I genuinely think Liu was the one who survived in the end. The last words in the story were “only one of the two brothers walked away alive.” Using context clues like Pastra said, it would only make sense for Liu to be the survivor. Every time Jeff tries to kill his family, he tries to kill everyone AND himself, so if he were to have killed Liu, he would have killed himself after, therefore he couldn’t have “walked away alive.”

I tend to specifically remember the line during Liu's chapter where he recalls Jeff having him pinned and Jeff specifically says, "When you next wake up, WE'RE going to see Mom and Dad again." Jeff was always planning to die once he was finished with his family, so why would he have walked away at the end if he was the one that had survived and killed Liu?

I think Liu was the winner. Jeff was very, VERY self-destructive in your rewrite, like full-on Andross maneuver self-destructive and would likely have taken his own life within the building if he ended Liu's, plus Jeff being in a panic due to Liu actually having prepared would make him far more reckless then he already probably is. Also the idea of a Pastra take on Homicidal Liu that acts as a slasher sequel in a similar vain to Friday the 13th is one i personally find funny.

Creepypastas were so big back then that I remember at school with friends we created the story of The Skeleton. At first it was only that, the most basic thing. If you were alone at the school it was possible to see him and he could kill you. Then it evolved into different colored Skeletons. It was goofy, but we were young. Also, for school we filmed a horror movie called El Familiar (The Relative) which was basically a dude who owed money and couldn't payback, so the lender just picked up the phone and called 666 and sent an assassin, which eventually killed everyone at the house where we filmed. It's lost media now, sadly.

Pastra rewrite spoilers: No joke here, at the very ending of your video after the officers leave and Liu goes to bed only to realize that his window was left open (right after it was just shown just how meticulous and careful he was about keeping his home locked down at all times), I literally got chills down my spine and felt my blood run cold in an instant. I REALLY thought the story was gonna go back on to the officers or give a time skip or show the next victims POV or something, anything else, but the moment he said "the window's open" my sense of security was DECIMATED. And it really picked up because instead of dumb horror trope where the character disregards something like this as "Meh, I probably just forgot to close it earlier", Liu immediately starts to panic real hard and look for his knife

If there's one part of your adaptation that hits the hardest, it's absolutely the "evil all along" twist. While the reveal makes sense and I did begin to sense it coming, it's a credit to your writing which sells the dangerous, unstable nature of Jeff that most versions (especially the originals) don't convey well. The way Jeff is portrayed as extremely detached from humanity but with some narcissistic qualities and still being able to make mistakes makes the events feel plausible. On a similar note, the "oh crap" moment in Dreams of an Insomniac is done expertly as well, and I can't wait to see what other projects you work on, because few online projects have given me that unsettled feeling as well as these.

The whole legal process makes no goddamn sense. Cops don’t just pull up to homes, declare the sentencing, and take whoever says they did it. ESPECIALLY if the stories told are contradicting. Both Jeff and Lou would be taken, questioned, and detained until the investigation is complete. The bullies would be taken and questioned too, then the bus driver. Since Lou’s story wouldn’t line up with victim accounts, Jeff is the prime suspect. After that, cases are assembled and the trial happens. Jeff’s attorneys would tell him he could actually win the trial (Jeff admits in the story there’s very little evidence for either case), and maybe flip the narrative and prove the bullies started it. kids from around the neighborhood would be questioned on their experiences with the bullies, and Jeff would be proven not guilty on account of self defense.

Currently I'm a solid portion of the way through writing a story that reimagines Jeff entirely, switching things around so that Liu became a slasher villain instead and Jeff turned into a kind of creepypasta-edition Winchester brother. I like how Pastra used his own version of the Smile Dog image when talking about other iconic Creepypastas, because that’s meant to be their interpretation of what the ‘original’ image looks like, and it means we’re all cursed again. Also, I kinda relate with Pastra’s recounting of how they came across horror for the first time at the beginning, because with what I can remember, videos about Sonic.exe might have been my own first exposure to Creepypasta or horror in general as a kid, even if I (thankfully) haven’t read his original Creepypasta, and I remember consuming every bit of media of him I could find as a kid, and he might’ve even scared me a bit with how young I was. It was either him or FNAF, I can’t exactly remember. But I think what scared me the MOST Horror-wise was the Duck Season Dog. Thank you for coming to my TED talk

