year you prioritize your son by staying home on Christmas. As a child my parents never did the house to house visits. We got to stay home and enjoy our presents. My mom opened the house to anyone who wanted to visit us after 6pm Christmas night. She would have simple food items for guests. Just one 68 year olds memory of childhood Christmas.

Hello Mary,my youngest son has Asperger’s. He is grown now, owns his own home and has a job he loves. His preadolescent and adolescence was very challenging in that he had many meltdown s when he was stressed or overwhelmed. To help limit the meltdowns, we had as much structure as possible and we limited play dates to one other child, limited family activities to our immediate family and built in safe people for school and church. We focused on the basics at first, but then we started working towards independence . He still does not like big crowds but he does enjoy smaller functions. Asperger children have obstacles to overcome,but they are also blessed with gifts as well. Sending you prayers and encouragement.

Dawn, you literary changed my life for the better. In the begining of 2024 i have been watching your videos for a few months and decluttering just inconsistently but i have made a promise to myself that i would declutter my whole house by the end of the year. Well, time passed, i did get more into decluttering but it was still not enough. I have saved some of your videos that felt more inspireing to me on a separate playlist soni had my homework done. Just a few days before Christmas i realised a will not be able to finish decluttering by the end of the year, since i will have a full house between Christmas and new year. So i got my airpods on, played the previously saved playlist and decided i had to do something now. Because i really want peace of mind and i do deserve a easy to manage home. So i cried a little and then got my black trash bag and started rage decluttering. By the end of the day i have made incredibile progress, more than all i have made in an entire year. But now i feel eliberated, i managed to enjoy Christmas with my family like never in my life and i fell in love with my house all over again. So, thank you, Dawn! ❤❤❤

I was so stressed about Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. But I felt soooo much better after asking our families to bring a pot luck dish to the dinners. The appreciation from the hosts and guests was very much part of our evenings. The adult grandchildren took control of the preparation, serving and cleaning up. I decided maybe I could do another Christmas in 2025 with their help. And yes my declutterred house was less work and decorating prior the evening with little cleaning afterwords. I have been binge your KZbin episodes. I am up to 2 years..Thank you Dawn for your advice. It really works. Happy New Year to you and all your loved ones.

Decluttering for handicapped: I'm 75 with arthritis. I scoot around the house in a walker. I used a sturdy, rather small utility cart to declutter. I used cooling racks zip tied, on the back and sides of the cart, an overlay - no cutting - to keep items from falling off the cart. I place a box in the back I my SUV and make several trips to fill the box. I deliver to Pet Pals thrift store and they unload. Previously, Items were taken off the top shelves and bottom shelves by family and placed at a level I could reach them to sort. P.S. I tended to leave the full cart a day or two then sorted. By then I was tired of seeing them and could make better choices to discard items. My family does NOT want my stuff. Any sentimental items I have given to them over time or during the declutter "adventure."

I was decluttering my house for years and years and years. Extended family kept filling it up. Finally I just gave up and moved abroad. I told my husband and kids that they were allowed to bring 1 luggage and 1 carry-on each. Now I just throw everything I don't feel like we need in the trash. The funny thing was that when we sold the house and moved away, all my autoimmune problems went away. Apparently I'm not gluten intolerant anymore.

We hosted a huge married couple event for our church. I hosted a lunch for my friends. We hosted Christmas Eve. In Europe this is our "Second Christmas Day" and is a wondrful relax and reflect day. We go for a houehold/ family walk, and make fried potatoes and vegetables from yesterday - we made extra for this purpose - and chill out. We would never be taking down the Christmas festive garb; though we are gently organising things a bit. Most people will take the festive decor down within the 12 days after Christmas, so we can still be glitzy and twinkly for New Year.

