Looks great. I haven’t tried the round, oval OR this one. Hoping to try at least one. Incidentally, most say "official" video.....The Homeschooler, and a couple others I watched. Love them all. I find that I learn so much better with videos, rather than photos. Thank you for taking the time to video....and clearly explain it all! You have a gift of colour arranging! Both of your rugs are awesome!

I bought this pattern by mistake. I was upset at first because of the no exchange thing .(understandable). I wanted oval.....I thought. I read through it a few times, and it just wouldn't click. I have a broken brain LOL. Your video pulls it together for me . This version actually suits my purpose better . I will buy the oval eventually, of course....but have all my goodies ready to go. My senior furbabies need a bit more than a blankie these days . Using this next to my chair will help so much :) Seems like a perfect way to spend a cold rainy day while listening to an audio book. Thank you for an easy to understand tutorial.

This is beautiful but, I remember sitting with my grandmother taking 3 strips of fabric, left over from making a dress, shirt, or quilt, and braiding them by hand then adding another scrap as you go. After using up her scraps she would then use a darning needle with a heavy thread to bring them together into a rectangle, a circle, or oblong shapes. I was only 6 or 7 years of age it was much easier than this. It was perfect for a young girl like me who had immediate success.

yer and the way your grandma was doing was actually the right way, well...... real jelly roll rug, I shouldn't say the right way as there really is no right or wrong way to be creative but maybe the naming of it should have been a bit more thoughtful to all of us that did actually sit with our gran's making the real thing, The Modern Jelly tack Rug, they could call it, I dunno, I'm rambling now. They are nice rugs though.

I want to make a custom rug for my bathroom - my proposed dimensions are 2.5' by 5'. How many 2.5 x 44 strips do I need? Thank you!
@erin8575
@erin8575 4 жыл бұрын
The way I figure, about 124 strips. I depends on what kind of design you're doing, but I did some rough math assuming you're doing straight lines like this pattern. Each strip of fabric is going to be about 1/2 inch wide finished. (That's an estimate, some might end up wider or narrower and it depends on the thickness of your batting.) 5' = 60" = 120 half-inch finished strips sewn together. Your rug would be 44" wide, so you would need to trim that down to 30" (2.5') but that doesn't mean you need fewer strips. Plus 4 more for the binding (the rug will be longer than 44" so you need 2 for each side) = 124 total. I would plan on cutting more just in case your strips aren't exactly 1/2 inch finished. If you want the stripes to run the other way (lengthwise), 44" is less than 5' so you would need to sew two strips end-to-end for each row. Now you need 60 extra long half-inch wide strips to make it 30" wide (2.5'.) 60 extra long strips made up of two 44" strips sewn together is 120 strips. So you need 120 either way. This way you only need 2 for the binding, so your total would be 122.

I use the recommended batting and I begin my folds to the middle then that in 1/2. It seems like the batting grows and goes beyond the fabric so I don't get a easy fold in half. I should be able to breeze through the rectangular rug. Any ideas on how I should correct this? It makes getting a uniform strip tough and getting good double edges joined properly.
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous

Stitch closer to the edge instead of the middle if you are having trouble with the batting poking out the sides.

WOW! Your rug looks amazing! I love how yours turned out . I’m going to do one oval and one rectangular, at the very least. I think my little dachshund, Domino, will love lying on this new rug in the sun this winter! You gave me so much encouragement and self confidence for this project. I’d like to see how yours looks after a wash. I’d like to send you pictures of mine, before and after washing. Instructions say to put rug into a mesh laundry bag for machine washing. Did you find this to be necessary or better? I was thinking that I could maybe just use a gentle wash cycle to prevent rug fraying or unraveling. What do you think? Your opinion matters to me. Merci beaucoup!

Do you have to use a walking foot?
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you need a walking foot anytime you are sewing three or more layers together so the fabric moves at the same rate. Otherwise the top will drag and it will get stretched out.

Help! My rug curved at the ends and no amount of pressing made them go straight. What did I do wrong, and how can I fix it?
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous 4 жыл бұрын
You have to fix it when the strips are in sets of two as I showed on the video. Once it is all together, there is no way to fix it unless you take it all apart

Pity theses patterns are not available in PDF form because it would cost me $34 just for postage for a pattern! Way too expensive.

I was excited to try this jelly roll rug until you explained that if I didn't have a more expensive machine that it may not turn out right. Guess I'll skip the rug and make some more placemats.

Hi Diane, saw your post and had to respond. I made my first jelly roll rug recently on a Brother - it was 150 dollar machine on Amazon. I used a denim sewing needle since there are parts where the thread has to go through multiple layers of batting and fabric. My machine did just fine. Don't know what you're using but I wouldn't hesitate to try this project.