I seriously don't think they should have replaced the original. The idea that a single group of people on ONE website get to decide what in Creepypasta is "Canon" defeats the entire point of having these be urban legends. Hell, having the website PERIOD defeats the point of urban legends. Especially since now there is a precedent that the website can decide to rewrite YOUR creepypasta and you have to deal with it.
@seantaylor4243 ай бұрын
I don't know anything about Creepypastas beyond the idea they were supposed to be urban legends and their popularity kinda went in a different direction, but what you say makes sense. It's not like SCP, where it's just a collaborative story with an in-universe hierarchy to justify rewrites/redactions/etc, and they're certainly not like a comic or movie series that rely on building upon previous installments, so having ANYBODY in charge of what's supposed to be hushed whispers and rumors makes them...not hushed whispers and rumors. The writer in me gets the appeal of wanting to organize things and make them presentable, but these characters theoretically don't belong to anyone, so why have any rules at all?
@aaaaaaaaaaaaa-b6w3 ай бұрын
@@seantaylor424the point isn't to be rumors, they're meant to be well written stories made by people to share online Hell, most creepypastas nowadays have known writers so they arent 100% urban legends The meaning has changed over time

I completely agree that Jeff should be a monster, and your Jeff the Killer twist revealing it was perfectly foreshadowed with the "why was dad the only one who died" line. I'd love to see you do a rewrite of one of the stereotypical haunted video game creepypasta because of the world building and character development from your Jeff the Killer rewrite. Sonic.exe, Strangled Red, Ben Drowned type of stories.
@Ian-mw9wt3 ай бұрын
I would love for Pastra to tackle some video game pastas, but I honestly still consider Ben Drowned to be near-perfect to this day. It's incredibly well-written and the Majora's Mask gameplay adds so much to the story. It has a sort of Seinfeld Is Unfunny (TVTropes) thing where it only seems cliche in retrospect because it spawned so many of the tropes in the haunted video game subgenre. I would be interested in seeing what Pastra could do with it, but, honestly, unlike stories like Jeff the Killer or Sonic.EXE, a rewrite isn't really necessary to be frightening in a contemporary context. It still holds up.
@redtailarts1013 ай бұрын
Pastra, your version has GOT to be my favorite. You did him perfectly. Let me tell you why. The opening segment is a perfect set up. One of my personal greatest fears is an intruder in my house, killing me (I have genuine paranoid delusions from it) so the setup with Jeff having broken into the man's house and killing him, me knowing he's there but the protagonist deciding to sleep anyway, is a wonderful way to set up everything. It sets a terrifying tone, instantly chilling the listener and putting them on edge, and also sets up intrigue for the mystery. We don't get to even see the monster yet, but we instantly want to know the story behind the killer. The investigation sequence is pretty good - I loved the testimonies. They were pretty scary, and set up further intrigue about Jeff while giving hints about who he is and what he wants. They also padded out the story and made it long enough to feel like we get enough time investigating, to dwell on the mystery, and establish Jeff as an urban legend. Unfortunately because he's iconic, we already know it's Jeff, however what we don't know is what direction Pastra wants to take him, and the story is phenomenal in that regard. Admittedly, the cops come to the conclusion that it's Jeff a bit fast. It would have been better if they'd had a list of suspects, and had to rule them out, and while looking over the list, Norman(?) asks about Jeff and the older cop has to explain to him that Jeff was involved in a cold case. Norm could then read it and say he thinks Jeff is their prime suspect. But that's not a major issue, I really don't mind and still adore the story. Liu's segment retelling the story is also great. I absolutely adore the new spin on Jeff's origin story. You do such a great job of setting Jeff up as if he's sympathetic, and then pulling the rug out from under us. It's great that when we're just starting to feel like we care about Jeff, as he's bonding with Liu, we get the plot twist that changes everything and makes Jeff so much scarier. He's always been a monster, he was planning a second fire, but he snapped and his impulsiveness led to him acting too quick and failing to kill Liu. It's all way too perfect. And you manage to find a way to make Jeff scary and have a personal motive: he's killing anyone who looks like Liu. Yet Liu has a basic enough appearance that the demographic of people that could get Jeff the Killed is pretty big - young looking men with brown hair are common. It's a good balance between "he's a serial killer going after strangers" and "he's trying to fulfill a personal goal" and it's brilliant. Jeff's own perspective also gives a reason for him to do this. He wanted the cops to lead him to Liu, he wanted them to realize his target was Liu, and they did just that. All the same he blames Liu. Liu won't just come out of hiding and let Jeff kill him, so he's at fault for Jeff killing all the fake Lius. But in the end, his sloppiness got him caught. His excitement causing it. His emotions stop him from being the perfect, methodical killer, and I think it's his ultimate failure. Liu himself is characterized very well. He's lived on edge, in fear of Jeff, never able to know peace because of Jeff. He sleeps in the day and stays up all night. He keeps a knife with him. Why he doesn't lock his windows I don't know. Perhaps he can't. His house is a mess and so is he. He's alert and perceptive and always paranoid. And I think that it saved his life. I also do like the end. I like that I could find evidence for either (though I think there's more indication that it's Liu) and I like that, while it's up for interpretation, observant listeners can find the true answer and feel like they do get a proper conclusion. Great video and great story and I really look forward to a possible read-through of every entry for Jeff the Killer's 2015 rewrites, except the #2 spot for obvious reasons

