This is beautiful but, I remember sitting with my grandmother taking 3 strips of fabric, left over from making a dress, shirt, or quilt, and braiding them by hand then adding another scrap as you go. After using up her scraps she would then use a darning needle with a heavy thread to bring them together into a rectangle, a circle, or oblong shapes. I was only 6 or 7 years of age it was much easier than this. It was perfect for a young girl like me who had immediate success.

I want to make a custom rug for my bathroom - my proposed dimensions are 2.5' by 5'. How many 2.5 x 44 strips do I need? Thank you!
@erin85754 жыл бұрын
The way I figure, about 124 strips. I depends on what kind of design you're doing, but I did some rough math assuming you're doing straight lines like this pattern. Each strip of fabric is going to be about 1/2 inch wide finished. (That's an estimate, some might end up wider or narrower and it depends on the thickness of your batting.) 5' = 60" = 120 half-inch finished strips sewn together. Your rug would be 44" wide, so you would need to trim that down to 30" (2.5') but that doesn't mean you need fewer strips. Plus 4 more for the binding (the rug will be longer than 44" so you need 2 for each side) = 124 total. I would plan on cutting more just in case your strips aren't exactly 1/2 inch finished. If you want the stripes to run the other way (lengthwise), 44" is less than 5' so you would need to sew two strips end-to-end for each row. Now you need 60 extra long half-inch wide strips to make it 30" wide (2.5'.) 60 extra long strips made up of two 44" strips sewn together is 120 strips. So you need 120 either way. This way you only need 2 for the binding, so your total would be 122.

I use the recommended batting and I begin my folds to the middle then that in 1/2. It seems like the batting grows and goes beyond the fabric so I don't get a easy fold in half. I should be able to breeze through the rectangular rug. Any ideas on how I should correct this? It makes getting a uniform strip tough and getting good double edges joined properly.
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous4 жыл бұрын
Stitch closer to the edge instead of the middle if you are having trouble with the batting poking out the sides.
