"True-to-size" is a confusing term for those who are new to running shoes. It'd be really helpful if you specify the measurements of your foot as a point of reference.

my "hack" is to look at the US size, I always take a US 13 which depending on the brand translates to a EU 47, 47.5 or 48. Works for me across Adidas, Nike, NB, Puma, Sauconey, Asics, Hoka, True Motion, On and Brooks.

I also always look at US size 10.5... For 1) adidas US 10.5 (Uk 10), nike US 10.5 (uk 9.5), New Balance US 10.5 (uk 10), etc...
@flatfootedrunner

Yep, same. US 10.5 is my consistent guide, whatever it translates to brand to brand.

Wouldn't it make most sense to look at the CM? On most shoes you have centimetres listed and it's an international standard so 27CM should always be exactly 27CM.

Ideally, yes (Japanese sizing) but in reality the inch EQUIVALENT is in between CM measurement. futhermore one divides in by 2, and the other by 3 😅

@@Kaisersozze length is just one factor, toe-room, width, heigth in the midfoot and fit of the heel also matter a lot. In many shoes I could get away with shorter sizes but my high midfoot forces me to go up, US 13 is just what I found to consistently work. In running shops they often offer one size down when they don't stock my size, I can hardly get them on. Even the same size and midsole may not fit depending on the upper, Takumi Sen 8 is too small, the 9 works fine.

Great topic to cover thank you Sir! Interesting to see the comments, it just shows everyone has different experiences. Make use of the returns periods with the likes of Start Fitness etc (plug intended) or if you can get into store to try shoes on and even use a treadmill even better! I’ve spent half a day walking around my house in one pair before keeping them! Thanks again!! Also great news hearing about the Leeds Rhinos partnership too 🎉

Thanks for the video Fordy. You obviously get through far more shoes than most of us, so some valuable information here across the brands. From my experience - I find Puma, Nike and Brooks are the best at being true to size. Mainly because they are consistent in the last that they use. I find that Adidas in particular (and Saucony to some extent) do change the lasts across different shoes and iterations of shoes and as a result - they vary in width, length and volume in the toebox.

I only go by CM sizing, it's the only sizing that's reliable across brands, otherwise they use different convention standards

Great video and VERY useful- especially when I haven’t tried all the brands but know what does work, thank you! The only difference I find to your review is ON shoes - I’m also a 9.5 usually, but I take a 10 in ON?? I also use the US sizes as a guide (as you know a 9.5 UK can be a US 10 or 10.5 depending on brand) or use the Japanese (actual length in cm) measurement- so I look for the 28.5cm (most brands that is 9.5 - but not ON, New Balance or HOKA - 28.5cm is Size 10 for them.

Very useful. Thanks, Chris. Any plans for one on toe boxes? Normally I've had to wear 2E width for a more forgiving toe box but now can magically wear a Boston 12 (Adidas have always felt way too tight). Pretty sure there are a heap of people out there that are missing out on some great shoes because they think the toe boxes will be too narrow.

Great video! Sizing is truly a mystery box if you order online. I have 1 pair of Nikes, 1 pair of Adidas and 2 Hokas. I've found that Hokas are true to size but I have to get them in Wide (2E). Nikes are all over the place (true to size or half up) and Adidas are half up for me. Very confusing!

Great Video. Think everyone has problems with size in running shoes with different brands. Mine. Adidas ultra boost pb. Size 9.5 tight across width of shoe. Asics Kayaño 29. Size 9.5very snug fit. ASICS Novablast size 10 plenty of space. ASICS nimbus 23 size 9.5 very comfortable great fit. 🙆

On Asics - I recently bought some Novablast 3s and they ran WAY too long for me, particularly in my right foot which is slightly shorter than the left. Felt 'okay' in the store walking around but within 40-50m of my first run it was horrible. Aches, blisters, the whole bit. Took them back and they were really understanding, even saying a lot of people do the same, and replaced them half a size lower. Kayanos, Trabuco Max 2s all sized normally fwiw.

Not related to sizing, but I noticed when you held up your Nimbus 25 that it looks like you're developing a small hole near the big toe on the right shoe. And... my Nimbus 25 is doing the exact same thing! I wonder if that's a common issue. Love the shoe and hoping it lasts another couple hundred km.

I buy shoes 275 mm length. Adidas in European sizes I am 42.7 but in all other 43. Asics Metaspeed 43.5 but Novablast 3 or Superblast 42.5. (no 43 in Asics.). Puma going but cm I am 42.5 and Mizuno by cm it's 42.5. Mizuno wave Rebellion Pro I went half a size up 280 mm. Fits amazing. Biggest issue for me is with New Balance. The SC Elite V3 is TTS. SC Trainer and 1080V12 is LONG and I have gone down half a size.

I think the issue is the length, they take shoe sizes from their and when a shoe is more pointy you can't use that length because your toes aren't pointy, when it's more boxy you can get a shoe that fits true to size, you'd think they'd figure this out.

My Brannock device measurement defines actual "true to size". Running shoes tend to run small - I have to order one full size larger than true size. This includes the ones you call "true to size" - they all fit well, needing one size larger than the Brannock device. Dress shoes usually fit true. For boots, I go with a half size smaller than true, meaning they run large. Your question "why can't they just make shoes true to size" applies to every running shoe company. They all make their shoes too small.
