The Ultimate SLEEPER? Volkswagen with a VOLVO engine! (The GolVo)

Sleepers just aren't something you see a ton of anymore so when we saw this GTI running 8's at Doorslammers in the UK we knew we had to go see what it was under the hood. We were very impressed by just how well put together this car was! With a Volvo motor and AWD conversion this thing can move!

That swap actually makes a lot of sense....and I own a 4 door mk4 chassis, a buddy of mine has a totaled 2005 Volvo S60 turbo (rear end hit) he said he would give me for free, I'm sure I can find a 4motion system at the junkyard. Add a haltech elite 2500 and bobs your uncle. I needed a new project so, that was absolutely PERFECT timing. Thanx boys!!! If you wanna feature it, I'm in Reno Nevada. I'm sure I'll be done in 14-15 months or so.

Sounds like a good project that is feasible to accomplish. Perhaps consider, examine, investigate a FuelTech [FT 450, 550, 600] compared to the HalTech - more advanced, complete, more options and seriously consider, examine, investigate especially adding a "Flex-Fuel" sensor, using high ethanol content fuel for racing especially. If You have the capability with comprehension, understanding also examine the video and components necessary for water injection which accomplishes oxygen boost for more power - see expert David Vizard - his video is listed as "octane boost" though within the explanation, details it is clearly, certainly oxygen boost. Also recall this owner stated the VW, Audi 5 cylinder was not yet available when he did this swap; that would certainly be more directly usable in the VW. There are other five cylinder options as the GM Vortec top. All the Best, Sincerely

Trust me, you'll want to buy a 4 motion MK4 chassis instead. They exist from the factory and aren't rare. The amount of work to make a proper 4WD conversion is ridiculous, when you can just buy it and just swap in an engine. I know because I own a Mk1 Leon (literally a mk4 golf) and looked into 4wd swapping it. Instead I ended up saving months of work by just buying a factory 4WD chassis.

You don't have to. I researched this years ago. Saving you the hassle. I have built a fully forged 1.8T MK1 Leon 4 motion. Converting the FWD chassis to 4WD is too much hassle when you can just buy a factory chassis instead. It makes little sense.

Totally right up my alley.. i would've killed for a car like this 10 or 15 years ago. the owner seems like a super cool dude, too... glad to see the car seems to be in good hands, and i'm glad he's really driving it and enjoying it, and kicking some ass on the track along the way. As someone who grew up in a Volvo family (albeit older RWD ones) I do love when the Volvo 5cyl engines get utilized, amazing build, looks so clean and even looks like a stock car on lowering springs, great sleeper build. ^^ Also, technically.. it could kinda sound like a VW, but it's the MK4 Golf that has the V5(VR5) option, they had the 2.3 10v (150hp) or 20v(170hp) as an option in the early 2000s VW in Germany, so you could get a 5cyl VW New Beetle technically, but only as FWD, you could however get the Bora/Jetta, Passat, and Golf with AWD and 5cyl engine, it's just as they changed their AWD system though, so I never remember if they're the last Syncro versions or first 4motion versions. He mentioned the Fiat 5cyl engine, and the obvious Audi one, but people forget that the US had a couple 5cyl cars we didn't get in Europe. Acura with the Vigor, either 2.0 or 2.5 5cyl engines, so G20A or G25A. And the giant ones, that were options in the Chevy Colorado and Hummer H3, the L52 which was 3.5 liter, and the LLR, which was 3.7 liter, I've never really found anything specific, but I've always wondered if those were just too big to swap into a smaller car

The mk4 Golfs were the first to switch to 4motion. The last syncro golf was the mk3 vr6 2.9 syncro :) A very rare car most people dont even know exists in the UK!!

The Volvo 5 cylinder is a great engine for swapping into other cars. I've seen some people even putting them in Nissan 240s keeping them rwd of course. Great motor for drifting too.

@@adamcarolan5884 I like to think of them as opposite of a Honda dohc. Very tall and built to develop loads of torque at low rpms. Probably because of the taller con rods. Where as Honda builds short engines designed to rev high and make max power at high rpms.

Ive never paid much attention to volvos in the past, but 5 years ago i purchased a 2000 volvo s70. Its only fwd and NA, but its so fun to drive. I could imagine the awd turbocharged models would be even more so! And very low maintenance on the mechanical side. Volvo gang for life!!!

What do you mean it’s hard to find sleepers? Their everywhere just look for the beadlocks,slicks,turbo out the hood,cage,parachute, Kirkey seat, but with factory paint or patina. That’s what everyone is calling a “sleeper” these days😂

​@@re5onance244ok, but the concept of "sleeper" is because you see the car stopped, and you can't understand that it has 950hp of power like this. definitely this apparently is a lowered golf with some rims, if you look inside, you can already suspect something, but even so it could very well be a 400hp car as there is nothing that identifies it as hoosier or mt tires, beadlocks, intercoolers or turbos on display, exhaust coming out of the hood and so on. walking, no sleeper is really a sleeper unless it's slow.

The volvo i5 sound more meaty, the Audi one is more raspy. Both great engines, the parts for the 2.2t from audi are really rare nowadays. Last year I wanted to buy a 2.2t for a audi 80swap, but the guy asked 4000$ for the engine only or 6000$ for everything (Gearbox, instalation, ecu ect.)

The Volvo 5 cylinder is an under rated engine. The drivetrain however, it was a good idea to go with the AWD drivetrain from VW. Volvo's transfer case, or angle gear we call, it is weak.
