I can't resist associating the moral of your Napoleon anecdote with the Kaizen concept of continual improvement. Marcus Aurelius' Stoic trope "memento mori" is another. Problem is, we don't follow good advice nor practice what we preach on a consistent basis. Unless you're on the autistic spectrum of genius (eg Gates, Musk, Bezos, Zuck) the rest of us improve, if at all in cycles or waves.
