I'm heavily invested in the Amazon ecosystem and during the recent Prime days the Blink doorbell and Sync Module 2 were less than $50 ($47.49 to be exact) together. I don't want to pay for cloud storage and already had a 64GB flash drive sitting around. To me, it's mostly just an upgrade of my doorbell from the 1990's. It may not have all the bells and whistles of the others but for under $50 I got a new doorbell with some video capabilities that easily works with all my other Amazon devices.
@utuber1000 Жыл бұрын
Exactly! Me too. IMHO the Blink camera system gets an undeserved bad rap by some new users because many purchasers have no prior experience or background in home automation, are apparently unaccustomed to reading instructions and throw them away with the box, have never in their lifetime googled to find answers to their problems, but instead go on user groups just to whine and complain; yes it is a limited low-end system but what it does it does well and has an excellent, well-organized and constantly updated support system online. And Alexa virtually doubles its usefulness with simple to create Routines but "Alexa? What's that?"

Nice job, Brian. I haven't seen anyone else do this comparison before. I bought one to try out even though I'm not going to replace my Ring as it integrates too well with my Ring security system. What I did do, though was mount it outside beside my garage door to see how it works as an inexpensive Homekit battery-operated outdoor camera. It's out in the open and facing due west so I'll see how long it lasts like that. The video is quite good, but it's been overcast and I just put it up.

I got it about a week ago when it first arrived at Amazon but waited a bit until I can get some clear analysis about it and if I didn't in the time needed before the return window closed, I would just continue to use the Ring doorbell. Really nice video. Unfortunately the battery life is not covered. Any findings on that for those cameras? A lot of people buy these so they have not to wire them.
@AutomateYourLife9 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, covering battery life is just about impossible. It's more about how accurate they are at deciding to record then it is anything else. That's because the drain is based on cameras running, recording, and transferring data. In general, all of these will last 3 months with moderate use. Less with more, and can last up to 6 months
@MindForgedManacle Жыл бұрын
Reolink's doorbell cam is also a good option, in my opinion, and they don't require you to stay with Reolink's devices and services thanks to their RTSP/ONVIF support and HA integrations. They also come in at $90 and $100 for the PoE and wifi versions respectively, so pricing is reasonable.

I don't know about the specifics there, but audio doesn't come through any wires with these doorbells. They just close a circuit to a chime in your home when rung. So if it's fairly standard you should be good. Check transformer ratings!

If Google had an option for local recording without the subscription it would be the best. I have the wired Nest 2nd gen without the subscription and it's great. The 3 hours is enough for me. I have 4K turret surveillance cameras for recording any motion onto my Synology NAS. Eufy with the homebase is also good but it's battery powered even when wired in during cold weather it stops charging and shuts down. The wired only version doesn't work with an existing chime and uses a plug in which is a deal breaker for me. All other doorbells just don't look professional to me. The Aqara and Ring look like they are from the 1990s.

Hi, great video. I just wanted to give my experience of my Google battery doorbell used over the UK winter when the weather is around 0 degrees. The doorbell has lasted a maximum of 8 days before needing to be charged, I spoke to Google several times and I'm currently on my third device, all with the same poor battery life in cold weather. I've decided to keep the recent version and accept whilst cold I'll need to charge weekly. It's a shame as it's perfect in every other aspect and as I'm renting I don't have the option to wire it.

One thing I never fully understood is why Video Doorbells need to be so expensive compared to 4k cameras, even the ones with 2 way audio. I do totally agree that it can be hard to choose. They all do the basics, detect movement, turn on a camera and two way audio, but there are so many other little things that get thrown in depending what brand you have. I still am reluctant to buy cameras that do not allow local storage. Megapixels don't matter at all, and most people in the CCTV industry will tell you that. A larger sensor with lower MP is better at grabbing light, so you get much higher quality low light and no light footage. I really would not touch Ring while they have that feature of sending footage to agencies without asking first.
@AutomateYourLife Жыл бұрын
You're not wrong about that dollar comparison at all. I think some of the tech gets a little more "commoditized" when we talk about cameras, but Doorbells just aren't there yet in terms of standard designs. Also I'm really glad you commented on the MPs and sensors. That's exactly where Google nailed their device in my eyes. Then they trained it well to do the different types of detection and you get a lot of good footage with what you want captured. :)

