Today, I talk about the Ultimate Mistakes People make when they move to Thailand or live abroad. I moved to Thailand a few years back and had learned from my mistakes from my previous trip living abroad. Today, In Pattaya, I catch up with Sam ‪@GoneAdrift‬ and we talk about the mistakes he made and how he was able to overcome them. We start off with a little motorcycle tour of Pattaya before heading to the lovely Bamboo Beach in Pattaya to chat about the mistakes expats and digital nomads make when moving to Thailand.

I’m astonished at the amount of stories that come out about guys who come to Thailand and blow their wad of cash in so little time and seemingly lose all self control. For the “2-week millionaire” it’s probably not a big issue as long as he stops this behavior when he goes back to his home country and does not become some Thai lady’s sponsor. For those who want to stay in the hotspots of Southeast Asia long term, then this type of behavior becomes perilous. I think most of these men who come to Thailand do not have enough experience with women in general to understand female nature, spot the red flags and know how to control themselves. I think they come to Thailand broken and to escape something. Maybe they’re trying to run from politics, a failed relationship or they have had little to no success dating women in their own country. So they come to Thailand, Philippines, etc., looking for love, attention, and to get fixed and they end up falling victim to a local woman and the lifestyle and get taken for everything they have. It’s tragic. If you’re a broken guy, Southeast Asia will not fix you. You have to do that yourself.

I would say the vast majority of western men moving to Thailand is to escape western women and the stifling gynocentric culture, out-of-control hypergamy and altogether failed dating system.

I'm so glad that the ~2 months I spent in Phuket, I didn't partake in the "nightlife". I dated two women, both from Phattalung: one worked in a 5-star hotel and the other a burger joint. Both tended to enjoy fairly simple dates like going to temples and parks. They still had flaws but being hooked on partying wasn't one of them, thankfully. (I also don't drink alcohol, so that helps.)

wahey! good to see sammy again, gotta head down in the next couple of weeks and catch up. Ive made all those mistakes in the past, but this time, I spaced life out. Routine is still an issue but one im actively working on. Biggest problem is my money mentality. Just because I CAN afford it, doesnt mean I should. I blew through 3 months of my backup money in the last month between here and Melbourne (tens of thousands) when I could have done things cheaper and more efficiently. Now, like sam, i have to make it back up. Like I keep saying though, theres very little in life that you cant bounce back from. Mistakes can lead to growth. Great vid, Adam!

@@parnpichate Ok, here are at few in no particular order. 1. Thailand is a “third world country”, nothing can be farther from the truth. 2. Thailands economic systems are inferior to most western nations capitalism-based economies. 3. Thai people will understand English (or your countries language. Many do, but a lot don’t. Learn a few words in Thai before you travel there or at least learn how to use Google Translate. 4. Don’t base your opinion on Thai women based on KZbin videos of Bangkok or Pattaya. 5. Do not underestimate the intelligence of the Thai people, many are better educated than most of us. 6. Do not, ever, underestimate or disrespect a Thai person causing a Thai person to “lose face”, you Might get you ass kicked. There’s a lot more, but generally do not go to Thailand with expectations and keep your mind open to learning more about Thai society.

A mate and I usually go out for a long ride on Saturdays along the coast and find some random place to have lunch and beers.Sam - yes you need to be 67 to access a government pension but super is different - I could access mine from 57 years - its called transition to retirement with the idea that you work less days, pay off your debts or put money into your mortgage. Some sound advice here and what a lovely place to have lunch!

I'm not sure if you mentioned in other videos but my biggest mistake was having my card cloned. BKK suhkemvit soi 7 park hotel. Checking out, got tapped on the back from someone asking if I wanted a taxi, as I turned around the guy had swiped my card on a reader. Strangely enough around 3 week later the copied card was being used in Australia. (I'm in England) before that I was naive and put my cards in a safety box in hotel reception. At night they rifle through these boxes cloning cards, dipping in customer cash etc. Maybe you have mentioned these issues in other videos but if not, please warn folks.

Was thinking the comments would be interesting. If you are planning to retire in Thailand you probably need to have done the party thing and got it out of your system and do something more laid back and cheaper when you retire. I have had a 30 odd year relationship with Thailand and have done the party thing and such, had a condo in Bangkok for 10 years or so and now live up country in a village in the NE where I am pretty happy. Great thing about Thailand is there is so much to do and so many places you can visit so when I need a break from country life we jump in the pickup and go have a trip or just fly somewhere like Vietnam, etc. But make sure you are setup financially before you retire!

I mean you probably could have lived off your savings. Rent a place, food, gym membership and transportation for less than 1k a month. The rest is for entertainment, and you still won't have to spend more than 20 k annually. If your savings is giving you 3 to 5% you can coast to 55. If you're going crazy it's just cuz you haven't lived like this before, but now it's outta your system.

I'd love to live and work out there. I'm a DJ with a tonne of experience but from what I've heard, not only would I take a massive hit on fees compared to what I can earn here, but a DJ is classed as an adult entertainer and visas are tough to get, unless you're a big name international DJ - which I'm not. I usually work 2 evenings per week which pays all my bills and gives me a good standard of living. I think if I were to move out there and try the same, I'd be working double the hours per gig, and I'd be expected to work 6 or 7 nights per week. Not really my idea of a nice life in my early 50's.

Here in Canada, you can access your taxable government-registered employment pension as early as 60, and a tax-free "Old Age Security" payment (fixed for everyone at around 19000BHT) at age 65. Both are payable anywhere in the world, but the Canadian government will claw back up to 25% of it if you live overseas and have other sizable income.

Great video guys. And awesome that Sam has found a job. Is he a bar manager or something? Because most work in the bars isn't for foreigners, right? Personally, that job wouldn't;t be for me, way too many temptations haha

In 2022 I decided to live in Bangkok for a month in order to see if I could potentially see myself living abroad. I was easily able to live within a certain budget (even coming home with unspent money) but I did that by avoiding the tourist hotspots, bar scene and living more like a local vs expat. I enjoyed the night markets, took regular trips to the local grocery store (even though I didn't cook much) and predominantly used the MRT/BTS and my own feet to navigate the city. As you become wiser you learn that being drunk is a waste of time and money and you typically won't meet quality people. I'd much rather enjoy coffee or tea and a stimulating conversation over loud music and people overindulging in other things. The key takeaway is do you value short expendable friends/relationships or people that will be with you for a long time to come.

I agree. Bars, heavy drinking, smoking pot, gambling and paying for female companionship are probably the quickest routes to financial ruin anywhere -- not just the Far East.