I now spend Christmas alone and like it. I get to order a meal or make something simple, and watch some movies while doing craft and Photoshopping old photos for new artwork. There’s no family drama and I get a pressie that I want after a lifetime of asking “Do these people actually know me?”. Some may feel this is selfish and not a special day that’s designed to be spent with friends and family. After a 32yr marriage to a narcissist I just want and need peace and happy memories and to reset and to me that is the Christmas. I removed the stigma of being alone for Christmas too. I also find I don’t over eat or buy excessively which is a bonus. It’s interesting that you were saying, “It’s (Christmas) over now.” I used to get so stressed with Christmas until I realised it was one day and one meal. Obviously there are a lot of family/school/work obligations at this time but the concept of one meal and one hit me hard and since then I don’t worry about it or think everything has to be perfect to enjoy it and to only have lovely people in my life instead of someone that wrecks every special occasion. ❤

Dawn thank you for being so authentic! For keeping it real! Christmas 🎄 brings so many emotions excitement, gratitude, tears of joy and sadness, frustration and so on. This morning before going to work and realizing I had a little time and energy I just put a timer for 5 minutes to pickup stuff and take it there right now. After the 5 minutes I went for another 5 minutes and actually felt pretty good after. And then off to work.

Circling back.. I got my Christmas decorations put away, I took all the ornaments off my tree and left my tree up, it looks nice but not cluttered. Then I went through and did a quick whole house declutter/organization and finally put up some decorations on my walls after living in my new house for almost 3 months😅 This was the motivation I needed! I’ve been decluttering and watch you and Cass, enjoying it very much the last few months! It feels wonderful to keep going! I’m in transition to semi retirement, much less on my plate. You just mentioned cards and sentimental, meaningful cards. I have some writings from our late daughter, (she passed of CF) and one of my sons whose children and wife write meaningful moments with me each year on Mother’s Day. I try to do daily journaling, readings, intentions, and am also a “creative” who likes to live by the motto “busy hands, happy heart”. I am never bored. I also used cardboard and duck tape to create mailrooms, sleeping tents, the Mayflower (for Thanksgiving play) etc. those memories and mention of those times are now held in my combination art/intention/memory journals. They don’t have to be large or overly done. But they hold precious handwriting and memories I take out from time to time and it reminds me of who I am and what my legacy is when I question what my life has meant to others and myself. Creative Adventure, imagination, solid, kind and strong. I can be counted on when the going gets rough. When I feel weak, or unrestful, I glance through my journals. There is my legacy. And those I love - those here physically and those dear. ❤ Just a thought if someone finds that useful, it’s kind of a partial purge! But saving the words and writing. ❤

So… I felt so depleted on Monday, Dec. 23. I was exhausted, frustrated, overwhelmed and feeling completely unready for Christmas. I didn’t feel like I had finished shopping, nothing I had already purchased was wrapped, I had not baked anything… I was actually feeling angry. That made me so sad because I absolutely love Christmas. It is my favorite time of year, yet I was angry. I have been wanting to opt out of gift giving with my family (sisters, brother-in-laws, grown nieces, nephews, etc. ) for years. Our main event is also at my parents on Christmas Eve. We usually do “White Elephant” giving, but none of us need anything, we constantly talk about decluttering, having too much stuff, not enough time and stressing over gift buying. Well, we made it through Christmas. Christmas Eve night my younger son, daughter-in-law and myself discussed how we were all “over” the stressing out because of unnecessary gift buying. We only want to rest, relax, and enjoy time with our family and friends. Myself and my daughter-in-law are full time teachers in public schools and my younger son and husband are both full time teachers and coach as well. Our older son serves in the military. There are no grandchildren for us yet, but there will be in 5 months. 💕💕💕We are exhausted by the time we get out of school -usually the Friday before Christmas. We agreed that we no longer want to participate in the family gift giving (except for maybe the younger kiddos). I mentioned that today because a conversation came up where it was shared that my great nieces received multiples of the same toys. Believe it or not I received lash back for my suggestion that we not purchase adult gifts next year! I politely disclosed that my husband and I would be opting out in 2025. I will happily take a regift/declutter box of my new/unused/gently used items and let my family “shop/choose a gift” from my stash. 🤣🤣🤣. However, I have made my stance on gift purchasing next year for adults who need or want for nothing. I suppose I’m the family “Scrooge” now, but I’m sticking to it. I can no longer live my life trying to please everyone else or being guilted or shamed. Thank you Dawn. I’m going to have to rewatch this. Happy New Year🎉🎉🎉

