Ever since we saw it at Computex, we knew the Corsair Crystal Series 280X needed to be reviewed. it is minimalist, looks great and has an interesting dual chamber design. But is this matx gaming case any good!

Thank you! I've been sporting the PC-D8000 for the last couple of years, which is HUGE (holds 20x3.5" and 6x5.25"), but it's time to get something smaller, which is more LAN friendly. The big one isn't going into retirement though, it'll be converted to a huge ass NAS server at some point. I did some cable management in it a couple of months back, which is an almost impossible task in this, but I'm kinda happy about it. All of this hardware is going into the Dynamic.

Case reviews are what made this channel. It's how I first found them back in the day (when there was an actual Canuck narrating. Sorry, I forget his name!). They were straight to the point and well produced and that's only gotten better and better as time has gone on. Dimitri and Eber took things to a whole other level too. It gets better and better!

Man I wanted the dynamic so much but its all sold out and backordered so I went with this and ITX board, the same ASUS Z370-I he reviewed a bit ago. So its sorta a mini dynmaic lol. Also it seems I can modify this case a bit to extend the top glass with some spacers. And same with the bottom feet maybe? So I can have bottom intake fans.

I don't understand the love affair with tempered glass. Sure, it's fine for the "display" side of the case to show off hardware. What I don't understand is/are cases that have it on the front and top where fans are? (Some cases even have it on the back side panel where all the cables are supposed to be hiding, and I don't get that at all unless you are a cable management god and can make that area look presentable lol). It blocks airflow, as clearly shown in this video, and just looks stupid in those locations IMO. Anywhere a fan is mounted should have mesh and not a solid piece of glass. Maybe I'm just old school.

Same, it's impractical with how they implement it. I've never been a fan of side windows anyway so this trend is extra annoying all around for me. It's almost as annoying as the RGB ALL THE THINGS trend too. Combine the two and you have a much harder time of finding cases that are well engineered internally with all the modern stuff we've come to expect if you're not a fan of such things but also want something current.
@DoomWalker42
@DoomWalker42 6 жыл бұрын
Sadly tempered glass has become a new industry standard. People have forgotten that airflow and silence are more important instead aesthetics hence the separation from cases side panels that have mesh filters and so on.

Cable management isn't a problem. I just think side windows look tacky as shit. I'm not a fan of the "gamer" aesthetic and prefer something simple that does its job well and gets out of the way both physically and visually. The important stuff is happening on screen, not competing for attention with all the fucking RGB bullshit light show going on inside the case. The same is true of things like mice and keyboards too. It's hard to find good quality ones that also don't have RGB crap all over them or the "gamer" look again. I turn all that crap off. I have a Corsair K70 Lux RGB and only use a single solid colour for all keys. White. With a red escape key. The only reason I got this was because it was the least tacky looking good quality mechanical "gaming" keyboard that's actually solidly built. Finding such a keyboard without all the RGB guff is pretty hard if not impossible. It's like trying to find a modern good quality well built TV that doesn't have "Smart" TV stuff built in, that sucks major ass no matter who makes it and how much the set costs and it'll never get updates beyond a year or so. I just want something with a great panel, well built with a bunch of HDMI inputs. I'll add the smart functionality myself.

I wish case manufacturers would learn from Silverstone. The SG09 and SG10 are still the smallest micro atx cases on the market, can fit a Noctua NH-D15 or 120mm aio, and have the best cooling performance for something that size. Not to mention those cases were released at least 5 years ago. All I ever see from other case manufacturers are larger and larger matx and mini itx cases with less airflow. They seem to have no recollection of how to use space efficiently anymore.

Really appreciate the new dual-chamber layout. It's hard to tell if this becomes a trend, but putting the psu on the back of case seems to open some really nice possibilities for the airflow in the main chamber and it's unfortunate, that it is yet some steps away from being really good. It comes to personal prefenrence, but to me it seems like fitting in your interior something, that resembles a cube could be easier, then traditional slim cases with 40-50cm height. Regarding the case, it seems like we are not there yet: both bottom and front intake are not being utilized properly and the considering its price the case looses part of its attractiveness. Let's hope, that this case will be just an intermediate step on the way to good dual-chamber designs. And, as always, that you for the best case reviews on youtube!

It all depends of one's context : having more height than width has a lesser footprint on the working surface or whatever stand (it doesn't require a large area even though it can have more depth if one needs a casing for accommodating many drives)

5:40 It's because the front panel and dust filter make it harder for air to come in through the front, but because there is still the air pressure from the fans, air comes in through the path of least resistance, in this *case*, the bottom ventilation - directly supplying fresh air to the graphics card.
@StephenRiss
@StephenRiss 6 жыл бұрын
Love the idea of this case, but it needs a exhaust fan out the back. The top and front glass need tube mesh to allow for better airflow in a smaller form factor and the side panel needs to be on their hinge system with magnetic front so as to not have to screw anything on or off. Corsair you do that and I'd buy this case in a heart beat.

Hey Dimitry I was considering purchasing this and stumbled upon a Rosewill Cullinan Px. The two cases are identical with a few slight differences. The Rosewill case has support for ATX motherboards, no glass top, no front filter, only one hard drive cage, rubber isn’t built into the glass it’s on the stand offs which fall off easily. It has less rubber grommets for cable management. Overall I’m pretty happy with it. Not a perfect case but there aren’t too many cases that are perfect.