I feel the need to comment this here because it genuenly cannot be overstated: Your version of Jeff the Killer is (imo) The Best version there is. There's a lot of reasons I can list for that, most of which have already been said in the comments of that video; the well thought-out writing, the build-up leading to a genuenly satisfying payoff, the framing of the story etc. Outside of being a great JtK retelling it's also just a great story, which is something almost no other rewrite manages. My main reason for putting your retelling at nr1 out of any other iteration of Jeffery Woods is that it FEELS like a creepypasta. The building of finsding out more about Jeff through different witnesses, all accounts differing in their details; it perfectly captures what Hearing the actual creepypasta felt like as a kid. You hear different versions of his story, the only thing that /truly/ connects them all is his face and his kills, and you're certain that when you wake up at night that face will be staring at you from somewhere outside - or inside - your house. The ending is literally all of those fears realised, with Jeff hiding in his brothers closet. With Lou being our latest POV it almost feels like he's attacking us after chapters of buildup. It's the realisation of my worst fears during those first few weeks after I first heard of JtK and it's BRILLIANT. None of the widely recognised Jeff the Killer stories are actually scary, even the picture feels kinda goofy when you're no longer 12 years old, but the idea - the legend - of this man Was scary. Knowing that he might exist, having seen his face, THAT was scary. When I was a kid I hadn't read any of the actual written-down JtK stories, he was just a story passed around on the playground, a picture of a face to look out for before I went to bed, and it terrified me. The more I learnt about Jeff the Killer over the years, the more stories I read and the more I looked at that dumb picture, the less scared I was of him. Until your video. Your rewrite scared me in a way no version of the story has since I first saw his face. /That/ is why your version will forever be my favorite and the (imo) best one. Thank you for coming to my Tedtalk (and for being an amazing artist, writer, storyteller and most of all; making me care about this story again.) :)

Pastra basically said this in the video, but as much as people say that old creepypasta's like Jeff the killer are bad, you can't deny that they had a huge influence on horror. Like yeah, looking back at them some of them are pretty bad, but I'm also a firm believer that those old stories aren't scary to us anymore, because our concept of what qualifies as scary has changed over time. Like you wouldn't be scared if you watched the original Dracula movie, right? Yeah, but at the time it was made, it was terrifying and influential. And I feel like that logic very well applies to creepypastas. We aren't afraid of them now, but we were in the past. Anyways, there's a lot more things I would want to comment on, but this is already a long speech, so I'll just say big shoutout to all the editors who worked on this, because I loved the editing in this video. Now this makes me kind of want to see how Pastra would reimagine the Scarecrow, since they have been known to like the character a lot, and I do too. But only if they want to of course. Anyways I'm done for real this time.

When it comes to the ending of your rendition of Jeff the killer :Spoiler: I personally believe it was Liu who survived. With everything presented to us in the story, I can't see Jeff being the one who survived and walking away. He burned his family home to the ground to kill his family, himself included, and failed to do so, because of this he kept on going so he could finish the job someday. I believe that if Jeff killed Liu, it wouldn't make much sense for him to walk away. I feel he would just die there with Liu, finally finishing what he started all those years ago. Liu being the one to survive makes more sense to me because of how everything is presented to us through Jeff's chapter, his only reason to continue living was to finally kill the last remaining member of his family that he failed to kill twice now, the only remaining proof of his failure. This is only my personal interpretation of the ending, and I would LOVE if others would share their interpretations of it as well.
