Has specialized for years before. During the pandemic went to 2021 YT Jeffsy. After barely two years i decided to part ways. Sold it, and instead bought 2029 stumpy SWorks, little rough of a shape, but even then, it outshined the YT w out a doubt. What a machine. No regrets. Amazing bike. Great video, everything he did about this bike is true. Recommend to anyone shopping for MTB.

Thanks for doing this review. I have a 2019 Comp Carbon XL 29 with a 2020 seat stay crash replacement, and running an MRP Ramp control on the fork instead of volume spacers, took out the big yellow spacer that came with the shock, and I’m running the bike with the flip chip in the high position now. The bike is a beast! It’s nice to see you ride all different terrain and situations with the Rhythm 34 & Float DPS. You are proving that the comp level suspension is very capable, and that the Stumpjumper is a very capable MTB even though it’s not the lowest, slackest, or longest mountain bike in the All Mountain Trail Bike category

@@GoodTrails I think I did starting in late February, but I couldn't get tested. At that time my entire young family got sick. Then I got this staph infection on my nose after touching my nose after handling take out delivery. 2 rounds of Antibiotics didn't fix it so doctors suspected it was a viral infection and then the last round of antibiotics gave me C.dificille. So I'm on a 3rd round of antibiotics which made my arms and legs swell with fluid and I had to go to emergency at the hospital. I got kidney damage from the antibiotics so I'm trying to recover from that right now with tomorrow being my last day of the hard core antibiotics. So I've been binging MTB vids, and booked my reservation slot at my local MTB track for Friday....counting down the days lol. Ironically the only thing that makes me feel a lot better is taking my 4 and 2 year old sons on long semi technical single track trails while run/walk/pushing behind them for over an hour. Kids love it and I get to sweat the fluid build up in my legs/arms. Biking > antibiotics!

I bought a Stumpy back in 2014. It's one of the best "jack of all trades" bikes I've owned. It's been great all around Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario, and I even took it to Whistler as well. Once I dialed in the suspension after crashing the first run (waaay overshot a jump and landed flat which bottomed out suspension and threw me off the bike like a pogo stick lol) I smashed A-line/B line/Dirt merchant and lots of other trails all day long with it. After 2-3 runs and getting more confident I was passing people with DH bikes on the runs. Never felt like I needed more bike to do it. Even the Avid brakes that get shit on, never failed to stop me from what I assume is 50-60km/h burns down the gravel connecting road to trails.

Glad you took it to NH - I got the ST and KIIIIIIND of wish that I'd shelled out for the long travel (not un-changeable -- thinking about upgrading my fork and upping the travel a tad). But I love it either way. Unlike other bikes, the geometry really makes it seem like you're sitting "IN" the bike, making it feel super solid when going fast -- even on techy stuff. Even as a shorter dude --- I'm very happy I got the 29er for New England's chunky descents, those big wheels just float over rocks. I'm just a short drive from Highland and am very tempted to bring it up ....despite the fact that some seem to think you can't take 130mm of travel to the bike park. I also totally agree on sticking with this steed for quite a few years --- could see myself adding another bike to the stable and continuing to upgrade this one instead of trading it in. I ramble. Great review!
@GoodTrails
@GoodTrails 4 жыл бұрын
My favourite thing about the bike is that feeling you mentioned of being "In" the bike. After riding the Stumpy, I realized how awkward I felt on all my other bikes. The only other bike I felt similar on was a Norco Aurum but that is a DH

I enjoyed watching your review and am incredibly impressed with the way that you ride the SJ in bike parks. I ride a 2018 Stumpjumper Expert 29er. Only upgrades have been a pair of Roval Traverse SL wheels (warranty deal) and a OneUp 210mm dropper post because I'm 6'4". Last year I took the bike to Whistler Bike Park twice. The first time in Whistler I rented a Yeti SB150 which rode nice but on the final day in the park I rode my Stumpy out of curiosity. I actually felt far more comfortable on the SJ and was able to hit jumps harder than the SB150. It just felt lighter and far more responsive. I dont ride nearly as well as you do but it's rad to see someone really sending it on this bike. Think I'll hold onto mine just a little bit longer and maybe just apply some suspension upgrades or overhaul the drive train a bit because it's wearing out. Also, the SWOT box is awesome. Some people can poke fun all they want but I love not having to wear anything on my back. My tube, pump, and tools fit inside the bike and I can accommodate a pretty large water bottle. Bottom line is I've been absolutely stoked about this bike from the day that I purchased it. Would recommend it to anyone who wants a one-bike-fits-all for every type of riding. From 8-hour epic adventure pedals to days in the park this bike can handle it all.