When our Nest Hello doorbell died we replaced it with the wired 2nd gen, because we like the integration with all our Google home hubs and hub max. But I hate it so much. The narrow field of view is terrible based on my house setup...I keep missing half the people that walk up or can't tell what they're doing with a package half the time if they place it somewhere off camera, which was never an issue with the first gen Hello. And the software in the Home app is abysmal compared to the Nest app. The motion notifications are worthless because it only give you a small initial snippet of the person just starting to walk toward the door, nothing else. Then if you actually tap on that motion notification it only shows you the first few seconds, then stops right before the person actually gets to the door. WTF! And you can't do a quick scrub in 10 seconds increments like you could in the Nest app, to just jump back and see what the person did. I don't understand how Google made almost everything worse with a 2nd gen product. I'm tempted to just switch back to another first gen Hello. I'd switch to another cam but I really want the full home hub integration. Ecosystem lock sucks sometimes ☹️
@AutomateYourLife Жыл бұрын
Hey Adam, so it totally sounds like Google's the wrong choice for your home. You know, the Hub will ring with Aqara. You wouldn't be able to chat through the display, but that might be the right one for you. I wonder also if there's some work you could do on notification or even placement/angles? Honestly, the 2nd gen battery has been near perfect for me so I think it's about the detection being setup right here. Maybe something just specific is getting you.
@brucevenne9272 Жыл бұрын
This is a great comment @Adam Jakowenko and I echo similar sentiments. I currently have the 1st gen Nest wired doorbell camera (purchased in 2018) but it has since stopped activating my existing mechanical chime for some reason. With assistance from Google Tech Support, we ultimately determined that it is something faulty with the camera itself. Though the unit still seems to function correctly with all other primary functions. Google offered a $50 credit towards the purchase of the 2nd gen Nest wired doorbell camera (which seems generous) but I just can't justify seemingly going backwards in technology based on what I've heard with the comparison to the legacy Nest app versus Google Home. I also have a few older legacy Nest cameras/devices within my home which Google attests will not (yet) completely function with Google Home. So that's definitely a predicament for the time being. I didn't go with Nest Floodlight for the same reason and instead went the Arlo Pro 3 Floodlight. So I guess I might be looking towards the Arlo doorbell camera as a potential successor to my 1st gen Nest doorbell camera.

Are there any good local-only doorbells?
@AutomateYourLife7 ай бұрын
I guess my question is...what's "local-only" mean? - 3 of these can keep footage stored in your home locally. Only Google has to send offsite. Yes even Ring has an option for that. - They all require access to their web services in order to keep your feed secure when you want to look at your doorbell when away from home. - You can review footage off of the local storage in your home if that's where you're storing it. Hope that helps!
@Saturn28887 ай бұрын
@@AutomateYourLife thanks for responding! I'm wanting to know if they can see my camera footage. What if the only online access came from my own server with a domain name I purchased myself? So it's 100% local in that case?

Hi Brian, this is the first video I’ve ever seen of yours but it’s probably the most detailed and well thought out review I’ve seen - amazing work, thank you! Did you ever decide between Aqara and Google? If so, why did you make that choice?
@AutomateYourLife9 ай бұрын
Hey Sam, thank you! I've mostly been using Google. They've expanded what they work with and I just don't care enough to have the recordings from that camera. I use other cameras that are free to get recordings from and I'm happy with my coverage. So I've been using Google for a bit here. :)

Amazing video!! If my ecosystem is mainly google but use Apple TV and have iPhone, what would work best? Starling hub solve all issues? We have wyze cameras, google minis and hubs, GE smart lights, Apple TV, and thinking of going with ecobee premiun thermostat. How could I tie all these systems together? Should I just stick with a nest thermostat and upgrade to nest doorbell? Or go for the ecobee thermostat and aquero doorbell? *okay dropping wyze
@AutomateYourLife Жыл бұрын
The only reason for you to get the Starling hub would be if you wanted the nest video doorbell on your Apple TV. Otherwise it's not going to help you. I think if you're happy with Nest then stay there but the Aqara I would give you the chance to switch between systems later. With the Hubs you have though, it's really nice to be able to see who's at the door and be able to respond on those hubs which you can only do with the nest doorbell