I've been advocating for dropping the gift exchange for years now (I'm working toward minimalism in my home & get overwhelmed w/all the extra stuff). Finally, this yr I said I'm not taking part, the rest of you can do what you want. My mom agreed & told everyone she also opted out. We did no exchange, & that took a load off for everyone - we are all adults now & are clueless about what the other people are into these days, so it was truly wasted money/effort (& stress!) anyway. My parents host & had house repairs happening that could've derailed family dinner, so my husband & I took a day to help them rearrange their home to host our group & then we decided to provide a catered meal for everyone so we could avoid a heavy cooking schedule. Mom didn't want to cook at all; I didn't want to cook the whole meal & the 3rd group in our family has to travel here, so catering was ideal. Mom & I just provided a few homemade desserts & sides that we couldn't eliminate from our yearly tradition. Overall, everything was very relaxed & as a bonus, the bbq meal we bought was delicious. Win win win win!

@@wg742 That is so encouraging! How nice that you had time to help your parents out with their house and all agreed to a catered meal. I’m sure your family who was traveling appreciated that as well. You eliminated a great deal of stress for everyone. Maybe my family will eventually figure this out! But I have already declared to them, and given them 363 days notice 🤣🤣 that myself and my husband will not be participating in gift giving for adults at my mom & dad’s in 2025. My mom will be 77 and my dad 75 in a few days. We don’t have a full meal on Christmas Eve- my Dad usually cooks a ham, my mom will make beans and/or potato salad, and the other families will bring sides, snacks, desserts, etc., Since there are 27-30 of us, we do buffet style. It’s still quite a bit of preparation/planning and my mom also continues to work full time as a high school administrative assistant, so she’s exhausted too. May I ask if you have younger children in your family (under 18), and if so, do you buy for them, are names drawn for them, etc.,? There will be eight kiddos next year, under 18, ranging from 14 down to 6 months (the 6 month old will be our first grandchild). I’m not opposed to buying for the kids, but I have been buying for all 7 of the under 18s, and that is also very difficult, not to mention getting more and more expensive and we keep growing, so I’d like to pare that down as well. Happy New Year! 🎉🥳🎉

@@rhondamcgee2114 - I'm sorry you had another stressful holiday, and I'm so glad you got a great plan moving forward. I wanted to share with you, a teacher, how I indulge my love of giving without doing Christmas gift exchange at all. A very dear friend became a mom. Now she has two children, and the older one just started school. For most of this time, they have been a one-car family, which adds up to a lot of isolation with the company of only toddlers for most of the day unless family was visiting (mixed blessing, in-laws, clashing parenting styles). I decided to bring back the custom of "calling on people" by visiting in person when they were available to receive me. And I really wanted to connect with the kids because of how special it made me feel when my much older sister took time out for me. Gave me cool books. So of course, when I went shopping for gifts for birthdays, I thought of books! Neither regular bookstores nor teacher stores had the variety I was seeking and of course the prices were insane. So I did what any logical book lover would do: I started going to secondhand bookstores and thrift stores. Wow! For literally pennies on the dollar, there was a gold mine of goodies! So I stocked up so that each time I popped over to visit I could bring a book or two for the kids as a treat. (With full instructions to mom on where she could easily resell it if her bookcase got too full, if she didn't like it, if the kids didn't like it etc.) Fast forward from the beginning… The child in school is getting compliments on how well he can read compared to the other kids! When I see the kids anywhere they always ask "Do you have a book for me?" Music to my ears! (Even though mom has to correct them on their manners 🤣🤣🤣.) When my own daughter became an honorary "Tia" and godmother to a friend's child, she gifted the little girl with a song that she wrote about her, and recorded it while playing her ukulele. Totally made me cry when I heard it. 🥲 And she and I are having a great time thrifting together for books for these children. This is such a no-pressure tradition to bring love all through the year. I wish you many blessings in 2025, because giving up stress at Christmas is not the same thing as being a Scrooge!

I have a tip for “The Neon Shirt Problem.” I have one storage box dedicated to things like painting/ project clothes, costumes, and other spirit-wear type things. If someone “needs” a jersey or tie dye shirt or tiara, we have them, but they don’t take up closet space. Painting clothes are also there because I don’t need to store them in my valuable drawer space year round. I also keep my designated trick or treat costume in there (poodle skirt) and use it every year.

