But how efficient would it be? Part of overlanding is going out well away from infrastructure like gas stations, and you can only carry so much fuel with you before it just adds too much weight to be worth the effort. That's why they were going for a diesel. I'm guessing there will be a part of the OnX Challenge that stresses fuel efficiency...

@@AndrewAMartin They get way better mpg than v8's when set up right and almost have the torque of a 454.
@AndrewAMartin6 ай бұрын
@@jeffvw1994 I'm sure the Jeep purists would insist that the 4.0 liter I-6 is better, and is the appropriate motor for the build, but they don't get great mileage. They're torque-y too, but maybe not enough horsepower for the build. We'll have to wait and see what they come up with...

@@AndrewAMartin People use the 300i6 in dragsters, all kinds of ways to build them.
@dhrracer6 ай бұрын
@@AndrewAMartin Diesel is a bad idea. You mention well away from infrastructure, and you can only carry so much. The problem with diesel is that it is becoming less and less common to find. Even world travelers recommend gas. Plus, diesel engines just add a ton of weight. The best choice is gas and something that is very common worldwide and very easy to work on. Besides this build most likely will rarely get used after the challenge. Budget wise why not just stick with what was already in it.

Pro tip: After you level the frame and center the rear axle, Take a couple of scrap pieces of angle and tack the axle to the frame at ride height. That way any follow on measurements of your links and mounts will be spot on square to the axle and frame. Once all the mounts are tacked in place and links are fitted, simply remove the temp angle braces.

While watching the frame cutting segment, I realized how much Hunter adds to this channel as cameraman. He’s the best of anybody doing it because he asks the same questions that us viewers are wondering while watching. I really love that about this channel. Some channels the cameraman never says anything, which is fine, but I really enjoy what Hunter adds to the videos when recording by helping clarify what’s going on. He’s almost like the director of the set sometimes by getting the guys to talk about what they’re doing instead of just doing it. Whatever you guys are paying him, it’s not enough cause he’s great at it and he takes so much initiative to do the job better than he even has to. He’s also great with the younger kids when they’re around and you can tell they look up to him. You couldn’t find a better employee if you tried and you hit the lottery when he came to the shop.

After doing a bunch of research, I found a structural engineer talking about this very thing, a straight cut is every bit as strong & simpler. Adding a fish plate over it would be added security against cracking but I'm in the same camp as you & Chad, boxing the inside or adding another plate offers added Pease of mind. Overkill beats fixing it twice.

Frame repair. Look at the section of the frame channel. Stresses are the greatest at the flanges: compression on the top flange and tension on the bottom flange. Zero in the center. The diamond repair looks great, but puts most on the strength in the center where it is not requires. I would weld 1/4" flat bar on the flanges. Of course, this is my opinion, and it is worth what you are paying for it. LOL

You might want to look into the Cadillac 500 engine as a potential crawling engine. It is only slightly heavier than a small block chevy, but has excellent, massive torque. Cad 500, MTS, Potters etc have parts from cams to pistons, alloy heads etc. I built a 9.5:1 with a stage 2 cam and EFI that was a real sweet deal. Edelbrock makes a mice dual plane intake too for that application.