Do you have any recommendations on brake pads for more aggressive riding + occasional dh park rides? My stumpy's brakes were not happy with me and started squealing at the dh park. Great videos though man, makes me more confident in the stumpy seeing you hit some crazy stuff.

I've just rode a pretty much stock set-up since I've had the bike. If you have Shimano brakes, you can get ice tech rotors and finned brake pads. But I dont know what you can do for Srams. I would say the sram guide r brakes are the weakest link on my bike

And I want to asked you a question I’m looking for my first full suspension bike with specialized but I can’t decide what model of stupmjumper to buy. Alloy , comp alloy or comp carbon. I’m a guy who is currently increasing skill to do bigger jumps on trails but obviously not jumps over 20ft long at least not in short term so can you give me some advise on the models so I have a better idea I see you bought the stumpy comp and based on your review is pretty good . I’m only finding 29s in aluminum. A shop that’s 200 k away has a 2018 stump carbon pro with 27.5s. It’s in the box and they would swap out the SRAM brakes for XTs; not sure if that really matters. Closer in Tucson they have 5 2020 carbon comps 27.5 with the 12 speed set up in the warehouse(two weeks out). Price is about the same(2018 being a few hundred less). Ive been off bikes for five years from a spinal injury, can’t do motocross, but pretty sure I can mt bike. What’s your opinion? That pro has some great parts on it and I don’t think the technology is that much different. Great video, my bud lives in BC, he just drinks crown and Diet Coke, not into our scene..ha

I heard that bikes are pretty hard to get right now! I would recommend the carbon if you could afford it tho! I'm not sure what to make sure of a spinal injury tho! If you think you can ride, go and rent a bike so you don't waste your money if it turns out that you can't ride.

I put my flip chip in high the 2md day I got it and its not been in low since. Seems to be the thing to do. Good to know it can do Whistler lol. I think it's a great bike, the DPS shock at the rear can be a bit lacking sometimes but the OE 34's up front are great. Good review, honestly the best I've seen so far. This question doesn't have a lot to do with the Stumpy itself, but I'm wondering how the suspension is holding up. I assume you're not that heavy, but under my weight (>100kg/220lbs) I'd be concerned about the stiffness of a 34 and the heat-capability of the DPS. You ride way harder than I do and send way bigger jumps, and I was constantly overheating my old Monarch and I even wish my Lyrik was even stiffer than it is. Can you say something about that? Ever noticed the shock losing damping force on those longer descents or the fork flexing too much in technical terrain?
@GoodTrails
@GoodTrails 4 жыл бұрын
Nah its not bad. The 34 with the grip 2 is ridiculously good. I can't say the DPS is amazing but it's pretty good. I gets a little slow on long descents but it's not a huge issue. I would like to try a coil one day to compare
@AdrianSchwizgebel
@AdrianSchwizgebel 4 жыл бұрын
@@GoodTrails Nice to hear, thanks for your reply! My girlfriend actually runs the exact same shock/fork on her 150mm bike, but she's light and doesn't push the bike that hard yet. I was very impressed by the Grip damper in the Rythm fork, I probably couldn't tell the difference to a Factory Grip2 in a blind test. I've replaced my old Monarch with a Cane Creek DBair CS which was a day and night difference, absolutely mindblowing. Now I'm waiting for my Inline Coil to arrive, so stoked to try it out, first coil for me. Shouldn't a damper get faster (more heat, thinner oil -> faster?) when it gets hot?

Nice review. I have the same model in iridescent blue. I’ve done some upgrades to mine though. I’d highly recommend Magura MT7’s and Fox 36 factory if you want to beef it up a bit. I’m still running the DPS rear shock but that’ll be the next thing to upgrade. I wouldn’t mind some stronger wheels too because I’m 105kg (~230lb) and I’ve broken 3 spokes so far on the rear wheel from sending drops and jumps. Also I think I heard you say 150mm travel front and rear. Correct me if I’m wrong but the 2019/2020 Stumpjumper is 150 front 140 rear.

@@GoodTrails Fair enough. The Fox 34 Rhythm is pretty plush, it was just way too flexible for my body weight. I noticed a huge difference going up to the 36 Factory especially on long gnarly descents. I’ve also upgrade the handlebar to a Renthal Fatbar Carbon, Ergon GA3 grips, Specialized power saddle and downhill casing tyres. I’d like to get the Fox X2 but for now that’ll have to wait. $$