I prefer the regular Define models over the Meshify. Define is best of both world front panel on it's a silent case, Front panel off it cools better than Meshify. Define front filter is much easier to clean, and I am lazy. Very subjective, but I prefer the looks of the Define. So no contest for me, I prefer the Define series over the Meshify series.

When the upper and front glass are installed, the airflow through these two directions is reduced, which causes more airflow to be drawn in by the graphics card through the lower air intake.

I have this case and it was a slight upgrade from my previous Corsair Air 240 that was needed when I upgraded my graphics card that happened to be too wide for the 240 case. I agree with your plus and negative points about this case with the side glass panel being one of the biggest gripes followed by the other glass panels lack of clearance. For anyone running high OC's and a system that produces a lot of heat, I wouldn't recommend this case. I removed the top dust screen and added additional 120mm fans to help with the thermal issues that plague this case design. Great review and awesome channel. Thanks!
@OGJakob
@OGJakob 6 жыл бұрын
About the GPU temp issue : the fans will always apply the same pressure inside the case whichever the situation of the front panel is. So if the case has the same negative pressure inside, and the air flow is more blocked from the front then the air is more likely to come from the bottom of the case too. And since the GPU is in the bottom of the case it benefits the added volume of fresh air coming from below.
@storybookbus0314

The airflow may be better with the front on because it basically channels the air, kind of like a rifle on a sniper; it just makes it more accurate and direct, rather than coming from all over the place

Extra intake when the front panels and top dust are removed invokes positive pressure inside the case, this might make it hard for the graphics card to intake from the bottom of the case since it has to fight all the air trying to escape via the bottom. Putting the restrictions on the front intake promotes a more neutral pressure situation, allowing the GPU to intake without as much resistance.

The use of the term compact can be misleading because people would think this form factor can fit more stuff for a lower volume. But the truth is that this case is a whole 40 Liters, 33% bigger than a Thermaltake H18 or 63% bigger than a In win 301.

GPU is likely cooler with the stock configuration because the choking of air coming in the front means the exhaust fans have to pull more air in from the bottom, taking that right by the GPU.

The top fan filter is for Positive Pressure setups, I had issues with dust in a 350D(all the seems), so I picked up the Decimflex filter set and did 2 120mm in front and top set as Inlet with the back fan as exhaust, dust problem gone and the GPU ran cooler. Patrick PTMonk oh shit I saw that in Computex 2018. I wonder how is it in airflow.

They did mention in a previous video at 2018 Computex that the airflow improved by 3 times in the front panel (Intake)and 5 times the airflow at the top(Exhaust).

I love the 2 chamber design and the complete glass thing I think it would be awesome if the Corsiar logo in the front would be RGB too.

as a certified cube case addict (and mATX lover) I could not pass this one up.....the case was REALLY easy to build in. The only real complaint I have with it is no pegs for the side panel and the little swingout door they used for holding the PCI cards in was a PITA to get shut. FYI corsair included every screw you could have wanted with this case....literally six sets of fan screws, a set of hex head screws for the TG, long screws to mount a radiator with, hard drive screws.

for 200 € i expect full aluminuim chassic, not plastic. i get a jonsbo v9 for 60$, and it's 100% aluminium mATX, with a tempered glass panel.

I forget which video it was, but I remember him complaining about another case NOT having a dust filter for the top fans. Now he's ragging it for it's inclusion. personally I like having it to keep dust out when the system is off.

Corsair need to stop "Screwing" around! -Redesign the Tempered Glass Panels to Open Swivel like the > Phanteks Evolv mATX! -Removable front Glass option to replace it with Mesh for better airflow. -Option to raise the Top Glass Panel for better airflow.

Thanks for this review, I built a GPU rendering computer based off this review, and it only has a 10% dip in performance compared to my full tower setup. But it takes half the space and space is super limited at my office.

Can you do some vids on full ATX cube cases? There don't seem to be many on the market which is a shame because I really like them

So it seems like this case, if being used is more for aesthetics and really lacks airflow? I thought it was best of both worlds, but now it seems that it's better suited for water cooling radiators and not air cooling. That's too bad, it looks incredible

mATX cases like this is great but I think it would also be nice if they make an ATX version of this one. We share the same sentiments when it comes to the non-existing fan slot at the back and the clearance issue of the bottom part of the case.

I'm hoping they're doing a ATX/e-ATX sized version, my favourite case is the Air 540 I've owned 3 now haha. Wouldn't mind a bigger one of these!

Id say most people place their pcs on their tables, and obviously if you dont have a very large table horizontal space is way more important than vertical
@ZensorGuy

My guess is the top dust filter is to avoid dust from getting inside while the PC is turned off.

It's a shame that my favourite feature of the Air 240 didn't carry over: being able to mount it on its side. I have strict space constraints governing where I can have my PC: 34cm wide, 45cm tall & 40cm deep. And because it sits on my left a traditional tower with a left side window is a waste. I've been using a Corsair 250D for the last 4 years and a few months back started looking at replacing it (it's a great little case if you want to use an H100i and a GPU with a blower - which I don't anymore). I looked at the Air 240 but ultimately ended up getting a Thermaltake Core V21 as it just ticked more boxes for me. Put me down as +1 for future mATX and ITX case coverage!

Why height over width? With all that glass that is a case to put on your desk, where in almost all applications there is plenty of nothing between the desk and the roof for a high case, but a wide one will take away useful space