Dawn, we grew up in a very cluttered home and the fridge had so many pictures. Though I didn’t have a very cluttered home as a young mom, I did have pictures and kids magnets on the fridge. It was so normal for me. But when I cleared off the fridge doors of magnets and pictures, even schedules, after a few days I felt SO CLEAN AND TIDY in that space that had felt so CHAOTIC! Absolutely yes to that suggestion it works!! I’d recommend one of those shadow box frames for art work that you can keep putting the new work in if that is important in your current season of life!

After watching the whole gift giving issues, I am sooooo thankful that our families love gifts of homemade preserves. The only people that get store bought gifts are the grandchildren 18 years and younger. Everyone else gets a homemade gift basic with a few preserves, dehydrated apple slices ( a huge hit and absolute must) soup-in-a-jar, cookies-in-a-jar, and a tiny bit of baking. And the baskets are made according to family size. For instance a family of 6 gets more than a bachelor. Anyway … it makes Christmas shopping so easy and things just get used up.

Ready to un-decorate my house but my husband likes it up until New Years, so I am accommodating that🙄. We sit a garbage bag in the room as we start opening gifts & that helps somewhat with keeping the floor clear. Honestly, I started 2 weeks ago just by straightening up closets or drawers as I was in them or just trying to keep things picked up every day. "I live by the rule of, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" in all areas of my home. This one rule keeps my house feeling manageable for me....... Great Video today, Thanks Dawn for your time & sharing with us.....Something we do every year, if we receive something we don't care to keep we donate it. I always have an old Christmas gift bag full & I have no guilt about it. Someone else will enjoy those things.

I love the relaxed feel of Christmas after the main day and I feel I want to touch base with our ancient ancestors who celebrated the 12 days of Christmas, starting on 25th December through to 5th January. They celebrated many saints' feasts during that time. For example, today (Boxing Day, 26th Dec) is the Feast of St Stephen. Once all the leftovers are used up and family time spent together, then I feel it is time to sweep the boards clean and start afresh into the New Year (when children return to school). Your video gives me inspiration for when I am ready! Thank you!

Regarding wrapping paper, this year I decided to go rustic; I bought a large roll of plain brown paper to wrap the gifts and tied it with brown twine. It looked really nice, and I can use the paper to wrap presents during the rest of the year. Another thing I have done is save the comic section of newspaper (back when I received newspapers) and the recipients got a double whammy. Years ago, I used to send “care” packages wrapped in comics to my son when he worked at a camp during the summer. Everyone got to read the comics.

I have found a bin in the trunk of my car super helpful for returns and other things that need to be dropped off or taken somewhere.They are out of my space and off my need to get to list. I often jump in the car for a quick errand and if items are already in my car (with needed return slips etc.) I am able to quickly incorporate them towith my errand. I also intentionally don't buy things I have doubts about keeping from places I rarely shop at to simplify the time I spend returning things. I know I will be back to Walmart soon, so if there is something I am undecided about, I can buy it knowing returning it if it doesn't work, will only be a few seconds of my time on my next visit. 2. Christmas was very overstimulating for myself and kids. We have guests and the house is a wreck and there’s SO MUCH NEW STUFF. Need this reset ❤ thank you

The 12 Days of Christmas begins on Christmas Day and ends with the Epiphany in January. So I’m cleaning the house & picking up after Advent season & the lead up to Christmas (and we’ve spent the past week and a half with the flu at our house!). I have some ornaments to put out & want to add white fairy lights to brighten up the space & ring in the new year. Thanks for the motivation, community, & encouragement to take small steps & keep going as we are able. 🕊🎄✨

I LOVE Christmas, plan for months, handmade gifts this year I’ve been poorly with low B12 and Flu since early December. Every thing was pared down hardly any decorations up , less activities, family visits but lots of rest and it’s been ok and made me realise even though I enjoyed the big Christmas it was a load of stress. Been decluttering for 2 years with Dawn,Cass and Dana . It’s so worth it most the house can be put back together in 15 minutes. Just need to conquer the craft room😂😂😂😂

I may be the minority but I still am enjoying my holiday decor and we are having a large New Years Eve party so the Christmas decorations are staying up until Jan 3rd. I love it !! But I did make sure it’s clean and tidy!!
