I've been sewing over pins for 40 years :D never broke a single needle - lol! Both my grandmother and a professionally trained sewing instructor had me sew over pins ;) It's no big deal, the sky won't fall!

To skip the trouble you had with the bulky tapered end getting caught in the feed dogs at the start of sewing the coils, simply turn the tapered end toward you before inserting under the presser foot and sew, starting it at about five or six inches above that pesky tapered end, and sew toward the tapered end. The fabric will not fight you, then. Secure with backstitches, cut threads, turn project around, and then start sewing at the place you started your stitches, but going in the opposite (originally intended) direction.

Great video and it saved me from making this rug as a gift. the rugs will always be washed and non-sewing people will not know to iron the rug within an inch of it's life to make it flat again. for the life of me i don't know why the pattern maker didn't make this rug with bias strips. i don't want to give out gifts to people that become an ironing chore every couple of weeks after washing the rugs - that is not the kind of gift that keeps giving i wish to give.

If i came across this info i would of cut fabric on the bias😭 mines a gift if she washes who knows what will happen. Ironing never helped me so had to redo...not a good rug

WOW! Your rug looks amazing! I love how yours turned out . I’m going to do one oval and one rectangular, at the very least. I think my little dachshund, Domino, will love lying on this new rug in the sun this winter! You gave me so much encouragement and self confidence for this project. I’d like to see how yours looks after a wash. I’d like to send you pictures of mine, before and after washing. Instructions say to put rug into a mesh laundry bag for machine washing. Did you find this to be necessary or better? I was thinking that I could maybe just use a gentle wash cycle to prevent rug fraying or unraveling. What do you think? Your opinion matters to me. Merci beaucoup!

This was a great tutorial. I've had a bit of trouble getting around the 1st couple corners, but I think I've got it now. Others have asked for the music to be left off....I however would like the gloves to be left off. It's really hard to see what you're doing with that big ol' glove right in the way of the needle and fabric. Just FYI for others re: the batting....I cut my own strips bc I had to stop every 150 clips anyway to roll more. So butting batting together was not a problem for me...plus I have a very large stash of batting and it saved me a lot of money.

Just noticed, it seems like you are doing a bit of “pulling” on the strips as you’re sewing. Wonder if there was less pulling, especially on the ends, maybe it would curl less. Just a thought. Awesome tutorial.........except for the music. I am inspired. Thank you.

You are such a great, clear teacher. Thank you for all the support! That Bosal batting by Katahdin is fantastic. I’ll be using it mor and more. What is your shop and your shop address, so I can give you business and browse your shop. Thanks. The prewinding bobbin recommendation is so important, so you have all 4 or 5 full bobbins all full. Would you recommend using polyester thread as opposed to cotton for additional strength when sewing the rug together? I’d like your opinion.

Hi - Thank you so much for the great tutorial! A friend got me the pattern and said to be sure and watch this first, and it's really helped out. One suggestion - maybe consider no background music next time? (especially a tune that repeats the same 16 notes endlessly). Your video was great; a lot of good information and easy to follow!. I do have the pattern but haven't tried it yet. You said something interesting about the Jelly Roll strips being cut on the straight of grain vs. the bias. I plan to cut strips from my stash so I wonder if I cut them on the bias if the rug would lay flatter. What do you think?

Quilt addicts Anonymous: Check your video. If that is an acoustic guitar I'll put gravy on my rug and eat it, the music sounds more like Schroeder's piano. No offense intended as I'm sure none was intended by you. PS. My husband performs as an acoustic guitarist.

How do the rugs hold up? Can you wash them? The locker hooked rugs I've made are 10 years old and been washed15 to 20 times. They are still beautiful. This technique is so much faster but also much more expensive. Can't wait to give it a try.
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous

They can be washed, but you have to press it down when it comes out of the machine. I have mine near the entrance of the shop, and it is walked on A LOT and it is still looking good.

If cutting your own strips would it be better to cut on the bias to avoid some of the bowing you experienced?

I don’t think it would make a difference because the batting will still have trouble curving.

I had to laugh when I came to comment bc I was thinking the same as Joy did, I've watched a few others explain and do this, however I found your showing and tips to be very well expressed. Thanks, I will make at least two of these as I ordered 3 units of pre cut batting since I definitely would rather not have the extra batting piece in my stash. lol what a deal. Anyway thanks again for showing so many great ideas for stitching and pressing as you go along. BTW just how many bobbins should we start with ??? lol really I never start a quilt top without at least two bobbins but this is an extreme case of bobbin thread did you find that to be the case? thanks again keep up the great fun stuff for us.
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous

I am glad you found it helpful! I would start with three or four bobbins. You need a lot of thread for this one.

You could have had more of a curve going down the center or eased in fabric as you went.

Can you use cotton clothesline rather than batting? Is that a walking foot? Thank you for the great tutorial!
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous 5 жыл бұрын
That is a walking foot and clothesline would be much harder to sew with, would be thicker and you would have to wrap the fabric around differently, but people have done it.

Danielle Graziani Stone , I saw in another video that exact solution, you have to help it ease around the curves or it will start to curl up.

We have a whole video on this, but the short answer is if your rug has problems before you wash it, it will have problems after you wash it.