It actually can't. It's just a doorbell ring. That was a funny omission, but do keep in mind that you could make it happen with an Aqara Smart Plug being turned on/off :)

I live in the country and I took Starlink to feed all my electronic needs. My Ring Video Doorbell 2 (Bought at Costco in 2018 for 239.99$ plus taxes), works better with Starlink, however, Ring does have a latency between the time someone passes in front of the camera and the time it notifies me and the sound is still very crappy and cuts up a lot! Now, Ring wants 49.99$ in US funds plus taxes per camera per year!! So needless to say that I will not install my other Ring that is a wired one called Ring Video Doorbell Pro! On different posts Ring owners are recommending Eufy, can you tell me if it is better than my versions of Ring?
@AutomateYourLife8 ай бұрын
In your specific situation, Eufy will work better to see the feed when you're at home. That's based on how they use a Homebase to transfer all the feeds within your home's WiFi. However, when you leave home...Starlink will likely still introduce some lag time in exactly the same way. Try it out and see how much it improves your situation, but Ring's pretty good when it comes to lag time. I get my feeds up in no time at all from Ring doorbells because my internet can handle it (speed AND lag time wise).

Hey Brian, do you have any idea when Google is planning to release their wired doorbell in the EU? And why it is taking them so long?
@AutomateYourLife Жыл бұрын
Hey Marcel, sadly Google has been totally silent on launches with me for about a year now. It's been painful to try to stay on top of what they're doing, as they're not helping at all. Don't know why they decided that was the right thing to do, but it means I can't tell you what's going on there for sure. My sense is they'll just not release it for years, if ever. They don't prioritize hardware for Nest and they don't prioritize it in the EU (even more so). However, I'm sure they knew the market growth potential in the EU for doorbells though, so maybe there is a plan. They're just not sharing it.

Nest (old model) has been nothing but trouble for me - goes offline all the time and has to be reset at the switch (in my basement) - so if we're away on holiday it invariably stops working and can't be reset remotely - thinking Aqara now but not sure it fits

Have you looked at the Eufy doorbell? I just switched to the Wyze doorbell since i want wanting to have 1 "video security" system, but do not like it as well as the Amazon Doorbell Pro (which is much thinner than the one in your video. My key thing is integrating with my Google Home system (Including the Nest Hub). Amzn will not work with the hub at all. Wyze will only work if i give it a voice command. Eufy has a hub that all of it's cameras connect to and store the videos, thus there is no monthly fee. i am not positive about how well Eufy will integrate with the Google Home system.

Don't know why you didn't include Arlo as I picked it based on other reviews. (Perhaps it cannot trigger other automations.) My disappointment with my wired Arlo is that it stopped working while I was away and there was no way to reset it remotely. I had the same problem with kasa smart plugs. These devices need to be reliable enough to not go off line thereby killing remote access or at least be resettable remotely.
@AutomateYourLife Жыл бұрын
I'd agree with that! Also might always make sense to have the ability to reset your wifi. It can be that too. 😀

@@AutomateYourLife I have my router on a timer that cuts the power every night for 10 minutes then switches back on. All devices in the network then must reconnect. Although the router shows some of the kasa smart plugs connected to wifi, the kasa app doesn't. When I get back to the vacation home I will try power cycling the Arlo door bell (it is hard wired) to see if adding a smart plug might be a solution.

After having nest for years, I’d never buy nest again. Besides they’re always “offline” when I try to view them, they’re essentially useless without a subscription. Not that ring is much better, but at least they’re substantially more versatile, especially if you use their alarm monitoring. The king however will always be a subscription free doorbell

We’ve had a ring 2 for 5 years or so and same it never records when needed. It is battery powered but also attached to the solar panel Ring offers. I really think the way to go is wired if you can. That way you don’t have to set the motion to save battery. Oh yeah and the audio is atrocious. Ours randomly just glitches out and sounds like a saw. I wish manufacturers would publish the audio codec and specs.

Your network will drive a lot of the speed behind these, and then there is some speed related to cloud connections/services. The Ring and Google bells can be fast enough with good enough internet.
